Inhomogeneous minima of mixed signature lattices

We establish an explicit upper bound for the Euclidean minimum of a number field which depends, in a precise manner, only on its discriminant and the number of real and complex embeddings. Such bounds were shown to exist by Davenport and Swinnerton-Dyer. In the case of totally real fields, an optimal bound was conjectured by Minkowski and it is proved for fields of small degree. In this note we develop methods of McMullen in the case of mixed signature in order to get explicit bounds for the Euclidean minimum.

A non-hypergeometric E-function

We answer in the negative Siegel's question whether all E-functions are polynomial expressions in hypergeometric E-functions. Namely, we show that if an irreducible differential operator of order three annihilates an E-function in the hypergeometric class, then the singularities of its Fourier transform are constrained to satisfy a symmetry property that generically does not hold. The proof relies on André's theory of E-operators and Katz's computation of the Galois group of hypergeometric differential equations.

Algebraic Cogroups and Nori-Motives

We introduce the notion of algebraic cogroup over a subfield $k$ of the complex numbers, and use it to prove that every Nori motive over $k$ is isomorphic to a quotient of a motive of the form $H^n(X, Y)(i)$.

On the Mumford-Tate conjecture for 1-motives

We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.

On the second Tate-Shafarevich group of a 1-motive

We prove finiteness results for Tate--Shafarevich groups in degree 2 associated with 1--motives, rely them to Leopoldt's conjecture, and present an example of a semiabelian variety with an infinite Tate--Shafarevich group in degree 2. We also establish an arithmetic duality theorem for 1--motives over number fields which complements earlier results of Harari and Szamuely in this direction.

Detecting linear dependence on a simple abelian variety

Let A be a geometrically simple abelian variety over a number field k, let X be a subgroup of A(k) and let P be an element of A(k). We prove that if P belongs to X modulo almost all primes of k then P already belongs to X.

Detecting linear dependence on a semiabelian variety

This paper has been withdrawn by the author. The statement of the Main Theorem but is wrong in general, there have been provided counterexamples. The main theorem only holds conditionally, under the finiteness statement of theorem 2.8.
