Two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate in a high-frequency driving field that directly couples the two modes

A two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate coupled by a high-frequency modulation field is found to display rich features. An effective stationary Hamiltonian approach reveals the emergence of additional degenerate eigenstates as well as new topological structures of the spectrum. Possible applications, such as the suppression of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling, are discussed. An interesting phenomenon, which we call "deterministic symmetry-breaking trapping" associated with separatrix crossing, is also found in an adiabatic process.

Microcanonical quantum fluctuation theorems

Previously derived expressions for the characteristic function of work performed on a quantum system by a classical external force are generalized to arbitrary initial states of the considered system and to Hamiltonians with degenerate spectra. In the particular case of microcanonical initial states explicit expressions for the characteristic function and the corresponding probability density of work are formulated. Their classical limit as well as their relations to the respective canonical expressions are discussed. A fluctuation theorem is derived that expresses the ratio of probabilities of work for a process and its time reversal to the ratio of densities of states of the microcanonical equilibrium systems with corresponding initial and final Hamiltonians. From this Crooks-type fluctuation theorem a relation between entropies of different systems can be derived which does not involve the time reversed process. This entropy-from-work theorem provides an experimentally accessible way to measure entropies.

Negative conductance in driven Josephson junctions

We investigate an optimal regime of negative-valued conductance, emerging in a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction, which is driven simultaneously by both, a time-periodic (ac) and a constant (dc) current. We analyze the current-voltage characteristics in the regime of absolute negative conductance. We additionally explore the stability of the negative response with respect to the ac-current frequency.

Fidelity and Entanglement of a Spatially Extended Linear Three-Qubit Register

We study decoherence of a three-qubit array coupled to substrate phonons. Assuming an initial three-qubit entangled state that would be decoherence-free for identical qubit positions, allows us to focus on non-Markovian effects of the inevitable spatial qubit separation. It turns out that the coherence is most affected when the qubits are regularly spaced. Moreover, we find that up to a constant scaling factor, two-qubit entanglement is not influenced by the presence f the third qubit, even though all qubits interact via the phonon field.

On the conundrum of deriving exact solutions from approximate master equations

We derive the exact time-evolution for a general quantum system under the influence of pure phase-noise and demonstrate that for a Gaussian initial state of the bath, the exact result can be obtained also within a perturbative time-local master equation approach already in second order of the system-bath coupling strength. We reveal that this equivalence holds if the initial state of the bath can be mapped to a Gaussian phase-space distribution function. Moreover, we discuss the relation to the standard Bloch-Redfield approach.

Dissipative Landau-Zener transitions of a qubit: bath-specific and universal behavior

We study Landau-Zener transitions in a qubit coupled to a bath at zero temperature. A general formula is derived that is applicable to models with a non-degenerate ground state. We calculate exact transition probabilities for a qubit coupled to either a bosonic or a spin bath. The nature of the baths and the qubit-bath coupling is reflected in the transition probabilities. For diagonal coupling, when the bath causes energy fluctuations of the diabatic qubit states but no transitions between them, the transition probability coincides with the standard LZ probability of an isolated qubit. This result is universal as it does not depend on the specific type of bath. For pure off-diagonal coupling, by contrast, the tunneling probability is sensitive to the coupling strength. We discuss the relevance of our results for experiments on molecular nanomagnets, in circuit QED, and for the fast-pulse readout of superconducting phase qubits.

Accumulating Particles at the Boundaries of a Laminar Flow

The accumulation of small particles is analyzed in stationary flows through channels of variable width at small Reynolds number. The combined influence of pressure, viscous drag and thermal fluctuations is described by means of a Fokker-Planck equation for the particle density. It is shown that in the limit of vanishing particle size a uniform particle distribution is always approached in the long time limit. For extended spherical particles, conditions are specified that lead to inhomogeneous densities and consequently to particle accumulation and depletion. Hereby the boundary conditions for the particle density play a decisive role: The centers of spherical particles must keep the minimal distance of their radius from the fluid boundaries. The normal components of the forces acting on the sphere then may assume finite values which are diffusively transported into the bulk of the fluid.

Incomplete pure dephasing of N-qubit entangled W states

We consider qubits in a linear arrangement coupled to a bosonic field which acts as a quantum heat bath and causes decoherence. By taking the spatial separation of the qubits explicitly into account, the reduced qubit dynamics acquires an additional non-Markovian element. We investigate the time evolution of an entangled many-qubit W state, which for vanishing qubit separation remains robust under pure dephasing. For finite separation, by contrast, the dynamics is no longer decoherence-free. On the other hand, spatial noise correlations may prevent a complete dephasing. While a standard Bloch-Redfield master equation fails to describe this behavior even qualitatively, we propose instead a widely applicable causal master equation. Here we employ it to identify and characterize decoherence-poor subspaces. Consequences for quantum error correction are discussed.

Fluctuation theorems: Work is not an observable

The characteristic function of the work performed by an external time-dependent force on a Hamiltonian quantum system is identified with the time-ordered correlation function of the exponentiated system's Hamiltonian. A similar expression is obtained for the averaged exponential work which is related to the free energy difference of equilibrium systems by the Jarzynski work theorem.

The Tasaki-Crooks quantum fluctuation theorem

Starting out from the recently established quantum correlation function expression of the characteristic function for the work performed by a force protocol on the system [cond-mat/0703213] the quantum version of the Crooks fluctuation theorem is shown to emerge almost immediately by the mere application of an inverse Fourier transformation.

Entanglement creation in circuit QED via Landau-Zener sweeps

A qubit may undergo Landau-Zener transitions due to its coupling to one or several quantum harmonic oscillators. We show that for a qubit coupled to one oscillator, Landau-Zener transitions can be used for single-photon generation and for the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement, with state-of-the-art circuit QED as a promising realization. Moreover, for a qubit coupled to two cavities, we show that Landau-Zener sweeps of the qubit are well suited for the robust creation of entangled cavity states, in particular symmetric Bell states, with the qubit acting as the entanglement mediator. At the heart of our proposals lies the calculation of the exact Landau-Zener transition probability for the qubit, by summing all orders of the corresponding series in time-dependent perturbation theory. This transition probability emerges to be independent of the oscillator frequencies, both inside and outside the regime where a rotating-wave approximation is valid.

Dissipationless Directed Transport in Rocked Single-Band Quantum Dynamics

Using matter waves that are trapped in a deep optical lattice, dissipationless directed transport is demonstrated to occur if the single-band quantum dynamics is periodically tilted on one half of the lattice by a monochromatic field. Most importantly, the directed transport can exist for almost all system parameters, even after averaged over a broad range of single-band initial states. The directed transport is theoretically explained within ac-scattering theory. Total reflection phenomena associated with the matter waves travelling from a tilting-free region to a tilted region are emphasized. The results are of relevance to ultracold physics and solid-state physics, and may lead to powerful means of selective, coherent, and directed transport of cold particles in optical lattices.

Intermediate dynamics between Newton and Langevin

A dynamics between Newton and Langevin formalisms is elucidated within the framework of the generalized Langevin equation. For thermal noise yielding a vanishing zero-frequency friction the corresponding non-Markovian Brownian dynamics exhibits anomalous behavior which is characterized by ballistic diffusion and accelerated transport. We also investigate the role of a possible initial correlation between the system degrees of freedom and the heat-bath degrees of freedom for the asymptotic long-time behavior of the system dynamics. As two test beds we investigate (i) the anomalous energy relaxation of free non-Markovian Brownian motion that is driven by a harmonic velocity noise and (ii) the phenomenon of a net directed acceleration in noise-induced transport of an inertial rocking Brownian motor.

Quantum state preparation in circuit QED via Landau-Zener tunneling

We study a qubit undergoing Landau-Zener transitions enabled by the coupling to a circuit-QED mode. Summing an infinite-order perturbation series, we determine the exact nonadiabatic transition probability for the qubit, being independent of the frequency of the QED mode. Possible applications are single-photon generation and the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement.

Limitation of entanglement due to spatial qubit separation

We consider spatially separated qubits coupled to a thermal bosonic field that causes pure dephasing. Our focus is on the entanglement of two Bell states which for vanishing separation are known as robust and fragile entangled states. The reduced two-qubit dynamics is solved exactly and explicitly. Our results allow us to gain information about the robustness of two-qubit decoherence-free subspaces with respect to physical parameters such as temperature, qubit-bath coupling strength and spatial separation of the qubits. Moreover, we clarify the relation between single-qubit coherence and two-qubit entanglement and identify parameter regimes in which the terms robust and fragile are no longer appropriate.

Quantum Stochastic Synchronization

We study within the spin-boson dynamics the synchronization of quantum tunneling with an external periodic driving signal. As a main result we find that at a sufficiently large system-bath coupling strength (Kondo parameter a>1) the thermal noise plays a constructive role in yielding both a frequency and a phase synchronization in a symmetric two-level system. Such riveting synchronization occurs when the driving frequency supersedes the zero temperature tunneling rate. As an application evidencing the effect, we consider a charge transfer dynamics in molecular complexes.

Controlling Nonlinear Stochastic Resonance by Harmonic Mixing

We investigate the potential for controlling the effect of nonlinear Stochastic Resonance (SR) by use of harmonic mixing signals for an overdamped Brownian dynamics in a symmetric double well potential. The periodic forcing for harmonic mixing consists of a first signal with a basic frequency $Ω$ and a second, superimposed signal oscillating at twice the basic frequency $2Ω$. By variation of the phase difference between these two components and the amplitude ratios of the driving the phenomenon of SR becomes a priori controllable. The harmonic mixing dynamically breaks the symmetry so that the time- and ensemble-average assumes a non-vanishing value. Independently of the noise level, the response can be suppressed by adjusting the phase difference. Nonlinear SR then exhibits resonances at higher harmonics with respect to the applied noise strength and relative phase. The scheme of nonlinear SR via harmonic mixing can be used to steer the nonlinear response and to sensitively measure the internal noise strength. We further demonstrate that the full Fokker-Planck dynamics can be well approximated by a two-state model.

Quantum Two-State Dynamics Driven by Stationary Non-Markovian Discrete Noise: Exact Results

We consider the problem of stochastic averaging of a quantum two-state dynamics driven by non-Markovian, discrete noises of the continuous time random walk type (multistate renewal processes). The emphasis is put on the proper averaging over the stationary noise realizations corresponding, e.g., to a stationary environment. A two state non-Markovian process with an arbitrary non-exponential distribution of residence times (RTDs) in its states with a finite mean residence time provides a paradigm. For the case of a two-state quantum relaxation caused by such a classical stochastic field we obtain the explicit exact, analytical expression for the averaged Laplace-transformed relaxation dynamics. In the limit of Markovian noise (implying an exponential RTD), all previously known results are recovered. We exemplify new more general results for the case of non-Markovian noise with a biexponential RTD. The averaged, real-time relaxation dynamics is obtained in this case by numerically exact solving of a resulting algebraic polynomial problem. Moreover, the case of manifest non-Markovian noise with an infinite range of temporal autocorrelation (which in principle is not accessible to any kind of perturbative treatment) is studied, both analytically (asymptotic long-time dynamics) and numerically (by a precise numerical inversion of the Laplace-transformed averaged quantum relaxation).
