Unraveling the Unexpected Seasonal Variation of Multi-Muon Events at NO$\nu$A

The seasonal variation of single muons is a well-understood phenomenon, mainly driven by a positive correlation with temperature fluctuations in the atmospheric profiles. However, the rate of multi-muon events recorded by various experiments has shown an intriguing opposite seasonal modulation that remains unexplained by previous research. For the first time, we quantitatively describe the phase and amplitudes of the seasonal variation for cosmic multi-muon events detected by the NO$\nu$A Near Detector. We can further explain the amplitude dependence for multi-muon events across various multiplicities. For our analysis, we use the general-purpose Monte Carlo code FLUKA-CERN 4.4.1, which provides a more realistic description of the detector, atmospheric profiles, and muon propagation underground. Finally, we compare our results with those obtained from the latest CORSIKA version 7.8010, utilizing the most up-to-date high-energy hadronic interaction models EPOS LHC-R and QGSJETIII-01. Our findings provide a fresh perspective on seasonal muon flux modulation and offer key constraints for cosmic-ray interaction models and underground detector studies.

Magnetic Polarizability of Virtual (ss') and (cc') Pairs in the Nucleon

We suggest 3P0 quantum state of virtual (ss') pairs in the nucleon can be polarised by the internal fields permeating the volume of the nucleon (proton or neutron). Due to the quadratic Zeeman interaction, 3P0 wavefunction of virtual (qq') pairs acquires the admixture of 1P10 quantum state in the magnetic field, which generates the antiparallel polarization of s and s' quarks (in the nucleon). Considering the internal magnetic fields of neutron and proton (originating from their measured magnetic dipole moments), we suggest the induced s-quark polarization in the neutron to be of the oposite direction compared to the proton case. We mention the influence of the internal chromo-magnetic fields on the quantum state of (qq') pairs in the nucleon and we discuss also the expected behaviour of virtual (cc') pairs.

Decay of Resonaces in Strong Magnetic Field

We suggest that decay properties (branching ratios) of hadronic resonances may become modified in strong external magnetic field. The behavior of $K^{\pm *}\!$, $K^{0*}$ vector mesons as well as $\Lambda^*(1520)$ and $\Xi^{0*}$ baryonic states is considered in static fields $10^{13}$-\,$10^{15}$ T. In particular, $n=0$ Landau level energy increase of charged particles in the external magnetic field, and the interaction of hadron magnetic moments with the field is taken into account. We suggest that enhanced yield of dileptons and photons from $\rho^0(770)$ mesons may occur if strong decay channel $\rho^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ is significantly suppressed. CP - violating $\pi^+\pi^-$ decays of pseudoscalar $\eta_c$ and $\eta(547)$ mesons in the magnetic field are discussed, and superpositions of quarkonium states $\eta_{c,b}$ and $\chi_{c,b}(nP)$ with $\Psi(nS), \Upsilon(nS)$ mesons in the external field are considered.

Magnetic Polarizability of Diquarks in Baryons

We study the response of diquark wave function in \Lambda-type baryons to strong magnetic fields. It is found that quantum state of J=0 diquark (ud) in the magnetic field changes due to magnetic polarizability, and constituent quarks in (ud) diquark become polarized. The phenomenon influences polarized quark distribution functions \Delta u(x) and \Delta d(x), which therefore may be sensitive to the internal electromagnetic fields in hypernuclei. We also speculate, that strange quark polarization in nucleon may originate from the interaction of virtual (ss') quark pairs with the intrinsic magnetic field of nucleon B $\approx$ 10^13 T.

Can Eta mesons have a magnetic moment ?

The response of pseudoscalar and vector mesons to strong magnetic fields is studied within a simple constituent quark model using analogy with bound states of Positronium. Magnetic moments of charged vector mesons K*, D*, B* are predicted and it is found that Eta mesons have magnetic polarizability. In extremely strong magnetic fields, behaviour of J/Psi mesons is discussed. We speculate on the existence of an induced magnetic moment of Eta meson.

Elliptic Flow in Collisions of Deformed Nuclei

Initial eccentricity of the interacting volume of QCD matter created in collisions of prolate and oblate nuclei is studied using optical Glauber simulation. Collisions of prolate 165-Ho + 165-Ho nuclei and Au+Au nuclei are investigated (assuming oblate ground-state deformation for 197-Au nucleus). Qualitative predictions are obtained for RHIC energies.

On Fixed-multiplicity Corrections to Correlators

Correction terms generated in the correlator analysis due to multiplicity-dependent observable mean are investigated. A procedure for subtraction of such terms from calculated correlator estimates is suggested and the obtained results are discussed.

Elliptic Flow in Central Collisions of Deformed Nuclei

Non-trivial geometrical effects in relativistic central collisions of deformed nuclei are studied using a simple version of optical Glauber model. For very small impact parameters large centrality and eccentricity fluctuations are observed. In very high multiplicity collisions of oblate nuclei (e.g. Au and Cu) significant fraction of events with elliptic flow strength v_2 dependent on oblateness beta_2 is predicted.

Phi Mesons from a Hadronic Fireball

Production of $ϕ$ mesons is considered in the course of heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies. We investigate the possible difference in momentum distributions of $ϕ$ mesons measured via their leptonic ($μ^+μ^-$) and hadronic ($K^+K^-$) decays. Rescattering of secondary kaons in the dense hadron gas together with the influence of in-medium kaon potential can lead to a relative decrease of a $ϕ$ yield observed in the hadronic channel. We analyze how the in-medium modifications of meson properties affect apparent - reconstructed momentum distributions of $ϕ$ mesons. Quantitative results are presented for central Pb+Pb collisions at $E_{beam}=158 GeV/A$.

Jupiter Effect (Asymmetrical Production of Dilepton Pairs)

Specific results of the computer simulation of dilepton production from expanding pion gas created in Pb+Pb 160 GeV/n collisions are presented. Azimuthal asymmetry of dilepton pairs in non-central collisions and interesting shape of the rapidity distribution of dilepton pairs are predicted. These results are understood on theoretical level as a consequence of momentum and space asymmetries in the initial state of pion gas without any assumption of thermalization. Implication on the production of dileptons in pre-hadronic phase of HIC is drawn.

Anisotropy as a Consequence of Pre-equilibrium Rescattering

It is shown that azimuthal asymmetry in transverse momentum distribution of particles observed in non-central heavy ion collisions can originate from pre-equilibrium rescattering. The phenomenon is studied using computer simulation of expanding pion gas created in Pb+Pb 160 GeV/n collisions. Results obtained are discussed in comparison with experimental results of NA49 collaboration. Theoretical understanding of mechanism generating the asymmetry is presented. Conclusion about non-equilibrium properties of the phenomenon studied is drawn.

Asymmetrical and Non-equilibrium Expansion of Pion Gas Created in HIC

Results of the computer simulation of dilepton production from the expanding pion gas created in ultrarelativistic Pb+Pb 160 GeV/n collisions are presented. Finite size of the expanding pion gas influences invariant mass spectrum of dileptons. Sensitivity of the shape of dilepton mass spectrum to the initial stage of the pion gas is discussed. Second order asymmetry in azimuthal distribution of dileptons is predicted for non-central collisions. Non-equilibrium nature of the pion gas expansion is found to exhibit itself in rapidity distribution of produced dilepton pairs.

Hadron Formation Time and Dilepton Mass Spectra in Heavy Ion Collisions

We point out that formation time of pions produced in heavy ion collisions modifies the mass spectrum of dileptons produced via pipi -> ee annihilation. Increasing formation time enhances the production of dileptons with lower masses. The effect offers an explanation of a part of the enhanced production of dileptons below the rho-meson mass as observed by the CERES and HELIOS Collaborations at the CERN SPS.

Azimuthally Sensitive HBT Analysis

In the paper we investigate a possibility to perform shape-sensitive HBT analysis in transversal plane. We study presently used Side-Out decomposition of the correlation function and we do not find it to be very sensitive for the detection of a shape of source distribution in transversal plane. Therefore we suggest to use X-Y decomposition of the correlation function for the HBT analysis. We test the method suggested on artificial and non-central Pb-Pb 158GeV/n events produced by CASCUS generator. Further possible enhancement of the method is sketched.

Transversal Flow of Pions as a Consequence of Rescattering Process in non-central Pb+Pb 158GeV/n heavy ion collisions

Aim of this work was to test the idea of J.-Y.Ollitrault about the parallel squeeze-out type of transversal flow in mid-rapidity region. For this purpose we have performed a computer simulation of the expanding pion gas created in non-central Pb-Pb 158GeV/n collisions. A squeeze-out type of asymmetry parallel to impact parameter in azimuthal distribution of pions is found and studied. The asymmetry is explained as a consequence of geometry of non-central collisions and the rescattering process.

The Structure of a Source from Interferometry Measurements in Heavy Ion Collisions

Some experimental results of correlation functions in Bose-Einstein interferometry measurements exhibit a non smooth behaviour - oscillations. Possible origin of such a behaviour in non-trivial spatial distribution of the source is considered. A method for obtaining additional information about the structure of source emitting identical particles is suggested. It is shown that this information could be extracted by a one dimensional fourier analysis of the filtered correlation function. Further possible enhancement of the method is sketched. Some technical aspects of the proposed technique are discussed.
