Topology, and (in)stability of non-Abelian monopoles

The stability problem of non-Abelian monopoles with respect to "Brandt-Neri-Coleman type" variations reduces to that of a pure gauge theory on the two-sphere. Each topological sector admits exactly one stable monopole charge, and each unstable monopole admits $2\sum (2|q|-1)$ negative modes, where the sum goes over the negative eigenvalues $q$ of an operator related to the non-Abelian charge $Q$ of Goddard, Nuyts and Olive. An explicit construction for the [up-to-conjugation] unique stable charge, as well as the negative modes of the Hessian at any other charge is given. The relation to loops in the residual group is explained. From the global point of view, the instability is associated with energy-reducing two-spheres, which, consistently with the Morse theory, generate the homology of the configurations space, and whose tangent vectors at a critical point are negative modes. Our spheres might indicate possible decay routes of an unstable monopole as a cascade into lower lying critical points.

Supersymmetry of the planar Dirac - Deser-Jackiw-Templeton system, and of its non-relativistic limit

The planar Dirac and the topologically massive vector gauge fields are unified into a supermultiplet involving no auxiliary fields. The superPoincaré symmetry emerges from the $osp(1|2)$ supersymmetry realized in terms of the deformed Heisenberg algebra underlying the construction. The non-relativistic limit yields spin 1/2 as well as new, spin 1 "Lévy-Leblond-type" equations which, together, carry an N=2 superSchrödinger symmetry. Part of the latter has its origin in the universal enveloping algebra of the superPoincaré algebra.

Bosons, fermions and anyons in the plane, and supersymmetry

Universal vector wave equations allowing for a unified description of anyons, and also of usual bosons and fermions in the plane are proposed. The existence of two essentially different types of anyons, based on unitary and also on non-unitary infinite-dimensional half-bounded representations of the (2+1)D Lorentz algebra is revealed. Those associated with non-unitary representations interpolate between bosons and fermions. The extended formulation of the theory includes the previously known Jackiw-Nair (JN) and Majorana-Dirac (MD) descriptions of anyons as particular cases, and allows us to compose bosons and fermions from entangled anyons. The theory admits a simple supersymmetric generalization, in which the JN and MD systems are unified in N=1 and N=2 supermultiplets. Two different non-relativistic limits of the theory are investigated. The usual one generalizes Levy-Leblond's spin 1/2 theory to arbitrary spin, as well as to anyons. The second, "Jackiw-Nair" limit (that corresponds to Inonu-Wigner contraction with both anyon spin and light velocity going to infinity), is generalized to boson/fermion fields and interpolating anyons. The resulting exotic Galilei symmetry is studied in both the non-supersymmetric and the supersymmetric cases.

Supersymmetry between Jackiw-Nair and Dirac-Majorana anyons

The Jackiw-Nair description of anyons combines spin-1 topologically massive fields with the discrete series representation of the Lorentz algebra, which has fractional spin. In the Dirac-Majorana formulation the spin-1 part is replaced by the spin 1/2 planar Dirac equation. The two models are shown to belong to an N=1 supermultiplet, which carries a super-Poincare symmetry.

Vortices in (abelian) Chern-Simons gauge theory

The vortex solutions of various classical planar field theories with (Abelian) Chern-Simons term are reviewed. Relativistic vortices, put forward by Paul and Khare, arise when the Abelian Higgs model is augmented with the Chern-Simons term. Adding a suitable sixth-order potential and turning off the Maxwell term provides us with pure Chern-Simons theory with both topological and non-topological self-dual vortices, as found by Hong-Kim-Pac, and by Jackiw-Lee-Weinberg. The non-relativistic limit of the latter leads to non-topological Jackiw-Pi vortices with a pure fourth-order potential. Explicit solutions are found by solving the Liouville equation. The scalar matter field can be replaced by spinors, leading to fermionic vortices. Alternatively, topological vortices in external field are constructed in the phenomenological model proposed by Zhang-Hansson-Kivelson. Non-relativistic Maxwell-Chern-Simons vortices are also studied. The Schroedinger symmetry of Jackiw-Pi vortices, as well as the construction of some time-dependent vortices, can be explained by the conformal properties of non-relativistic space-time, derived in a Kaluza-Klein-type framework.

Super-extended noncommutative Landau problem and conformal symmetry

A supersymmetric spin-1/2 particle in the noncommutative plane, subject to an arbitrary magnetic field, is considered, with particular attention paid to the homogeneous case. The system has three different phases, depending on the magnetic field. Due to supersymmetry, the boundary critical phase which separates the sub- and super-critical cases can be viewed as a reduction to the zero-energy eigensubspace. In the sub-critical phase the system is described by the superextension of exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry, combined with the conformal so(2,1) ~ su(1,1) symmetry; the latter is changed into so(3) ~ su(2) in the super-critical phase. In the critical phase the spin degrees of freedom are frozen and supersymmetry disappears.

Bosonized supersymmetry from the Majorana-Dirac-Staunton theory and massive higher-spin fields

We propose a (3+1)D linear set of covariant vector equations, which unify the spin 0 ``new Dirac equation'' with its spin 1/2 counterpart, proposed by Staunton. Our equations describe a spin (0,1/2) supermultiplet with different numbers of degrees of freedom in the bosonic and fermionic sectors. The translation-invariant spin deegres of freedom are carried by two copies of the Heisenberg algebra. This allows us to realize space-time supersymmetry in a bosonized form. The grading structure is provided by an internal reflection operator. Then the construction is generalized by means of the Majorana equation to a supersymmetric theory of massive higher-spin particles. The resulting theory is characterized by a nonlinear symmetry superalgebra, that, in the large-spin limit, reduces to the super-Poincare algebra with or without tensorial central charge.

Bosonized supersymmetry of anyons and supersymmetric exotic particle on the non-commutative plane

A covariant set of linear differential field equations, describing an N=1 supersymmetric anyon system in (2+1)D, is proposed in terms of Wigner's deformation of the bosonic Heisenberg algebra. The non-relativistic ``Jackiw-Nair'' limit extracts the ordinary bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom from the Heisenberg-Wigner algebra. It yields first-order, non-relativistic wave equations for a spinning particle on the non-commutative plane that admits a Galilean exotic planar N=1 supersymmetry.

Nonrelativistic anyons in external electromagnetic field

The first-order, infinite-component field equations we proposed before for non-relativistic anyons (identified with particles in the plane with noncommuting coordinates) are generalized to accommodate arbitrary background electromagnetic fields. Consistent coupling of the underlying classical system to arbitrary fields is introduced; at a critical value of the magnetic field, the particle follows a Hall-like law of motion. The corresponding quantized system reveals a hidden nonlocality if the magnetic field is inhomogeneous. In the quantum Landau problem spectral as well as state structure (finite vs. infinite) asymmetry is found. The bound and scattering states, separated by the critical magnetic field phase, behave as further, distinct phases.

Anyon wave equations and the noncommutative plane

The ``Jackiw-Nair'' non-relativistic limit of the relativistic anyon equations provides us with infinite-component wave equations of the Dirac-Majorana-Levy-Leblond type for the ``exotic'' particle, associated with the two-fold central extension of the planar Galilei group. An infinite dimensional representation of the Galilei group is found. The velocity operator is studied, and the observable coordinates describing a noncommutative plane are identified.

Non-relativistic anyons, exotic Galilean symmetry and noncommutative plane

We show that the Lukierski et al. model, invariant with respect to the two-fold centrally extended Galilei group, can be decomposed into an infinite number of independent copies (differing in their spin) of the ``exotic'' particle of Duval et al. The difference between the two models is found to be sensitive to electromagnetic coupling. The nature of the noncommutative plane coordinates is discussed in the light of the exotic Galilean symmetry. We prove that the first model, interpreted as describing a non-relativistic anyon, is the non-relativistic limit of a particle with torsion related to relativistic anyons.
