Anisotropic Massive Gauge-flation

We study anisotropic inflationary solutions in massive Gauge-flation. We work with the theory in both the Stueckelberg and dynamical symmetry-breaking limits and demonstrate that extended periods of accelerated anisotropic expansion are possible. In the case of dynamical symmetry breaking, we show that spacetime can transition from isotropic quasi-de Sitter space to an accelerating Bianchi spacetime due to a rolling Higgs field - the spacetime can develop hair. Similarly, symmetry restoring transitions are possible from accelerating Bianchi spacetime to quasi-de Sitter space - the spacetime can lose its hair. These transitions can be arranged to occur quickly, within an $e$-folding or so, or over tens of $e$-folds.

Bispectrum in Single-Field Inflation Beyond Slow-Roll

We develop an integral form for the bispectrum in general single-field inflation whose domain of validity includes models of inflation where the background evolution is not constrained to be slowly varying everywhere. Our integral form preserves the squeezed-limit consistency relation, allows for fast evaluation of the bispectrum for all triangle configurations expediting the efficient comparison of slow-roll violating models with data, and provides complete and compact slow-roll expressions correct to first order in slow-roll parameters. Motivated by the recent Planck results, we consider as an example a sharp step in the warped-brane tension of DBI inflation and provide analytic solutions for the peak of the resulting bispectrum. For the step in the warp that reproduces the oscillations in the power spectrum favored by the Planck data, the corresponding equilateral bispectrum is both extremely large and highly scale dependent. The bispectrum serves as a means of distinguishing such a model from alternative scenarios that generate otherwise indistinguishable power spectra, such as a step in the potential in canonical single-field inflation.

Non-Abelian gauge preheating

We study preheating in models where a scalar inflaton is directly coupled to a non-Abelian $SU(2)$ gauge field. In particular, we examine $m^2 ϕ^2$ inflation with a conformal, dilaton-like coupling to the non-Abelian sector. We describe a numerical scheme that combines lattice gauge theory with standard finite difference methods applied to the scalar field. We show that a significant tachyonic instability allows for efficient preheating, which is parametrically suppressed by increasing the non-Abelian self-coupling. Additionally, we comment on the technical implementation of the evolution scheme and setting initial conditions.

Gravitational Leptogenesis, Reheating, and Models of Neutrino Mass

Gravitational leptogenesis refers to a class of baryogenesis models in which the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe arises through the standard model lepton-number gravitational anomaly. In these models chiral gravitational waves source a lepton asymmetry in standard model neutrinos during the inflationary epoch. We point out that gravitational leptogenesis can be successful in either the Dirac or Majorana neutrino mass scenario. In the Dirac mass scenario, gravitational leptogenesis predicts a relic abundance of sterile neutrinos that remain out of equilibrium, and the lepton asymmetry carried by the standard model sector is unchanged. In the Majorana mass scenario, the neutrinos participate in lepton-number-violating interactions that threaten to washout the lepton asymmetry during post-inflationary reheating. However, we show that a complete (exponential) washout of the lepton asymmetry is prevented if the lepton-number-violating interactions go out of equilibrium before all of the standard model Yukawa interactions come into equilibrium. The baryon and lepton asymmetries carried by right-chiral quarks and leptons are sequestered from the lepton-number violation, and the washout processes only suppress the predicted baryon asymmetry by a factor of $\varepsilon_{\rm w.o.} = \pm O(0.1)$. The sign of $\varepsilon_{\rm w.o.}$ depends on the model parameters in such a way that a future measurement of the primordial gravitational wave chirality would constrain the scale of lepton-number violation (heavy Majorana neutrino mass).

Power-counting during single-field slow-roll inflation

We elucidate the counting of the relevant small parameters in inflationary perturbation theory. Doing this allows for an explicit delineation of the domain of validity of the semi-classical approximation to gravity used in the calculation of inflationary correlation functions. We derive an expression for the dependence of correlation functions of inflationary perturbations on the slow-roll parameter $ε= -\dot{H}/H^2$, as well as on $H/M_p$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter during inflation. Our analysis is valid for single-field models in which the inflaton can traverse a Planck-sized range in field values and where all slow-roll parameters have approximately the same magnitude. As an application, we use our expression to seek the boundaries of the domain of validity of inflationary perturbation theory for regimes where this is potentially problematic: models with small speed of sound and models allowing eternal inflation.

Higgsed Gauge-flation

We study a variant of Gauge-flation where the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken by a Higgs sector. We work in the Stueckelberg limit and demonstrate that the dynamics remain (catastrophically) unstable for cases where the gauge field masses satisfy $γ< 2$, where $γ= g^2ψ^2/H^2$, $g$ is the gauge coupling, $ψ$ is the gauge field vacuum expectation value, and $H$ is the Hubble rate. We compute the spectrum of density fluctuations and gravitational waves, and show that the model can produce observationally viable spectra. The background gauge field texture violates parity, resulting in a chiral gravitational wave spectrum. This arises due to an exponential enhancement of one polarization of the spin-2 fluctuation of the gauge field. Higgsed Gauge-flation can produce observable gravitational waves at inflationary energy scales well below the GUT scale.

Fermion production during and after axion inflation

We study derivatively coupled fermions in axion-driven inflation, specifically $m_ϕ^2ϕ^2$ and monodromy inflation, and calculate particle production during the inflationary epoch and the post-inflationary axion oscillations. During inflation, the rolling axion acts as an effective chemical potential for helicity which biases the gravitational production of one fermion helicity over the other. This mechanism allows for efficient gravitational production of heavy fermion states that would otherwise be highly suppressed. Following inflation, the axion oscillates and fermions with both helicities are produced as the effective frequency of the fermion field changes non-adiabatically. For certain values of the fermion mass and axion-fermion coupling strength, the two helicity states are produced asymmetrically, resulting in unequal number-densities of left- and right-helicity fermions.

Gauge-preheating and the end of axion inflation

We study the onset of the reheating epoch at the end of axion-driven inflation where the axion is coupled to an Abelian, $U(1)$, gauge field via a Chern-Simons interaction term. We focus primarily on $m^2ϕ^2$ inflation and explore the possibility that preheating can occur for a range of coupling values consistent with recent observations and bounds on the overproduction of primordial black holes. We find that for a wide range of parameters preheating is efficient. In certain cases the inflaton is seen to transfer all its energy to the gauge fields within a few oscillations. In most cases, we find that the gauge fields on sub-horizon scales end preheating in an unpolarized state due to the existence of strong rescattering between the inflaton and gauge-field modes. We also present a preliminary study of an axion monodromy model coupled to $U(1)$ gauge fields, seeing a similarly efficient preheating behavior as well as indications that the coupling strength has an effect on the creation of oscillons.

Magnetogenesis from axion inflation

In this work we compute the production of magnetic fields in models of axion inflation coupled to the hypercharge sector of the Standard Model through a Chern-Simons interaction term. We make the simplest choice of a quadratic inflationary potential and use lattice simulations to calculate the magnetic field strength, helicity and correlation length at the end of inflation. For small values of the axion-gauge field coupling strength the results agree with no-backreaction calculations and estimates found in the literature. For larger couplings the helicity of the magnetic field differs from the no-backreaction estimate and depends strongly on the comoving wavenumber. We estimate the post-inflationary evolution of the magnetic field based on known results for the evolution of helical and non-helical magnetic fields. The magnetic fields produced by axion inflation with large couplings to $U(1)_Y$ can reach $B_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 10^{-16}\, {\rm G}$, exhibiting a field strength $B_{\rm phys} \approx 10^{-13}\, {\rm G}$ and a correlation length $λ_{\rm phys}\approx10\, {\rm pc}$. This result is insensitive to the exact value of the coupling, as long as the coupling is large enough to allow for instantaneous preheating. Depending on the assumptions for the physical processes that determine blazar properties, these fields can be found consistent with blazar observations based on the value of $B_{\rm eff}$. Finally, the intensity of the magnetic field for large coupling can be enough to satisfy the requirements for a recently proposed baryogenesis mechanism, which utilizes the chiral anomaly of the Standard Model.

Magnon Inflation: Slow Roll with Steep Potentials

We find multi-scalar effective field theories (EFTs) that can achieve a slow inflationary roll despite having a scalar potential that does not satisfy the usual slow-roll condition (d V)^2 << V^2/Mp^2. They evade the usual slow-roll conditions on $V$ because their kinetic energies are dominated by single-derivative terms rather than the usual two-derivative terms. Single derivatives dominate during slow roll and so do not require a breakdown of the usual derivative expansion that underpins calculational control in much of cosmology. The presence of such terms requires some sort of UV Lorentz-symmetry breaking during inflation (besides the usual cosmological breaking). Chromo-natural inflation provides an example of a UV theory that can generate the multi-field single-derivative terms we consider, and we argue that the EFT we find indeed captures the slow-roll conditions for the background evolution for Chromo-natural inflation. We also show that our EFT can be understood as a multi-field generalization of the single-field Cuscuton models. The multi-field case introduces a new feature, however: the scalar kinetic terms define a target-space 2-form, F_{ab}, whose antisymmetry gives new ways for slow roll to be achieved.

CMB-S4 Science Book, First Edition

This book lays out the scientific goals to be addressed by the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background experiment, CMB-S4, envisioned to consist of dedicated telescopes at the South Pole, the high Chilean Atacama plateau and possibly a northern hemisphere site, all equipped with new superconducting cameras. CMB-S4 will dramatically advance cosmological studies by crossing critical thresholds in the search for the B-mode polarization signature of primordial gravitational waves, in the determination of the number and masses of the neutrinos, in the search for evidence of new light relics, in constraining the nature of dark energy, and in testing general relativity on large scales.

Higgsed Chromo-Natural Inflation

We demonstrate that Chromo-Natural Inflation can be made consistent with observational data if the SU(2) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. Working in the Stueckelberg limit, we show that isocurvature is negligible, and the resulting adiabatic fluctuations can match current observational constraints. Observable levels of chirally-polarized gravitational radiation ($r\sim 10^{-3}$) can be produced while the evolution of all background fields is sub-Planckian. The gravitational wave spectrum is amplified via linear mixing with the gauge field fluctuations, and its amplitude is not simply set by the Hubble rate during inflation. This allows observable gravitational waves to be produced for an inflationary energy scale below the GUT scale. The tilt of the resulting gravitational wave spectrum can be either blue or red.

Chilly Dark Sectors and Asymmetric Reheating

In a broad class of theories, the relic abundance of dark matter is determined by interactions internal to a thermalized dark sector, with no direct involvement of the Standard Model (SM). We point out that these theories raise an immediate cosmological question: how was the dark sector initially populated in the early universe? Motivated in part by the difficulty of accommodating large amounts of entropy carried in dark radiation with cosmic microwave background measurements of the effective number of relativistic species at recombination, $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$, we aim to establish which admissible cosmological histories can populate a thermal dark sector that never reaches thermal equilibrium with the SM. The minimal cosmological origin for such a dark sector is asymmetric reheating, when the same mechanism that populates the SM in the early universe also populates the dark sector at a lower temperature. Here we demonstrate that the resulting inevitable inflaton-mediated scattering between the dark sector and the SM can wash out a would-be temperature asymmetry, and establish the regions of parameter space where temperature asymmetries can be generated in minimal reheating scenarios. Thus obtaining a temperature asymmetry of a given size either restricts possible inflaton masses and couplings or necessitates a non-minimal cosmology for one or both sectors. As a side benefit, we develop techniques for evaluating collision terms in the relativistic Boltzmann equation when the full dependence on Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac phase space distributions must be retained, and present several new results on relativistic thermal averages in an appendix.

Leptogenesis from left-handed neutrino production during axion inflation

We propose that the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry can be naturally produced as a byproduct of axion-driven slow-roll inflation by coupling the axion to standard-model neutrinos. We assume that GUT scale right-handed neutrinos are responsible for the masses of the standard model neutrinos and that the Higgs field is light during inflation and develops a Hubble scale vacuum expectation value (VEV). In this set up, the rolling axion generates a helicity asymmetry in standard-model neutrinos. Following inflation, this helicity asymmetry becomes equal to a net lepton number as the Higgs VEV decays and is partially re-processed by the $SU(2)_{L}$ sphaleron into a net baryon number.

Steps to Reconcile Inflationary Tensor and Scalar Spectra

The recent BICEP2 B-mode polarization determination of an inflationary tensor-scalar ratio $r=0.2^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ is in tension with simple scale-free models of inflation due to a lack of a corresponding low multipole excess in the temperature power spectrum which places a limit of $r_{0.002}<0.11$ (95% CL) on such models. Single-field inflationary models that reconcile these two observations, even those where the tilt runs substantially, introduce a scale into the scalar power spectrum. To cancel the tensor excess, and simultaneously explain the excess already present in $Λ$CDM, ideally the model should introduce this scale as a relatively sharp transition in the tensor-scalar ratio around the horizon at recombination. We consider models which generate such a step in this quantity and find that they can improve the joint fit to the temperature and polarization data by up to $2Δ\ln{\cal L} \approx -14$ without changing cosmological parameters. Precision E-mode polarization measurements should be able to test this explanation.

Bounds on non-adiabatic evolution in single-field inflation

We examine the regime of validity of $N$-point spectra predictions of single field inflation models that invoke transient periods of non-adiabatic evolution. Such models generate oscillatory features in these spectra spanning frequencies up to the inverse time scale of the transient feature. To avoid strong coupling of fluctuations in these theories this scale must be at least $\sim 10^{-2}/c_s$ of the Hubble time during inflation, where $c_s$ is the inflaton sound speed. We show that, in such models, the signal-to-noise ratio of the bispectrum is bounded from above by that of the power spectrum, implying that searches for features due to non-adiabatic evolution are best focussed first on the latter.

Perturbations in Chromo-Natural Inflation

Chromo-Natural Inflation is the first worked example of a model of inflation in which slow-roll inflation is achieved by "magnetic drift" as opposed to Hubble friction. In this work, we give an account of the perturbations at linear order in this model. Our analysis uncovers two novel phenomena. First, the amplitude of scalar curvature perturbations is not directly tied to the shape of the inflationary potential. This allows the theory to violate naïve formulations of the Lyth bound. Second, the tensor sector of the theory is significantly altered from the usual case: the non-Abelian gauge field perturbations have a tensor degree of freedom. One chirality of the this tensor can be exponentially enhanced by a temporary instability near horizon crossing; this chiral instability exists because of the classical gauge field background, which violates parity. These tensor fluctuations of the gauge field also couple to gravitational waves at linear order in perturbation theory and source a chiral spectrum of gravitational waves. This spectrum can be exponentially enhanced over the usual inflationary spectrum due to the instability in the gauge sector. These new features cause the theory in its present form to be in significant tension with current observational data. This is because the new scalar physics leads to a significant reddening of the spectral tilt in the same region of parameter space where the exponential enhancement of the gravitational wave amplitude is small enough to satisfy current constraints on the tensor-to-scalar index. Hence, the model either predicts a spectral tilt that is too red, or it overproduces gravitational waves, or both.

Gauge Fields and Inflation: Chiral Gravitational Waves, Fluctuations and the Lyth Bound

Models of inflation involving non-Abelian gauge field backgrounds can produce gravitational waves at an observable level with a preferred handedness. This asymmetry comes about because the non-Abelian background generates parity-violation in the action for perturbations. In the specific model we study, Chromo-Natural Inflation, these gravitational waves can be produced at observable levels even when no field makes a super-Planckian field excursion, thus evading a common formulation of the Lyth bound. Unfortunately, when considered in concert with the scalar fluctuations, this chiral enhancement of the gravitational waves makes the model observationally inviable.
