Resonances for obstacles in hyperbolic space

We consider scattering by star-shaped obstacles in hyperbolic space and show that resonances satisfy a universal bound $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\frac{1}{2}$ which is optimal in dimension $2$. In odd dimensions we also show that $\mathrm{Im}\,λ\leq -\fracμρ$ for a universal constant $μ$, where $ρ$ is the radius of a ball containing the obstacle; this gives an improvement for small obstacles. In dimensions $3$ and higher the proofs follow the classical vector field approach of Morawetz, while in dimension $2$ we obtain our bound by working with spaces coming from general relativity. We also show that in odd dimensions resonances of small obstacles are close, in a suitable sense, to Euclidean resonances.

A sharp version of Price's law for wave decay on asymptotically flat spacetimes

We prove Price's law with an explicit leading order term for solutions $ϕ(t,x)$ of the scalar wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes including subextremal Kerr black holes. Our precise asymptotics in the full forward causal cone imply in particular that $ϕ(t,x)=c t^{-3}+\mathcal O(t^{-4+})$ for bounded $|x|$, where $c\in\mathbb C$ is an explicit constant. This decay also holds along the event horizon on Kerr spacetimes and thus renders a result by Luk-Sbierski on the linear scalar instability of the Cauchy horizon unconditional. We moreover prove inverse quadratic decay of the radiation field, with explicit leading order term. We establish analogous results for scattering by stationary potentials with inverse cubic spatial decay. On the Schwarzschild spacetime, we prove pointwise $t^{-2 l-3}$ decay for waves with angular frequency at least $l$, and $t^{-2 l-4}$ decay for waves which are in addition initially static. This definitively settles Price's law for linear scalar waves in full generality. The heart of the proof is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies. Rather than constructing its Schwartz kernel explicitly, we proceed more directly using the geometric microlocal approach to the limiting absorption principle pioneered by Melrose and recently extended to the zero energy limit by Vasy.

Non-linear stability of the Kerr-Newman-de Sitter family of charged black holes

We prove the global non-linear stability, without symmetry assumptions, of slowly rotating charged black holes in de Sitter spacetimes in the context of the initial value problem for the Einstein-Maxwell equations: If one perturbs the initial data of a slowly rotating Kerr-Newman-de Sitter (KNdS) black hole, then in a neighborhood of the exterior region of the black hole, the metric and the electromagnetic field decay exponentially fast to their values for a possibly different member of the KNdS family. This is a continuation of recent work of the author with Vasy on the stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family for the Einstein vacuum equations. Our non-linear iteration scheme automatically finds the final black hole parameters as well as the gauge in which the global solution exists; we work in a generalized wave coordinate/Lorenz gauge, with gauge source functions lying in a suitable finite-dimensional space. We include a self-contained proof of the linear mode stability of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, building on work by Kodama-Ishibashi. In the course of our non-linear stability argument, we also obtain the first proof of the linear (mode) stability of slowly rotating KNdS black holes using robust perturbative techniques.

Stability of Minkowski space and polyhomogeneity of the metric

We study the nonlinear stability of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime as a solution of the Einstein vacuum equation. Similarly to our previous work on the stability of cosmological black holes, we construct the solution of the nonlinear initial value problem using an iteration scheme in which we solve a linearized equation globally at each step; we use a generalized harmonic gauge and implement constraint damping to fix the geometry of null infinity. The linear analysis is largely based on energy and vector field methods originating in work by Klainerman. The weak null condition of Lindblad and Rodnianski arises naturally as a nilpotent coupling of certain metric components in a linear model operator at null infinity. Upon compactifying $\mathbb{R}^4$ to a manifold with corners, with boundary hypersurfaces corresponding to spacelike, null, and timelike infinity, we show, using the framework of Melrose's b-analysis, that polyhomogeneous initial data produce a polyhomogeneous spacetime metric. Finally, we relate the Bondi mass to a logarithmic term in the expansion of the metric at null infinity and prove the Bondi mass loss formula.

Analysis of linear waves near the Cauchy horizon of cosmological black holes

We show that linear scalar waves are bounded and continuous up to the Cauchy horizon of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, and in fact decay exponentially fast to a constant along the Cauchy horizon. We obtain our results by modifying the spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon in a suitable manner, which puts the wave equation into a framework in which a number of standard as well as more recent microlocal regularity and scattering theory results apply. In particular, the conormal regularity of waves at the Cauchy horizon - which yields the boundedness statement - is a consequence of radial point estimates, which are microlocal manifestations of the blue-shift and red-shift effects.

Global analysis of quasilinear wave equations on asymptotically Kerr-de Sitter spaces

We extend the semilinear framework developed by the two authors and the non-trapping quasilinear theory developed by the first author to solve quasilinear wave equations with normally hyperbolic trapping. The most well-known example that fits into our general framework is wave-type equations on Kerr-de Sitter space. The key advance is an adaptation of the Nash-Moser iteration to our framework.

Reconstruction of Lorentzian manifolds from boundary light observation sets

On a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$ with non-empty boundary satisfying a convexity assumption, we show that the topological, differentiable, and conformal structure of suitable subsets $S\subset M$ of sources is uniquely determined by measurements of the intersection of future light cones from points in $S$ with a fixed open subset of the boundary of $M$; here, light rays are reflected at $\partial M$ according to Snell's law. Our proof is constructive, and allows for interior conjugate points as well as multiply reflected and self-intersecting light cones.

Semilinear wave equations on asymptotically de Sitter, Kerr-de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes

In this paper we show the small data solvability of suitable semilinear wave and Klein-Gordon equations on geometric classes of spaces, which include so-called asymptotically de Sitter and Kerr-de Sitter spaces, as well as asymptotically Minkowski spaces. These spaces allow general infinities, called conformal infinity in the asymptotically de Sitter setting; the Minkowski type setting is that of non-trapping Lorentzian scattering metrics introduced by Baskin, Vasy and Wunsch. Our results are obtained by showing the global Fredholm property, and indeed invertibility, of the underlying linear operator on suitable L^2-based function spaces, which also possess appropriate algebra or more complicated multiplicative properties. The linear framework is based on the b-analysis, in the sense of Melrose, introduced in this context by Vasy to describe the asymptotic behavior of solutions of linear equations. An interesting feature of the analysis is that resonances, namely poles of the inverse of the Mellin transformed b-normal operator, which are `quantum' (not purely symbolic) objects, play an important role.

Boundedness and decay of scalar waves at the Cauchy horizon of the Kerr spacetime

Adapting and extending the techniques developed in recent work with Vasy for the study of the Cauchy horizon of cosmological spacetimes, we obtain boundedness, regularity and decay of linear scalar waves on subextremal Reissner-Nordström and (slowly rotating) Kerr spacetimes, without any symmetry assumptions; in particular, we provide simple microlocal and scattering theoretic proofs of analogous results by Franzen. We show polynomial decay of linear waves relative to a Sobolev space of order slightly above $1/2$. This complements the generic $H^1_{\mathrm{loc}}$ blow-up result of Luk and Oh.

Resonance expansions for tensor-valued waves on asymptotically Kerr-de Sitter spaces

In recent joint work with Vasy, we analyze the low energy behavior of differential form-valued waves on black hole spacetimes. In order to deduce asymptotics and decay from this, one in addition needs high energy estimates for the wave operator acting on sections of the form bundle. The present paper provides these on perturbations of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spaces in all spacetime dimensions $n\geq 4$. In fact, we prove exponential decay, up to a finite-dimensional space of resonances, of waves valued in any finite rank subbundle of the tensor bundle, which in particular includes differential forms and symmetric tensors. As the main technical tool for working on vector bundles that do not have a natural positive definite inner product, we introduce pseudodifferential inner products, which are inner products depending on the position in phase space.

The global non-linear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes

We establish the full global non-linear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes, as solutions of the initial value problem for the Einstein vacuum equations with positive cosmological constant, for small angular momenta, and without any symmetry assumptions on the initial data. We achieve this by extending the linear and non-linear analysis on black hole spacetimes described in a sequence of earlier papers by the authors: We develop a general framework which enables us to deal systematically with the diffeomorphism invariance of Einstein's equations. In particular, the iteration scheme used to solve Einstein's equations automatically finds the parameters of the Kerr-de Sitter black hole that the solution is asymptotic to, the exponentially decaying tail of the solution, and the gauge in which we are able to find the solution; the gauge here is a wave map/DeTurck type gauge, modified by source terms which are treated as unknowns, lying in a suitable finite-dimensional space.

Asymptotics for the wave equation on differential forms on Kerr-de Sitter space

We study asymptotics for solutions of Maxwell's equations, in fact of the Hodge-de Rham equation $(d+δ)u=0$ without restriction on the form degree, on a geometric class of stationary spacetimes with a warped product type structure (without any symmetry assumptions), which in particular include Schwarzschild-de Sitter spaces of all spacetime dimensions $n\geq 4$. We prove that solutions decay exponentially to $0$ or to stationary states in every form degree, and give an interpretation of the stationary states in terms of cohomological information of the spacetime. We also study the wave equation on differential forms and in particular prove analogous results on Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. We demonstrate the stability of our analysis and deduce asymptotics and decay for solutions of Maxwell's equations, the Hodge-de Rham equation and the wave equation on differential forms on Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes with small angular momentum.

Non-trapping estimates near normally hyperbolic trapping

In this paper we prove semiclassical resolvent estimates for operators with normally hyperbolic trapping which are lossless relative to non-trapping estimates but take place in weaker function spaces. In particular, we obtain non-trapping estimates in standard $L^2$ spaces for the resolvent sandwiched between operators which localize away from the trapped set $Γ$ in a rather weak sense, namely whose principal symbols vanish on $Γ$.

Global well-posedness of quasilinear wave equations on asymptotically de Sitter spaces

We establish the small data solvability of suitable quasilinear wave and Klein-Gordon equations in high regularity spaces on a geometric class of spacetimes including asymptotically de Sitter spaces. We obtain our results by proving the global invertibility of linear operators with coefficients in high regularity $L^2$-based function spaces and using iterative arguments for the non-linear problems. The linear analysis is accomplished in two parts: Firstly, a regularity theory is developed by means of a calculus for pseudodifferential operators with non-smooth coefficients, similar to the one developed by Beals and Reed, on manifolds with boundary. Secondly, the asymptotic behavior of solutions to linear equations is studied using standard b-analysis, introduced in this context by Vasy; in particular, resonances play an important role.

Black hole gluing in de Sitter space

We construct dynamical many-black-hole spacetimes with well-controlled asymptotic behavior as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation with positive cosmological constant. We accomplish this by gluing Schwarzschild-de Sitter or Kerr-de Sitter black hole metrics into neighborhoods of points on the future conformal boundary of de Sitter space, under certain balance conditions on the black hole parameters. We give a self-contained treatment of solving the Einstein equation directly for the metric, given the scattering data we encounter at the future conformal boundary. The main step in the construction is the solution of a linear divergence equation for trace-free symmetric 2-tensors; this is closely related to Friedrich's analysis of scattering problems for the Einstein equation on asymptotically simple spacetimes.

Linear stability of slowly rotating Kerr black holes

We prove the linear stability of slowly rotating Kerr black holes as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation: linearized perturbations of a Kerr metric decay at an inverse polynomial rate to a linearized Kerr metric plus a pure gauge term. We work in a natural wave map/DeTurck gauge and show that the pure gauge term can be taken to lie in a fixed 7-dimensional space with a simple geometric interpretation. Our proof rests on a robust general framework, based on recent advances in microlocal analysis and non-elliptic Fredholm theory, for the analysis of resolvents of operators on asymptotically flat spaces. With the mode stability of the Schwarzschild metric as well as of certain scalar and 1-form wave operators on the Schwarzschild spacetime as an input, we establish the linear stability of slowly rotating Kerr black holes using perturbative arguments; in particular, our proof does not make any use of special algebraic properties of the Kerr metric. The heart of the paper is a detailed description of the resolvent of the linearization of a suitable hyperbolic gauge-fixed Einstein operator at low energies. As in previous work by the second and third authors on the nonlinear stability of cosmological black holes, constraint damping plays an important role. Here, it eliminates certain pathological generalized zero energy states; it also ensures that solutions of our hyperbolic formulation of the linearized Einstein equation have the stated asymptotics and decay for general initial data and forcing terms, which is a useful feature in nonlinear and numerical applications.

Normally hyperbolic trapping on asymptotically stationary spacetimes

We prove microlocal estimates at the trapped set of asymptotically Kerr spacetimes: these are spacetimes whose metrics decay inverse polynomially in time to a stationary subextremal Kerr metric. This combines two independent results. The first one is purely dynamical: we show that the stable and unstable manifolds of a decaying perturbation of a time-translation-invariant dynamical system with normally hyperbolic trapping are smooth and decay to their stationary counterparts. The second, independent, result provides microlocal estimates for operators whose null-bicharacteristic flow has a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, under suitable non-degeneracy conditions on the stable and unstable manifolds; this includes operators on closed manifolds, as well as operators on spacetimes for which the invariant manifold lies at future infinity.

Strong cosmic censorship in charged black-hole spacetimes: still subtle

It was recently shown that Strong Cosmic Censorship may be violated in highly charged black-hole spacetimes living in a universe with a positive cosmological constant. Several follow-up works have since suggested that such result, while conceptually interesting, cannot be upheld in practice. We focus here on the claim that the presence of charged massive scalars suffices to save Strong Cosmic Censorship. To the contrary, we show that there still exists a finite region in parameter space where Strong Cosmic Censorship is expected to be violated.
