A new framework for studying spherically symmetric static solutions in f(R) gravity

We develop a new covariant formalism to treat spherically symmetric spacetimes in metric} f(R) theories of gravity. Using this formalism we derive the general equations for a static and spherically symmetric metric in a general f(R)-gravity. These equations are used to determine the conditions for which the Schwarzschild metric is the only vacuum solution with vanishing Ricci scalar. We also show that our general framework provides a clear way of showing that the Schwarzschild solution is not a unique static spherically symmetric solution, providing some incite on how the current form of Birkhoff's theorem breaks down for these theories.

A Geometrical Approach to Strong Gravitational Lensing in f(R) Gravity

We present a framework for the study of lensing in spherically symmetric spacetimes within the context of f(R) gravity. Equations for the propagation of null geodesics, together with an expression for the bending angle are derived for any f(R) theory and then applied to an exact spherically symmetric solution of R^n gravity. We find that for this case more bending is expected for R^n gravity theories in comparison to GR and is dependent on the value of n and the value of distance of closest approach of the incident null geodesic.

Power-law cosmic expansion in f(R) gravity models

We show that within the class of f(R) gravity theories, FLRW power-law perfect fluid solutions only exist for R^n gravity. This significantly restricts the set of exact cosmological solutions which have similar properties to what is found in standard General Relativity.

On the co-existence of matter dominated and accelerating solutions in f(G)-gravity

Working within the theory of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we show that FLRW--like power--law solutions only exist for a very special class of f(G)theories. Furthermore, we point out that any transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion must pass through G=0, and no function f(G) that is differentiable at this point can admit both a decelerating power--law solution and any accelerating solution. This strongly constrains the cosmological viability of f(G)-gravity, since it may not be possible to obtain an expansion history of the universe which is compatible with observations. We explain why the same issue does not occur in f(R)-gravity and discuss possible caveats for the case of f(G)-gravity.

Unifying the study of background dynamics and perturbations in $f(R)$-gravity

In this paper we show how the covariant gauge invariant equations for the evolution of scalar, vector and tensor perturbations for a generic $f(R)$-gravity theory can be recast in order to exploit the power of dynamical system methodology. In this way, recent results describing the dynamics of the background FRW model can be easily combined with these equations to reveal important details pertaining to the evolution of cosmological models in fourth order gravity.

A characteristic signature of fourth order gravity

We present for the first time the complete matter power spectrum for $R^n$ gravity which has been derived from the fourth order scalar perturbation equations. This leads to the discovery of a characteristic signature of fourth order gravity in the matter power spectrum, the details of which have not seen before in other studies in this area and therefore provides a crucial test for fourth order gravity on cosmological scales.

Dynamics of f(R)-cosmologies containing Einstein static models

We study the dynamics of homogeneous isotropic FRW cosmologies with positive spatial curvature in $f(R)$-gravity, paying special attention to the existence of Einstein static models and only study forms of $f(R)=R^n$ for which these static models have been shown to exist. We construct a compact state space and identify past and future attractors of the system and recover a previously discovered future attractor corresponding to an expanding accelerating model. We also discuss the existence of universes which have both a past and future bounce, a phenomenon which is absent in General Relativity.

A detailed analysis of structure growth in $f(R)$ theories of gravity

We investigate the connection between dark energy and fourth order gravity by analyzing the behavior of scalar perturbations around a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The evolution equations for scalar perturbation are derived using the covariant and gauge invariant approach and applied to two widely studied $f(R)$ gravity models. The structure of the general fourth order perturbation equations and the analysis of scalar perturbations lead to the discovery of a characteristic signature of fourth order gravity in the matter power spectrum, the details of which have not seen before in other works in this area. This could provide a crucial test for fourth order gravity on cosmological scales.

The Existence of Einstein Static Universes and their Stability in Fourth order Theories of Gravity

We investigate whether or not an Einstein Static universe is a solution to the cosmological equations in $f(R)$ gravity. It is found that only one class of $f(R)$ theories admits an Einstein Static model, and that this class is neutrally stable with respect to vector and tensor perturbations for all equations of state on all scales. Scalar perturbations are only stable on all scales if the matter fluid equation of state satisfies $c_s^2>\frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{6}\approx 0.21$. This result is remarkably similar to the GR case, where it was found that the Einstein Static model is stable for $c_s^2>{1/5}$.

Compactifying the state space for alternative theories of gravity

In this paper we address important issues surrounding the choice of variables when performing a dynamical systems analysis of alternative theories of gravity. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of compactifying the state space, and illustrate this using two examples. We first show how to define a compact state space for the class of LRS Bianchi type I models in $R^n$-gravity and compare to a non--compact expansion--normalised approach. In the second example we consider the flat Friedmann matter subspace of the previous example, and compare the compact analysis to studies where non-compact non--expansion--normalised variables were used. In both examples we comment on the existence of bouncing or recollapsing orbits as well as the existence of static models.

Dynamical systems analysis of anisotropic cosmologies in $R^n$-gravity

In this paper we study the dynamics of {\it orthogonal spatially homogeneous} Bianchi cosmologies in $R^n$-gravity. We construct a compact state space by dividing the state space into different sectors. We perform a detailed analysis of the cosmological behaviour in terms of the parameter $n$, determining all the equilibrium points, their stability and corresponding cosmological evolution. In particular, the appropriately compactified state space allows us to investigate static and bouncing solutions. We find no Einstein static solutions, but there do exist cosmologies with bounce behaviours. We also investigate the isotropisation of these models and find that all isotropic points are flat Friedmann like.

An analysis of the shear dynamics in Bianchi I cosmologies with $R^n$-gravity

We consider the case of $R^n$-gravity and perform a detailed analysis of the dynamics in Bianchi I cosmologies which exhibit {\it local rotational symmetry} (LRS). We find exact solutions and study their behaviour and stability in terms of the values of the parameter $n$. In particular, we found a set of cosmic histories in which the universe is initially isotropic, then develops shear anisotropies which approaches a constant value.

The evolution of tensor perturbations in scalar-tensor theories of gravity

The evolution equations for tensor perturbations in a generic scalar tensor theory of gravity are presented. Exact solution are given for a specific class of theories and Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker backgrounds. In these cases it is shown that, although the evolution of tensor models depends on the choice of parameters of the theory, no amplification is possible if the gravitational interaction is attractive.

Gauge invariant perturbations of Scalar-Tensor Cosmologies: The vacuum case

The covariant gauge invariant perturbation theory of scalar cosmological perturbations is developed for a general Scalar-Tensor Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology in a vacuum. The perturbation equations are then solved exactly in the long wavelength limit for a specific coupling, potential and background. Differences with the minimally coupled case are briefly discussed.

Bounce Conditions in f(R) Cosmologies

We investigate the conditions for a bounce to occur in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies for the class of fourth order gravity theories. The general bounce criterion is determined and constraints on the parameters of three specific models are given in order to obtain bounces solutions. It is found that unlike the case of General Relativity, a bounce appears to be possible in open and flat cosmologies.

Are braneworlds born isotropic?

It has recently been suggested that an isotropic singularity may be a generic feature of brane cosmologies, even in the inhomogeneous case. Using the covariant and gauge-invariant approach we present a detailed analysis of linear perturbations of the isotropic model ${\cal F}_b$ which is a past attractor in the phase space of homogeneous Bianchi models on the brane. We find that for matter with an equation of state parameter $γ> 1$, the dimensionless variables representing generic anisotropic and inhomogeneous perturbations decay as $t\to 0$, showing that the model ${\cal F}_b$ is asymptotically stable in the past. We conclude that brane universes are born with isotropy naturally built-in, contrary to standard cosmology. The observed large-scale homogeneity and isotropy of the universe can therefore be explained as a consequence of the initial conditions if the brane-world paradigm represents a description of the very early universe.

Large-scale perturbations on the brane and the isotropy of the cosmological singularity

We present the complete set of propagation and constraint equations for the kinematic and non-local first order quantities which describe general linear inhomogeneous and anisotropic perturbations of a flat FRW braneworld with vanishing cosmological constant and decompose them in the standard way into their scalar, vector and tensor contributions. A detailed analysis of the perturbation dynamics is performed using dimensionless variables that are specially tailored for the different regimes of interest; namely, the low energy GR regime, the high energy regime and the dark energy regime. Tables are presented for the evolution of all the physical quantities, making it easy to do a detailed comparison of the past asymptotic behaviour of the perturbations of these models. We find results that exactly match those obtained in the analysis of the spatially inhomogeneous $G_{2}$ braneworld cosmologies presented recently; i.e., that isotropization towards the ${\cal F}_b$ model occurs for $γ> 4/3$.
