David Olive: his life and work

David Olive, who died in Barton, Cambridgeshire, on 7 November 2012, aged 75, was a theoretical physicist who made seminal contributions to the development of string theory and to our understanding of the structure of quantum field theory. In early work on $S$-matrix theory, he helped to provide the conceptual framework within which string theory was initially formulated. His work, with Gliozzi and Scherk, on supersymmetry in string theory made possible the whole idea of superstrings, now understood as the natural framework for string theory. Olive's pioneering insights about the duality between electric and magnetic objects in gauge theories were way ahead of their time; it took two decades before his bold and courageous duality conjectures began to be understood. Although somewhat quiet and reserved, he took delight in the company of others, generously sharing his emerging understanding of new ideas with students and colleagues. He was widely influential, not only through the depth and vision of his original work, but also because the clarity, simplicity and elegance of his expositions of new and difficult ideas and theories provided routes into emerging areas of research, both for students and for the theoretical physics community more generally.

Off-Shell CHY Amplitudes and Feynman Graphs

A polynomial form is established for the off-shell CHY scattering equations proposed by Lam and Yao. Re-expressing this in terms of independent Mandelstam invariants provides a new expression for the polynomial scattering equations, immediately valid off shell, which makes it evident that they yield the off-shell amplitudes given by massless $\phi^3$ Feynman graphs. A CHY expression for individual Feynman graphs, valid even off shell, is established through a recurrence relation.

General Solution of the Scattering Equations

The scattering equations, originally introduced by Fairlie and Roberts in 1972 and more recently shown by Cachazo, He and Yuan to provide a kinematic basis for describing tree amplitudes for massless particles in arbitrary space-time dimension, have been reformulated in polynomial form. The scattering equations for N particles are equivalent to N-3 polynomial equations h_m=0, m=1,...,N-3, in N-3 variables, where h_m has degree m and is linear in the individual variables. Facilitated by this linearity, elimination theory is used to construct a single variable polynomial equation of degree (N-3)! determining the solutions. Δ_N is the sparse resultant of the system of polynomial scattering equations and it can be identified as the hyperdeterminant of a multidimensional matrix of border format within the terminology of Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Macaulay's Unmixedness Theorem is used to show that the polynomials of the scattering equations constitute a regular sequence, enabling the Hilbert series of the variety determined by the scattering equations to be calculated, independently showing that they have (N-3)! solutions.

The Polynomial Form of the Scattering Equations

The scattering equations, recently proposed by Cachazo, He and Yuan as providing a kinematic basis for describing tree amplitudes for massless particles in arbitrary space-time dimension (including scalars, gauge bosons and gravitons), are reformulated in polynomial form. The scattering equations for $N$ particles are shown to be equivalent to a Moebius invariant system of $N-3$ equations, $\tilde h_m=0$, $2 \leq m \leq N-2$, in $N$ variables, where $\tilde h_m$ is a homogeneous polynomial of degree m, with the exceptional property of being linear in each variable taken separately. Fixing the Moebius invariance appropriately, yields polynomial equations $h_m=0$, $1 \leq m \leq N-3$, in $N-3$ variables, where $h_m$ has degree $m$. The linearity of the equations in the individual variables facilitates computation, e.g the elimination of variables to obtain single variable equations determining the solutions. Expressions are given for the tree amplitudes in terms of the $\tilde h_m$ and $h_m$. The extension to the massive case for scalar particles is described and the special case of four dimensional space-time is discussed.

Proof of the Formula of Cachazo, He and Yuan for Yang-Mills Tree Amplitudes in Arbitrary Dimension

A proof is given of the formula, recently proposed by Cachazo, He and Yuan (CHY) for gluon tree amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory in arbitrary dimension. The approach is to first establish the corresponding result for massless $ϕ^3$ theory using the BCFW recurrence relation and then to extend this to the gauge theory case. Additionally, it is shown that the scattering equations introduced by CHY can be generalized to massive particles, enabling the description of tree amplitudes for massive $ϕ^3$ theory.

Complete Equivalence Between Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Twistor String Theory and in Gauge Theory

The gluon tree amplitudes of open twistor string theory, defined as contour integrals over the ACCK link variables, are shown to satisfy the BCFW relations, thus confirming that they coincide with the corresponding amplitudes in gauge field theory. In this approach, the integration contours are specified as encircling the zeros of certain constraint functions that force the appropriate relation between the link variables and the twistor string world-sheet variables. To do this, methods for calculating the tree amplitudes using link variables are developed further including diagrammatic methods for organizing and performing the calculations.

General Split Helicity Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We evaluate all split helicity gluon tree amplitudes in open twistor string theory. We show that these amplitudes satisfy the BCFW recurrence relations restricted to the split helicity case and, hence, that these amplitudes agree with those of gauge theory. To do this we make a particular choice of the sextic constraints in the link variables that determine the poles contributing to the contour integral expression for the amplitudes. Using the residue theorem to re-express this integral in terms of contributions from poles at rational values of the link variables, which we determine, we evaluate the amplitudes explicitly, regaining the gauge theory results of Britto et al.

Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We show how the link variables of Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan (ACCK), can be used to compute general gluon tree amplitudes in the twistor string. They arise from instanton sectors labelled by d, with d=n-1, where n is the number of negative helicities. Read backwards, this shows how the various forms for the tree amplitudes studied by ACCK can be grouped into contour integrals whose structure implies the existence of an underlying string theory.

From Dual Models to String Theory

A personal view is given of the development of string theory out of dual models, including the analysis of the structure of the physical states and the proof of the No-Ghost Theorem, the quantization of the relativistic string, and the calculation of fermion-fermion scattering.

Current Algebra on the Torus

We derive the N-point one-loop correlation functions for the currents of an arbitrary affine Kac-Moody algebra. The one-loop amplitudes, which are elliptic functions defined on the torus Riemann surface, are specified by group invariant tensors and certain constant tau-dependent functions. We compute the elliptic functions via a generating function, and explicitly construct the invariant tensor functions recursively in terms of Young tableaux. The lowest tensors are related to the character formula of the representation of the affine algebra. These general current algebra loop amplitudes provide a building block for open twistor string theory, among other applications.

Tree and Loop Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We compute the one-loop gluon amplitude for the open twistor string model of Berkovits, using a symmetric form of the vertex operators. We discuss the classical solutions in various topologies and instanton sectors and the canonical quantization of the world sheet Lagrangian. We derive the N-point functions for the gluon tree and one-loop amplitudes, and calculate a general one-loop expression for the current algebra.

Axiomatic Conformal Field Theory

A new rigorous approach to conformal field theory is presented. The basic objects are families of complex-valued amplitudes, which define a meromorphic conformal field theory (or chiral algebra) and which lead naturally to the definition of topological vector spaces, between which vertex operators act as continuous operators. In fact, in order to develop the theory, Möbius invariance rather than full conformal invariance is required but it is shown that every Möbius theory can be extended to a conformal theory by the construction of a Virasoro field. In this approach, a representation of a conformal field theory is naturally defined in terms of a family of amplitudes with appropriate analytic properties. It is shown that these amplitudes can also be derived from a suitable collection of states in the meromorphic theory. Zhu's algebra then appears naturally as the algebra of conditions which states defining highest weight representations must satisfy. The relationship of the representations of Zhu's algebra to the classification of highest weight representations is explained.

Quantisation of a particle moving on a group manifold

The Hilbert space of a free massless particle moving on a group manifold is studied in details using canonical quantisation. While the simplest model is invariant under a global symmetry, $G \times G$, there is a very natural way to ``factorise" the theory so that only one copy of the global symmetry is preserved. In the case of $G=SU(2)$, a simple deformation of the quantised theory is proposed to give a realisation of the quantum group, $U_t(SL(2))$. The symplectic structures of the corresponding classical theory is derived. This can be used, in principle, to obtain a Lagrangian formulation for the $U_t(SL(2))$ symmetry.
