Uniqueness of isometric immersions with the same mean curvature

Motivated by the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity, we study the rigidity of isometric immersions with the same mean curvature into a warped product space. As a corollary of our main result, two star-shaped hypersurfaces in a spatial Schwarzschild or AdS-Schwarzschild manifold with nonzero mass differ only by a rotation if they are isometric and have the same mean curvature. We also give similar results if the mean curvature condition is replaced by an $σ_2$-curvature condition.

Variation and rigidity of quasi-local mass

Inspired by the work of Chen-Zhang \cite{Chen-Zhang}, we derive an evolution formula for the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy in reference to a static space, introduced by Chen-Wang-Wang-Yau \cite{CWWY}. If the reference static space represents a mass minimizing, static extension of the initial surface $Σ$, we observe that the derivative of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy is equal to the derivative of the Bartnik quasi-local mass at $Σ$. Combining the evolution formula for the quasi-local energy with a localized Penrose inequality proved in \cite{Lu-Miao}, we prove a rigidity theorem for compact $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, with boundary. This rigidity theorem in turn gives a characterization of the equality case of the localized Penrose inequality in $3$-dimension.

On compact $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature with a CMC boundary component

We apply the Riemannian Penrose inequality and the Riemannian positive mass theorem to derive inequalities on the boundary of a class of compact Riemannian $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. The boundary of such a manifold has a CMC component, i.e. a $2$-sphere with positive constant mean curvature; and the rest of the boundary, if nonempty, consists of closed minimal surfaces. A key step in our proof is the construction of a collar extension that is inspired by the method of Mantoulidis-Schoen \cite{M-S}.

Static potentials and area minimizing hypersurfaces

We show that if an asymptotically flat manifold with horizon boundary admits a global static potential, then the static potential must be zero on the boundary. We also show that if an asymptotically flat manifold with horizon boundary admits an unbounded static potential in the exterior region, then the manifold must contain a complete non-compact area minimizing hypersurface. Some results related to the Riemannian positive mass theorem and Bartnik's quasi-local mass are obtained.

Minimal hypersurfaces and boundary behavior of compact manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature

On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary having positive mean curvature, a fundamental result of Shi and Tam states that, if the manifold has nonnegative scalar curvature and if the boundary is isometric to a strictly convex hypersurface in the Euclidean space, then the total mean curvature of the boundary is no greater than the total mean curvature of the corresponding Euclidean hypersurface. In $3$-dimension, Shi-Tam's result is known to be equivalent to the Riemannian positive mass theorem. In this paper, we provide a supplement to Shi-Tam's result by including the effect of minimal hypersurfaces on the boundary. More precisely, given a compact manifold $Ω$ with nonnegative scalar curvature, assuming its boundary consists of two parts, $Σ_h$ and $Σ_o$, where $Σ_h$ is the union of all closed minimal hypersurfaces in $Ω$ and $Σ_o$ is isometric to a suitable $2$-convex hypersurface $Σ$ in a spatial Schwarzschild manifold of positive mass $m$, we establish an inequality relating $m$, the area of $Σ_h$, and two weighted total mean curvatures of $Σ_o$ and $ Σ$. In $3$-dimension, the inequality has implications to both isometric embedding and quasi-local mass problems. In a relativistic context, our result can be interpreted as a quasi-local mass type quantity of $ Σ_o$ being greater than or equal to the Hawking mass of $Σ_h$. We further analyze the limit of such quasi-local mass quantity associated with suitably chosen isometric embeddings of large coordinate spheres of an asymptotically flat $3$-manifold $M$ into a spatial Schwarzschild manifold. We show that the limit equals the ADM mass of $M$. It follows that our result on the compact manifold $Ω$ is equivalent to the Riemannian Penrose inequality.

Asymptotically flat extensions of CMC Bartnik data

Let $g$ be a metric on the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ with positive Gaussian curvature and $H$ be a positive constant. Under suitable conditions on $(g, H)$, we construct smooth, asymptotically flat $3$-manifolds $M$ with non-negative scalar curvature, with outer-minimizing boundary isometric to $(\mathbb{S}^2, g)$ and having mean curvature $H$, such that near infinity $M$ is isometric to a spatial Schwarzschild manifold whose mass $m$ can be made arbitrarily close to a constant multiple of the Hawking mass of $(\mathbb{S}^2,g,H)$. Moreover, this constant multiplicative factor depends only on $(g, H)$ and tends to $1$ as $H$ tends to $0$. The result provides a new upper bound of the Bartnik mass associated to such boundary data.

On a Penrose-like inequality in dimensions less than eight

On an asymptotically flat manifold $M^n$ with nonnegative scalar curvature, with outer minimizing boundary $Σ$, we prove a Penrose-like inequality in dimensions $ n < 8$, under suitable assumptions on the mean curvature and the scalar curvature of $ Σ$.

Total mean curvature, scalar curvature, and a variational analog of Brown-York mass

We study the supremum of the total mean curvature on the boundary of compact, mean-convex 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, and a prescribed boundary metric. We establish an additivity property for this supremum and exhibit rigidity for maximizers assuming the supremum is attained. When the boundary consists of 2-spheres, we demonstrate that the finiteness of the supremum follows from the previous work of Shi-Tam and Wang-Yau on the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity. In turn, we define a variational analog of Brown-York quasi-local mass without assuming that the boundary 2-sphere has positive Gauss curvature.

Higher dimensional black hole initial data with prescribed boundary metric

We obtain higher dimensional analogues of the results of Mantoulidis and Schoen in [8]. More precisely, we show that (i) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $3$-sphere $S^3$ can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be arranged to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value specified by the Riemannian Penrose inequality; (ii) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $n$-sphere $S^n$, with $ n \ge 4 $, such that $(S^n, g)$ isometrically embeds into $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ as a star-shaped hypersurface, can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be made to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value.

Some functionals on compact manifolds with boundary

We analyze critical points of two functionals of Riemannian metrics on compact manifolds with boundary. These functionals are motivated by formulae of the mass functionals of asymptotically flat and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.

A functional inequality on the boundary of static manifolds

On the boundary of a compact Riemannian manifold $(Ω, g)$ whose metric $g$ is static, we establish a functional inequality involving the static potential of $(Ω, g)$, the second fundamental form and the mean curvature of the boundary $\partial Ω$ respectively.

Quasi-local mass integrals and the total mass

On asymptotically flat and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, by evaluating the total mass via the Ricci tensor, we show that the limits of certain Brown-York type and Hawking type quasi-local mass integrals equal the total mass of the manifold in all dimensions.

Variational and rigidity properties of static potentials

In this paper we study some global properties of static potentials on asymptotically flat $3$-manifolds $(M,g)$ in the nonvacuum setting. Heuristically, a static potential $f$ represents the (signed) length along $M$ of an irrotational timelike Killing vector field, which can degenerate on surfaces corresponding to the zero set of $f$. Assuming a suitable version of the null energy condition, we prove that a noncompact component of the zero set must be area minimizing. From this we obtain some rigidity results for static potentials that have noncompact zero set components, or equivalently, that are unbounded. Roughly speaking, these results show, at the pure initial data level, that `boost-type' Killing vector fields can exist only under special circumstances.

Evaluation of the ADM mass and center of mass via the Ricci tensor

We prove directly without using a density theorem that (i) the ADM mass defined in the usual way on an asymptotically flat manifold is equal to the mass defined intrinsically using Ricci tensor; (ii) the Hamiltonian formulation of center of mass and the center of mass defined intrinsically using Ricci tensor are the same.

Boundary Effect of Ricci Curvature

On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, we study how Ricci curvature of the interior affects the geometry of the boundary. First we establish integral inequalities for functions defined solely on the boundary and apply them to obtain geometric inequalities involving the total mean curvature. Then we discuss related rigidity questions and prove Ricci curvature rigidity results for manifolds with boundary.

Static potentials on asymptotically flat manifolds

We consider the question whether a static potential on an asymptotically flat 3-manifold can have nonempty zero set which extends to the infinity. We prove that this does not occur if the metric is asymptotically Schwarzschild with nonzero mass. If the asymptotic assumption is relaxed to the usual assumption under which the total mass is defined, we prove that the static potential is unique up to scaling unless the manifold is flat. We also provide some discussion concerning the rigidity of complete asymptotically flat 3-manifolds without boundary that admit a static potential.

Extensions and fill-ins with nonnegative scalar curvature

Motivated by the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity, we apply the asymptotically flat extensions, constructed by Shi and Tam in the proof of the positivity of the Brown--York mass, to study a fill-in problem of realizing geometric data on a 2-sphere as the boundary of a compact 3-manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature. We characterize the relationship between two borderline cases: one in which the Shi--Tam extension has zero total mass, and another in which fill-ins of nonnegative scalar curvature fail to exist. Additionally, we prove a type of positive mass theorem in the latter case.
