On critical renormalization of complex polynomials

Holomorphic renormalization plays an important role in complex polynomial dynamics. We consider certain conditions guaranteeing that a polynomial which does not admit a polynomial-like connected Julia set still admits an invariant continuum on which it is topologically conjugate to a lower degree polynomial. This invariant continuum may contain extra critical points of the original polynomial that are not visible in the dynamical plane of the conjugate polynomial. Thus, we extend the notions of holomorphic renormalization and polynomial-like maps and describe a setup where new generalized versions of these notions are applicable and yield useful topological conjugacies.

Renewal theory for random walks on surface groups

We construct a renewal structure for random walks on surface groups. The renewal times are defined as times when the random walks enters a particular type of a cone and never leaves it again. As a consequence, the trajectory of the random walk can be expressed as an "aligned union" of i.i.d. trajectories between the renewal times. Once having established this renewal structure, we prove a central limit theorem for the distance to the origin under exponential moment conditions. Analyticity of the speed and of the asymptotic variance are natural consequences of our approach. Furthermore, our method applies to groups with infinitely many ends and therefore generalizes classic results on central limit theorems on free groups.

Examples of coarse expanding conformal maps

In previous work, a class of noninvertible topological dynamical systems $f: X \to X$ was introduced and studied; we called these {\em topologically coarse expanding conformal} systems. To such a system is naturally associated a preferred quasisymmetry (indeed, snowflake) class of metrics in which arbitrary iterates distort roundness and ratios of diameters by controlled amounts; we called this {\em metrically coarse expanding conformal}. In this note we extend the class of examples to several more familiar settings, give applications of our general methods, and discuss implications for the computation of conformal dimension.

Pinching Holomorphic Correspondences

For certain classes of holomorphic correspondences which are matings between Kleinian groups and polynomials, we prove the existence of pinching deformations, analogous to Maskit's deformations of Kleinian groups which pinch loxodromic elements to parabolic elements. We apply our results to establish the existence of matings between quadratic maps and the modular group, for a large class of quadratic maps, and of matings between the quadratic map $z\to z^2$ and circle-packing representations of the free product $C\_2*C\_3$ of cyclic groups of order 2 and 3.
