Theory and Phenomenology of the Polyakov loop in QCD Thermodynamics

A synthesis of Polyakov loop models of the deconfinement transition and quasiparticle models of gluon plasma thermodynamics leads to a class of models in which gluons move in a non-trivial Polyakov loop background. These models are successful candidates for explaining both critical behavior and the equation of state for the SU(3) gauge theory at finite temperature. Two sensitive lattice probes which can discriminate between models are the Polyakov loop P and e-3p.

Finite-Dimensional PT-Symmetric Hamiltonians

This paper investigates finite-dimensional representations of PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. In doing so, it clarifies some of the claims made in earlier papers on PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. In particular, it is shown here that there are two ways to extend real symmetric Hamiltonians into the complex domain: (i) The usual approach is to generalize such Hamiltonians to include complex Hermitian Hamiltonians. (ii) Alternatively, one can generalize real symmetric Hamiltonians to include complex PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. In the first approach the spectrum remains real, while in the second approach the spectrum remains real if the PT symmetry is not broken. Both generalizations give a consistent theory of quantum mechanics, but if D>2, a D-dimensional Hermitian matrix Hamiltonian has more arbitrary parameters than a D-dimensional PT-symmetric matrix Hamiltonian.

All Hermitian Hamiltonians Have Parity

It is shown that if a Hamiltonian $H$ is Hermitian, then there always exists an operator P having the following properties: (i) P is linear and Hermitian; (ii) P commutes with H; (iii) P^2=1; (iv) the nth eigenstate of H is also an eigenstate of P with eigenvalue (-1)^n. Given these properties, it is appropriate to refer to P as the parity operator and to say that H has parity symmetry, even though P may not refer to spatial reflection. Thus, if the Hamiltonian has the form H=p^2+V(x), where V(x) is real (so that H possesses time-reversal symmetry), then it immediately follows that H has PT symmetry. This shows that PT symmetry is a generalization of Hermiticity: All Hermitian Hamiltonians of the form H=p^2+V(x) have PT symmetry, but not all PT-symmetric Hamiltonians of this form are Hermitian.

Calculation of the Hidden Symmetry Operator in PT-Symmetric Quantum Mechanics

In a recent paper it was shown that if a Hamiltonian H has an unbroken PT symmetry, then it also possesses a hidden symmetry represented by the linear operator C. The operator C commutes with both H and PT. The inner product with respect to CPT is associated with a positive norm and the quantum theory built on the associated Hilbert space is unitary. In this paper it is shown how to construct the operator C for the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian $H={1\over2}p^2+{1\over2}x^2 +iεx^3$ using perturbative techniques. It is also shown how to construct the operator C for $H={1\over2}p^2+{1\over2}x^2-εx^4$ using nonperturbative methods.

A Phenomenological Treatment of Chiral Symmetry Restoration and Deconfinement

A phenomenological expression for the thermodynamic potential of gluons and quarks is constructed which incorporates the features of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration known from lattice simulations. The thermodynamic potential is a function of the Polyakov loop and chiral condensate expectation values. The gluonic sector uses a successful model for pure (SU(N_c)) gauge theories in which the Polyakov loop eigenvalues are the fundamental order parameters for deconfinement. The quark sector is given by a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in which a constant background (A_0) field couples the chiral condensate to the Polyakov loop. We consider the case of (N_f = 2) in detail. For two massless quarks, we find a second order chiral phase transition. Confinement effects push the transition to higher temperatures, but the entropy associated with the gluonic sector acts in the opposite direction. For light mass quarks, only a rapid crossover occurs. For sufficiently heavy quarks, a first order deconfinement transition emerges. This simplest model has one adjustable parameter, which can be set from the chiral transition temperature for light quarks. It predicts all thermodynamic quantities as well as the behavior of the chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop over a wide range of temperatures.

Two-Point Green's Function in PT-Symmetric Theories

The Hamiltonian $H={1\over2} p^2+{1\over2}m^2x^2+gx^2(ix)^δ$ with $δ,g\geq0$ is non-Hermitian, but the energy levels are real and positive as a consequence of ${\cal PT}$ symmetry. The quantum mechanical theory described by $H$ is treated as a one-dimensional Euclidean quantum field theory. The two-point Green's function for this theory is investigated using perturbative and numerical techniques. The Källen-Lehmann representation for the Green's function is constructed, and it is shown that by virtue of ${\cal PT}$ symmetry the Green's function is entirely real. While the wave-function renormalization constant $Z$ cannot be interpreted as a conventional probability, it still obeys a normalization determined by the commutation relations of the field. This provides strong evidence that the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian are complete.

The Finite Temperature SU(2) Savvidy Model with a Non-trivial Polyakov Loop

We calculate the complete one-loop effective potential for SU(2) gauge bosons at temperature T as a function of two variables: phi, the angle associated with a non-trivial Polyakov loop, and H, a constant background chromomagnetic field. Using techniques broadly applicable to finite temperature field theories, we develop both low and high temperature expansions. At low temperatures, the real part of the effective potential V_R indicates a rich phase structure, with a discontinuous alternation between confined (phi=pi) and deconfined phases (phi=0). The background field H moves slowly upward from its zero-temperature value as T increases, in such a way that sqrt(gH)/(pi T) is approximately an integer. Beyond a certain temperature on the order of sqrt(gH), the deconfined phase is always preferred. At high temperatures, where asymptotic freedom applies, the deconfined phase phi=0 is always preferred, and sqrt(gH) is of order g^2(T)T. The imaginary part of the effective potential is non-zero at the global minimum of V_R for all temperatures. A non-perturbative magnetic screening mass of the form M_m = cg^2(T)T with a sufficiently large coefficient c removes this instability at high temperature, leading to a stable high-temperature phase with phi=0 and H=0, characteristic of a weakly-interacting gas of gauge particles. The value of M_m obtained is comparable with lattice estimates.

Complete High Temperature Expansions for One-Loop Finite Temperature Effects

We develop exact, simple closed form expressions for partition functions associated with relativistic bosons and fermions in odd spatial dimensions. These expressions, valid at high temperature, include the effects of a non-trivial Polyakov loop and generalize well-known high temperature expansions. The key technical point is the proof of a set of Bessel function identities which resum low temperature expansions into high temperature expansions. The complete expressions for these partition functions can be used to obtain one-loop finite temperature contributions to effective potentials, and thus free energies and pressures.

Phenomenological Models of the Quark-Gluon Plasma Equation of State

Two phenomenological models describing an SU(N) quark-gluon plasma are presented. The first is obtained from high temperature expansions of the free energy of a massive gluon, while the second is derived by demanding color neutrality over a certain length scale. Each model has a single free parameter, exhibits behavior similar to lattice simulations over the range T_d-5T_d, and has the correct blackbody behavior for large temperatures. The N=2 deconfinement transition is second order in both models, while N=3,4, and 5 are first order. Both modelsappear to have a smooth large-N limit. In both models, the confined phase is characterized by a mutual repulsion of Polyakov loop eigenvalues that makes the Polyakov loop expectation value zero. In the deconfined phase, the rotation of the eigenvalues in the complex plane towards 1 is responsible for the approach to the blackbody limit over the range T_d-5T_d. The addition of quarks in SU(3) breaks Z(3) symmetry weakly and eliminates the deconfining phase transition for sufficiently light quarks.

Phenomenological Equations of State for SU(N) Gauge Theories

Two phenomenological models describing an SU(N) gluon plasma are presented using the eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop as the order parameters of the deconfinement transition. The N=2 deconfinement transition is second order in both models, while N=3,4, and 5 are first order. Both models appear to have a smooth large-N limit. The confined phase is characterized by a mutual repulsion of Polyakov loop eigenvalues that makes the Polyakov loop expectation value zero. The motion of the eigenvalues is responsible for the approach to the blackbody limit over the range T_d-5T_d.

Phenomenological Equations of State for the Quark-Gluon Plasma

Two phenomenological models describing an SU(N) quark-gluon plasma are presented. The first is obtained from high temperature expansions of the free energy of a massive gluon, while the second is derived by demanding color neutrality over a certain length scale. Each model has a single free parameter, exhibits behavior similar to lattice simulations over the range T_d - 5T_d, and has the correct blackbody behavior for large temperatures. The N = 2 deconfinement transition is second order in both models, while N = 3,4, and 5 are first order. Both models appear to have a smooth large-N limit. For N >= 4, it is shown that the trace of the Polyakov loop is insufficient to characterize the phase structure; the free energy is best described using the eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop. In both models, the confined phase is characterized by a mutual repulsion of Polyakov loop eigenvalues that makes the Polyakov loop expectation value zero. In the deconfined phase, the rotation of the eigenvalues in the complex plane towards 1 is responsible for the approach to the blackbody limit over the range T_d - 5T_d. The addition of massless quarks in SU(3) breaks Z(3) symmetry weakly and eliminates the deconfining phase transition. In contrast, a first-order phase transition persists with sufficiently heavy quarks.

Quantum Complex Henon-Heiles Potentials

Quantum-mechanical PT-symmetric theories associated with complex cubic potentials such as V=x^2+y^2+igxy^2 and V=x^2+y^2+z^2+igxyz, where g is a real parameter, are investigated. These theories appear to possess real, positive spectra. Low-lying energy levels are calculated to very high order in perturbation theory. The large-order behavior of the perturbation coefficients is determined using multidimensional WKB tunneling techniques. This approach is also applied to the complex Henon-Heiles potential V=x^2+y^2+ig(xy^2-x^3/3).

Double-Scaling Limit of a Broken Symmetry Quantum Field Theory

The Ising limit of a conventional Hermitian parity-symmetric scalar quantum field theory is a correlated limit in which two bare Lagrangian parameters, the coupling constant $g$ and the {\it negative} mass squared $-m^2$, both approach infinity with the ratio $-m^2/g=α>0$ held fixed. In this limit the renormalized mass of the asymptotic theory is finite. Moreover, the limiting theory exhibits universal properties. For a non-Hermitian $\cal PT$-symmetric Lagrangian lacking parity symmetry, whose interaction term has the form $-g(iϕ)^N/N$, the renormalized mass diverges in this correlated limit. Nevertheless, the asymptotic theory still has interesting properties. For example, the one-point Green's function approaches the value $-iα^{1/(N-2)}$ independently of the space-time dimension $D$ for $D<2$. Moreover, while the Ising limit of a parity-symmetric quantum field theory is dominated by a dilute instanton gas, the corresponding correlated limit of a $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum field theory without parity symmetry is dominated by a constant-field configuration with corrections determined by a weak-coupling expansion in which the expansion parameter (the amplitude of the vertices of the graphs in this expansion) is proportional to an inverse power of $g$. We thus observe a weak-coupling/strong-coupling duality in that while the Ising limit is a strong-coupling limit of the quantum field theory, the expansion about this limit takes the form of a conventional weak-coupling expansion. A possible generalization of the Ising limit to dimensions $D<4$ is briefly discussed.

Landau-Ginsberg Theory of Quark Confinement

We describe the SU(3) deconfinement transition using Landau-Ginsberg theory. Drawing on perturbation theory and symmetry principles, we construct the free energy as a function of temperature and the Polyakov loop. Once the two adjustable parameters of the model are fixed, the pressure p, energy epsilon and Polyakov loop expectation value P_F are calculable functions of temperature. An excellent fit to the continuum extrapolation of lattice thermodynamics data can be achieved. In an extended form of the model, the glueball potential is responsible for breaking scale invariance at low temperatures. Three parameters are required, but the glueball mass and the gluon condensate are calculable functions of temperature, along with p, epsilon and P_F.

Complex periodic potentials with real band spectra

This paper demonstrates that complex PT-symmetric periodic potentials possess real band spectra. However, there are significant qualitative differences in the band structure for these potentials when compared with conventional real periodic potentials. For example, while the potentials V(x)=i\sin^{2N+1}(x), (N=0, 1, 2, ...), have infinitely many gaps, at the band edges there are periodic wave functions but no antiperiodic wave functions. Numerical analysis and higher-order WKB techniques are used to establish these results.

Finite Temperature Quark Confinement

Confinement may be more easily demonstrated at finite temperature using the Polyakov loop than at zero temperature using the Wilson loop. A natural mechanism for confinement can arise via the coupling of the adjoint Polyakov loop to F_{mu nu}^2. We demonstrate this mechanism with a one-loop calculation of the effective potential for SU(2) gluons in a background field consisting of a non-zero color magnetic field and a non-trivial Polyakov loop. The color magnetic field drives the Polyakov loop to non-trivial behavior, and the Polyakov loop can remove the well-known tachyonic mode associated with the Saviddy vacuum. Minimizing the real part of the effective potential leads to confinement, as determined by the Polyakov loop. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange for simultaneous stability and confinement for this simple class of field configurations. We show for a large class of abelian background fields that at one loop tachyonic modes are necessary for confinement.

Chiral Symmetry Restoration and $Z_N$ Symmetry

We demonstrate that chiral symmetry restoration in quenched finite temperature QCD depends crucially on the $Z_3$ phase of the Polyakov loop ${\cal P}$. This dependence is a general consequence of the coupling of the chiral order parameter to the Polyakov loop. We construct a model for chiral symmetry breaking and restoration which includes the effect of a nontrivial Polyakov loop by calculating the effective potential for the chiral condensate of a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a uniform temperature dependent $A_0$ gauge field background. Above the deconfinement temperature there are three possible phases corresponding to the $Z_3$ symmetric phases of the Polyakov loop in the pure gauge theory. In the phase in which ${\rm tr_c}({\cal P})$ is real and positive the first order deconfining transition induces chiral symmetry restoration in agreement with simulation results. In the two phases where $Re[{\rm tr_c}({\cal P})] < 0$ the sign of the leading finite temperature correction to the effective potential is reversed from the normal phase, and chiral symmetry is not restored at the deconfinement transition; this agrees with the recent simulation studies of Chandrasekharan and Christ. In the case of $SU(N)$ a rich set of possibilites emerges. The generality of the mechanism makes it likely to occur in full QCD as well; this will increase the lifetimes of metastable $Z_3$ phases.

Coupling the Deconfining and Chiral Transitions

The Polyakov loop and the chiral condensate are used as order parameters to explore analytically the possible phase structure of finite temperature QCD. Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models in a background temporal gauge field are combined with a Polyakov loop potential in a form suitable for both the lattice and the continuum. Three possible behaviors are found: a first-order transition, a second-order transition, and a region with both transitions.
