On the Causality and Stability of the Relativistic Diffusion Equation

This paper examines the mathematical properties of the relativistic diffusion equation. The peculiar solution which Hiscock and Lindblom identified as an instability is shown to emerge from an ill-posed initial value problem. These do not meet the mathematical conditions required for realistic physical problems and can not serve as an argument against the relativistic hydrodynamics of Landau and Lifshitz.

Uniqueness in Relativistic Hydrodynamics

The choice of the 4-velocity in the relativistic hydrodynamics proposed by Landau and Lifshitz is demonstrated to be the only one satisfying all general principles. Especially the far more widely adopted Eckart choice has to be abandoned.

3^He A-B Transition in Finite Geometries

The measured rate of the 3^He A-B transition depends on the diameter of the experimental cell. Theoretically, this can only be explained by a direct drag on the interface exerted by the lateral walls, leading to a pressure discontinuity across the interface. This has not been considered before, either here or in similar circumstances. The general hydrodynamic theory that includes the influence of finite geometries is presented.

Dissipation of the 3^He A-B Transition

A rigorous hydrodynamic theory of the A-B transition is presented. All dissipative processes are considered. At low interface velocities, those occurring on hydrodynamic length scales, not considered hitherto, are most probably the dominant ones.
