Overdamped Deterministic Ratchets Driven By Multifrequency Forces

We investigate a dissipative, deterministic ratchet model in the overdamped regime driven by a {\it rectangular force}. Extensive numerical calculations are presented in a diagram depicting the drift velocity as a function of a wide range of the driving parameter values. We also present some theoretical considerations which explain some features of the mentioned diagram. In particular, we proof the existence of regions in the driving parameter space with bounded particle motion possessing zero current. Moreover, we present an explicit analytical expression for the drift velocity in the adiabatic limit.

Manifestation of Chaos in Real Complex Systems: Case of Parkinson's Disease

In this chapter we present a new approach to the study of manifestations of chaos in real complex system. Recently we have achieved the following result. In real complex systems the informational measure of chaotic chatacter (IMC) can serve as a reliable quantitative estimation of the state of a complex system and help to estimate the deviation of this state from its normal condition. As the IMC we suggest the statistical spectrum of the non-Markovity parameter (NMP) and its frequency behavior. Our preliminary studies of real complex systems in cardiology, neurophysiology and seismology have shown that the NMP has diverse frequency dependence. It testifies to the competition between Markovian and non-Markovian, random and regular processes and makes a crossover from one relaxation scenario to the other possible. On this basis we can formulate the new concept in the study of the manifestation of chaoticity. We suggest the statistical theory of discrete non-Markov stochastic processes to calculate the NMP and the quantitative evaluation of the IMC in real complex systems. With the help of the IMC we have found out the evident manifestation of chaosity in a normal (healthy) state of the studied system, its sharp reduction in the period of crises, catastrophes and various human diseases. It means that one can appreciably improve the state of a patient (of any system) by increasing the IMC of the studied live system. The given observation creates a reliable basis for predicting crises and catastrophes, as well as for diagnosing and treating various human diseases, Parkinson's disease in particular.

Age-related alterations of relaxation processes and non-Markov effects in stochastic dynamics of R-R intervals variability from human ECGs

In this paper we consider the age-related alterations of heart rate variability on the basis of the study of non-Markovian effects. The age dynamics of relaxation processes is quantitatively described by means of local relaxation parameters, calculated by the specific localization procedure. We offer a quantitative informational measure of non-Markovity to evaluate the change of statistical effects of memory. Local relaxation parameters for young and elderly people differ by 3.3 times, and quantitative measures of non-Markovity differ by 4.2 times. The comparison of quantitative parameters allows to draw conclusions about the reduction of relaxation rate with ageing and the higher degree of the Markovity of heart rate variability of elderly people.

Regular and stochastic behavior of Parkinsonian pathological tremor signals

Regular and stochastic behavior in the time series of Parkinsonian pathological tremor velocity is studied on the basis of the statistical theory of discrete non-Markov stochastic processes and flicker-noise spectroscopy. We have developed a new method of analyzing and diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) by taking into consideration discreteness, fluctuations, long- and short-range correlations, regular and stochastic behavior, Markov and non-Markov effects and dynamic alternation of relaxation modes in the initial time signals. The spectrum of the statistical non-Markovity parameter reflects Markovity and non-Markovity in the initial time series of tremor. The relaxation and kinetic parameters used in the method allow us to estimate the relaxation scales of diverse scenarios of the time signals produced by the patient in various dynamic states. The local time behavior of the initial time correlation function and the first point of the non-Markovity parameter give detailed information about the variation of pathological tremor in the local regions of the time series. The obtained results can be used to find the most effective method of reducing or suppressing pathological tremor in each individual case of a PD patient. Generally, the method allows one to assess the efficacy of the medical treatment for a group of PD patients.

Spin conversion rates due to dipolar interactions in mono-isotopic quantum dots at vanishing spin-orbit coupling

Dipolar interaction between the magnetic moments of electrons is studied as a source for electron spin decay in quantum dots or arrays of quantum dots. This magnetic interaction will govern spin decay, after other sources, such as the coupling to nuclear spins or spin orbit coupling, have been eliminated by a suitable sample design. Electron-electron (Coulomb) interactions, important for magnetic properties, are included. Decomposing the dipolar operator according to the symmetric group of electron permutations allows one to deduce vanishing decay channels as a function of electron number and spatial symmetries of the quantum dot(s). Moreover, we incorporate the possibility of rapid phonon induced spin conserving transitions which crucially affect the temperature dependence of spin decay rates. An interesting result is that a sharp increase of the spin decay rate occurs already at relatively low temperatures.

Transport suppression in heterostructures driven by an ac gate voltage

We explore the possibility of inducing in heterostructures driven by an ac gate voltage the coherent current suppression recently found for nanoscale conductors in oscillating fields. The destruction of current is fairly independent of the transport voltage, but can be controlled by the driving amplitude and frequency. Within a tight-binding approximation, we obtain analytical results for the average current in the presence of driving. These results are compared against an exact numerical treatment based on a transfer-matrix approach.

Quantum Brownian motion and the Third Law of thermodynamics

The quantum thermodynamic behavior of small systems is investigated in presence of finite quantum dissipation. We consider the archetype cases of a damped harmonic oscillator and a free quantum Brownian particle. A main finding is that quantum dissipation helps to ensure the validity of the Third Law. For the quantum oscillator, finite damping replaces the zero-coupling result of an exponential suppression of the specific heat at low temperatures by a power-law behavior. Rather intriguing is the behavior of the free quantum Brownian particle. In this case, quantum dissipation is able to restore the Third Law: Instead of being constant down to zero temperature, the specific heat now vanishes proportional to temperature with an amplitude that is inversely proportional to the ohmic dissipation strength. A distinct subtlety of finite quantum dissipation is the result that the various thermodynamic functions of the sub-system do not only depend on the dissipation strength but depend as well on the prescription employed in their definition.

Escape rates in periodically driven Markov processes

We present an approximate analytical expression for the escape rate of time-dependent driven stochastic processes with an absorbing boundary such as the driven leaky integrate-and-fire model for neural spiking. The novel approximation is based on a discrete state Markovian modeling of the full long-time dynamics with time-dependent rates. It is valid in a wide parameter regime beyond the restraining limits of weak driving (linear response) and/or weak noise. The scheme is carefully tested and yields excellent agreement with three different numerical methods based on the Langevin equation, the Fokker-Planck equation and an integral equation.

Switching Time Statistics for Driven Neuron Models: Analytic Expressions versus Numerics

Analytical expressions are put forward to investigate the forced spiking activity of abstract neuron models such as the driven leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) model. The method is valid in a wide parameter regime beyond the restraining limits of weak driving (linear response) and/or weak noise. The novel approximation is based on a discrete state Markovian modeling of the full dynamics with time-dependent rates. The scheme yields very good agreement with numerical Langevin and Fokker-Planck simulations of the full non-stationary dynamics for both, the first-passage time statistics and the interspike interval (residence time) distributions.

Forcing inertial Brownian motors: efficiency and negative differential mobility

The noise-assisted, directed transport in a one-dimensional dissipative, inertial Brownian motor of the rocking type that is exposed to an external bias is investigated. We demonstrate that the velocity-load characteristics is distinctly non-monotonic, possessing regimes with a {\em negative differential mobility}. In addition, we evaluate several possible efficiency quantifiers which are compared among each other. These quantifiers characterize the mutual interplay between the viscous drag and the external load differently, weighing the inherent rectification features from different physical perspectives.

Chiral separation in microflows

Molecules that only differ by their chirality, so called enantiomers, often possess different properties with respect to their biological function. Therefore, the separation of enantiomers presents a prominent challenge in molecular biology and belongs to the ``Holy Grail'' of organic chemistry. We suggest a new separation technique for chiral molecules that is based on the transport properties in a microfluidic flow with spatially variable vorticity. Because of their size the thermal fluctuating motion of the molecules must be taken into account. These fluctuations play a decisive role in the proposed separation mechanism.

A simple measure of memory for dynamical processes described by the generalized Langevin equation

Memory effects are a key feature in the description of the dynamical systems governed by the generalized Langevin equation, which presents an exact reformulation of the equation of motion. A simple measure for the estimation of memory effects is introduced within the framework of this description. Numerical calculations of the suggested measure and the analysis of memory effects are also applied for various model physical systems as well as for the phenomena of ``long time tails'' and anomalous diffusion.

Nonadiabatic Electron Pumping: Maximal Current with Minimal Noise

The noise properties of pump currents through an open double quantum dot setup with non-adiabatic ac driving are investigated. Driving frequencies close to the internal resonances of the double dot-system mark the optimal working points at which the pump current assumes a maximum while its noise power possesses a remarkably low minimum. A rotating-wave approximation provides analytical expressions for the current and its noise power and allows to optimize the noise characteristics. The analytical results are compared to numerical results from a Floquet transport theory.

Improving the purity of one- and two-qubit gates by AC fields

We investigate the influence of AC driving fields on the coherence properties of one- and two-qubit gate operations. In both cases, we find that for suitable driving parameters, the gate purity improves significantly. A mapping of the time-dependent system-bath model to an effective static model provides analytical results. The resulting purity loss compares favorably with numerical results.

Anticipated synchronization in coupled inertia ratchets with time-delayed feedback: a numerical study

We investigate anticipated synchronization between two periodically driven deterministic, dissipative inertia ratchets that are able to exhibit directed transport with a finite velocity. The two ratchets interact through an unidirectional delay coupling: one is acting as a master system while the other one represents the slave system. Each of the two dissipative deterministic ratchets is driven externally by a common periodic force. The delay coupling involves two parameters: the coupling strength and the (positive-valued) delay time. We study the synchronization features for the unbounded, current carrying trajectories of the master and the slave, respectively, for four different strengths of the driving amplitude. These in turn characterize differing phase space dynamics of the transporting ratchet dynamics: regular, intermittent and a chaotic transport regime. We find that the slave ratchet can respond in exactly the same way as the master will respond in the future, thereby anticipating the nonlinear directed transport.

Universal Approach to Overcoming Nonstationarity, Unsteadiness and Non-Markovity of Stochastic Processes in Complex Systems

In present paper we suggest a new universal approach to study complex systems by microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic methods. We discuss new possibilities of extracting information on nonstationarity, unsteadiness and non-Markovity of discrete stochastic processes in complex systems. We consider statistical properties of the fast, intermediate and slow components of the investigated processes in complex systems within the framework of microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic approaches separately. Among them theoretical analysis is carried out by means of local noisy time-dependent parameters and the conception of a quasi-Brownian particle (QBP) (mesoscopic approach) as well as the use of wavelet transformation of the initial row time series. As a concrete example we examine the seismic time series data for strong and weak earthquakes in Turkey ($1998,1999$) in detail, as well as technogenic explosions. We propose a new way of possible solution to the problem of forecasting strong earthquakes forecasting. Besides we have found out that an unexpected restoration of the first two local noisy parameters in weak earthquakes and technogenic explosions is determined by exponential law. In this paper we have also carried out the comparison and have discussed the received time dependence of the local parameters for various seismic phenomena.

Relaxation time scales in collective dynamics of liquid alkali metals

In this paper the investigation of the dynamical processes of liquid alkali metals is executed by analyzing the time scales of relaxation processes in liquids. The obtained theoretical dynamic structure factor $S(k,ω)$ for the case of liquid lithium is found to be in excellent agreement with the recently received inelastic X-ray scattering data. The comparison and interrelation with other theories are given here. Finally, an important part of this paper is the confirmation of the scale uniformity of the dynamic processes in liquid alkali metals predicted by some previous molecular dynamic simulation studies.

Coherent charge transport through molecular wires: influence of strong Coulomb repulsion

We derive a master equation for the electron transport through molecular wires in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion. This approach is applied to two typical situations: First, we study transport through an open conduction channel for which we find that the current exhibits an ohmic-like behaviour. Second, we explore the transport properties of a bridged molecular wire, where the current decays exponentially as a function of the wire length. For both situations, we discuss the differences to the case of non-interacting electrons.
