Enhancement of alpha-decay by positive hexadecapole deformation

Whether hexadecapole deformation ($\beta_4$) influences $\alpha$ decay remains controversial: machine-learning analyses suggest a strong link to cluster preformation, while empirical formulas find only marginal effects. We show that this discrepancy originates in the treatment of shell effects---without an explicit shell correction, residuals near magic numbers are absorbed into the deformation coefficients, obscuring the genuine $\beta_4$ dependence. Adding the inverse Casten factor $C_{pn}$, which encodes valence proton--neutron correlations relative to the nearest closed shells, and the parent-nucleus deformation $\beta_4^{(p)}$ to the Royer formula reduces the root-mean-square deviation from 0.309 to 0.184 for 192 even--even nuclei. The fitted negative $\beta_4^{(p)}$ coefficient shows that positive hexadecapole deformation systematically shortens half-lives, consistent with enhanced $\alpha$-cluster preformation at locally convex surface regions. For the $Z=94$ isotopic chain (Pu), where pronounced $\beta_4^{(p)}>0$ occurs, the original Royer formula overestimates half-lives by up to $\sim\!0.5$~dex, providing a clear, testable signature of this surface-preformation effect. The same correction also improves the UDL and yields predictions for 1060 even--even nuclei.

Extracting nuclear charge radii from binding energies: a single-parameter empirical formula with structural corrections

Nuclear binding energies and charge radii stem from the same underlying physics: saturation, isospin dependence, shell structure, and deformation. Binding-energy data therefore provide a natural constraint for charge-radius modeling. We propose a one-parameter charge-radius formula ($\mathrm{BECR}_\mathrm{1p}$) that combines binding-energy correlations with local structural corrections. On a curated set of 893 experimental charge radii, the macroscopic BECR term alone reproduces the leading charge-radius scale with a root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of 0.0345 fm; adding shell, odd--even, finite-size, and deformation corrections further reduces the RMSD of BECR1p to 0.0138 fm. An anisotropic kernel ridge regression (AKRR) applied to the residuals further lowers the leave-one-out cross-validation RMSD to about 0.0081 fm. We use the formula to predict charge radii for 11205 nuclei across the nuclear chart.

Analytical penetration probability including the centrifugal potential: An improved Buck--Merchant--Perez model for alpha-decay half-lives

We derive a closed-form, non-perturbative WKB penetration formula for alpha-decay that explicitly incorporates the centrifugal potential within the Buck--Merchant--Perez (BMP) cluster model. The centrifugal term is shown to enhance the hindrance by effectively enlarging the barrier width: it pushes the outer turning point outward and, via the Bohr--Sommerfeld quantization condition, shifts the inner turning point inward. Building on this analytical result, we further develop an improved BMP model in which the nuclear potential depth is expressed as a unified four-parameter formula that simultaneously encodes shell corrections, odd-even pairing effects, and orbital-angular-momentum dependence. For 534 ground-state-to-ground-state alpha decays spanning Z = 60--118, the root-mean-square deviation of log base 10 T1/2 is reduced to 0.267, representing a 57% improvement over the original constant-depth BMP model (0.615), with robust performance for both favored (0.188) and unfavored (0.398) transitions. The framework is further applied to predict the half-lives of hitherto-unmeasured nuclei in the region Z = 117--120, providing quantitative benchmarks for future experimental investigations.

Two-Step Tapering-Collapse Method Enables Element-Interdiffused Cladding for Enhanced Laser Amplification in Yb:YAG Single Crystal Fibers

The development of high-power single crystal fiber (SCF) lasers is critically hindered by the lack of a reliable cladding scheme to confine the optical mode and ensure beam quality. Here, we propose and demonstrate a two-step tapering-collapse method for the first time to fabricate a high-quality cladding on Yb:YAG SCFs based on elemental interdiffusion. This in-situ formed crystalline transition layer with a graded refractive index effectively suppresses lattice mismatch and abruptly mitigates core-cladding interfacial stress. Consequently, the numerical aperture of the SCF is significantly reduced from 0.280 to 0.199. In a master oscillator power amplifier configuration, the clad SCF delivers a remarkable 46.7% enhancement in slope efficiency compared to its bare counterpart, accompanied by a substantially improved near-field beam profile. This work establishes a facile and effective route to high-performance clad SCFs, unlocking their full potential for next-generation extreme-condition lasers.

Unified Royer law revision for alpha-decay half-lives: shell corrections, pairing, and orbital-angular-momentum

The Royer law is a widely used empirical relation for calculating alpha-decay half-lives; however, it requires 12 parity-dependent parameters. It exhibits systematic deviations near the shell closure. We propose an improved Royer law by adding a shell-correction term, an odd-even pairing indicator, and an orbital-angular-momentum contribution. This unified framework reduces the number of free parameters to just four, leading to significant improvements in accuracy. The root-mean-square deviation across 550 experimental data points decreases from 0.520 to 0.279, corresponding to a 66.7% reduction in parameters and 46.3% improvement in accuracy. Using this refined formalism, we predict alpha-decay half-lives for superheavy nuclei with atomic numbers.

Boundary-Aware Test-Time Adaptation for Zero-Shot Medical Image Segmentation

Due to the scarcity of annotated data and the substantial computational costs of model, conventional tuning methods in medical image segmentation face critical challenges. Current approaches to adapting pretrained models, including full-parameter and parameter-efficient fine-tuning, still rely heavily on task-specific training on downstream tasks. Therefore, zero-shot segmentation has gained increasing attention, especially with foundation models such as SAM demonstrating promising generalization capabilities. However, SAM still faces notable limitations on medical datasets due to domain shifts, making efficient zero-shot enhancement an urgent research goal. To address these challenges, we propose BA-TTA-SAM, a task-agnostic test-time adaptation framework that significantly enhances the zero-shot segmentation performance of SAM via test-time adaptation. This framework integrates two key mechanisms: (1) The encoder-level Gaussian prompt injection embeds Gaussian-based prompts directly into the image encoder, providing explicit guidance for initial representation learning. (2) The cross-layer boundary-aware attention alignment exploits the hierarchical feature interactions within the ViT backbone, aligning deep semantic responses with shallow boundary cues. Experiments on four datasets, including ISIC, Kvasir, BUSI, and REFUGE, show an average improvement of 12.4\% in the DICE score compared with SAM's zero-shot segmentation performance. The results demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models in medical image segmentation. Our framework significantly enhances the generalization ability of SAM, without requiring any source-domain training data. Extensive experiments on publicly available medical datasets strongly demonstrate the superiority of our framework. Our code is available at https://github.com/Emilychenlin/BA-TTA-SAM.

AFSI: Automated Fluid-Structure Interaction Solver Development for Nonlinear Solid Mechanics

AFSI is a novel, open-source fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver that extends the capabilities of the FEniCS finite element library through an immersed boundary (IB) framework. Designed to simulate large deformations in hyperelastic materials (such as cardiac tissue), AFSI avoids the need for expensive remeshing by coupling a Lagrangian representation of the solid with an Eulerian description of the surrounding fluid. This approach retains the full expressiveness of FEniCS's variational formulations, function spaces, and time integration schemes. Implemented in a hybrid Python/C++ architecture, AFSI allows users to define geometries, constitutive models (e.g., the Holzapfel-Ogden law for myocardium), and strain energy functions directly in Python, while delegating performance-critical tasks such as assembly and linear solvers to optimized C++ backends. Its concise and modular Python API facilitates the setup of FSI simulations, enabling users to easily modify discretization strategies or analyze results using standard FEniCS post-processing tools. By combining the flexibility of FEniCS with a robust immersed boundary formulation, AFSI empowers rapid prototyping of complex nonlinear solid-fluid interaction problems, making it a powerful tool for simulating biomechanical systems and other applications involving highly deformable structures in flow.

High-brightness multimode fiber laser amplifier

Fiber lasers are widely used in various fields owing to their high efficiency, flexible transmission and excellent beam quality. In applications such as industrial manufacturing and defense systems, a higher output power is always desired. Nevertheless, the power scaling in fiber lasers is limited by nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability in conventional high-power fiber laser systems, where the laser is amplified within the fundamental fiber mode. A promising strategy to overcome these limitations is to utilize multimode fibers, which exhibit higher thresholds for both nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability, combined with wavefront shaping techniques to convert the output speckle pattern into a single concentrated spot. In this study, a high-power multimode fiber laser amplifier based on wavefront shaping is constructed and investigated, achieving a focused beam profile with a 168 W output power. The effects of objective function and the linewidth of seed laser on the system performance are also studied. Additionally, an all-fiber version of high-brightness multimode fiber laser amplifier is proposed. This work opens up new avenues for leveraging multimode fibers to achieve higher brightness in fiber lasers and may inspire other research based on wavefront shaping.

Fully GPU-Accelerated, Matrix-Free Immersed Boundary Method for Complex Fiber-reinforced Hyperelastic Cardiac Models

The immersed boundary (IB) method has become a leading approach in cardiac fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling due to its ability to handle large deformations and complex geometries without requiring mesh regeneration. However, the use of nonlinear, fiber-reinforced hyperelastic materials for modeling soft cardiac tissues introduces challenges in computational efficiency, particularly due to the additional projection steps required for stability in the IB framework. These steps often involve sparse matrix storage and computation, which can degrade GPU performance. In this work, we present a novel, fully GPU-accelerated, matrix-free IB method for FSI in anatomically realistic cardiac models. By employing nodal coupling, our method eliminates the need for projection operations in the finite element space. Additionally, we solve the Navier-Stokes equations using Chorin's projection method combined with a matrix-free geometric multigrid solver, ensuring the entire FSI algorithm remains matrix-free and highly compatible with GPU acceleration. Our implementation features several GPU-specific optimizations, including the use of constant memory to store values of nodal basis functions and their derivatives at quadrature points, and texture memory to efficiently implement the semi-Lagrangian discretization of convection terms. These innovations maximize GPU utilization while preserving the complex mechanical behavior of soft cardiac tissue. Benchmark tests demonstrate that our GPU-accelerated solver achieves a $50\times$-$100\times$ speedup compared to a 20-core CPU implementation, with comparable accuracy.

Deep Forest with Hashing Screening and Window Screening

As a novel deep learning model, gcForest has been widely used in various applications. However, the current multi-grained scanning of gcForest produces many redundant feature vectors, and this increases the time cost of the model. To screen out redundant feature vectors, we introduce a hashing screening mechanism for multi-grained scanning and propose a model called HW-Forest which adopts two strategies, hashing screening and window screening. HW-Forest employs perceptual hashing algorithm to calculate the similarity between feature vectors in hashing screening strategy, which is used to remove the redundant feature vectors produced by multi-grained scanning and can significantly decrease the time cost and memory consumption. Furthermore, we adopt a self-adaptive instance screening strategy to improve the performance of our approach, called window screening, which can achieve higher accuracy without hyperparameter tuning on different datasets. Our experimental results show that HW-Forest has higher accuracy than other models, and the time cost is also reduced.

Design considerations and performance analysis of fiber laser array system for structuring orbital angular momentum beams

Since the advent of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM), advances in the generation and manipulation of OAM beams have continuously impacted on intriguing applications including optical communication, optical tweezers, and remote sensing. To realize the generation of high-power and fast switchable OAM beams, coherent combining of fiber lasers offers a promising way. Here in this contribution, we comprehensively investigate the coherent fiber laser array system for structuring OAM beams in terms of the design considerations and performance analysis. The performance metric and evaluation method of the laser array system are presented and introduced. Accordingly, the effect of the main sections of the laser array system, namely the high-power laser sources, emitting array configuration, and dynamic control system, on the performance of the output coherently combined OAM beams is evaluated, which reveals the system tolerance of perturbative factors and provides the guidance on system design and optimization. This work could provide beneficial reference on the practical implementation of spatially structuring high-power, fast switchable OAM beams with fiber laser arrays.

DBC-Forest: Deep forest with binning confidence screening

As a deep learning model, deep confidence screening forest (gcForestcs) has achieved great success in various applications. Compared with the traditional deep forest approach, gcForestcs effectively reduces the high time cost by passing some instances in the high-confidence region directly to the final stage. However, there is a group of instances with low accuracy in the high-confidence region, which are called mis-partitioned instances. To find these mis-partitioned instances, this paper proposes a deep binning confidence screening forest (DBC-Forest) model, which packs all instances into bins based on their confidences. In this way, more accurate instances can be passed to the final stage, and the performance is improved. Experimental results show that DBC-Forest achieves highly accurate predictions for the same hyperparameters and is faster than other similar models to achieve the same accuracy.

Laser array of coherent beam combination system revisited: angular domain perspective and fractal-based optimization

Coherent beam combination (CBC) of fiber lasers holds promise for achieving high brightness laser systems, which have given rise to widespread applications such as particle accelerator, space debris removal, and industrial fabrication. The emitting laser array of CBC systems offers intriguing features in terms of agile beam steering, flexible beam shaping, and high scalability for output power and array elements. However, the theoretical model of the laser array in CBC systems is less well explored beyond the routine angular-spectrum method, where methods for optimizing the laser array configuration are more limited. Here, we explore the theory for the laser array of CBC systems in the view of angular domain. The laser array is represented by the composition of angular harmonics, the orthogonal basis over the azimuthal plane, and we elucidate the formation of mainlobe and sidelobes of the far-field interference pattern by using the orbital angular momentum spectrum analysis and azimuthal decomposition. Based on our findings, a fractal-based laser array configuration is proposed to enhance the performance of the combining system. Our work offers a deeper insight into the theoretical study and application of laser beam combination and opens opportunities for the further optimization of CBC implementations.

User-Centric Cooperative MEC Service Offloading

Mobile edge computing provides users with a cloud environment close to the edge of the wireless network, supporting the computing intensive applications that have low latency requirements. The combination of offloading with the wireless communication brings new challenges. This paper investigates the service caching problem during the long-term service offloading in the user-centric wireless network. To meet the time-varying service demands of a typical user, a cooperative service caching strategy in the unit of the base station (BS) cluster is proposed. We formulate the caching problem as a time-averaged completion delay minimization problem and transform it into time-decoupled instantaneous problems with a virtual caching cost queue at first. Then we propose a distributed algorithm which is based on the consensus-sharing alternating direction method of multipliers to solve each instantaneous problem. The simulations validate that the proposed online distributed service caching algorithm can achieve the optimal time-averaged completion delay of offloading tasks with the smallest caching cost in the unit of a BS cluster.

QoS-Driven Video Uplinking in NOMA-Based IoT

In recent years, with the explosive growth of visual sensors and a large number of related video applications in Internet of Things (IoT), massive video data is generated by IoT devices. Since the volume of video data is far greater than traditional data in IoT, it is challenging to ensure high Quality of Service (QoS) for video uplinking in IoT. To address this challenge, we integrate non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and scalable video coding (SVC) in IoT. To improve the video quality, we formulate a power allocation problem to maximize the average QoS in the proposed integrated system. Due to that the problem is non-convex, we transform it into a monotonic problem based on its hidden monotonicity. Then a power allocation algorithm based on polyblock outer approximation is proposed to solve the problem effectively. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing OMA and NOMA based schemes for video uplinking in IoT in terms of QoS and energy efficiency.

High-efficiency and high-power single-frequency fiber laser at 1.6 um based on cascaded energy-transfer pumping

In this paper, a technique combing cascaded energy-transfer pumping (CEP) method and master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration is proposed for power scaling of 1.6-um-band single-frequency fiber lasers (SFFLs), where the Er3+ ion has a limited gain. The CEP technique is fulfilled by coupling a primary signal light at 1.6 um and a C-band auxiliary laser. The numerical model of the fiber amplifier with the CEP technique reveals that the energy transfer process involves the pump competition and the in-band particle transition between the signal and auxiliary lights. Moreover, for the signal emission, the population density in the upper level is enhanced and the effective population inversion is achieved due to the CEP. A single-frequency MOPA laser at 1603 nm with an output power of 52.6 W is obtained experimentally. Besides, a slope efficiency of 30.4% is improved by more than 10% through the CEP technique. Both the output power and slope efficiency are by far the highest for 1.6-um-band SFFLs. Meanwhile, a laser linewidth of 5.2 kHz and a polarization-extinction ratio of ~18 dB are obtained at the maximum output power. The proposed technique provides an optional method of increasing the slope efficiency and power scaling for fiber lasers operating at L-band.

Unveiling the temporal dynamics in multi-longitudinal mode ytterbium-doped fiber lasers

In this work, we propose a unified spatio-temporal model to study the temporal dynamics in continuously pumped ytterbium-doped fiber lasers (YDFLs). Different from previously reported theories, this model is capable of obtaining the temporal evolution of an YDFL from relaxation oscillation region to relative stable region in different time scales ranging from sub-nanosecond to millisecond. It reveals that there exists dual time scale characteristics in the temporal evolution of a multi-longitudinal mode YDFL. Specifically, the temporal evolution would experience sharp change during one cavity round-trip while keep relatively stable between adjacent cavity round-trips. Representative cases are simulated to study the influences of structure parameters on the temporal dynamics and the longitudinal mode characteristics in YDFLs. Three types of temporal instabilities, i.e. sustained self-pulsing, self-mode locking, and turbulence-like pulsing, coexist in a multi-longitudinal mode YDFL. The simulation results clarify that the three temporal instabilities are all the reflectors of intrinsic characteristics of longitudinal modes superposition in multi-longitudinal mode YDFLs. In addition, the strength of the irregular sustained self-pulsing is the major issue which impacts the macroscopic temporal fluctuations in YDFLs.

Effects of four-wave-mixing in high-power Raman fiber amplifiers

In this work, we derive and present the coupled amplitude equations to describe the evolutions of different spectral components in different transverse modes for Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs). Both the effects of the four-wave-mixing in the fundamental mode (FM FWM) and the inter-modal four-wave-mixing (IM FWM) on high-power RFAs are demonstrated through numerical simulations. Specifically, effective FM FWM interactions could occur and lead to a drop of the Raman threshold for RFAs by over 50%, despite that the corresponding wave-vector mismatch is rather big. In addition, the IM FWM could also impact the Raman threshold for RFAs with additional generation of the first order Raman Stokes light in the higher-order mode. We also investigate the effects of the intensity fluctuations in the initial inserted pump and seed lasers on high-power RFAs. It reveals that the temporal stability of the initial inserted pump laser have much more significant impacts on high-power RFAs than that of the initial inserted seed laser. Notably, through applying temporal stable laser as the initial inserted pump laser, both the FM FWM and IM FWM effects could be effectively suppressed, and the Raman threshold for high-power RFAs could be increased by over twice.
