Femtosecond LIPSS on indium-tin-oxide thin films at IR wavelengths

We investigated laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) generated on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin films with femtosecond laser pulses in the infrared region. Using pulses between 1.6 and 2.4 ${\mu}$m central wavelength, we observed robust LIPSS morphologies with a periodicity close to ${\lambda}$/10. Supporting finite-difference time-domain calculations suggest that the surface forms are rooted in the field localization in the surface pits leading to a periodically increased absorption of the laser pulse energy that creates the observed periodic structures.

Advances in high-order harmonic generation sources for time-resolved investigations

We review the main research directions ongoing in the development of high-harmonic generation-based extreme ultraviolet sources for the synthesization and application of trains and isolated attosecond pulses to time-resolved spectroscopy. A few experimental and theoretical works will be discussed in connection to well-established attosecond techniques. In this context, we present the unique possibilities offered for time-resolved investigations on the attosecond timescale by the new Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source, which is currently under construction.

Correlations between the final momenta of electrons and their initial phase-space distribution in the process of tunnel ionization

We present both full quantum mechanical and semiclassical calculations of above threshold ionization (ATI) of a hydrogen atom in the tunneling regime by a few-cycle linearly polarized infrared laser pulse. As a quantum treatment, we applied the direct integration of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). In the semiclassical approximation (SCA), it is assumed that wavepacket propagation in the post-tunneling process can be well described within the classical framework. With these two methods, we analyze the similarities and deviations for ionization of the hydrogen atom. We found that the 3 dimensional semiclassical method can describe reasonably well the momentum correlation pattern of the ATI peaks. We also show good agreement between the results obtained by TDSE method and the semi-classical method. Furthermore, with the semiclassical approximation we clearly identify and separate the regions in momentum distributions of the ejected electrons according to initial conditions. We illustrate the corresponding regions with typical electron trajectories.

Atomic coherence effects in few-cycle pulse induced ionization

The interaction of a short, few-cycle light pulse and an atom which is prepared initially in a superposition of two stationary states is shown to exhibit strong signatures of atomic coherence. For a given waveform of the laser pulse, appropriate quantum mechanical relative phase between the constituents of the initial superposition can increase the ionization probability by a factor of three. A similarly strong effect can be observed when the waveform of the ionizing pulse is changed. These results allow for intuitive explanations, which are in agreement with the numerical integration of the time dependent Schrödinger equation.

Nanoscale optical waveform control of strong-field photoemission

Strong-field photoemission from metal nanostructures enabled fundamental discoveries recently. Here, we deliver theoretical demonstration of the electric field control of electrons in the closest nanoscale vicinity of plasmonic nanoparticles with the help of few-cycle laser waveforms. We analyze the effect of plasmonic resonance on photoemission properties and show that it is only off-resonant nanoparticles that can provide electron control on a true sub-fs timescale.

Single attosecond pulse from terahertz-assisted high-order harmonic generation

High-order harmonic generation by few-cycle 800 nm laser pulses in neon gas in the presence of a strong terahertz (THz) field is investigated numerically with propagation effects taken into account. Our calculations show that the combination of THz fields with up to 12 fs laser pulses can be an effective gating technique to generate single attosecond pulses. We show that in the presence of the strong THz field only a single attosecond burst can be phase matched, whereas radiation emitted during other half-cycles disappears during propagation. The cutoff is extended and a wide supercontinuum appears in the near-field spectra, extending the available spectral width for isolated attosecond pulse generation from 23 to 93 eV. We demonstrate that phase matching effects are responsible for the generation of isolated attosecond pulses, even in conditions when single atom response yields an attosecond pulse train.

Spontaneous emission of radiation by metallic electrons in the presence of electromagnetic fields of surface plasmon oscillations

The spontaneous emission of radiation of metallic electrons embedded in a high-intensity enhanced surface plasmon field is considered analytically. The electrons are described by exact dressed quantum states which contain the interaction with the plasmon field non-perturbatively. Considerable deviations from the pertubative behaviour have been found in the intensity dependence of the emitted fundamental and the second harmonic signals, even at moderate incoming laser intensities. The theoretical predictions deduced from the formalism are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results.
