Test for homogeneity with unordered paired observations

In some applications, an experimental unit is composed of two distinct but related subunits. The response from such a unit is $(X_{1}, X_{2})$ but we observe only $Y_1 = \min\{X_{1},X_{2}\}$ and $Y_2 = \max\{X_{1},X_{2}\}$, i.e., the subunit identities are not observed. We call $(Y_1, Y_2)$ unordered paired observations. Based on unordered paired observations $\{(Y_{1i}, Y_{2i})\}_{i=1}^n$, we are interested in whether the marginal distributions for $X_1$ and $X_2$ are identical. Testing methods are available in the literature under the assumptions that $Var(X_1) = Var(X_2)$ and $Cov(X_1, X_2) = 0$. However, by extensive simulation studies, we observe that when one or both assumptions are violated, these methods have inflated type I errors or much lower powers. In this paper, we study the likelihood ratio test statistics for various scenarios and explore their limiting distributions without these restrictive assumptions. Furthermore, we develop Bartlett correction formulae for these statistics to enhance their precision when the sample size is not large. Simulation studies and real-data examples are used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed methods.

Accelerated Computation of Free Energy Profile at ab Initio Quantum Mechanical/Molecular Mechanics Accuracy via a Semi-Empirical Reference Potential. I. Weighted Thermodynamics Perturbation

Free energy profile (FE Profile) is an essential quantity for the estimation of reaction rate and the validation of reaction mechanism. For chemical reactions in condensed phase or enzymatic reactions, the computation of FE profile at ab initio (ai) quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) level is still far too expensive. Semiempirical (SE) method can be hundreds or thousands of times faster than the ai methods. However, the accuracy of SE methods is often unsatisfactory, due to the approximations that have been adopted in these methods. In this work, we proposed a new method termed MBAR+wTP, in which the ai QM/MM free energy profile is computed by a weighted thermodynamic perturbation (TP) correction to the SE profile generated by the multistate Bennett acceptance ratio (MBAR) analysis of the trajectories from umbrella samplings (US). The weight factors used in the TP calculations are a byproduct of the MBAR analysis in the post-processing of the US trajectories, which are often discarded after the free energy calculations. The results show that this approach can enhance the efficiency of ai FE profile calculations by several orders of magnitude.

Centralized adaptive traffic control strategy design across multiple intersections based on vehicle path flows: An approximated Lagrangian decomposition approach

In this paper, we first present a centralized traffic control model based on the emerging dynamic path flows. This new model in essence views the whole target network as one integral piece in which traffic propagates based on traffic flow dynamics, vehicle paths, and traffic control. In light of this centralized traffic control concept, most requirements for the existing traffic control coordination will be dropped in the optimal traffic control operations, such as the common cycle length or offsets. Instead, the optimal traffic control strategy across intersections will be highly adaptive over time to minimize the total travel time and it can also prevent any short-term traffic congestions according to the space-time characteristics of vehicle path flows. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is then presented to model the propagations of path flows given a centralized traffic control strategy. Secondly, a new approximated Lagrangian decomposition framework is presented. Solving the proposed MILP model with the traditional Lagrangian decomposition approach faces the leveraging challenge between the problem tractability after decomposition and computing complexity. To address this issue, we propose an approximate Lagrangian decomposition framework in which the target problem is reformulated into an approximated problem by constructing its complicating attributes into the objective function instead of in constraints to reduce the computing complexity. The computing efficiency loss of the objective function can be mitigated via multiple advanced computing techniques. With the proposed approximated approach, the upper bound and tight lower bound can be obtained via two customized dynamic network loading models. In the end, one demonstrative and one real-world example are illustrated to show the validness, robustness, and scalability of the new approach.

A constant characteristic volume density of dark matter haloes from SPARC rotation curve fits

We study the scaling relations between dark matter (DM) haloes and galaxy discs using 175 galaxies from the SPARC database. We explore two cosmologically motivated DM halo profiles: the Einasto profile from DM-only simulations and the DC14 profile from hydrodynamic simulations. We fit the observed rotation curves using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and break the disc-halo degeneracy using near-infrared photometry and $Λ$CDM-motivated priors. We find that the characteristic volume density $ρ_{\rm s}$ of DM haloes is nearly constant over $\sim$5 decades in galaxy luminosity. The scale radius $r_s$ and the characteristic surface density $ρ_s\cdot r_s$, instead, correlate with galaxy luminosity. These scaling relations provide an empirical benchmark to cosmological simulations of galaxy formation.

Homogeneity testing under finite location-scale mixtures

The testing problem for the order of finite mixture models has a long history and remains an active research topic. Since Ghosh and Sen (1985) revealed the hard-to-manage asymptotic properties of the likelihood ratio test, there has been marked progress. The most successful attempts include the modified likelihood ratio test and the EM-test, which lead to neat solutions for finite mixtures of univariate normal distributions, finite mixtures of single-parameter distributions, and several mixture-like models. The problem remains challenging, and there is still no generic solution for location-scale mixtures. In this paper, we provide an EM-test solution for homogeneity for finite mixtures of location-scale family distributions. This EM-test has nonstandard limiting distributions, but we are able to find the critical values numerically. We use computer experiments to obtain appropriate values for the tuning parameters. A simulation study shows that the fine-tuned EM-test has close to nominal type I errors and very good power properties. Two application examples are included to demonstrate the performance of the EM-test.

Fitting the radial acceleration relation to individual SPARC galaxies

Galaxies follow a tight radial acceleration relation (RAR): the acceleration observed at every radius correlates with that expected from the distribution of baryons. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to fit the mean RAR to 175 individual galaxies in the SPARC database, marginalizing over stellar mass-to-light ratio ($Υ_{\star}$), galaxy distance, and disk inclination. Acceptable fits with astrophysically reasonable parameters are found for the vast majority of galaxies. The residuals around these fits have an rms scatter of only 0.057 dex ($\sim$13$\%$). This is in agreement with the predictions of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). We further consider a generalized version of the RAR that, unlike MOND, permits galaxy-to-galaxy variation in the critical acceleration scale. The fits are not improved with this additional freedom: there is no credible indication of variation in the critical acceleration scale. The data are consistent with the action of a single effective force law. The apparent universality of the acceleration scale and the small residual scatter are key to understanding galaxies.

Doubly Robust Inference with Non-probability Survey Samples

We establish a general framework for statistical inferences with non-probability survey samples when relevant auxiliary information is available from a probability survey sample. We develop a rigorous procedure for estimating the propensity scores for units in the non-probability sample, and construct doubly robust estimators for the finite population mean. Variance estimation is discussed under the proposed framework. Results from simulation studies show the robustness and the efficiency of our proposed estimators as compared to existing methods. The proposed method is used to analyze a non-probability survey sample collected by the Pew Research Center with auxiliary information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Current Population Survey. Our results illustrate a general approach to inference with non-probability samples and highlight the importance and usefulness of auxiliary information from probability survey samples.

Optical solitons in media with focusing and defocusing saturable nonlinearity and a parity-time-symmetric external potential

We report results for solitons in models of waveguides with focusing or defocusing saturable nonlinearity and a parity-time(PT )-symmetric complex-valued external potential of the Scarf-II type. The model applies to the nonlinear wave propagation in graded-index optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We find both fundamental and multipole solitons for both focusing and defocusing signs of the saturable nonlinearity in such PT -symmetric waveguides. The dependence of the propagation constant on the soliton's power is presented for different strengths of the nonlinearity saturation, S. The stability of fundamental, dipole, tripole, and quadrupole solitons is investigated by means of the linear-stability analysis and direct numerical simulations of the corresponding (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation. The results show that the instability of the stationary solutions can be mitigated or completely suppressed, increasing the value of S.

Optical Solitons in PT-symmetric Potentials with Competing Cubic-Quintic Nonlinearity: Existence, Stability, and Dynamics

We address the properties of optical solitons that form in media with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and parity-time(PT)-symmetric complex-valued external potentials. The model describes the propagation of solitons in nonlinear optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We study the existence, stability, and robustness of fundamental, dipole, and multipole stationary solutions in this PT-symmetric system. The corresponding eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental, dipole, tripole, and quadrupole solitons are presented. We show that the eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental and dipole solitons merge at a coalescence point Wc1, whereas the corresponding diagrams for tripole and quadrupole solitons merge at a larger coalescence point Wc2. Beyond these two merging points, i.e., when the gain-loss strength parameter W0 exceeds the corresponding coalescence points, the eigenvalue spectra cease to exist. The stability of the stationary solutions is investigated by performing the linear stability analysis and the robustness to propagation of these stationary solutions is checked by using direct numerical simulations.

Asymptotic coverage probabilities of bootstrap percentile confidence intervals for constrained parameters

The asymptotic behaviour of the commonly used bootstrap percentile confidence interval is investigated when the parameters are subject to linear inequality constraints. We concentrate on the important one- and two-sample problems with data generated from general parametric distributions in the natural exponential family. The focus of this paper is on quantifying the coverage probabilities of the parametric bootstrap percentile confidence intervals, in particular their limiting behaviour near boundaries. We propose a local asymptotic framework to study this subtle coverage behaviour. Under this framework, we discover that when the true parameters are on, or close to, the restriction boundary, the asymptotic coverage probabilities can always exceed the nominal level in the one-sample case; however, they can be, remarkably, both under and over the nominal level in the two-sample case. Using illustrative examples, we show that the results provide theoretical justification and guidance on applying the bootstrap percentile method to constrained inference problems.

Asymmetric optical amplifier based on parity-time symmetry

We design and optimize a waveguide structure consisted of three segments of PT-symmetric coupler. It can amplify the difference mode with the attenuation of the sum mode, so performs an asymmetric optical amplifier. Also, the dependence of the amplification factor for the difference mode and the attenuation factor for the sum mode on the gain/loss is illustrated.

Static critical fluctuations on the freeze-out surface

In this proceeding, we summarize the main results of our recent paper, which introduces a freeze-out scheme to the dynamical models near the QCD critical point. Within such framework of static critical fluctuations, the Beam Energy Scan (BES) data of $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ for net protons within different $p_T$ ranges can be roughly described. Besides, the momentum acceptance dependence of higher cumulants at lower collision energies can also be qualitatively described. However, $C_2$ and $C_3$ are always over-predicted due to the positive static critical fluctuations.

Multiplicity fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface

This proceeding briefly summarizes our recent work on calculating the correlated fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface near the QCD critical point. For both Poisson and Binomial baselines, our calculations could roughly reproduce the energy dependent cumulant $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ of net protons, but always over-predict $C_2$ and $C_3$ due to the positive contributions from the static critical fluctuations.

Correlated fluctuations near the QCD critical point

In this paper, we introduce a freeze-out scheme for the dynamical models near the QCD critical point through coupling the decoupled classical particles with the order parameter field. With a modified distribution function that satisfies specific static fluctuations, we calculate the correlated fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface. A comparison with recent STAR data shows that our model calculations could roughly reproduce energy dependent cumulant $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ of net protons through tuning the related parameters. However, the calculated $C_2$ and $C_3$ with both Poisson and Binomial baselines are always above the experimental data due to the positive contributions from the static critical fluctuations. In order to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the experimental data, the dynamical critical fluctuations and more realistic non-critical fluctuation baselines should be investigated in the near future.

Role of anthropogenic direct heat emissions in global warming

The anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are widely realized as the predominant drivers of global warming, but the huge and increasing anthropogenic direct heat emissions (AHE) has not gained enough attention in terms of its role in the warming of the climate system. Based on two reasonable assumptions of (1) AHE eventually transfers to the Earth energy system and (2) the net warming is only driven by the net radioactive forcing (RF) from either GHG or other causes, we analyzed the role of AHE in global warming. The mean annual total AHE of the four main sources including energy consumption, residual heat of electricity generation, biomass decomposition by land use and cover change (LUCC) and food consumption was estimated to be 4.41*10^20 J in 1970-2010, accounting for 6.23% of the net annual heat increase of the Earth reported by IPCC AR5 for the period. The mean annual radioactive forcing (RF) by AHE was up to 29.94 mW m^(-2) globally in 1981-2010, less than the annual net increase of total GHG (34.80 mW m^(-2)) but more that of CO2 (24.43 mW m^(-2). The results suggested that AHE played a great role in global warming, urging us to pay more attention to DHE for a better evaluation of RF and more reasonable energy policy including non-GHG energy in the future (Keywords: climate change, anthropogenic direct heat emission, energy, radioactive forcing, heat balance, global warming).

The origin of hyperferroelectricity in Li$B$O$_3$ ($B$=V, Nb, Ta, Os)

The electronic and structural properties of Li$B$O$_3$ ($B$=V, Nb, Ta, Os) are investigated via first-principles methods. We show that Li$B$O$_3$ belong to the recently proposed hyperferroelectrics, i.e., they all have unstable longitudinal optic phonon modes. Especially, the ferroelectric-like instability in the metal LiOsO$_3$, whose optical dielectric constant goes to infinity, is a limiting case of hyperferroelectrics. Via an effective Hamiltonian, we further show that, in contrast to normal proper ferroelectricity, in which the ferroelectric instability usually comes from long-range coulomb interactions, the hyperferroelectric instability is due to the structure instability driven by short-range interactions. This could happen in systems with large ion size mismatches, which therefore provides a useful guidance in searching for novel hyperferroelectrics.

Is hadronic flow produced in p--Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider?

Using the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics ({\tt UrQMD}) model, we investigate the azimuthal correlations in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. It is shown that the simulated hadronic p--Pb system can not generate the collective flow signatures, but mainly behaves as a non-flow dominant system. However, the characteristic $v_{2}(p_{\rm T})$ mass-ordering of pions, kaons and protons is observed in {\tt UrQMD} simulations, which is the consequence of hadronic interactions and not necessarily associated with strong fluid-like expansions.

Black Phosphorus-Polymer Composites for Pulsed Lasers

Black phosphorus is a very promising material for telecommunication due to its direct bandgap and strong resonant absorption in near-infrared wavelength range. However, ultrafast nonlinear photonic applications relying on the ultrafast photo-carrier dynamics as well as optical nonlinearity in black phosphorus remain unexplored. In this work, we investigate nonlinear optical properties of solution exfoliated BP and demonstrate the usage of BP as a new saturable absorber for high energy pulse generation in fiber laser. In order to avoid the oxidization and degradation of BP, we encapsulated BP by polymer matrix which is optically transparent in the spectrum range of interest to form a composite. Two fabrication approaches were demonstrated to produce BP-polymer composite films which were further incorporated into fiber laser cavity as nonlinear media. BP shows very fast carrier dynamics and BP-polymer composite has a modulation depth of 10.6%. A highly stable Q-switched pulse generation was achieved and the single pulse energy of ~194 nJ was demonstrated. The ease of handling of such black phosphorus-polymer composite thin films affords new opportunities for wider applications such as optical sensing, signal processing and light modulation.
