Quantitative partitioned index theorem and noncompact band-width

Gromov's band-width conjecture gives a precise upper bound for the width of a compact Riemannian band with positive scalar curvature lower bound, assuming that the cross-section of the band admits no positive scalar curvature metrics. Versions of this were proved by Cecchini and by Zeidler. In this paper, we develop a quantitative version of partitioned manifold index theory, which applies to noncompact hypersurfaces. Using this, we prove a version of Gromov's band-width estimate for possibly noncompact Riemannian bands.

A partitioned manifold index theorem for noncompact hypersurfaces

Roe's partitioned manifold index theorem applies when a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ is cut into two pieces along a compact hypersurface $N$. It states that a version of the index of a Dirac operator on $M$ localized to $N$ equals the index of the corresponding Dirac operator on $N$. This yields obstructions to positive scalar curvature, and implies cobordism invariance of the index of Dirac operators on compact manifolds. We generalize this result to cases where $N$ may be noncompact, under assumptions on the way it is embedded into $M$. This results in an equality between two classes in the $K$-theory of the Roe algebra of $N$. Bunke and Ludewig, and Engel and Wulff, have recently obtained related results based on different approaches.

The Equivariant Fried Conjecture for Suspension Flow of an Equivariant Isometry

The Fried conjecture states that the Ruelle dynamical $\zeta$-function of a flow on a compact maniofold has a well-defined value at $0$, whose absolute value equals the Ray-Singer analytic torsion invariant. The first author and Saratchandran proposed an equivariant version of the Fried conjecture for locally compact unimodular groups acting properly, isometrically, and cocompactly on Riemannian manifolds. In this paper we prove the equivariant Fried conjecture for the suspension flow of an equivariant isometry of a Riemannian manifold in several cases. These include the case where the group is compact, the case where the group element in question has compact centraliser and closed conjugacy class, and the case of the identity element of a non-compact discrete group.

A higher index and rapidly decaying kernels

We construct an index of first-order, self-adjoint, elliptic differential operators in the $K$-theory of a Fr\'echet algebra of smooth kernels with faster than exponential off-diagonal decay. We show that this index can be represented by an idempotent involving heat operators. The rapid decay of the kernels in the algebra used is helpful in proving convergence of pairings with cyclic cocycles. Representing the index in terms of heat operators allows one to use heat kernel asymptotics to compute such pairings. We give a link to von Neumann algebras and $L^2$-index theorems as an immediate application, and work out further applications in other papers.

An equivariant Guillemin trace formula

Guillemin's trace formula is an expression for the distributional trace of an operator defined by pulling back functions along a flow on a compact manifold. We obtain an equivariant generalisation of this formula, for proper, cocompact group actions. This is motivated by the construction of an equivariant version of the Ruelle dynamical $\zeta$-function in another paper by the same authors, which is based on the equivariant Guillemin trace formula. To obtain this formula, we first develop an equivariant version of the distributional trace that appears in Guillemin's formula and other places.

Equivariant Spectral Flow for Families of Dirac-type Operators

In the setting of a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact, unimodular group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold, we construct equivariant spectral flow of paths of Dirac-type operators. This takes values in the $K$-theory of the group $C^*$-algebra of $G$. In the case where $G$ is the fundamental group of a compact manifold, the summation map maps equivariant spectral flow on the universal cover to classical spectral flow on the base manifold. We obtain "index equals spectral flow" results. In the setting of a smooth path of $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on a $G$-spin manifold, we show that the equivariant spectral flow of the corresponding path of spin Dirac operators relates delocalised $\eta$-invariants and $\rho$-invariants for different positive scalar curvature metrics to each other.

A Lefschetz fixed-point formula for noncompact fixed-point sets

We obtain an equivariant index theorem, or Lefschetz fixed-point formula, for isometries from complete Riemannian manifolds to themselves. The fixed-point set of such an isometry may be noncompact. We build on techniques developed by Roe. Key new ingredients are a localised functional on operators with bounded smooth kernels, and an algebra (reminiscent of Yu's localisation algebra) of `asymptotically local' operators, on which this functional has an asymptotic trace property. As consequences, we show that some earlier indices used are special cases of the one we introduce here, and obtain an obstruction to positive scalar curvature.

A Ruelle dynamical zeta function for equivariant flows

For proper group actions on smooth manifolds, with compact quotients, we define an equivariant version of the Ruelle dynamical $\zeta$-function for equivariant flows satisfying a nondegeneracy condition. The construction is based on an equivariant generalisation of Guillemin's trace formula, obtained in a companion paper. This formula implies several properties of the equivariant Ruelle $\zeta$-function. We ask the question in what situations an equivariant generalisation of Fried's conjecture holds, relating the equivariant Ruelle $\zeta$-function to equivariant analytic torsion. We compute the equivariant Ruelle $\zeta$-function in several examples, including examples where the classical Ruelle $\zeta$-function is not defined. The equivariant Fried conjecture holds in the examples where the condition of the conjecture (vanishing of the kernel of the Laplacian) is satisfied.

Equivariant analytic torsion for proper actions

We construct an equivariant version of Ray-Singer analytic torsion for proper, isometric actions by locally compact groups on Riemannian manifolds, with compact quotients. We obtain results on convergence, metric independence, vanishing for even-dimensional manifolds, a product formula, and a decomposition of classical Ray-Singer analytic torsion as a sum over conjugacy classes of equivariant torsion on universal covers. We do explicit computations for the circle and the line acting on themselves, and for regular elliptic elements of $\operatorname{SO}_0(3,1)$ acting on $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space. Our constructions and results generalise several earlier constructions of equivariant analytic torsion and their properties, most of which apply to finite or compact groups, or to fundamental groups of compact manifolds acting on their universal covers. These earlier versions of equivariant analytic torsion were associated to finite or compact conjugacy classes; we allow noncompact conjugacy classes, under suitable growth conditions.

An equivariant Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for proper actions I: the index formula

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular locally compact group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, such that $M/G$ is compact. For an equivariant, elliptic operator $D$ on $M$, and an element $g \in G$, we define a numerical index $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$, in terms of a parametrix for $D$ and a trace associated to $g$. We prove an equivariant Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for this index. We first state general analytic conditions under which this theorem holds, and then show that these conditions are satisfied if $g=e$ is the identity element; if $G$ is a finitely generated, discrete group, and the conjugacy class of $g$ has polynomial growth; and if $G$ is a connected, linear, real semisimple Lie group, and $g$ is a semisimple element. In the classical case, where $M$ is compact and $G$ is trivial, our arguments reduce to a relatively short and simple proof of the original Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem. In part II of this series, we prove that, under certain conditions, $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ can be recovered from a $K$-theoretic index of $D$ via a trace defined by the orbital integral over the conjugacy class of $g$.

An absolute version of the Gromov-Lawson relative index theorem

A Dirac operator on a complete manifold is Fredholm if it is invertible outside a compact set. Assuming a compact group to act on all relevant structure, and the manifold to have a warped product structure outside such a compact set, we express the equivariant index of such a Dirac operator as an Atiyah-Segal-Singer type contribution from inside this compact set, and a contribution from outside this set. Consequences include equivariant versions of the relative index theorem of Gromov and Lawson, in the case of manifolds with warped product structures at infinity, and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem.

Spectral Asymmetry and Index Theory on Manifolds with Generalised Hyperbolic Cusps

We consider a complete Riemannian manifold, which consists of a compact interior and one or more $\varphi$-cusps: infinitely long ends of a type that includes cylindrical ends and hyperbolic cusps. Here $\varphi$ is a function of the radial coordinate that describes the shape of such an end. Given an action by a compact Lie group on such a manifold, we obtain an equivariant index theorem for Dirac operators, under conditions on $\varphi$. These conditions hold in the cases of cylindrical ends and hyperbolic cusps. In the case of cylindrical ends, the cusp contribution equals the delocalised $\eta$-invariant, and the index theorem reduces to Donnelly's equivariant index theory on compact manifolds with boundary. In general, we find that the cusp contribution is zero if the spectrum of the relevant Dirac operator on a hypersurface is symmetric around zero.

An index theorem for higher orbital integrals

Recently, two of the authors of this paper constructed cyclic cocycles on Harish-Chandra's Schwartz algebra of linear reductive Lie groups that detect all information in the $K$-theory of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebra. The main result in this paper is an index formula for the pairings of these cocycles with equivariant indices of elliptic operators for proper, cocompact actions. This index formula completely determines such equivariant indices via topological expressions.

An equivariant Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for proper actions II: the $K$-theoretic index

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular locally compact group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, such that $M/G$ is compact. Then an equivariant Dirac-type operator $D$ on $M$ under a suitable boundary condition has an equivariant index $\operatorname{index}_G(D)$ in the $K$-theory of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra $C^*_rG$ of $G$. This is a common generalisation of the Baum-Connes analytic assembly map and the (equivariant) Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index. In part I of this series, a numerical index $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ was defined for an element $g \in G$, in terms of a parametrix of $D$ and a trace associated to $g$. An Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type index formula was obtained for this index. In this paper, we show that, under certain conditions, $τ_g(\operatorname{index}_G(D)) = \operatorname{index}_g(D)$, for a trace $τ_g$ defined by the orbital integral over the conjugacy class of $g$. This implies that the index theorem from part I yields information about the $K$-theoretic index $\operatorname{index}_G(D)$. It also shows that $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ is a homotopy-invariant quantity.

Coarse geometry and Callias quantisation

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. For equivariant elliptic operators that are invertible outside a cocompact subset of $M$, we show that a localised index in the $K$-theory of the maximal group $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is well-defined. The approach is based on the use of maximal versions of equivariant localised Roe algebras, and many of the technical arguments in this paper are used to handle the ways in which they differ from their reduced versions. By using the maximal group $C^*$-algebra instead of its reduced counterpart, we can apply the trace given by integration over $G$ to recover an index defined earlier by the last two authors, and developed further by Braverman, in terms of sections invariant under the group action. As a very special case, this allows one to refine numerical obstructions to positive scalar curvature on a noncompact $\operatorname{Spin}$ manifold $X$ defined via Callias index theory, to obstructions in the $K$-theory of the maximal $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$. As a motivating application in another direction, we prove a version of Guillemin and Sternberg's quantisation commutes with reduction principle for equivariant indices of $\operatorname{Spin}^c$ Callias-type operators.

An equivariant orbifold index for proper actions

For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal compact subgroup, we realise the Dirac induction map from the Connes--Kasparov conjecture as a Kasparov product and obtain an index theorem for Spin-Dirac operators on compact locally symmetric spaces.

Positive scalar curvature and an equivariant Callias-type index theorem for proper actions

For a proper action by a locally compact group $G$ on a manifold $M$ with a $G$-equivariant Spin-structure, we obtain obstructions to the existence of complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature. We focus on the case where $M/G$ is noncompact. The obstructions follow from a Callias-type index theorem, and relate to positive scalar curvature near hypersurfaces in $M$. We also deduce some other applications of this index theorem. If $G$ is a connected Lie group, then the obstructions to positive scalar curvature vanish under a mild assumption on the action. In that case, we generalise a construction by Lawson and Yau to obtain complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature, under an equivariant bounded geometry assumption.
