Investigation of on-site inter-orbital single electron hoppings in general multi-orbital systems

A general multi-orbital Hubbard model, which includes on-site inter-orbital electron hoppings, is introduced and studied. It is shown that the on-site inter-orbital single electron hopping is one of the most basic interactions. Two electron spin-flip and pair-hoppings are shown to be correlation effects of higher order than the on-site inter-orbital single hopping. It is shown how the double and higher hopping interactions can be well-defined for arbitrary systems. The two-orbital Hubbard model is studied numerically to demonstrate the influence of the single electron hopping effect, leading to a change of the shape of the bands and a shrinking of the difference between the two bands. Inclusion of the on-site inter-orbital hopping suppresses the so-called orbital-selective Mott transition.

Phonon spectrum, thermal expansion and heat capacity of UO$_2$ from first-principles

We report first-principles calculations of the phonon dispersion spectrum, thermal expansion, and heat capacity of uranium dioxide. The so-called direct method, based on the quasiharmonic approximation, is used to calculate the phonon frequencies within a density functional framework for the electronic structure. The phonon dispersions calculated at the theoretical equilibrium volume agree well with experimental dispersions. The computed phonon density of states (DOS) compare reasonably well with measurement data, as do also the calculated frequencies of the Raman and infrared active modes including the LO/TO splitting. To study the pressure dependence of the phonon frequencies we calculate phonon dispersions for several lattice constants. Our computed phonon spectra demonstrate the opening of a gap between the optical and acoustic modes induced by pressure. Taking into account the phonon contribution to the total free energy of UO$_2$ its thermal expansion coefficient and heat capacity have been {\it ab initio} computed. Both quantities are in good agreement with available experimental data for temperatures up to about 500 K.

Spin and orbital hybridization at specifically nested Fermi surfaces in URu$_2$Si$_2$

The Fermi surface (FS) nesting properties of URu$_2$Si$_2$ are analyzed with particular focus on their implication for the mysterious hidden order phase. We show that there exist two Fermi surfaces that exhibit a strong nesting at the antiferromagnetic wavevector, $\boldsymbol{Q}_0$=(0,\,0,\,1). The corresponding energy dispersions fulfill the relation $ε_{1}(\boldsymbol{k})$=$- ε_{2} (\boldsymbol{k}\pm \boldsymbol{Q}_0)$ at eight FS hotspot lines. The spin-orbital characters of the involved $5f$ states are {\it distinct} ($j_z$=$\pm$5/2 {\it vs.} $\pm$3/2) and hence the degenerate Dirac crossings are symmetry protected in the nonmagnetic normal state. Dynamical symmetry breaking through an Ising-like spin and orbital excitation mode with $Δj_z$=$\pm$1 induces a hybridization of the two states, causing substantial FS gapping. Concomitant spin and orbital currents in the uranium planes give rise to a rotational symmetry breaking.

Super-Diffusive Spin-Transport as a Mechanism of Ultrafast Demagnetization

We propose a semi-classical model for femtosecond-laser induced demagnetization due to spin-polarized excited electron diffusion in the super-diffusive regime. Our approach treats the finite elapsed time and transport in space between multiple electronic collisions exactly, as well as the presence of several metal films in the sample. Solving the derived transport equation numerically we show that this mechanism accounts for the experimentally observed demagnetization within 200fs in Ni, without the need to invoke any angular momentum dissipation channel.

Anomalous Femtosecond Quasiparticle Dynamics of Hidden Order State in URu$_2$Si$_2$

At T$_0$ = 17.5 K an exotic phase emerges from a heavy fermion state in {\ur}. The nature of this hidden order (HO) phase has so far evaded explanation. Formation of an unknown quasiparticle (QP) structure is believed to be responsible for the massive removal of entropy at HO transition, however, experiments and ab-initio calculations have been unable to reveal the essential character of the QP. Here we use femtosecond pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) to elucidate the ultrafast dynamics of the QP. We show how the Fermi surface is renormalized by shifting states away from the Fermi level at specific locations, characterized by vector $q_{<110>} = 0.56 \pm 0.08$ {\an}. Measurements of the temperature-time response reveal that upon entering the HO the QP lifetime in those locations increases from 42 fs to few hundred fs. The formation of the long-lived QPs is identified here as a principal actor of the HO.

Charge-induced spin polarization in non-magnetic organic molecule Alq$_{3}$

Electrical injection in organic semiconductors is a key prerequisite for the realization of organic spintronics. Using density-functional theory calculations we report the effect of electron transfer into the organic molecule Alq$_3$. Our first-principles simulations show that electron injection spontaneously spin-polarizes non-magnetic Alq$_3$ with a magnetic moment linearly increasing with induced charge. An asymmetry of the Al--N bond lengths leads to an asymmetric distribution of injected charge over the molecule. The spin-polarization arises from a filling of dominantly the nitrogen $p_z$ orbitals in the molecule's LUMO together with ferromagnetic coupling of the spins on the quinoline rings.

First-Principles Theory of Multipolar Order in Neptunium Dioxide

We provide a first-principle, materials-specific theory of multipolar order and superexchange in NpO$_2$ by means of a non-collinear local-density approximation +$U$ (LDA+$U$) method. Our calculations offer a precise microscopic description of the triple-$q$-antiferro ordered phase in the absence of any dipolar moment. We find that, while the most common non-dipolar degrees of freedom (e.g., electric quadrupoles and magnetic octupoles) are active in the ordered phase, both the usually neglected higher-order multipoles (electric hexadecapoles and magnetic triakontadipoles) have at least an equally significant effect.

Influence of plural scattering on the quantitative determination of spin and orbital moments in electron magnetic circular dichroism measurements

Recent quantitative measurements of the orbital to spin magnetic moment ratio $m_L/m_S$ in electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) experiments have given a $m_L/m_S$ ratio that is larger than commonly accepted values. We demonstrate here that plural scattering may noticeably influence the $m_L/m_S$ ratio. An equation is derived which describes its influence as a function of the spectral integrals of the plasmon scattering region and zero-loss peak. The influence of the electron-plasmon scattering can be removed when electron energy-loss spectra of the ionization edge are deconvoluted by the low-loss signal. For a bcc-Fe sample we obtain $m_L/m_S=0.04$ after plasmon removal. We conclude that the plural scattering should be considered when extracting quantitative information from EMCD measurements.

Reciprocal and real space maps for EMCD experiments

Electron magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) is an emerging tool for quantitative measurements of magnetic properties using the transmission electron microscope (TEM), with the possibility of nanometer resolution. The geometrical conditions, data treatment and electron gun settings are found to influence the EMCD signal. In this article, particular care is taken to obtain a reliable quantitative measurement of the ratio of orbital to spin magnetic moment using energy filtered diffraction patterns. For this purpose, we describe a method for data treatment, normalization and selection of mirror axis. The experimental results are supported by theoretical simulations based on dynamical diffraction and density functional theory. Special settings of the electron gun, so called telefocus mode, enable a higher intensity of the electron beam, as well as a reduction of the influence from artifacts on the signal. Using these settings, we demonstrate the principle of acquiring real space maps of the EMCD signal. This enables advanced characterization of magnetic materials with superior spatial resolution.

Quantitative magnetic information from reciprocal space maps in transmission electron microscopy

One of the most challenging issues in the characterization of magnetic materials is to obtain quantitative analysis on the nanometer scale. Here we describe how electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) measurements using the transmission electron microscope (TEM) can be used for that purpose, utilizing reciprocal space maps. Applying the EMCD sum rules, an orbital to spin moment ratio of $m_L/m_S=0.08 \pm 0.01$ is obtained for Fe, which is consistent with the commonly accepted value. Hence, we establish EMCD as a quantitative element specific technique for magnetic studies, using a widely available instrument with superior spatial resolution.

Sum-rules for electron energy-loss near-edge spectra

We derive four sum-rule expressions for spectra measured in electron energy-loss near edge structure experiments. These sum-rules permit the determination spin and orbital magnetic moments, spin-orbit interaction and number of states, analogously to the sum rules of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The derivation of the sum-rules is based on dynamical electron diffraction theory and the properties of the mixed dynamic form-factor. The accuracy of the sum-rules is tested by a complete evaluation of the thickness dependent electron energy-loss spectra for iron, cobalt, and nickel crystals. We find that the sum-rules reproduce both spin and orbital moments with very good accuracy. Our results provide a foundation for the use of the energy loss magnetic chiral dichroism technique as a quantitative probe of element specific magnetic properties.

Electronic structure and non-magnetic character of $δ$-Pu-Am alloys

The {\em around-mean-field} LSDA+U correlated band theory is applied to investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of $fcc$-Pu-Am alloys. Despite a lattice expansion caused by the Am atoms, neither tendency to 5$f$ localization nor formation of local magnetic moments on Pu atoms in Pu-Am alloys are found. The $5f$-manifolds in the alloys are calculated being very similar to a simple weighted superposition of elemental Pu and Am $5f$-states.

Calculated de Haas-van Alphen quantities of Ce(M)In5 (M=Co, Rh, and Ir) compounds

We report a critical analysis of the electronic structures and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantities of the heavy-fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$, CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIrIn$_5$. The electronic structures are investigated {\it ab initio} on the basis of full-potential band-structure calculations, adopting both the scalar- and fully relativistic formulations within the framework of the local spin-density approximation (LSDA). In contrast to another recent study, in which a pronounced change of the Fermi surface due to relativistic effects and therefore the importance of relativistic interactions for the superconductivity was claimed, we find only minor relativistic modifications of the band structure in our calculations. The {\it ab initio} calculated dHvA quantities are in good agreement with experimental data for CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$, when we adopt the delocalized LSDA description for the Ce $4f$ states. For CeRhIn$_5$, however, a better agreement with experiment is obtained when the Ce $4f$ electron is treated as a localized core electron. The implications for an emerging picture of the localization behavior of the $4f$ electron in these materials are discussed. We furthermore compare our calculated dHvA quantities with other recent relativistic calculations and discuss the differences between them.

Anomalous Ferromagnetism of Monatomic Co Wire at the Pt(111) Surface Step Edge

A first-principles investigation of the anomalous ferromagnetism of a quasi-one-dimensional Co chain at the Pt(111) step edge is reported. Our calculations show that the symmetry breaking at the step leads to an easy magnetization axis at an odd angle of $\sim20^{\circ}$ {\em towards} the Pt step, in agreement with experiment [P. Gambardella {\em et al.}, {\em Nature} {\bf 416}, 301 (2002)]. Also, the Co spin and orbital moments become noncollinear, even in the case of a collinear ferromagnetic spin arrangement. A significant enhancement of the Co orbital magnetic moment is achieved when modest electron correlations are treated within LSDA+$U$ calculations.
