Rings without a Gorenstein analogue of the Govorov-Lazard Theorem

It was proved by Beligiannis and Krause that over certain Artin algebras, there are Gorenstein flat modules which are not direct limits of finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules. That is, these algebras have no Gorenstein analogue of the Govorov-Lazard Theorem. We show that, in fact, there is a large class of rings without such an analogue. Namely, let R be a commutative local noetherian ring. Then the analogue fails for R if it has a dualizing complex, is henselian, not Gorenstein, and has a finitely generated Gorenstein projective module which is not free. The proof is based on a theory of Gorenstein projective (pre)envelopes. We show, among other things, that the finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules form an enveloping class in mod R if and only if R is Gorenstein or has the property that each finitely generated Gorenstein projective module is free. This is analogous to a recent result on covers by Christensen, Piepmeyer, Striuli, and Takahashi, and their methods are an important input to our work.

On the relation between cluster and classical tilting

Let D be a triangulated category with a cluster tilting subcategory U. The quotient category D/U is abelian; suppose that it has finite global dimension. We show that projection from D to D/U sends cluster tilting subcategories of D to support tilting subcategories of D/U, and that, in turn, support tilting subcategories of D/U can be lifted uniquely to maximal 1-orthogonal subcategories of D.

Some relative stable categories are compactly generated

Let G be a finite group. The stable module category of G has been applied extensively in group representation theory. In particular, it has been used to great effect that it is a triangulated category which is compactly generated. Let H be a subgroup of G. It is possible to define a stable module category of G relative to H. It too is a triangulated category, but no non-trivial examples have been known where this relative stable category was compactly generated. We show here that the relative stable category is compactly generated if the group algebra of H has finite representation type. In characteristic p, this is equivalent to the Sylow p-subgroups of H being cyclic.

Calabi-Yau categories and Poincare duality spaces

The singular cochain complex of a topological space is a classical object. It is a Differential Graded algebra which has been studied intensively with a range of methods, not least within rational homotopy theory. More recently, the tools of Auslander-Reiten theory have also been applied to the singular cochain complex. One of the highlights is that by these methods, each Poincare duality space gives rise to a Calabi-Yau category. This paper is a review of the theory.

Stable Calabi-Yau dimension for finite type selfinjective algebras

We show that the Calabi-Yau dimension of the stable module category of a selfinjective algebra of finite representation type is determined by the action of the Nakayama and suspension functors on objects. Our arguments are based on recent results of C. Amiot, and hence apply more generally to triangulated categories having only finitely many indecomposable objects.

Homological properties of cochain Differential Graded algebras

Consider a local chain Differential Graded algebra, such as the singular chain complex of a pathwise connected topological group. In two previous papers, a number of homological results were proved for such an algebra: An Amplitude Inequality, an Auslander-Buchsbaum Equality, and a Gap Theorem. These were inspired by homological ring theory. By the so-called looking glass principle, one would expect that analogous results exist for simply connected cochain Differential Graded algebras, such as the singular cochain complex of a simply connected topological space. Indeed, this paper establishes such analogous results.

Reflecting recollements

A recollement describes one triangulated category T as "glued together" from two others, S and U. The definition is not symmetrical in S and U, but this note shows how S and U can be interchanged when T has a Serre functor.

Quotients of cluster categories

Higher cluster categories were recently introduced as a generalization of cluster categories. This paper shows that in Dynkin types A and D, half of all higher cluster categories are actually just quotients of cluster categories. The other half can be obtained as quotients of 2-cluster categories, the "lowest" type of higher cluster categories. Hence, in Dynkin types A and D, all higher cluster phenomena are implicit in cluster categories and 2-cluster categories. In contrast, the same is not true in Dynkin type E.

Covers, preenvelopes, and purity

We show that if a class of modules is closed under pure quotients, then it is precovering if and only if it is covering, and this happens if and only if it is closed under direct sums. This is inspired by a dual result by Rada and Saor\'ın. We also show that if a class of modules contains the ground ring and is closed under extensions, direct sums, pure submodules, and pure quotients, then it forms the first half of a so-called perfect cotorsion pair as introduced by Salce; this is stronger than being covering. Some applications are given to concrete classes of modules such as kernels of homological functors and torsion free modules in a torsion pair.

Auslander-Reiten triangles in subcategories

This paper introduces Auslander-Reiten triangles in subcategories of triangulated categories. The main theorem of the paper shows that there is a close connection with covers and envelopes, also known as minimal right- and left-approximations. Namely, under suitable assumptions, if M is an object in the subcategory C of the triangulated category T and X --> Y --> M --> is an Auslander-Reiten triangle in T, then there is an Auslander-Reiten triangle K --> L --> M --> in C if and only if there is a C-cover of the form K --> X. The main theorem is used to give a new proof of the existence of Auslander-Reiten sequences over finite dimensional algebras.

Amplitude inequalities for Differential Graded modules

Differential Graded Algebras can be studied through their Differential Graded modules. Among these, the compact ones attract particular attention. This paper proves that over a suitable chain Differential Graded Algebra R, each compact Differential Graded module M satisfies amp M >= amp R, where amp denotes amplitude which is defined in a straightforward way in terms of the homology of a DG module. In other words, the homology of each compact DG module M is at least as long as the homology of R itself. Conversely, DG modules with shorter homology than R are not compact, and so in general, there exist DG modules with finitely generated homology which are not compact. Hence, in contrast to ring theory, it makes no sense to define finite global dimension of DGAs by the condition that each DG module with finitely generated homology must be compact.

Wrong way recollement for schemes

A recollement of triangulated categories makes it possible to view one such category as being glued together from two others. The prototypical example is that D(X), a suitable derived category of sheaves on the topological space X, has a recollement in terms of D(Z) and D(U) when Z is a closed subset of X and U is the open complement. This note gives a different, "wrong way" recollement in the scheme case.

Finite Cohen-Macaulay type and smooth non-commutative schemes

A commutative local Cohen-Macaulay ring R of finite Cohen-Macaulay type is known to be an isolated singularity; that is, Spec(R)-m is smooth. This paper proves a non-commutative analogue. Namely, if A is a (non-commutative) graded AS Cohen-Macaulay algebra which is FBN and has finite Cohen-Macaulay type, then the non-commutative projective scheme determined by A is smooth.

Symmetry theorems for Ext vanishing

It was proved by Avramov and Buchweitz that if A is a commutative local complete intersection ring with finitely generated modules M and N, then the Ext groups between M and N vanish from some step if and only if the Ext groups between N and M vanish from some step. This paper shows that the same is true under the weaker conditions that A is Gorenstein and that M and N have finite complete intersection dimension. The result is also proved if A is Gorenstein and has finite Cohen-Macaulay type. Similar results are given for two types of non-commutative rings: Frobenius algebras and complete semi-local algebras.

Recollement for Differential Graded Algebras

A recollement of triangulated categories describes one such category as being "glued together" from two others. This paper gives a precise criterion for the existence of a recollement of the derived category of a Differential Graded Algebra in terms of two other such categories.

Existence of Gorenstein projective resolutions

Gorenstein rings are important to mathematical areas as diverse as algebraic geometry, where they encode information about singularities of spaces, and homotopy theory, through the concept of model categories. In consequence, the study of Gorenstein rings has led to the advent of a whole branch of homological algebra, known as Gorenstein homological algebra. This paper solves one of the open problems of Gorenstein homological algebra by showing that so-called Gorenstein projective resolutions exist over quite general rings, thereby enabling the definition of a Gorenstein version of derived functors. An application is given to the theory of Tate cohomology.

Cohen-Macaulay injective, projective, and flat dimension

We define three new homological dimensions - Cohen-Macaulay injective, projective, and flat dimension - which inhabit a theory similar to that of classical injective, projective, and flat dimension. Finiteness of the new dimensions characterizes Cohen-Macaulay rings with dualizing modules.

Semi-dualizing modules and related Gorenstein homological dimensions

A semi-dualizing module over a commutative noetherian ring A is a finitely generated module C with RHom_A(C,C) \simeq A in the derived category D(A). We show how each such module gives rise to three new homological dimensions which we call C-Gorenstein projective, C-Gorenstein injective, and C-Gorenstein flat dimension, and investigate the properties of these dimensions.
