Resonant laser excitation of molecular wires

We investigate the influence of external laser excitations on the average current through bridged molecules. For the computation of the current, we use a numerically very efficient formalism that is based on the Floquet solutions of the time-dependent molecule Hamiltonian. It is found that the current as a function of the laser frequency exhibits characteristic peaks originating from resonant excitations of electrons to bridge levels which are unoccupied in the absence of the radiation. The electrical current through the molecule can exhibit a drastic enhancement by several orders of magnitude.

Rectification of laser-induced electronic transport through molecules

We study the influence of laser radiation on the electron transport through a molecular wire weakly coupled to two leads. In the absence of a generalized parity symmetry, the molecule rectifies the laser induced current, resulting in directed electron transport without any applied voltage. We consider two generic ways of dynamical symmetry breaking: mixing of different harmonics of the laser field and molecules consisting of asymmetric groups. For the evaluation of the nonlinear current, a numerically efficient formalism is derived which is based upon the Floquet solutions of the driven molecule. This permits a treatment in the non-adiabatic regime and beyond linear response.

Decoherence in resonantly driven bistable systems

We study dissipative tunneling in a double well potential that is driven close to a resonance between the lowest tunnel doublet and a singlet. While the coherent dynamics can be described well within a three-level approximation, dissipative transitions to levels outside the singlet and the doublet may play a crucial role. Moreover, such transitions can enhance the entropy production significantly.

Laser controlled molecular switches and transistors

We investigate the possibility of optical current control through single molecules which are weakly coupled to leads. A master equation approach for the transport through a molecule is combined with a Floquet theory for the time-dependent molecule. This yields an efficient numerical approach to the evaluation of the current through time-dependent nano-structures in the presence of a finite external voltage. We propose tunable optical current switching in two- and three-terminal molecular electronic devices driven by properly adjusted laser fields, i.e. a novel class of molecular transistors.

Delocalization and Heisenberg's uncertainty relation

In the one-dimensional Anderson model the eigenstates are localized for arbitrarily small amounts of disorder. In contrast, the Harper model with its quasiperiodic potential shows a transition from extended to localized states. The difference between the two models becomes particularly apparent in phase space where Heisenberg's uncertainty relation imposes a finite resolution. Our analysis points to the relevance of the coupling between momentum eigenstates at weak potential strength for the delocalization of a quantum particle.

Brownian motion exhibiting absolute negative mobility

We consider a single Brownian particle in a spatially symmetric, periodic system far from thermal equilibrium. This setup can be readily realized experimentally. Upon application of an external static force F, the average particle velocity is negative for F>0 and positive for F<0 (absolute negative mobility).

Molecular Wires Acting as Coherent Quantum Ratchets

The effect of laser fields on the electron transport through a molecular wire being weakly coupled to two leads is investigated. The molecular wire acts as a coherent quantum ratchet if the molecule is composed of periodically arranged, asymmetric chemical groups. This setup presents a quantum rectifier with a finite dc-response in the absence of a static bias. The nonlinear current is evaluated in closed form within the Floquet basis of the isolated, driven wire. The current response reveals multiple current reversals together with a nonlinear dependence (reflecting avoided quasi-energy crossings) on both, the amplitude and the frequency of the laser field. The current saturates for long wires at a nonzero value, while it may change sign upon decreasing its length.

Ion channel gating: a first passage time analysis of the Kramers type

The opening rate of voltage-gated potassium ion channels exhibits a characteristic, knee-like turnover where the common exponential voltage-dependence changes suddenly into a linear one. An explanation of this puzzling crossover is put forward in terms of a stochastic first passage time analysis. The theory predicts that the exponential voltage-dependence correlates with the exponential distribution of closed residence times. This feature occurs at large negative voltages when the channel is predominantly closed. In contrast, the linear part of voltage-dependence emerges together with a non-exponential distribution of closed dwelling times with increasing voltage, yielding a large opening rate. Depending on the parameter set, the closed-time distribution displays a power law behavior which extends over several decades.

Possibility between earthquake and explosion seismogram differentiation by discrete stochastic non-Markov processes and local Hurst exponent analysis

The basic purpose of the paper is to draw the attention of researchers to new possibilities of differentiation of similar signals having different nature. One of examples of such kind of signals is presented by seismograms containing recordings of earthquakes (EQ's) and technogenic explosions (TE's). We propose here a discrete stochastic model for possible solution of a problem of strong EQ's forecasting and differentiation of TE's from the weak EQ's. Theoretical analysis is performed by two independent methods: with the use of statistical theory of discrete non-Markov stochastic processes (Phys. Rev. E62,6178 (2000)) and the local Hurst exponent. Time recordings of seismic signals of the first four dynamic orthogonal collective variables, six various plane of phase portrait of four dimensional phase space of orthogonal variables and the local Hurst exponent have been calculated for the dynamic analysis of the earth states. The approaches, permitting to obtain an algorithm of strong EQ's forecasting and to differentiate TE's from weak EQ's, have been developed.

Incoherent charge transport through molecular wires: interplay of Coulomb interaction and wire population

The influence of Coulomb interaction on the electron transport through molecular wires is studied in the regime of incoherent tunneling. In the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion, the current for spinless electrons is determined. It is shown that the voltage profile along the wire crucially influences the dependence of the current on the wire length. Upon inclusion of the spin degree of freedom one finds a blocking effect which depends both on the interaction strength and on the population of the wire. For finite Coulomb interaction, the temperature dependence of the blocking is studied and it is shown that several regimes with different blocking strength may exist.

From ballistic motion to localization: a phase space analysis

We introduce phase space concepts to describe quantum states in a disordered system. The merits of an inverse participation ratio defined on the basis of the Husimi function are demonstrated by a numerical study of the Anderson model in one, two, and three dimensions. Contrary to the inverse participation ratios in real and momentum space, the corresponding phase space quantity allows for a distinction between the ballistic, diffusive, and localized regimes on a unique footing and provides valuable insight into the structure of the eigenstates.

Decoherence and dissipation during a quantum XOR gate operation

The dynamics of a quantum XOR gate operation in a two-qubit system being coupled to a bath of quantum harmonic oscillators is investigated. Upon applying the numerical quasiadiabatic propagator path integral method, we obtain the numerically precise time-resolved evolution of this interacting two-qubit system in presence of time-dependent external fields without further approximations. We simulate the dissipative gate operation for characteristic experimental realizations of condensed matter qubits; namely, the flux and charge qubits realized in superconducting Josephson systems and qubits formed with semiconductor quantum dots. Moreover, we study systematically the quality of the XOR gate by determining the four characteristic gate quantifiers: fidelity, purity, the quantum degree, and the entanglement capability of the gate. Two different types of errors in the qubits have been modelled, i.e., bit-flip errors and phase errors. The dependence of the quality of the gate operation on the environmental temperature, on the friction strength stemming from the system-bath interaction, and on the strength of the interqubit coupling is systematically explored: Our main finding is that the four gate quantifiers depend only weakly on temperature, but are rather sensitive to the friction strength.

Iterative algorithm versus analytic solutions of the parametrically driven dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator

We consider the Brownian motion of a quantum mechanical particle in a one-dimensional parabolic potential with periodically modulated curvature under the influence of a thermal heat bath. Analytic expressions for the time-dependent position and momentum variances are compared with results of an iterative algorithm, the so-called quasiadiabatic propagator path integral algorithm (QUAPI). We obtain good agreement over an extended range of parameters for this spatially continuous quantum system. These findings indicate the reliability of the algorithm also in cases for which analytic results may not be available a priori.

Surmounting Oscillating Barriers: Path-integral approach for Weak Noise

We consider the thermally activated escape of an overdamped Brownian particle over a potential barrier in the presence of periodic driving. A time-dependent path-integral formalism is developed which allows us to derive asymptotically exact weak-noise expressions for both the instantaneous and the time-averaged escape rate. Our results comprise a conceptionally new, systematic treatment of the rate prefactor multiplying the exponentially leading Arrhenius factor. Moreover, an estimate for the deviations at finite noise-strengths is provided and a supersymmetry-type property of the time averaged escape rate is verified. For piecewise parabolic potentials, the rate-expression can be evaluated in closed analytical form, while in more general cases, as exemplified by a cubic potential, an action-integral remains to be minimized numerically. Our comparison with very accurate numerical results demonstrates an excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions over a wide range of driving strengths and driving frequencies.

Disordered Systems in Phase Space

As a function of the disorder strength in a mesoscopic system, the electron dynamics crosses over from the ballistic through the diffusive towards the localized regime. The ballistic and the localized situation correspond to integrable or regular behavior while diffusive conductors correspond to chaotic behavior. The chaotic or regular character of single wave functions can be inferred from phase space concepts like the Husimi distribution and the Wehrl entropy. These quantities provide useful information about the structure of states in disordered systems. We investigate the phase space structure of one dimensional (1d) and 2d disordered systems within the Anderson model. The Wehrl entropy of the eigenstates allows to detect the crossover between the ballistic, diffusive and localized regime.

Floquet-Markov description of the parametrically driven, dissipative harmonic quantum oscillator

Using the parametrically driven harmonic oscillator as a working example, we study two different Markovian approaches to the quantum dynamics of a periodically driven system with dissipation. In the simpler approach, the driving enters the master equation for the reduced density operator only in the Hamiltonian term. An improved master equation is achieved by treating the entire driven system within the Floquet formalism and coupling it to the reservoir as a whole. The different ensuing evolution equations are compared in various representations, particularly as Fokker-Planck equations for the Wigner function. On all levels of approximation, these evolution equations retain the periodicity of the driving, so that their solutions have Floquet form and represent eigenfunctions of a non-unitary propagator over a single period of the driving. We discuss asymptotic states in the long-time limit as well as the conservative and the high-temperature limits. Numerical results obtained within the different Markov approximations are compared with the exact path-integral solution. The application of the improved Floquet-Markov scheme becomes increasingly important when considering stronger driving and lower temperatures.

Voltage rectification by a SQUID ratchet

We argue that the phase across an asymmetric dc SQUID threaded by a magnetic flux can experience an effective ratchet (periodic and asymmetric) potential. Under an external ac current, a rocking ratchet mechanism operates whereby one sign of the time derivative of the phase is favored. We show that there exists a range of parameters in which a fixed sign (and, in a narrower range, even a fixed value) of the average voltage across the ring occurs, regardless of the sign of the external current dc component.
