Projection on Segre varieties and determination of holomorphic mappings between real submanifolds

It is shown that a germ of a holomorphic mapping sending a real-analytic generic submanifold of finite type into another is determined by its projection on the Segre variety of the target manifold. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for a germ of a mapping into the Segre variety of the target manifold to be the projection of a holomorphic mapping sending the source manifold into the target. An application to the biholomorphic equivalence problem is also given.

Analyticity of smooth CR mappings of generic submanifolds

We consider a smooth CR mapping $f$ from a real-analytic generic submanifold $M$ in $\bC^N$ into $\bC^N$. For $M$ of finite type and essentially finite at a point $p\in M$, and $f$ formally finite at $p$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $f$ to extend as a holomorphic mapping in some neighborhood of $p$. In a similar vein, we consider a formal holomorphic mapping $H$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition for $H$ to be convergent.

Images of real submanifolds under finite holomorphic mappings

We give some results concerning the smoothness of the image of a real-analytic submanifold in complex space under the action of a finite holomorphic mapping. For instance, if the submanifold is not contained in a proper complex subvariety, we give a necessary and sufficient condition guaranteeing that its image is smooth and the mapping is transversal to the image.

Finite jet determination of CR embeddings

We prove finite jet determination results for smooth CR embeddings which are of constant degeneracy, using the method of complete systems. As an application, we derive a reflection principle for mappings between a Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface in C^N and a Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface in C^{N+1}. We also give an independent proof of the reflection principle for mappings between strictly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces in any codimension due to Forstneric.

Rigidity of CR-immersions into spheres

We consider local CR-immersions of a strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurface $M\subset\bC^{n+1}$, near a point $p\in M$, into the unit sphere $\mathbb S\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$ with $d>0$. Our main result is that if there is such an immersion $f\colon (M,p)\to \mathbb S$ and $d < n/2$, then $f$ is {\em rigid} in the sense that any other immersion of $(M,p)$ into $\mathbb S$ is of the form $ϕ\circ f$, where $ϕ$ is a biholomorphic automorphism of the unit ball $\mathbb B\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$. As an application of this result, we show that an isolated singularity of an irreducible analytic variety of codimension $d$ in $\bC^{n+d+1}$ is uniquely determined up to affine linear transformations by the local CR geometry at a point of its Milnor link.

Finite jet determination of holomorphic mappings at the boundary

Let M,M' be smooth real hypersurfaces in N-dimensional space and assume that M is k-nondegenerate at a point p in M. We prove that holomorphic mappings that extend smoothly to M, sending a neighborhood of p in M diffeomorphically into M' are completely determined by their 2k-jet at p. As an application of this result, we also give sufficient conditions on a smooth real hypersurface which guarantee that the space of infinitesimal CR automorphisms is finite dimensional.

On the analyticity of CR mappings between nonminimal hypersurfaces

Let M be a connected real-analytic hypersurface in two dimensional complex space, $\mathbb C^2$, containing a connected complex hypersurface E, and let f be a smooth CR mapping sending M into another real-analytic hypersurface M' in $\mathbb C^2$. In this paper, we prove that if f does not collapse E to a point and does not collapse M into the image of E, and if the Levi form of M vanishes to first order along E, then f is real-analytic in a neighborhood of E. In general, the corresponding statement is false if the Levi form of M vanishes to second order or higher, in view of an example due to the author. We also show analogous results in higher dimensions provided that the target M' satisfies a certain nondegeneracy condition. The main ingredient in the proof, which seems to be of independent interest, is the prolongation of the system defining a CR mapping sending M into M' to a Pfaffian system on M with singularities along E. The nature of the singularity is described by the order of vanishing of the Levi form along E.

Uniformly Levi degenerate CR manifolds; the 5 dimensional case

In this paper, we consider real hypersurfaces $M$ in $\Bbb C^3$ (or more generally, 5-dimensional CR manifolds of hypersurface type) at uniformly Levi degenerate points, i.e. Levi degenerate points such that the rank of the Levi form is constant in a neighborhood. We also require the hypersurface to satisfy a certain second order nondegeneracy condition (called 2-nondegeneracy) at the point. Our first result is the construction of a principal bundle $P\to M$ with an absolute parallelism, uniquely determined by the CR structure on $M$, which reduces the question of whether two such CR manifolds $M$ and $M'$ are CR equivalent to the corresponding equivalence problem for the parallelized bundles $P$ and $P'$. A basic example of a hypersurface of the type under consideration is the tube $Γ_\bC$ over the light cone. Our second result is the characterization of $Γ_\bC$ by vanishing curvature conditions in the spirit of the characterization of the unit sphere as the flat model for strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ in terms of the Cartan-Chern-Moser connection.

New invariant tensors in CR structures and a normal form for real hypersurfaces at a generic Levi degeneracy

We introduce new invariant tensors in CR structures which can be viewed as higher order Levi forms. Using the second and third order tensors, we give a complete formal normal form (in the sense of Chern-Moser) for a real hypersurface at a generic Levi degeneracy. (We say that M has a generic Levi degeneracy at p if the Levi determinant vanishes at p but its differential does not, and the set of Levi degenerate points of M is transverse to the Levi null space at p.) By applying a convergence theorem for formal mappings due to the author, Baouendi, and Rothschild, we conclude that the above mentioned formal normal form provides a complete set of biholomorphic invariants for real-analytic hypersurfaces at generic Levi degeneracies.

Normal forms and biholomorphic equivalence of real hypersurfaces in C^3

We consider the problem of describing the local biholomorphic equivalence class of a real-analytic hypersurface $M$ at a distinguished point $p_0\in M$ by giving a normal form for such objects. In order for the normal form to carry useful information about the biholomorphic equivalence class, we shall require that the transformation to normal form is unique modulo some finite dimensional group. A classical result due to Chern--Moser gives such a normal form for Levi nondegenerate hypersurfaces. The main results in this paper concern real-analytic hypersurfaces $M$ in $\Bbb C^3$ at certain Levi degenerate points $p_0\in M$, namely points at which $M$ is 2-nondegenerate. We give a partial normal form for all such $(M,p_0)$, i.e. a normal form for the data associated with 2-nondegeneracy. We also give a complete formal normal form for such $(M,p_0)$ under the additional condition that the Levi form has rank one at $p_0$. This result, combined with a recent theorem due to the author, M. S. Baouendi, and L. P. Rothschild stating that formal equivalences between real-analytic finitely nondegenerate hypersurfaces converge, gives a description of the biholomorphic equivalence class of a real-analytic hypersurface in $\Bbb C^3$ at a point of 2-nondegeneracy where the rank of the Levi form is one.
