Rate Distortion Theorem and the Multicritical Point of Spin Glass

A spin system can be thought of as an information coding system that transfers information of the interaction configuration into information of the equilibrium state of the spin variables. Hence it can be expected that the relations between the interaction configuration and equilibrium states are consistent with the known laws of information theory. We show that Shannon's rate-distortion theorem can be used to obtain an universal constraint on neighboring spin correlations for a broad range of Ising spin systems with two-body spin interactions. Remarkably, this constraint gives a bound for the multicritical point in the phase diagram, when a mean-field behavior for the neighboring spin pairs can be expected in the paramagnetic phase.

Estimating dynamic mechanical quantities and their associated uncertainties: application guidance

Recently several European National Measurement Institutes have established traceable calibration methods for dynamic mechanical quantities, e.g., dynamic force, torque and pressure. However, the use in industry and elsewhere of dynamic calibration information provided on certificates is not straightforward. Typically it is necessary to employ deconvolution techniques to obtain estimates of measurands, and the deconvolution method itself and the associated algorithms are sources of uncertainty that must be included in uncertainty budgets. There is a need for practical guidance for end users on how to use the newly-available dynamic calibration information. To this end we set out an approach to the evaluation of uncertainties associated with dynamic measurements that we believe covers the most relevant cases. The methods have been embodied in publicly-available software and we show how they can be used to tackle some example problems. We believe that the methods lead to more reliable estimates of the relevant measurands and their associated uncertainties.

Chaotic laser based physical random bit streaming system with a computer application interface

We demonstrate a random bit streaming system that uses a chaotic laser as its physical entropy source. By performing real-time bit manipulation for bias reduction, we were able to provide the memory of a personal computer with a constant supply of ready-to-use physical random bits at a throughput of up to 4 Gbps. We pay special attention to the end-to-end entropy source model describing how the entropy from physical sources is converted into bit entropy. We confirmed the statistical quality of the generated random bits by revealing the pass rate of the NIST SP800-22 test suite to be 65 % to 75 %, which is commonly considered acceptable for a reliable random bit generator. We also confirmed the stable operation of our random bit steaming system with long-term bias monitoring.

A Large Deviations Result for Aggregation of Independent Noisy Observations

Sensing and aggregation of noisy observations should not be considered as separate issues. The quality of collective estimation involves a difficult tradeoff between sensing quality which increases by increasing the number of sensors, and aggregation quality which typically decreases if the number of sensors is too large. We examine a strategy for optimal aggregation for an ensemble of independent sensors with constrained system capacity. We show that in the large capacity limit larger scale aggregation always outperforms smaller scale aggregation at higher noise levels, while below a critical value of noise, there exist moderate scale aggregation levels at which optimal estimation is realized.

Universal Behavior in Large-scale Aggregation of Independent Noisy Observations

Aggregation of noisy observations involves a difficult tradeoff between observation quality, which can be increased by increasing the number of observations, and aggregation quality which decreases if the number of observations is too large. We clarify this behavior for a protypical system in which arbitrarily large numbers of observations exceeding the system capacity can be aggregated using lossy data compression. We show the existence of a scaling relation between the collective error and the system capacity, and show that large scale lossy aggregation can outperform lossless aggregation above a critical level of observation noise. Further, we show that universal results for scaling and critical value of noise which are independent of system capacity can be obtained by considering asymptotic behavior when the system capacity increases toward infinity.

Nonresonant entrainment of detuned oscillators induced by common external noise

We have found that a novel type of entrainment occurs in two nonidentical limit cycle oscillators subjected to a common external white Gaussian noise. This entrainment is anomalous in the sense that the two oscillators have different mean frequencies, where the difference is constant as the noise intensity increases, but their phases come to be locked for almost all the time. We present a theory and numerical evidence for this phenomenon.

Consistency in the driven butterfly

We study the consistency of the responses in the chaotic Lorenz model driven by chaotic and colored-noise signals. A measure is introduced for the consistency of the response in the system for repeated applications of the same drive signal, starting at different initial conditions of the response system. The convergence of responses is analyzed in dynamical phase space in terms of the local conditional Lyapunov exponent. The dependence of the local conditional Lyapunov exponent on drive signal, and the existence of multiple basins of consistency depending on strength of drive signal, are shown.
