Regularization of Electroweak Monopole by Charge Screening and BPS Energy Bound

We show that the electroweak monopole can be regularized with a non-vacuum electromagnetic permittivity. This allows us to set a new BPS bound for the monopole mass, which implies that the mass may not be smaller than 2.98 TeV, more probably 3.75 TeV. We demonstrate that the same method can also regularize the Dirac monopole, which enhances the possibility to construct the Dirac monopole of mass of a few hundred meV in condensed matters. We discuss the physical implications of our result.

Hidden charm pentaquarks with color-octet substructure in QCD Sum Rules

We study the hidden-charm pentaquark states $udsc\bar{c}$ with spins 1/2, 3/2, and 5/2 within the QCD sum-rule approach. First, we construct the currents for the particular configuration of pentaquark states that consist of the flavor singlet three-quark cluster $uds$ of spins 1/2 and 3/2 and the two-quark cluster $\bar cc$ of spin 1, where both clusters are in a color-octet state. From the QCD sum rules obtained by the operator product expansion up to dimension-10 condensates, the extracted masses for the pentaquark states $uds$-$\bar{c}c$ are about 4.6 GeV (5.6 GeV) for spin 1/2$^\pm$, about 5.1 GeV (6.0 GeV) for spin 3/2$^\pm$, about 6.1 GeV (5.9 GeV) for spin 5/2$^\pm$, where the masses of the positive parity states are given in parentheses. Additionally, based on the flavor singlet pentaquark states, it is also shown that other pentaquark states of clusters like $udc$-$\bar{c}s$ and $usc$-$\bar cd$ lead to masses similar to the $uds$-$\bar cc$ case within error bars. Furthermore, in order to see whether any of the states, observed by the LHCb Collaboration, could be understood as the pentaquark of two clusters in the color-octet state, we study the pentaquark formed by the two clusters $udc$-$\bar cu$, where the three-quark cluster is assumed to have the same flavor structure as the above $uds$ cluster. We come to the conclusion that if the observed pentaquark will be found to have spin 1/2 and negative parity, then it could be described as a state of two color-octet clusters.

Conditions for vacuum instability in holographic theories with dilaton field

We investigate the vacuum instability in the presence of dilaton field in a holographic set up. Although the dilaton is a bulk field, it leads to the vacuum instability on the boundary. We show that the whole process crucially depends on the probe brane position and as well on the radial coordinate. So that the effects of dilaton scale parameter in different regions of the bulk or for different probe brane positions are different. We also observe that in our study the temperature can strengthen the effect of scale parameter in reducing the potential barrier. Finally, we show that this Schwinger-like effect, although is interesting by itself, does not produce a considerable pair production rate.

Kinematic surprises in twisted particle collisions

"Twisted particles" refer to non-plane-wave states of photons, electrons, hadrons, or any other particle which carry non-zero, adjustable orbital angular momentum with respect to their average propagation direction. Twisted photons and electrons have already been experimentally demonstrated, and one can expect creation of twisted states of other particles in future. Such states can be brought in collisions, offering a completely new degree of freedom in collider experiments and, especially, a novel tool for hadronic physics. We recently showed that $2 \to 1$ processes with two twisted particles such as resonance production in twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation give access to observables which are difficult or impossible to probe in the usual plane-wave collisions. In this paper, we discuss in detail surprising kinematic features of this process, focusing on spinless particle annihilation. They include (1) a new dimension in the final momentum space available in twisted annihilation, (2) interference fringes emerging in the cross section as a function of the total energy, and (3) the built-in mass spectrometric capability of this process, that is, simultaneous production and automatic angular separation of several resonances with different masses in monochromatic twisted particle annihilation experiment running at fixed energy. All these features cannot be obtained in the usual plane wave collision setting.

Doing spin physics with unpolarized particles

Twisted, or vortex, particles refer to freely propagating non-plane-wave states with helicoidal wave fronts. In this state, the particle possesses a non-zero orbital angular momentum with respect to its average propagation direction. Twisted photons and electrons have been experimentally demonstrated, and creation of other particles in twisted states can be anticipated. If brought in collisions, twisted states offer a new degree of freedom to particle physics, and it is timely to analyze what new insights may follow. Here, we theoretically investigate resonance production in twisted photon collisions and twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation and show that these processes emerge as a completely novel probe of spin and parity-sensitive observables in fully inclusive cross sections with unpolarized initial particles. This is possible because the initial state with a non-zero angular momentum explicitly breaks the left-right symmetry even when averaging over helicities. In particular, we show how one can produce almost $100\%$ polarized vector mesons in unpolarized twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation and how to control its polarization state.

Fate of the Landau-Yang theorem for twisted photons

Landau-Yang theorem is sometimes formulated as a selection rule forbidding two real (that is, non-virtual) photons with zero total momentum to be in the state of the total angular momentum J=1. In this paper we discuss whether the theorem itself and this particular formulation can be extended to a pair of two {\em twisted} photons, which carry orbital angular momentum with respect to their propagation direction. We point out possible sources of confusion, which may arise both from the unusual features of twisted photons and from the fact that usual proofs of the Landau-Yang theorem operate in the center of motion reference frame, which, strictly speaking, exists only for plane waves. We show with an explicit calculation that a pair of twisted photons does have a non-zero overlap with the J=1 state. What is actually forbidden is production of a spin-1 particle by such a photon pair, and in this formulation the Landau-Yang theorem is rock-solid. Although both the twisted photon pair and the spin-1 particle can exist in the J=1 state, these two systems just cannot be coupled in a gauge-invariant and Lorentz invariant manner respecting Bose symmetry.

Relativistic quantum-mechanical description of twisted paraxial electron and photon beams

The analysis of twisted (vortex) paraxial photons and electrons is fulfilled in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. The use of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation radically simplifies a description of relativistic electrons and clarifies fundamental properties of twisted particles. It is demonstrated that the twisted photon defined by the Laguerre-Gauss wave function is luminal. Its apparent subluminality takes place because the photon energy is contributed by the hidden transversal motion while the average transversal momentum vanishes. Nevertheless, the Laguerre-Gauss photon can be self-consistently modeled by a subluminal centroid with a nonzero kinematic (Lorentz-invariant) mass. An applicability of this model is a consequence of independence of centroid parameters from the longitudinal coordinate. All twisted and untwisted Laguerre-Gauss modes are subliminal. The Laguerre-Gauss electron has similar properties. The new effect of a quantization of the velocity and mass of the Laguerre-Gauss photon and electron is predicted. This effect is observable for the photon. The twisted photon and electron modeled by the centroids are considered in the general noninertial frame. Their inertial masses coinciding with kinematic ones are determined. The orbital magnetic moment of the Laguerre-Gauss electron does not depend on the radial quantum number.

Extracting the longitudinal structure function FL(x,Q2) at small x from a Froissart-bounded parametrization of F2(x,Q2)

We present a method to extract, in the leading and next-to-leading order approximations, the longitudinal deep-inelastic scattering structure function FL(x,Q2) from the experimental data by relying on a Froissart-bounded parametrization of the transversal structure function F2(x,Q2) and, partially, on the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equations. Particular attention is paid on kinematics of low and ultra low values of the Bjorken variable x. Analytical expressions for FL(x,Q2) in terms of the effective parameters of the parametrization of F2(x,Q2) are presented explicitly. We argue that the obtained structure functions FL(x,Q2) within both, the leading and next-to-leading order approximations, manifestly obey the Froissart boundary conditions. Numerical calculations and comparison with available data from ZEUS and H1-Collaborations at HERA demonstrate that the suggested method provides reliable structure functions FL(x,Q2) at low x in a wide range of the momentum transfer (1 GeV2 < Q2 < 3000 GeV2) and can be applied as well in analyses of ultra-high energy processes with cosmic neutrinos.

Marchenko method with incomplete data and singular nucleon scattering

We apply the Marchenko method of quantum inverse scattering to study nucleon scattering problems. Assuming a $β/r^2$ type repulsive core and comparing our results to the Reid93 phenomenological potential we estimate the constant $β$, determining the singularity strength, in various spin/isospin channels. Instead of using Bargmann type S-matrices which allows only integer singularity strength, here we consider an analytical approach based on the incomplete data method, which is suitable for fractional singularity strengths as well.

Relativistic quantum dynamics of twisted electron beams in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields

General relativistic quantum dynamics of twisted (vortex) Dirac particles is constructed. The Hamiltonian and equations of motion in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are derived for a twisted relativistic electron in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. A critical experiment for a verification of the results is proposed. The new important effect of a radiative orbital polarization of a twisted electron beam in a magnetic field resulting in a nonzero average projection of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum on the field direction is predicted.

Electric quadrupole moment and the tensor magnetic polarizability of twisted electrons and a potential for their measurements

For a twisted (vortex) Dirac particle in nonuniform electric and magnetic fields, the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is derived including high order terms describing new effects. The result obtained shows for the first time that a twisted spin-1/2 particle possesses a tensor magnetic polarizability and a measurable (spectroscopic) electric quadrupole moment. We have calculated the former parameter and have evaluated the latter one for a twisted electron. The tensor magnetic polarizability of the twisted electron can be measured in a magnetic storage ring because a beam with an initial orbital tensor polarization acquires a horizontal orbital vector polarization. The electric quadrupole moment is rather large and strongly influences the dynamics of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum. Three different methods of its measurements, freezing the intrinsic orbital angular momentum and two resonance methods, are proposed. The existence of the quadrupole moment of twisted electrons can lead to practical applications.

Probing Two types of Gluon Jets at LHC

We propose a simple way to test the Abelian decomposition of QCD, the existence of two types of gluons, experimentally at LHC. The Abelian decomposition decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and colored chromons gauge independently. This refines the Feynman diagram in a way that the color conservation is explicit, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model. We predict that the neuron jet has the color factor 3/4 and has a sharpest jet radius and smallest particle multiplicity, while the chromon jet with the color factor 9/4 remains the broadest jet. Moreover, the neuron jet has a distinct color flow which forms an ideal color dipole, while the quark and chromon jets have distorted dipole pattern.

Abelian Decomposition and Glueball-Quarkonium Mixing in QCD

The Abelian decomposition of QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral binding gluons (the neurons) and the colored valence gluons (the chromons) gauge independently naturally generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model which could play the central role in hadron spectroscopy. We discuss the color reflection symmetry, the fundamental symmetry of the quark and chromon model, and explain how it describes the glueballs and the glueball-quarkonium mixing in QCD. We present the numerical analysis of glueball-quarkonium mixing in $0^{++}$, $2^{++}$, and $0^{-+}$ sectors below 2 GeV, and show that in the $0^{++}$ sector $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(1500)$, in the $2^{++}$ sector $f_2(1950)$, and in the $0^{-+}$ sector $η(1405)$ and $η(1475)$ could be identified as predominantly the glueball states. We discuss the physical implications of our result.

The role of electron orbital angular momentum in the Aharonov-Bohm effect revisited

This is a brief review on the theoretical interpretation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, which also contains our new insight into the problem. A particular emphasis is put on the unique role of electron orbital angular momentum, especially viewed from the novel concept of the physical component of the gauge field, which has been extensively discussed in the context of the nucleon spin decomposition problem as well as the photon angular momentum decomposition problem. Practically, we concentrate on the frequently discussed idealized setting of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, i.e. the interference phenomenon of the electron beam passing around the infinitely-long solenoid. One of the most puzzling observations in this Aharonov-Bohm solenoid effect is that the pure-gauge potential outside the solenoid appears to carry non-zero orbital angular momentum. Through the process of tracing its dynamical origin, we try to answer several fundamental questions of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, which includes the question about the reality of the electromagnetic potential, the gauge-invariance issue, and the non-locality interpretation, etc.

Neutron-proton scattering and singular potentials

We consider a Bargmann-type rational parametrization of the nucleon scattering phase shifts. Applying Marchenko's method of quantum inverse scattering we show that the scattering data suggest a singular repulsive core of the potential of the form $2/r^2$ and $6/r^2$ in natural units, for the ${}^3S_1$ and ${}^1S_0$ channels respectively. The simplest solution in the ${}^3S_1$ channel contains three parameters only but reproduces all features of the potential and bound state wave function within one percent error. We also consider the ${}^3S_1$-${}^3D_1$ coupled channel problem with the coupled channel Marchenko inversion method.

Knots in Physics

After Dirac introduced the monopole, topological objects have played increasingly important roles in physics. In this review we discuss the role of the knot, the most sophisticated topological object in physics, and related topological objects in various areas in physics. In particular, we discuss how the knots appear in Maxwell's theory, Skyrme theory, and multi-component condensed matter physics.
