A Rough Path Perspective on Renormalization

We develop the algebraic theory of rough path translation. Particular attention is given to the case of branched rough paths, whose underlying algebraic structure (Connes-Kreimer, Grossman-Larson) makes it a useful model case of a regularity structure in the sense of Hairer. Pre-Lie structures are seen to play a fundamental rule which allow a direct understanding of the translated (i.e. renormalized) equation under consideration. This construction is also novel with regard to the algebraic renormalization theory for regularity structures due to Bruned--Hairer--Zambotti (2016), the links with which are discussed in detail.

Multiscale systems, homogenization, and rough paths

In recent years, substantial progress was made towards understanding convergence of fast-slow deterministic systems to stochastic differential equations. In contrast to more classical approaches, the assumptions on the fast flow are very mild. We survey the origins of this theory and then revisit and improve the analysis of Kelly-Melbourne [Ann. Probab. Volume 44, Number 1 (2016), 479-520], taking into account recent progress in $p$-variation and càdlàg rough path theory.

Malliavin Calculus for regularity structures: the case of gPAM

Malliavin calculus is implemented in the context of [M. Hairer, A theory of regularity structures, Invent. Math. 2014]. This involves some constructions of independent interest, notably an extension of the structure which accomodates a robust, and purely deterministic, translation operator, in $L^2$-directions, between "models". In the concrete context of the generalized parabolic Anderson model in 2D - one of the singular SPDEs discussed in the afore-mentioned article - we establish existence of a density at positive times.

Canonical RDEs and general semimartingales as rough paths

In the spirit of Marcus canonical stochastic differential equations, we study a similar notion of rough differential equations (RDEs), notably dropping the assumption of continuity prevalent in the rough path literature. A new metric is exhibited in which the solution map is a continuous function of the driving rough path and a so-called path function, which directly models the effect of the jump on the system. In a second part, we show that general multidimensional semimartingales admit canonically defined rough path lifts. An extension of Lépingle's BDG inequality to this setting is given, and in turn leads to a number of novel limit theorems for semimartingale driven differential equations, both in law and in probability, conveniently phrased via Kurtz-Protter's uniformly-controlled-variations (UCV) condition. A number of examples illustrate the scope of our results.

Short-time near-the-money skew in rough fractional volatility models

We consider rough stochastic volatility models where the driving noise of volatility has fractional scaling, in the "rough" regime of Hurst parameter $H < 1/2$. This regime recently attracted a lot of attention both from the statistical and option pricing point of view. With focus on the latter, we sharpen the large deviation results of Forde-Zhang (2017) in a way that allows us to zoom-in around the money while maintaining full analytical tractability. More precisely, this amounts to proving higher order moderate deviation estimates, only recently introduced in the option pricing context. This in turn allows us to push the applicability range of known at-the-money skew approximation formulae from CLT type log-moneyness deviations of order $t^{1/2}$ (recent works of Alòs, León & Vives and Fukasawa) to the wider moderate deviations regime.

A regularity structure for rough volatility

A new paradigm recently emerged in financial modelling: rough (stochastic) volatility, first observed by Gatheral et al. in high-frequency data, subsequently derived within market microstructure models, also turned out to capture parsimoniously key stylized facts of the entire implied volatility surface, including extreme skews that were thought to be outside the scope of stochastic volatility. On the mathematical side, Markovianity and, partially, semi-martingality are lost. In this paper we show that Hairer's regularity structures, a major extension of rough path theory, which caused a revolution in the field of stochastic partial differential equations, also provides a new and powerful tool to analyze rough volatility models.

Differential equations driven by rough paths with jumps

We develop the rough path counterpart of Itô stochastic integration and - differential equations driven by general semimartingales. This significantly enlarges the classes of (Itô / forward) stochastic differential equations treatable with pathwise methods. A number of applications are discussed.

Rough path metrics on a Besov--Nikolskii type scale

It is known, since the seminal work [T. Lyons, Differential equations driven by rough signals, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana, 14 (1998)], that the solution map associated to a controlled differential equation is locally Lipschitz continuous in $q$-variation resp. $1/q$-Hölder type metrics on the space of rough paths, for any regularity $1/q \in (0,1]$. We extend this to a new class of Besov-Nikolskii-type metrics, with arbitrary regularity $1/q\in (0,1]$ and integrability $p\in [ q,\infty ]$, where the case $p\in \{ q,\infty \} $ corresponds to the known cases. Interestingly, the result is obtained as consequence of known $q$-variation rough path estimates.

Examples of renormalized SDEs

We demonstrate two examples of stochastic processes whose lifts to geometric rough paths require a renormalisation procedure to obtain convergence in rough path topologies. Our first example involves a physical Brownian motion subject to a magnetic force which dominates over the friction forces in the small mass limit. Our second example involves a lead-lag process of discretised fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in (1/4,1/2)$, in which the stochastic area captures the quadratic variation of the process. In both examples, a renormalisation of the second iterated integral is needed to ensure convergence of the processes, and we comment on how this procedure mimics negative renormalisation arising in the study of singular SPDEs and regularity structures.

The enhanced Sanov theorem and propagation of chaos

We establish a Sanov type large deviation principle for an ensemble of interacting Brownian rough paths. As application a large deviations for the ($k$-layer, enhanced) empirical measure of weakly interacting diffusions is obtained. This in turn implies a propagation of chaos result in rough path spaces and allows for a robust subsequent analysis of the particle system and its McKean-Vlasov type limit, as shown in two corollaries.

On the regularity of SLE trace

We revisit regularity of SLE trace, for all $κ\neq 8$, and establish Besov regularity under the usual half-space capacity parametrization. With an embedding theorem of Garsia--Rodemich--Rumsey type, we obtain finite moments (and hence almost surely) optimal variation regularity with index $\min (1 + κ/ 8, 2) $, improving on previous works of Werness, and also (optimal) Hölder regularity à la Johansson Viklund and Lawler.

From rough path estimates to multilevel Monte Carlo

New classes of stochastic differential equations can now be studied using rough path theory (e.g. Lyons et al. [LCL07] or Friz--Hairer [FH14]). In this paper we investigate, from a numerical analysis point of view, stochastic differential equations driven by Gaussian noise in the aforementioned sense. Our focus lies on numerical implementations, and more specifically on the saving possible via multilevel methods. Our analysis relies on a subtle combination of pathwise estimates, Gaussian concentration, and multilevel ideas. Numerical examples are given which both illustrate and confirm our findings.

Eikonal equations and pathwise solutions to fully non-linear SPDEs

We study the existence and uniqueness of the stochastic viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, possibly degenerate, second order stochastic pde with quadratic Hamiltonians associated to a Riemannian geometry. The results are new and extend the class of equations studied so far by the last two authors.

The Jain-Monrad criterion for rough paths and applications to random Fourier series and non-Markovian Hörmander theory

We discuss stochastic calculus for large classes of Gaussian processes, based on rough path analysis. Our key condition is a covariance measure structure combined with a classical criterion due to Jain and Monrad [Ann. Probab. 11 (1983) 46-57]. This condition is verified in many examples, even in absence of explicit expressions for the covariance or Volterra kernels. Of special interest are random Fourier series, with covariance given as Fourier series itself, and we formulate conditions directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients. We also establish convergence and rates of convergence in rough path metrics of approximations to such random Fourier series. An application to SPDE is given. Our criterion also leads to an embedding result for Cameron-Martin paths and complementary Young regularity (CYR) of the Cameron-Martin space and Gaussian sample paths. CYR is known to imply Malliavin regularity and also Itô-like probabilistic estimates for stochastic integrals (resp., stochastic differential equations) despite their (rough) pathwise construction. At last, we give an application in the context of non-Markovian Hörmander theory.

On the existence of SLE trace: finite energy drivers and non-constant $κ$

Existence of Loewner trace is revisited. We identify finite energy paths (the "skeleton of Wiener measure") as natural class of regular drivers for which we find simple and natural estimates in terms of their (Cameron--Martin) norm. Secondly, now dealing with potentially rough drivers, a representation of the derivative of the (inverse of the) Loewner flow is given in terms of a rough- and then pathwise Föllmer integral. Assuming the driver within a class of Itô-processes, an exponential martingale argument implies existence of trace. In contrast to classical (exact) SLE computations, our arguments are well adapted to perturbations, such as non-constant $κ$ (assuming $<2$ for technical reasons) and additional finite-energy drift terms.

Stochastic partial differential equations: a rough path view

We discuss regular and weak solutions to rough partial differential equations (RPDEs), thereby providing a (rough path-)wise view on important classes of SPDEs. In contrast to many previous works on RPDEs, our definition gives honest meaning to RPDEs as integral equation, based on which we are able to obtain existence, uniqueness and stability results. The case of weak "rough" forward equations, may be seen as robustification of the (measure-valued) Zakai equation in the rough path sense. Feynman-Kac representation for RPDEs, in formal analogy to similar classical results in SPDE theory, play an important role.

Stochastic scalar conservation laws driven by rough paths

We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic scalar conservation laws with joint space-time transport noise and affine-linear noise driven by a geometric p-rough path. In particular, stability of the solutions with respect to the driving rough path is obtained, leading to a robust approach to stochastic scalar conservation laws. As immediate corollaries we obtain support theorems, large deviation results and the generation of a random dynamical system.
