Spin-wave theory for dimerized ferromagnetic chains

We describe a Peierls dimerization which occurs in ferromagnetic spin chains at finite temperature, within the modified spin-wave theory. Usual spin-wave theory is modified by introducing a Lagrange multiplier which enforces a nonmagnetic state at finite temperature. It is shown that this method gives results in excellent agreement with the density--matrix renormalization group applied to transfer matrices for dimerized ferromagnetic chains. We study bond correlation functions and explore the characteristic features of dimerization in the specific heat.

Orbitally induced string formation in the spin-orbital polarons

We study the spectral function of a single hole doped into the (a,b) plane of the Mott insulator LaVO$_3$, with antiferromagnetic (AF) spin order of S=1 spins accompanied by alternating orbital (AO) order of active $\{d_{yz},d_{zx}\}$ orbitals. Starting from the respective t-J model, with spin-orbital superexchange and effective three-site hopping terms, we derive the polaron Hamiltonian and show that a hole couples simultaneously to the collective excitations of the AF/AO phase, magnons and orbitons. Next, we solve this polaron problem using the self-consistent Born approximation and find a stable quasiparticle solution -- a spin-orbital polaron. We show that the spin-orbital polaron resembles the orbital polaron found in $e_g$ systems, as e.g. in K$_2$CuF$_4$ or (to some extent) in LaMnO$_3$, and that the hole may be seen as confined in a string-like potential. However, the spins also play a crucial role in the formation of this polaron -- we explain how the orbital degrees of freedom: (i) confine the spin dynamics acting on the hole as the classical Ising spins, and (ii) generate the string potential which is of the joint spin-orbital character. Finally, we discuss the impact of the results presented here on the understanding of the phase diagrams of the lightly doped cubic vanadates.

Reiter's polaron wavefunction applied to a $t_{2g}$ orbital t-J model

Using the self-consistent Born approximation we calculate Reiter's wavefunction for a single hole introduced into the undoped and orbitally ordered ground state of the t-J model with $t_{2g}$ orbital degrees of freedom. While the number of excitations is similar to the spin t-J model for a given J/t, a distinct structure of the calculated wavefunction and its momentum dependence is identified suggesting the formation of a novel type of mobile polarons.

Spectral properties of orbital polarons in Mott insulators

We address the spectral properties of Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom, and investigate cases where the orbital symmetry leads to Ising-like superexchange in the orbital sector. The paradigm of a hole propagating by its coupling to quantum fluctuations, known from the spin t-J model, then no longer applies. We find instead that when one of the two orbital flavors is immobile, as in the Falicov-Kimball model, trapped orbital polarons coexist with free hole propagation emerging from the effective three-site hopping in the regime of large on-site Coulomb interaction U. The spectral functions are found analytically in this case within the retraceable path approximation in one and two dimensions. On the contrary, when both of the orbitals are active, as in the model for $t_{2g}$ electrons in two dimensions, we find propagating polarons with incoherent scattering dressing the moving hole and renormalizing the quasiparticle dispersion. Here, the spectral functions, calculated using the self-consistent Born approximation, are anisotropic and depend on the orbital flavor. Unbiased conclusions concerning the spectral properties are established by comparing the above results for the orbital t-J models with those obtained using the variational cluster approximation or exact diagonalization for the corresponding Hubbard models. The present work makes predictions concerning the essential features of photoemission spectra of certain fluorides and vanadates.

Evolution of Spin-Orbital-Lattice Coupling in the $R$VO$_3$ Perovskites

We introduce a microscopic model which unravels the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed phase diagram of the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites. It reveals a nontrivial interplay between superexchange, the orbital-lattice coupling due to the GdFeO$_3$-like rotations of the VO$_6$ octahedra, and orthorhombic lattice distortions. We find that the lattice strain affects the onset of the magnetic and orbital order by partial suppression of orbital fluctuations. The present approach provides also a natural explanation of the observed reduction of magnon energies from LaVO$_3$ to YVO$_3$.

Spin-orbital entanglement near quantum phase transitions

Spin-orbital entanglement in the ground state of a one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes$SU(2) spin-orbital model is analyzed using exact diagonalization of finite chains. For $S=1/2$ spins and $T=1/2$ pseudospins one finds that the quantum entanglement is similar at the SU(4) symmetry point and in the spin-orbital valence bond state. We also show that quantum transitions in spin-orbital models turn out to be continuous under certain circumstances, in constrast to the discontinuous transitions in spin models with SU(2) symmetry.

One-dimensional orbital fluctuations and the exotic magnetic properties of YVO$_3$

Starting from the Mott insulator picture for cubic vanadates, we derive and investigate the model of superexchange interactions between V$^{3+}$ ions, with nearly degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals occupied by two electrons each. The superexchange interactions are strongly frustrated and demonstrate a strong interrelation between possible types of magnetic and orbital order. We elucidate the prominent role played by fluctuations of $yz$ and $xz$ orbitals which generate ferromagnetic superexchange interactions even in the absence of Hund's exchange. In this limit we find orbital valence bond state which is replaced either by $C$-type antiferromagnetic order with weak $G$-type orbital order at increasing Hund's exchange, or instead by $G$-type antiferromagnetic order when the lattice distortions stabilize $C$-type orbital order. Both phases are observed in YVO$_3$ and we argue that a dimerized $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase with stronger and weaker FM bonds alternating along the c axis may be stabilized by large spin-orbital entropy at finite temperature. This suggests a scenario which explains the origin of the exotic $C$-AF order observed in YVO$_3$ in the regime of intermediate temperatures and allows one to specify the necessary ingredients of a more complete future theory.

Spin-Orbital Entanglement and Violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori Rules

We point out that large composite spin-orbital fluctuations in Mott insulators with $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy are a manifestation of quantum entanglement of spin and orbital variables. This results in a dynamical nature of the spin superexchange interactions, which fluctuate over positive and negative values, and leads to an apparent violation of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. Domain-wall excitons and optical conductivity in one-dimensional Wigner lattices

Motivated by the recent finding that doped edge-sharing Cu-O chain compounds like Na$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$ and Na$_8$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ are realizations of one-dimensional Wigner crystals, we study the optical spectra of such systems. Charge excitations in 1D Wigner crystals are described in terms of domain wall excitations with fractional charge. We investigate analytically and numerically the domain-wall excitations that dominate the optical absorption, and analyse the dispersion and the parameter range of exciton states characteristic for the long-ranged Coulomb attraction between domain walls. Here we focus on the Wigner lattice at quarter-filling relevant for Na$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$ and analyze in particular the role of second neighbor hopping $t_2$ which is important in edge-sharing chain compounds. Large $t_2$ drives an instability of the Wigner lattice via a soft domain-wall exciton towards a charge-density wave with a modulation period distinct from that of the Wigner lattice. Furthermore we calculate the temperature dependence of the DC-conductivity and show that it can be described by activated behavior combined with a $T^{-α}$ dependent mobility.

Fingerprints of spin-orbital physics in cubic Mott insulators: Magnetic exchange interactions and optical spectral weights

The temperature dependence and anisotropy of optical spectral weights associated with different multiplet transitions is determined by the spin and orbital correlations. To provide a systematic basis to exploit this close relationship between magnetism and optical spectra, we present and analyze the spin-orbital superexchange models for a series of representative orbital-degenerate transition metal oxides with different multiplet structure. For each case we derive the magnetic exchange constants, which determine the spin wave dispersions, as well as the partial optical sum rules. The magnetic and optical properties of early transition metal oxides with degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals (titanates and vanadates with perovskite structure) are shown to depend only on two parameters, viz. the superexchange energy $J$ and the ratio $η$ of Hund's exchange to the intraorbital Coulomb interaction, and on the actual orbital state. In $e_g$ systems important corrections follow from charge transfer excitations, and we show that KCuF$_3$ can be classified as a charge transfer insulator, while LaMnO$_3$ is a Mott insulator with moderate charge transfer contributions. In some cases orbital fluctuations are quenched and decoupling of spin and orbital degrees of freedom with static orbital order gives satisfactory results for the optical weights. On the example of cubic vanadates we describe a case where the full quantum spin-orbital physics must be considered. Thus information on optical excitations, their energies, temperature dependence and anisotropy, combined with the results of magnetic neutron scattering experiments, provides an important consistency test of the spin-orbital models, and indicates whether orbital and/or spin fluctuations are important in a given compound.

Self-localization of composite spin-lattice polarons

Self-localization of holes in the Holstein t-J model is studied in the adiabatic limit using exact diagonalization and the retraceable path approximation. It is shown that the critical electron-phonon coupling λ_c decreases with increasing J and that this behavior is determined mainly by the incoherent rather than by the coherent motion of the hole. The obtained spin correlation functions in the localized region can be understood within a percolation picture where antiferromagnetic order can persist up to a substantial hole doping. These results restrict the possibility of self-localization of holes in lightly doped cuprates.

Spin-orbital physics in the optical conductivity of quarter-filled manganites

Using finite-temperature diagonalization we investigate the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and spin-orbital dynamics in the CE phase of half-doped manganites. We find $σ(ω)$ characterized by a broad spectrum with pronounced optical gap due to charge ordering induced by Coulomb and further neighbor Jahn-Teller interactions. With increasing temperature the conductivity shows a significant change over a wide energy range with a characteristic shift towards lower frequencies. In the low temperature CE phase we observe in-gap absorption due to combined orbiton-spin excitations.

Doping dependence of density response and bond-stretching phonons in cuprates

We explain the anomalous doping dependence of zone boundary $(π,0)$ and $(π,π)$ bond-stretching phonons in the high-temperature superconductor La$_{2-δ}$Sr$_δ$CuO$_4$ in the doping range $0<δ<0.35$. Our calculations are based on a theory for the density response of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators.

Theory of optical spectral weights in Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom

Introducing partial sum rules for the optical multiplet transitions, we outline a unified approach to magnetic and optical properties of strongly correlated transition metal oxides. On the example of LaVO$_3$ we demonstrate how the temperature and polarization dependences of different components of the optical multiplet are determined by the underlying spin and orbital correlations dictated by the low-energy superexchange Hamiltonian. Thereby the optical data provides deep insight into the complex spin-orbital physics and the role played by orbital fluctuations.

Manganites at Quarter Filling: Role of Jahn-Teller Interactions

We have analyzed different correlation functions in a realistic spin-orbital model for half-doped manganites. Using a finite-temperature diagonalization technique the CE phase was found in the charge-ordered phase in the case of small antiferromagnetic interactions between $t_{2g}$ electrons. It is shown that a key ingredient responsible for stabilization of the CE-type spin and orbital-ordered state is the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) interaction between next-nearest Mn$^{+3}$ neighbors mediated by the breathing mode distortion of Mn$^{+4}$ octahedra and displacements of Mn$^{+4}$ ions. The topological phase factor in the Mn-Mn hopping leading to gap formation in one-dimensional models for the CE phase as well as the nearest neighbor JT coupling are not able to produce the zigzag chains typical for the CE phase in our model.

Dimerization versus Orbital Moment Ordering in the Mott insulator YVO$_3$

We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of $t_{2g}$ orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO$_6$ octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO$_3$. At finite temperature an orbital Peierls instability in the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in absence of lattice distortions. The calculated spin structure factor shows a magnon splitting due to the orbital Peierls dimerization.

Temperature dependence of optical spectral weights in quarter-filled ladder systems

The temperature dependence of the integrated optical conductivity I(T) reflects the changes of the kinetic energy as spin and charge correlations develop. It provides a unique way to explore experimentally the kinetic properties of strongly correlated systems. We calculated I(T) in the frame of a t-J-V model at quarter-filling for ladder systems, like NaV_2O_5, and show that the measured strong T dependence of I(T) for NaV_2O_5 can be explained by the destruction of short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Thus I(T) provides detailed information about super-exchange and magnetic energy scales.

Photoemission spectra of LaMnO3 controlled by orbital excitations

We investigate the spectral function of a hole moving in the orbital-ordered ferromagnetic planes of LaMnO$_3$, and show that it depends critically on the type of orbital ordering. While the hole does not couple to the spin excitations, it interacts strongly with the excitations of $e_g$ orbitals (orbitons), leading to new type of quasiparticles with a dispersion on the orbiton energy scale and with strongly enhanced mass and reduced weight. Therefore we predict a large redistribution of spectral weight with respect to the bands found in local density approximation (LDA) or in LDA+U.
