Timing and Spectral Analysis of the 2024 Outburst of 2S 1553$-$542 with NuSTAR and NICER

We report a timing and spectral study of the 2024 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar 2S~1553$-$542 using \textit{NuSTAR} and \textit{NICER} observations. From the \textit{NuSTAR} light curve we measure a pulse period of $9.285022\pm0.000001$~s. The energy-resolved pulse profiles are dominated by a single peak and show a wing-like structure most clearly in the $12$--$22$~keV band. The pulsed fraction remains above 60\% and increases with energy. The phase-averaged \textit{NuSTAR} spectrum is described by an absorbed blackbody plus cutoff power-law continuum, together with an iron emission line and a cyclotron absorption feature. Using the \texttt{cyclabs} model, we obtain a cyclotron energy of $E_{\rm cyc}\simeq24.1$~keV, corresponding to a magnetic field strength of $B\sim3\times10^{12}$~G. Phase-resolved spectroscopy shows that the continuum and cyclotron-line parameters vary with pulse phase, and that the line becomes poorly constrained around the pulse-wing phase. We also searched the short \textit{NICER} GTIs for transient mHz variability using wavelet analysis and a CEEMDAN-based Hilbert--Huang transform. Localized excesses near $\sim10$~mHz and $\sim20$~mHz are found, but the short exposures, COI effects, red-noise fluctuations, and the lack of a well-constrained Fourier peak limit their significance. We therefore treat them as candidate mHz variability rather than firm mHz QPO detections.

Different polarized components of the quasar 3C 286 revealed by FAST

3C 286, a well-known radio calibrator, exhibits the stability in both of total flux density (FD) and polarization parameters. However, its stable and luminous interstellar radio signal may encounter interplanetary scintillation (IPS) due to density irregularities in the solar wind within the heliosphere. In this work, we analyze high-time-resolution observations of 3C 286 obtained with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) from 2019 to 2023. Our analysis reveals that IPS affects the polarized flux densities of the Stokes I, Q, and U parameters, whereas Stokes V shows no detectable IPS-induced variations. The IPS variations detected in Stokes I are synchronous with those in Stokes U, while those in Stokes Q exhibit greater randomness. The crosscorrelation function (CCF) results indicate no time delay between Stokes I and U, but a delay of approximately 2.8 seconds between Stokes I and Q. This suggests that the different polarized radio emissions of 3C 286 originate from distinct emission regions, specifically the core and the southwestern jet. Furthermore, the projections of the radio core and jet component onto the scintillation screen at 1 AU yield a solar wind plasma speed of $\sim 637$ km/s.

Polarized quasi-periodic oscillations reveal kink instability in magnetized jets of black holes

The dynamics and instability of the magnetized jets connected to jet acceleration are complicated and are not yet well understood. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) as special timing features in black hole systems can directly probe dynamics and structure of accreting and outflow materials. Recently, GHz-band radio polarization oscillations in a stellar-mass black hole are reported, and the physical origin is unclear. We propose that the QPOs in both radio flux and linear polarization will be connected to kink instability in relativistic magnetized jets. The simulations are performed to fit the observed curves of radio flux and linear polarization modulations, in addition, the kink instability model well explains the anti-correlation between flux and linear polarization. These polarized QPOs provide evidence for kink stability in relativistic jets, a phenomenon of significant theoretical importance for understanding the magnetic field configuration near the black hole, as well as for particle acceleration in jets.

Quasi-periodic oscillations of GHz-band polarization in a black hole

Relativistic jets from accreting black holes (BHs) radiate non-thermal emission which is highly variable in different time scales. Magnetic fields anchored to a rotating BH or accretion disc accelerate and collimate jets of the BH systems. Previous studies on black holes of different mass scales, including supermassive and stellar-mass black holes, only report flux quasi-periodic oscillations in radio, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. No quasi-periodic variations in polarization have yet been detected in any black hole systems. Here, we report the first detection of GHz radio polarization oscillations in GRS 1915+105, which harbors a spinning stellar-mass BH with a relativistic jet. Our observations show that during the increasing phase of radio emission, linear polarization and flux exhibit similar oscillation periods of $\sim 17$ and $33$ seconds, and their variation patterns anti-correlate with each other. These rare, short-period oscillations in both polarization and flux would be important to understand instabilities and special dynamics in magnetized jets.

A White Dwarf Binary Candidate Discovered by LAMOST Using Dynamical Method

We present the discovery of a binary system containing a white dwarf candidate using data from the LAMOST. Our analysis of the radial velocity data allowed us to determine an orbital period of approximately 0.953 days and a mass function of 0.129 $M_\odot$. Through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, we obtained the stellar parameters of the visible star. By combining these results with the mass function, we established a relationship between the mass of the invisible star and the system's inclination angle, along with the Roche lobe radius. We find that the mass of the invisible star is below the Chandrasekhar limit when the inclination angle exceeds $35^\circ$. Given that systems with large variations in radial velocity typically have high inclination angles, we classify the invisible star as a white dwarf candidate. The Roche lobe radius exceeds the physical radius of the visible star, indicating that no mass transfer occurs, which results in a weak ellipsoidal modulation effect. Additionally, we obtained light curves from the TESS, ASAS-SN, and CRTS surveys. The light curves also exhibit a periodicity of approximately 0.95 days, with ellipsoidal modulation only in the 2019 TESS observations. Coupled with the strong $\rm H_α$ emission line observed in the LAMOST MRS spectrum, we infer that the surface of the visible star contains significant hot spots. This obscures the system's inherently weak ellipsoidal modulation, resulting in a manifestation of rotational variables. Furthermore, an analysis of the dynamical characteristics of this system indicates that it has a high inclination angle ($>60$ degrees) and its orbital properties are consistent with those of typical thin disk stars, supporting the hypothesis that the invisible object is a white dwarf.

Exploring Heavy Higgs Bosons at a 100 TeV Hadron Collider within the Semi-Constrained NMSSM

In this study, we explore the detectability of heavy Higgs bosons in the $pp \to b\bar{b}H/A \to b\bar{b}t\bar{t}$ channel at a 100 TeV hadron collider within the semi-constrained Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). We calculate their production cross sections and decay branching ratios, comparing these with simulation results from existing reference. We focus on the heavy, doublet-dominated CP-even Higgs $H$ and CP-odd Higgs $A$, with mass limits set below 10 TeV to ensure detectability. We find that at a collider with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, the potential for detecting heavy Higgs bosons varies significantly with their mass and $\tanβ$. Heavy Higgs bosons below 2 TeV are within the testable range, while those heavier than 7 TeV fall below the exclusion and discovery thresholds, rendering them undetectable. For masses between 2 and 7 TeV, heavy Higgs bosons with $\tanβ$ less than 20 can be detected, whereas those with $\tanβ$ greater than 20 are beyond the current discovery or exclusion capabilities.

Sub-second periodic radio oscillations in a microquasar

Powerful relativistic jets are one of the ubiquitous features of accreting black holes in all scales. GRS 1915+105 is a well-known fast-spinning black-hole X-ray binary with a relativistic jet, termed as a ``microquasar'', as indicated by its superluminal motion of radio emission. It exhibits persistent x-ray activity over the last 30 years, with quasi-periodic oscillations of $\sim 1-10$ Hz and 34 and 67 Hz in the x-ray band. These oscillations likely originate in the inner accretion disk, but other origins have been considered. Radio observations found variable light curves with quasi-periodic flares or oscillations with periods of $\sim 20-50$ minutes. Here we report two instances of $\sim$5 Hz transient periodic oscillation features from the source detected in the 1.05-1.45 GHz radio band that occurred in January 2021 and June 2022, respectively. Circular polarization was also observed during the oscillation phase.
