Sketching a Space of Brain States

Brain functional connectivity alterations, that is, pathological changes in the signal exchange between areas of the brain, occur in several neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric ones. They consist in changes in how brain functional networks operate. By conceptualising a brain space as a space whose points are connectome configurations representing brain functional states, changes in brain network functionality can be represented by paths between these points. Paths from a healthy state to a diseased one, or between diseased states as instances of disease progression, are modelled as the action of the Krankheit-Operator, which produces changes from a brain functional state to another. This study proposes a formal representation of the space of brain states and presents its computational definition. References to patients affected by Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer-Perusini's disease are included to discuss the proposed approach and possible developments of the research toward a generalisation.

Density Matrix-based Dynamics for Quantum Robotic Swarms

In a robotic swarm, parameters such as position and proximity to the target can be described in terms of probability amplitudes. This idea led to recent studies on a quantum approach to the definition of the swarm, including a block-matrix representation. However, the size of such matrix-based representation increases drastically with the swarm size, making them impractical for large swarms. Hence, in this work, we propose a new approach for modeling robotic swarms and robotic networks by considering them as mixed quantum states that can be represented mathematically via density matrices. The size of such an approach only depends on the available degrees of freedom of the robot, and not its swarm size and thus scales well to large swarms. Moreover, it also enables the extraction of local information of the robots from the global swarm information contained in the density matrices, facilitating decentralized behavior that aligns with the collective swarm behavior. Our approach is validated on several simulations including large-scale swarms of up to 1000 robots. Finally, we provide some directions for future research that could potentially widen the impact of our approach.

Sonified Quantum Seizures. Sonification of time series in epileptic seizures and simulation of seizures via quantum modelling

We apply sonification strategies and quantum computing to the analysis of an episode of seizure. We first sonify the signal from a selection of channels (from real ECoG data), obtaining a polyphonic sequence. Then, we propose two quantum approaches to simulate a similar episode of seizure, and we sonify the results. The comparison of sonifications can give hints on similarities and discrepancies between real data and simulations, helping refine the \textit{in silico} model. This is a pioneering approach, showing how the combination of quantum computing and sonification can broaden the perspective of real-data investigation, and helping define a new test bench for analysis and prediction of seizures.

Quantum Key Distribution Networks -- Key Management: A Survey

Secure communication makes the widespread use of telecommunication networks and services possible. With the constant progress of computing and mathematics, new cryptographic methods are being diligently developed. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a promising technology that provides an Information-Theoretically Secure (ITS) solution to the secret-key agreement problem between two remote parties. QKD networks based on trusted repeaters are built to provide service to a larger number of parties at arbitrary distances. They function as an add-on technology to traditional networks, generating, managing, distributing, and supplying ITS cryptographic keys. Since key resources are limited, integrating QKD network services into critical infrastructures necessitates effective key management. As a result, this paper provides a comprehensive review of QKD network key management approaches. They are analyzed to facilitate the identification of potential strategies and accelerate the future development of QKD networks.

A Novel Approach to Quality of Service Provisioning in Trusted Relay Quantum Key Distribution Networks

In recent years, noticeable progress has been made in the development of quantum equipment, reflected through the number of successful demonstrations of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology. Although they showcase the great achievements of QKD, many practical difficulties still need to be resolved. Inspired by the significant similarity between mobile ad-hoc networks and QKD technology, we propose a novel quality of service (QoS) model including new metrics for determining the states of public and quantum channels as well as a comprehensive metric of the QKD link. We also propose a novel routing protocol to achieve high-level scalability and minimize consumption of cryptographic keys. Given the limited mobility of nodes in QKD networks, our routing protocol uses the geographical distance and calculated link states to determine the optimal route. It also benefits from a caching mechanism and detection of returning loops to provide effective forwarding while minimizing key consumption and achieving the desired utilization of network links. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed solutions.
