Relative eta invariant and uniformly positive scalar curvature on non-compact manifolds

On complete non-compact manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we consider a class of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators called Dirac-Schrödinger operators. Assuming two Dirac-Schrödinger operators coincide at infinity, by previous work, one can define their relative eta invariant. A typical example of Dirac-Schrödinger operators is the (twisted) spin Dirac operators on spin manifolds which admit a Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature. In this case, using the relative eta invariant, we get a geometric formula for the spectral flow on non-compact manifolds, which induces a new proof of Gromov-Lawson's result about compact area enlargeable manifolds in odd dimensions. When two such spin Dirac operators are the boundary restriction of an operator on a manifold with non-compact boundary, under certain conditions, we obtain an index formula involving the relative eta invariant. This generalizes the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to non-compact boundary situation. As a result, we can use the relative eta invariant to study the space of uniformly positive scalar curvature metrics on some non-compact connected sums.

The odd-dimensional long neck problem via spectral flow

In this paper, we establish a scalar-mean curvature comparison theorem for the long neck problem on odd-dimensional spin manifolds. This extends previous work of Cecchini and Zeidler, and gives a complete answer to Gromov's long neck problem in terms of spin manifolds. As a related question, we prove a quantitative version of Llarull's theorem on non-compact spin manifolds. Our results are derived by studying the spectral flow of a family of Callias operators.

Spectral flow of Callias operators, odd K-cowaist, and positive scalar curvature

On a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, we study the spectral flow of a family of Callias operators. We derive a codimension zero formula when the dimension of $M$ is odd and a codimension one formula when the dimension of $M$ is even. These can be seen as analogues of Gromov--Lawson's relative index theorem and classical Callias index theorem, respectively. Secondly, we introduce an intrinsic definition of K-cowaist on odd-dimensional manifolds, making use of the odd Chern character of a smooth map from the manifold to a unitary group. It behaves just like the usual K-cowaist on even-dimensional manifolds. We then apply the notion of odd K-cowaist and the tool of spectral flow to investigate problems related to positive scalar curvature on spin manifolds. In particular, we prove infinite odd K-cowaist to be an obstruction to the existence of PSC metrics. We obtain quantitative scalar curvature estimates on complete non-compact manifolds and scalar-mean curvature estimates on compact manifolds with boundary. They extend several previous results optimally, which unfolds a major advantage of our method via spectral flow and odd K-cowaist.

The relative eta invariant for a pair of Dirac-type operators on non-compact manifolds

Let $\mathcal{A}_0$ and $\mathcal{A}_1$ be two self-adjoint Fredholm Dirac-type operators defined on two non-compact manifolds. If they coincide at infinity so that the relative heat operator is trace-class, one can define their relative eta function as in the compact case. The regular value of this function at the zero point, which we call the relative eta invariant of $\mathcal{A}_0$ and $\mathcal{A}_1$, is a generalization of the eta invariant to non-compact situation. We study its variation formula and gluing law. In particular, under certain conditions, we show that this relative eta invariant coincides with the relative eta invariant that we previously defined using APS index of strongly Callias-type operators.

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index on manifolds with non-compact boundary

We study the index of the APS boundary value problem for a strongly Callias-type operator D on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. We show that this index is equal to an index on a simpler manifold whose boundary is a disjoint union of two complete manifolds $N_0$ and $N_1$. If the dimension of $M$ is odd we show that the latter index depends only on the restrictions $A_0$ and $A_1$ of $D$ to $N_0$ and $N_1$ and thus is an invariant of the boundary. We use this invariant to define the relative eta-invariant $η(A_1,A_0)$. We show that even though in our situation the eta-invariants of $A_1$ and $A_0$ are not defined, the relative eta-invariant behaves as if it was the difference $η(A_1)-η(A_0)$.

REBOUNDx: A Library for Adding Conservative and Dissipative Forces to Otherwise Symplectic N-body Integrations

Symplectic methods, in particular the Wisdom-Holman map, have revolutionized our ability to model the long-term, conservative dynamics of planetary systems. However, many astrophysically important effects are dissipative. The consequences of incorporating such forces into otherwise symplectic schemes is not always clear. We show that moving to a general framework of non-commutative operators (dissipative or not) clarifies many of these questions, and that several important properties of symplectic schemes carry over to the general case. In particular, we show that explicit splitting schemes generically exploit symmetries in the applied external forces which often strongly suppress integration errors. Furthermore, we demonstrate that so-called `symplectic correctors' (which reduce energy errors by orders of magnitude at fixed computational cost) apply equally well to weakly dissipative systems and can thus be more generally thought of as `weak splitting correctors.' Finally, we show that previously advocated approaches of incorporating additional forces into symplectic methods work well for dissipative forces, but give qualitatively wrong answers for conservative but velocity-dependent forces like post-Newtonian corrections. We release REBOUNDx, an open-source C library for incorporating additional effects into REBOUND N-body integrations, together with a convenient Python wrapper. All effects are machine-independent and we provide a binary format that interfaces with the SimulationArchive class in REBOUND to enable the sharing and reproducibility of results. Users can add effects from a list of pre-implemented astrophysical forces, or contribute new ones.

APS index theorem for even-dimensional manifolds with non-compact boundary

We study the index of the APS boundary value problem for a strongly Callias-type operator $D$ on a complete even dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ (the odd dimensional case was considered in our previous paper arXiv:1706.06737). We use this index to define the relative $η$-invariant $η(A_1,A_0)$ of two strongly Callias-type operators, which are equal outside of a compact set. Even though in our situation the $η$-invariants of $A_1$ and $A_0$ are not defined, the relative $η$-invariant behaves as if it were the difference $η(A_1)-η(A_0)$. We also define the spectral flow of a family of such operators and use it compute the variation of the relative $η$-invariant.

The index of a local boundary value problem for strongly Callias-type operators

We consider a complete Riemannian manifold M whose boundary is a disjoint union of finitely many complete connected Riemannian manifolds. We compute the index of a local boundary value problem for a strongly Callias-type operator on M. Our result extends an index theorem of D. Freed to non-compact manifolds, thus providing a new insight on the Horava-Witten anomaly.

Cobordism Invariance of the Index of Callias-Type Operators

We introduce a notion of cobordism of Callias-type operators over complete Riemannian manifolds and prove that the index is preserved by such a cobordism. As an application we prove a gluing formula for Callias-type index. In particular, a usual index of an elliptic operator on a compact manifold can be computed as a sum of indexes of Callias-type operators on two non-compact, but topologically simpler manifolds. As another application we give a new proof of the relative index theorem for Callias-type operators, which also leads to a new proof of the Callias index theorem.

Singularities of Connection Ricci Flow and Ricci Harmonic Flow

In this paper, we study the singularities of two extended Ricci flow systems --- connection Ricci flow and Ricci harmonic flow using newly-defined curvature quantities. Specifically, we give the definition of three types of singularities and their corresponding singularity models, and then prove the convergence. In addition, for Ricci harmonic flow, we use the monotonicity of functional $ν_α$ to show the connection between finite-time singularity and shrinking Ricci harmonic soliton. At last, we explore the property of ancient solutions for Ricci harmonic flow.
