CP violation in H^\pm \to W^\pm Z: A physical approach for the 2HDM

We investigate CP violation in the process H^\pm \to W^\pm Z within the framework of the two-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM). Amplitudes are expressed transparently in terms of physical couplings. Our analysis qualitatively confirms recent results by Kanemura and Mura, for the interference between one-loop bosonic and fermionic amplitudes. Furthermore, we identify additional sources of CP violation arising from internal interference among the bosonic and also among the fermionic loop amplitudes. In the alignment limit, the asymmetry would vanish in the absence of fermionic loop contributions when the sum of the masses of the additional neutral scalars is higher than the mass of the Z. Our results allow for generic Yukawa couplings, and cover both explicit and spontaneous CP violation. For inclusive W^\pm and Z decays, the CP violation will only manifest itself as a charge asymmetry.

New Symmetries of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The Two Higgs Doublet Model invariant under the gauge group SU(2)xU(1) is known to have six additional global discrete or continuous symmetries of its scalar sector. We have discovered regions of parameter space of the model which are basis and renormalization group invariant to all orders of perturbation theory in the scalar and gauge sectors, but correspond to none of the hitherto considered symmetries. We therefore identify seven new symmetries of the model and discuss their phenomenology. Soft symmetry breaking is required for some of these models so that electroweak symmetry breaking can occur. We show that, at least at the two-loop level, it is possible to extend some of these symmetries to include fermions.

Softly broken symmetries in the 2HDM -- an invariant formulation

Soft breaking of a symmetry requires an invariance of the dimension-4 part of the Lagrangian and non-trivial variation of the lower-dimensional part. However, in general, separation between the dim-4 and lower-dimensional Lagrangian is not invariant with respect to basis transformations of fields. Therefore, a natural question of the physical meaning of soft symmetry breaking arises. This problem is addressed here in the framework of two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM). It has been shown, within these models, that in spite of the ambiguity corresponding to the separation between dim-4 and the lower-dimension Lagrangian, implications of the soft symmetry breaking could be formulated in terms of observables, i.e., they are physical and measurable. There are six global symmetries that can be imposed on the scalar sector of the generic 2HDM. Necessary and sufficient tree-level conditions for soft breaking of all of them have been formulated in terms of observables.

Reinterpretation of LHC Results for New Physics: Status and Recommendations after Run 2

We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data.

Roy Glauber and Asymptotic Diffraction Theory

This is a review of Glauber's asymptotic diffraction theory, in which diffractive scattering is described in terms of interference between semiclassical amplitudes, resulting from a stationary-phase approximation. Typically two such amplitudes are sufficient to accurately describe elastic scattering, but the stationary points are located at complex values of the impact parameter. Their separation controls the interference pattern, and their offsets from the real axis determine the overall fall-off with momentum transfer. Asymptotically, at large momentum transfers, the stationary points move towards singularities of the profile function. I also include some reminiscences from our collaboration.

The CP-symmetries of the 2HDM

We discuss the three different classes of CP-symmetries that can be realized in a two-Higgs-doublet model, CP1, CP2 and CP3. We express conditions for realizing these symmetries in terms of masses and couplings of the model, thereby providing a way of verifying which, if any, of these symmetries is realized by nature.

Heavy Higgs boson decays in the alignment limit of the 2HDM

The Standard Model (SM)-like couplings of the observed Higgs boson impose strong constraints on the structure of any extended Higgs sector. We consider the theoretical properties and the phenomenological implications of a generic two Higgs doublet model (2HDM). This model constitutes a simple and attractive extension of the SM that is consistent with the observation of the SM-like Higgs boson and precision electroweak observables, while providing a potential new source of CP-violation. In this paper we focus on the so-called Higgs alignment limit of the generic 2HDM, where the neutral scalar field~$H_1$, with the tree-level couplings of the SM Higgs boson, is a mass eigenstate that is aligned in field space with the direction of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. The properties of the two other heavier neutral Higgs scalars, $H_2$ and $H_3$, in the alignment limit of the 2HDM are also elucidated. It is shown that the couplings of $H_2$ and $H_3$ in the alignment limit are tightly constrained and correlated. For example, in the exact alignment limit at tree level, for bosonic final states $\text{BR}(H_{2,3} \to W^+W^-, ZZ, H_1 Z) = 0$ and $\text{BR}(H^\pm \to W^\pm H_1) = 0$, whereas for fermionic final states $Γ(H_2 \to f\bar f)/Γ(H_3 \to f\bar f) \sim M_2/M_3$ (where $M_α$ is the mass of $H_α$). In some cases, the results of the alignment limit differ depending on whether or not alignment is achieved via the decoupling of heavy scalar states. In particular, in the exact alignment limit without decoupling $\text{BR}(H_{2,3}\to H_1 H_1)=0$, whereas these branching ratios are nonzero in the decoupling regime. Observables that could be used to test the alignment scenario at the LHC are defined and discussed. The couplings of the Higgs bosons away from their exact alignment values are determined to leading order, and some consequences are elucidated.

Charged-Higgs production in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model --- the τνchannel

We update the allowed parameter space of the CP-violating 2HDM with Type II Yukawa couplings, that survives the current experimental and theoretical constraints on the model. For a representative set of allowed parameter points, we study the production of charged Higgs bosons, both at the LHC at 14 TeV and at a possible future hadronic collider at 30 TeV. Two classes of production mechanisms are considered, "bosonic" (pp\to H^\pm W^\mp X) and "fermionic" (pp \to H^+ \bar t (b) X). After commenting on our previous H^\pm\to W^\pm H_1 investigation, we focus on the tauonic decay mode, H^\pm \to τν, performing a detailed signal-over-background analysis at the parton level. The increased features provided when considering CP violation, i.e., the extension of the parameter space and the mixing of the would-be CP-odd scalar boson, only marginally increase the discovery prospects, which remain very challenging both when increased luminosities and higher energies are considered.

From realistic 2HDM-II CPV benchmarks to the $H^\pm \toτν$ decay at the LHC

Phenomenological studies of a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet Model with type-II Yukawa couplings are presented. In the light of recent LHC data, an update on the viable parameter space that survives both the experimental and theoretical constraints is provided. In addition, the scope of the LHC in exploring this model through the discovery of a charged Higgs boson that decays in the tauonic mode is analysed. For this, various production channels were investigated, with emphasis on the boson-associated channel $gg\to H_i\to H^\pm W^\mp$ and the fermion-associated channels $gb\to H^\pm t$ and $gg\to H^\pm bt$. For the latter, a signal-over-background analysis is performed.

The CP-violating type-II 2HDM and Charged Higgs boson benchmarks

We review and update the interpretation of the 125 GeV scalar as the lightest Higgs boson of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, allowing for CP violation in the potential. The detection of a charged Higgs boson would exclude the Standard Model. Proposed benchmarks for charged-Higgs searches in the channel pp\to H^+W^-X\to W^+W^-H_1X are reviewed and updated.

Charged Higgs boson benchmarks in the CP-violating type-II 2HDM

We discuss prospects for discovering a charged Higgs boson in the CP-violating type-II two-Higgs-doublet Model. In the light of recent LHC data, we focus on the parameter space that survives experimental as well as the theoretical constraints on the model. Once the phenomenological scenario is set, we analyse the scope for the LHC to discover a charged Higgs in association with the lightest neutral Higgs and a charged vector boson.

Flavour Structure of R-violating Neutralino Decays at the LHC

We study signatures of R-parity violation in the production of supersymmetric particles at the LHC, and the subsequent decay of the lightest neutralino being the end product of a supersymmetric cascade decay. In doing so, we pay particular attention to the possible flavour structure of the operators, and how one may discriminate between different possibilities. A neutralino LSP would couple to all quarks and leptons and a comparative study of its decays provides an optimal channel for the simultaneous study of all 45 R-violating operators. By studying the expected signals from all these operators, we demonstrate the ability to understand whether more than one coupling dominates, and to map the experimental signatures to operator hierarchies that can then be compared against theoretical models of flavour. Detailed comparisons with backgrounds, including those from MSSM cascade decays are made, using the PYTHIA event simulator.

Tuned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We consider a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) constrained by the condition that assures cancellation of quadratic divergences up to the leading two-loop order. Regions in the parameter space consistent with existing experimental constraints and with the cancellation condition are determined. The possibility for CP violation in the scalar potential is discussed and regions of \tan_β-M_{H^\pm} with substantial amount of CP violation are found. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by lifting the minimal scalar Higgs boson mass and by suppressing the quadratic corrections to scalar masses. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is therefore lifted from ~0.6 TeV in the Standard Model to ~2.5 TeV in the 2HDM, depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

Natural Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We show that the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) constrained by the two-loop-order requirement of cancellation of quadratic divergences is consistent with the existing experimental constraints. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by suppressing the quadratic corrections to scalar masses and lifting the mass of the lightest Higgs boson. A strong source of CP violation emerges from the scalar potential. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is shifted from 0.6 TeV in the Standard Model to >6 TeV in the 2HDM, depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

Trilinear Higgs couplings in the two Higgs doublet model with CP violation

We carry out a detailed analysis of the general two Higgs doublet model with CP violation. We describe two different parametrizations of this model, and then study the Higgs boson masses and the trilinear Higgs couplings for these two parametrizations. Within a rather general model, we find that the trilinear Higgs couplings have a significant dependence on the details of the model, even when the lightest Higgs boson mass is taken to be a fixed parameter. We include radiative corrections in the one-loop effective potential approximation in our analysis of the Higgs boson masses and the Higgs trilinear couplings. The one-loop corrections to the trilinear couplings of the two Higgs doublet model also depend significantly on the details of the model, and can be rather large. We study quantitatively the trilinear Higgs couplings, and show that these couplings are typically several times larger than the corresponding Standard Model trilinear Higgs coupling in some regions of the parameter space. We also briefly discuss the decoupling limit of the two Higgs doublet model.

Polarization-independent CP-odd Observable in e^+e^- Chargino Production at One Loop

We discuss CP violation in the process e^+e^- \to \tildeχ^+_i\tildeχ^-_j with unpolarized beams. When the scalars are heavy, the box-diagram results constitute a major part of the full result. However, there are situations when the vertex and self-energy corrections dominate over the box diagrams. We also comment on CP violation in the final chargino decay.

Constraining the Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model parameter space

We confront the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model with a variety of experimental constraints as well as theoretical consistency conditions. The most constraining data are the \bar B\to X_sγdecay rate (at low values of M_{H^\pm}), and Δρ(at both low and high M_{H^\pm}). We also take into account the B\bar B oscillation rate and R_b, or the width Γ(Z\to b\bar b) (both of which restrict the model at low values of \tanβ), and the B^-\toτν_τdecay rate, which restricts the model at high \tanβand low M_{H^\pm}. Furthermore, the LEP2 non-discovery of a light, neutral Higgs boson is considered, as well as the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Since perturbative unitarity excludes high values of \tanβ, the model turns out to be very constrained. We outline the remaining allowed regions in the \tanβ-M_{H^\pm} plane for different values of the masses of the two lightest neutral Higgs bosons, and describe some of their properties.
