Differentiability of quadratic forward-backward SDEs with rough drift

In this paper, we consider quadratic forward-backward SDEs (QFBSDEs), for {which} the drift in the forward equation does not satisfy the standard globally Lipschitz condition and the driver of the backward system {possesses} nonlinearity of type $f(|y|)|z|^2,$ where $f$ is any locally integrable function. We prove both the Malliavin and classical derivative of the QFBSDE and provide representations of these processes. We study a numerical approximation of this system in the sense of \cite{ImkDosReis} in which the authors assume that the drift is Lipschitz and the driver of the BSDE is quadratic in the traditional sense (i.e., $f$ is a positive constant). We show that the rate of convergence is the same as in \cite{ImkDosReis}

Rough Weierstrass functions and dynamical systems: the smoothness of the SBR measure

We investigate Weierstrass functions with roughness parameter $\gamma$ that are H\"older continuous with coefficient $H={\log\gamma}/{\log \frac12}.$ Analytical access is provided by an embedding into a dynamical system related to the baker transform where the graphs of the functions are identified as their global attractors. They possess stable manifolds hosting Sinai-Bowen-Ruelle (SBR) measures. We systematically exploit a telescoping property of associated measures to give an alternative proof of the absolute continuity of the SBR measure for large enough $\gamma$ with square-integrable density. Telescoping allows a macroscopic argument using the transversality of the flow related to the mapping describing the stable manifold. The smoothness of the SBR measure can be used to compute the Hausdorff dimension of the graphs of the original Weierstrass functions and investigate their local times.

Hurst index estimation in stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion

We consider the problem of Hurst index estimation for solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by an additive fractional Brownian motion. Using techniques of the Malliavin calculus, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the quadratic variations of the solution, defined via higher order increments. Then we apply our results to construct and study estimators for the Hurst index.

On the Hausdorff dimension of a 2-dimensional Weierstrass curve

We compute the Hausdorff dimension of a two-dimensional Weierstrass function, related to lacunary (Hadamard gap) power series, that has no Lévy area. This is done by interpreting it as a pullback attractor of a dynamical system based on the Baker transformation. A lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension is obtained by investigating the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the graph along scaled neighborhoods of stable fibers of the underlying dynamical system following the graph. Scaling ideas are crucial. They become accessible by self similarity properties of a mapping whose increments coincide with vertical distances on the stable fibers.

Optimal stopping with f -expectations: the irregular case

We consider the optimal stopping problem with non-linear $f$-expectation (induced by a BSDE) without making any regularity assumptions on the reward process $ξ$. and with general filtration. We show that the value family can be aggregated by an optional process $Y$. We characterize the process $Y$ as the $\mathcal{E}^f$-Snell envelope of $ξ$. We also establish an infinitesimal characterization of the value process $Y$ in terms of a Reflected BSDE with $ξ$ as the obstacle. To do this, we first establish a comparison theorem for irregular RBSDEs. We give an application to the pricing of American options with irregular pay-off in an imperfect market model.

Doubly Reflected BSDEs and ${\cal E}^{f}$-Dynkin games: beyond the right-continuous case

We formulate a notion of doubly reflected BSDE in the case where the barriers $ξ$ and $ζ$ do not satisfy any regularity assumption and with a general filtration. Under a technical assumption (a Mokobodzki-type condition), we show existence and uniqueness of the solution. In the case where $ξ$ is right upper-semicontinuous and $ζ$ is right lower-semicontinuous, the solution is characterized in terms of the value of a corresponding $\mathcal{E}^f$-Dynkin game, i.e. a game problem over stopping times with (non-linear) $f$-expectation, where $f$ is the driver of the doubly reflected BSDE. In the general case where the barriers do not satisfy any regularity assumptions, the solution of the doubly reflected BSDE is related to the value of ''an extension'' of the previous non-linear game problem over a larger set of ''stopping strategies'' than the set of stopping times. This characterization is then used to establish a comparison result and \textit{a priori} estimates with universal constants.

Differentiability of SDEs with drifts of super-linear growth

We close an unexpected gap in the literature of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with drifts of super linear growth (and random coefficients), namely, we prove Malliavin and Parametric Differentiability of such SDEs. The former is shown by proving Ray Absolute Continuity and Stochastic G\^ateaux Differentiability. This method enables one to take limits in probability rather than mean square which bypasses the potentially non-integrable error terms from the unbounded drift. This issue is strongly linked with the difficulties of the standard methodology from Nualart's 2006 work, Lemma 1.2.3 for this setting. Several examples illustrating the range and scope of our results are presented. We close with parametric differentiability and recover representations linking both derivatives as well as a Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula.

Utility maximization via decoupling fields

We consider the utility maximization problem for a general class of utility functions defined on the real line. We rely on existing results which reduce the problem to a coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE) and concentrate on showing existence and uniqueness of solution processes to this FBSDE. We use the method of decoupling fields for strongly coupled, multi-dimensional and possibly non-Lipschitz systems as the central technique in conducting the proofs.

American Options with Asymmetric Information and Reflected BSDE

We consider an American contingent claim on a financial market where the buyer has additional information. Both agents (seller and buyer) observe the same prices, while the information available to them may differ due to some extra exogenous knowledge the buyer has. The buyer's information flow is modeled by an initial enlargement of the reference filtration. It seems natural to investigate the value of the American contingent claim with asymmetric information. We provide a representation for the cost of the additional information relying on some results on reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDE). This is done by using an interpretation of prices of American contingent claims with extra information for the buyer by solutions of appropriate RBSDE.

Paracontrolled distributions and singular PDEs

We introduce an approach to study certain singular PDEs which is based on techniques from paradifferential calculus and on ideas from the theory of controlled rough paths. We illustrate its applicability on some model problems like differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion, a fractional Burgers type SPDE driven by space-time white noise, and a non-linear version of the parabolic Anderson model with a white noise potential.

Reflected BSDEs when the obstacle is not right-continuous and optimal stopping

In the first part of the paper, we study reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDEs) with lower obstacle which is assumed to be right upper-semicontinuous but not necessarily right-continuous. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solutions to such RBSDEs in appropriate Banach spaces. The result is established by using some tools from the general theory of processes such as Mertens decomposition of optional strong (but not necessarily right-continuous) supermartingales, some tools from optimal stopping theory, as well as an appropriate generalization of It{ô}'s formula due to Gal'chouk and Lenglart. In the second part of the paper, we provide some links between the RBSDE studied in the first part and an optimal stopping problem in which the risk of a financial position $ξ$ is assessed by an $f$-conditional expectation $\mathcal{E}^f(\cdot)$ (where $f$ is a Lipschitz driver). We characterize the "value function" of the problem in terms of the solution to our RBSDE. Under an additional assumption of left upper-semicontinuity on $ξ$, we show the existence of an optimal stopping time. We also provide a generalization of Mertens decomposition to the case of strong $\mathcal{E}^f$-supermartingales.

An FBSDE approach to the Skorokhod embedding problem for Gaussian processes with non-linear drift

We solve the Skorokhod embedding problem for a class of Gaussian processes including Brownian motion with non-linear drift. Our approach relies on solving an associated strongly coupled system of Forward Backward Stochastic Differential Equation (FBSDE), and investigating the regularity of the obtained solution. For this purpose we extend the existence, uniqueness and regularity theory of so called decoupling fields for Markovian FBSDE to a setting in which the coefficients are only locally Lipschitz continuous.

Stochastic Parameterization: Towards a new view of Weather and Climate Models

The last decade has seen the success of stochastic parameterizations in short-term, medium-range and seasonal forecasts: operational weather centers now routinely use stochastic parameterization schemes to better represent model inadequacy and improve the quantification of forecast uncertainty. Developed initially for numerical weather prediction, the inclusion of stochastic parameterizations not only provides better estimates of uncertainty, but it is also extremely promising for reducing longstanding climate biases and relevant for determining the climate response to external forcing. This article highlights recent developments from different research groups which show that the stochastic representation of unresolved processes in the atmosphere, oceans, land surface and cryosphere of comprehensive weather and climate models (a) gives rise to more reliable probabilistic forecasts of weather and climate and (b) reduces systematic model bias. We make a case that the use of mathematically stringent methods for the derivation of stochastic dynamic equations will lead to substantial improvements in our ability to accurately simulate weather and climate at all scales. Recent work in mathematics, statistical mechanics and turbulence is reviewed, its relevance for the climate problem demonstrated, and future research directions outlined.

Existence of Lévy's area and pathwise integration

Rough path analysis can be developed using the concept of controlled paths, and with respect to a topology in which Lévy's area plays a role. For vectors of irregular paths we investigate the relationship between the property of being controlled and the existence of associated Lévy areas. For two paths, one of which is controlled by the other, a pathwise construction of the Lévy area and therefore of mutual stochastic integrals is possible. If the existence of quadratic variation along a sequence of partitions is guaranteed, this leads us to a study of the pathwise change of variable (Itô) formula in the spirit of Föllmer, from the perspective of controlled paths.

A note on the Malliavin-Sobolev spaces

In this paper, we provide a strong formulation of the stochastic G{â}teaux differentiability in order to study the sharpness of a new characterization, introduced in [6], of the Malliavin-Sobolev spaces. We also give a new internal structure of these spaces in the sense of sets inclusion.

A Fourier approach to pathwise stochastic integration

We develop a Fourier approach to rough path integration, based on the series decomposition of continuous functions in terms of Schauder functions. Our approach is rather elementary, the main ingredient being a simple commutator estimate, and it leads to recursive algorithms for the calculation of pathwise stochastic integrals, both of Itô and of Stratonovich type. We apply it to solve stochastic differential equations in a pathwise manner.

Dimensional reduction in nonlinear filtering: A homogenization approach

We propose a homogenized filter for multiscale signals, which allows us to reduce the dimension of the system. We prove that the nonlinear filter converges to our homogenized filter with rate $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$. This is achieved by a suitable asymptotic expansion of the dual of the Zakai equation, and by probabilistically representing the correction terms with the help of BDSDEs.

Existence, Uniqueness and Regularity of Decoupling Fields to Multidimensional Fully Coupled FBSDEs

We develop an existence, uniqueness and regularity theory for general multidimensional strongly coupled FBSDE using so called decoupling fields. We begin with a local result and extend it to a global theory via concatenation. The cornerstone of the global theory is the so called maximal interval which is, roughly speaking, the largest interval on which reasonable solutions exist. A method to verify that the maximal interval is the whole interval, for problems in which this is conjectured, is proposed. As part of our study of the regularity of solutions constructed we show variational differentiability under Lipschitz assumptions. Extra emphasis is put on the more special Markovian case in which assumptions on the Lipschitz continuity for the FBSDE can be weakened to local ones, and additional regularity properties emerge.
