The Stacey-Roberts Lemma for Banach Manifolds

The Stacey-Roberts lemma states that a surjective submersion between finite-dimensional manifolds gives rise to a submersion on infinite-dimensional manifolds of smooth mappings by pushforward. This result is foundational for many constructions in infinite-dimensional differential geometry such as the construction of Lie groupoids of smooth mappings. We generalise the Stacey-Roberts lemma to Banach manifolds which admit smooth partitions of unity. The new approach also remedies an error in the original proof of the result for the purely finite-dimensional setting.

A Topologically Enriched Probability Monad on the Cartesian Closed Category of CGWH Spaces

Probability monads on categories of topological spaces are classical objects of study in the categorical approach to probability theory, with important applications in the semantics of probabilistic programming languages. We construct a probability monad on the category of compactly generated weakly Hausdorff (CGWH) spaces, a (if not the) standard choice of convenient category of topological spaces. Because a general version of the Riesz representation theorem adapted to this setting plays a fundamental role in our construction, we name it the Riesz probability monad. We show that the Riesz probability monad is a simultaneous extension of the classical Radon and Giry monads that is topologically enriched. Topological enrichment corresponds to a strengthened continuous mapping theorem (in the sense of probability theory). In addition, restricting the Riesz probability monad to the Cartesian closed subcategory of weakly Hausdorff quotients of countably based (QCB) spaces results in a probability monad which is strongly affine, ensuring that the notions of independence and determinism interact as we would expect.

How an action that stabilizes a bundle gerbe gives rise to a Lie group extension

Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a bundle gerbe with connection on a smooth manifold $M$, and let $\rho: G \rightarrow \operatorname{Diff}(M)$ be a smooth action of a Fr\'echet--Lie group $G$ on $M$ that preserves the isomorphism class of $\mathcal{G}$. In this setting, we obtain an abelian extension of $G$ that consists of pairs $(g,A)$, where $g \in G$, and $A$ is an isomorphism from $\rho_{g}^{*}\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{G}$. We equip this group with a natural structure of abelian Fr\'{e}chet--Lie group extension of $G$, under the assumption that the first integral homology of $M$ is finitely generated. As an application, we construct the universal central extension (in the category of Fr\'echet--Lie groups) of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic surface. As an intermediate step, we obtain a central extension of the group of exact volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 3-manifold whose corresponding Lie algebra extension is conjectured to be universal.

A Fermionic Grunsky operator

To a conformal map $f$ from the disk $\mathbb{D}$ into the complex plane onto a domain with rectifiable Ahlfors-regular boundary, we associate a new kind of Grunsky operator on the Hardy space of the unit disk. This is analogous to the classical Grunsky operator, which itself can be viewed as an operator on Bergman or Dirichlet space. We show that the pull-back of the Smirnov space of the complement of $f(\mathbb{D})$ by $f$ is the graph of the Grunsky operator. We also characterize those domains with rectifiable Ahlfors-regular boundaries such that the Grunsky operator is Hilbert-Schmidt. In particular, we show that if the Grunsky operator is Hilbert-Schmidt, then $f(\mathbb{D})$ is a Weil-Petersson quasidisk. The formulations of the results and proofs make essential use of a geometric treatment of Smirnov space as a space of half-order differentials.

A representation of the string 2-group

We construct a representation of the string 2-group on a 2-vector space, aiming to establish it as the categorification of the spinor representation. Our model for 2-vector spaces is based on the Morita bicategory of von Neumann algebras, and we specifically represent the string 2-group on the hyperfinite type III_1 factor.

Grassmannians of Lagrangian Polarizations

This paper is an introduction to polarizations in the symplectic and orthogonal settings. They arise in association to a triple of compatible structures on a real vector space, consisting of an inner product, a symplectic form, and a complex structure. A polarization is a decomposition of the complexified vector space into the eigenspaces of the complex structure; this information is equivalent to the specification of a compatible triple. When either a symplectic form or inner product is fixed, one obtains a Grassmannian of polarizations. We give an exposition of this circle of ideas, emphasizing the symmetry of the symplectic and orthogonal settings, and allowing the possibility that the underlying vector spaces are infinite-dimensional. This introduction would be useful for those interested in applications of polarizations to representation theory, loop groups, complex geometry, moduli spaces, quantization, and conformal field theory.

The stringor bundle

We set up a framework of 2-Hilbert bundles, which allows to rigorously define the "stringor bundle", a higher differential geometric object anticipated by Stolz and Teichner in an unpublished preprint about 20 years ago. Our framework includes an associated bundle construction, allowing us to associate a 2-Hilbert bundle with a principal 2-bundle and a unitary representation of its structure 2-group. We prove that the Stolz-Teichner stringor bundle is canonically isomorphic to the 2-Hilbert bundle obtained from applying our associated bundle construction to a string structure on a manifold and the stringor representation of the string 2-group that we discovered in earlier work. This establishes a perfect analogy to spin manifolds, representations of the spin groups, and spinor bundles.

The insidious bicategory of algebra bundles

In this paper we construct a bicategory of (super) algebra bundles over a smooth manifold, where the 1-morphisms are bundles of bimodules. The main point is that naive definitions of bimodule bundles will not lead to a well-defined composition law in such a bicategory, at least not if non-invertible bimodules and non-semisimple algebras are desired. This problem has not been addressed so far in the literature. We develop a complete solution, and also address symmetric monoidal structures as well as the corresponding questions of dualizability.

2-vector bundles

We develop a ready-to-use comprehensive theory for (super) 2-vector bundles over smooth manifolds. It is based on the bicategory of (super) algebras, bimodules, and intertwiners as a model for 2-vector spaces. We discuss symmetric monoidal structures and the corresponding notions of dualizability, and we derive a classification in terms of Cech cohomology with values in a crossed module. One important feature of our 2-vector bundles is that they contain bundle gerbes as well as ordinary algebra bundles as full sub-bicategories, and hence provide a unifying framework for these so far distinct objects. We provide several examples of isomorphisms between bundle gerbes and algebra bundles, coming from representation theory, twisted K-theory, and spin geometry.

Connes fusion of spinors on loop space

The loop space of a string manifold supports an infinite-dimensional Fock space bundle, which is an analog of the spinor bundle on a spin manifold. This spinor bundle on loop space appears in the description of 2-dimensional sigma models as the bundle of states over the configuration space of the superstring. We construct a product on this bundle covering the fusion of loops, i.e., the merging of two loops along a common segment. For this purpose, we exhibit it as a bundle of bimodules over a certain von Neumann algebra bundle, and realize our product fibrewise using the Connes fusion of von Neumann bimodules. Our main technique is to establish a novel relation between string structures, loop fusion, and the Connes fusion of Fock spaces. The fusion product on the spinor bundle on loop space was proposed by Stolz and Teichner as a part of a programme to explore the relation between generalized cohomology theories, functorial field theories, and index theory. It is related to the pair of pants worldsheet of the superstring, to the extension of the corresponding smooth functorial field theory down to the point, and to a higher-categorical bundle on the underlying string manifold, the stringor bundle.

Smooth Fock bundles, and spinor bundles on loop space

We address the construction of smooth bundles of fermionic Fock spaces, a problem that appears frequently in fermionic gauge theories. Our main motivation is the spinor bundle on the free loop space of a string manifold, a structure anticipated by Killingback, with a construction outlined by Stolz-Teichner. We develop a general framework for constructing smooth Fock bundles, and obtain as an application a complete and well-founded construction of spinor bundles on loop space.

Fusion of implementers for spinors on the circle

We consider the space of odd spinors on the circle, and a decomposition into spinors supported on either the top or on the bottom half of the circle. If an operator preserves this decomposition, and acts on the bottom half in the same way as a second operator acts on the top half, then the fusion of both operators is a third operator acting on the top half like the first, and on the bottom half like the second. Fusion restricts to the Banach-Lie group of restricted orthogonal operators, which supports a central extension of implementers on a Fock space. In this article, we construct a lift of fusion to this central extension. Our construction uses Tomita-Takesaki theory for the Clifford-von Neumann algebras of the decomposed space of spinors. Our motivation is to obtain an operator-algebraic model for the basic central extension of the loop group of the spin group, on which the fusion of implementers induces a fusion product in the sense considered in the context of transgression and string geometry. In upcoming work we will use this model to construct a fusion product on a spinor bundle on the loop space of a string manifold, completing a construction proposed by Stolz and Teichner.

Quantum Brownian motion in a Landau level

Motivated by questions about the open-system dynamics of topological quantum matter, we investigated the quantum Brownian motion of an electron in a homogeneous magnetic field. When the Fermi length $l_F=\hbar/(v_Fm_{\text{eff}})$ becomes much longer than the magnetic length $l_B=(\hbar c/eB)^{1/2}$, then the spatial coordinates $X,Y$ of the electron cease to commute, $[X,Y]=il_B^2$. As a consequence, localization of the electron becomes limited by Heisenberg uncertainty, and the linear bath-electron coupling becomes unconventional. Moreover, because the kinetic energy of the electron is quenched by the strong magnetic field, the electron has no energy to give to or take from the bath, and so the usual connection between frictional forces and dissipation no longer holds. These two features make quantum Brownian motion topological, in the regime $l_F\gg l_B$, which is at the verge of current experimental capabilities. We model topological quantum Brownian motion in terms of an unconventional operator Langevin equation derived from first principles, and solve this equation with the aim of characterizing diffusion. While diffusion in the noncommutative plane turns out to be conventional, with the mean displacement squared being proportional to $t^α$ and $α=1$, there is an exotic regime for the proportionality constant in which it is directly proportional to the friction coefficient and inversely proportional to the square of the magnetic field: in this regime, friction helps diffusion and the magnetic field suppresses all fluctuations. We also show that quantum tunneling can be completely suppressed in the noncommutative plane for suitably designed metastable potential wells, a feature that might be worth exploiting for storage and protection of quantum information.
