Synthetic spectra for O and B type subdwarf stars

We present a grid of optical (3200--7200 Å) synthetic spectra calculated with Tlusty/Synspec. The new NLTE model atmospheres include the most recent hydrogen Stark broadening profiles; were calculated in opacity sampling and limited to pure H/He composition. The grid covers the observed parameter space of (He-)sdB and (He-)sdO stars, therefore it is suitable for the homogeneous spectral analyses of such evolved stars.

SD1000 Collaboration: Hunting down the subdwarf populations

Separating the subdwarf populations may shed light on their formation history and give unique insights into the atmospheric processes that are thought to be responsible for their abundance diversity. Such a task requires complex and time consuming spectral analyses, which we started to tailor to our objectives a year ago. Here we report the updates that have been made over the past year and will be the standard method in SD1000.

Properties of hot subdwarfs in the GALEX survey

We have analyzed a sample of hot subdwarfs (sdB, sdO) selected from the GALEX ultraviolet sky survey. Applying a model atmosphere analysis we determined the temperature, surface gravity, and helium-to-hydrogen abundance ratio, and obtained preliminary constraints on the CNO abundance for a sample of 181 stars. Adopting colourimetric (ultraviolet-infrared) and quantitative spectral decomposition we also investigated the incidence of solar type or earlier (A, F, G) companions.

Binary properties of subdwarfs selected in the GALEX survey

We describe our programme to identify and analyse binary stars among the bright subdwarfs selected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) survey. Radial velocity time-series helped us identify subdwarfs with low-mass or compact stellar companions: We describe work conducted on the bright binaries GALEX J0321+4727 and GALEX J2349+3844, and we present a radial velocity study of several objects that include three new likely binaries. We also carried out photometric observations that allowed us to detect long period pulsations in the subdwarf components in two of the close binaries.

Abundance analysis of DAZ white dwarfs

We present an abundance analysis of a sample of 33 hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs. We have used archival high-resolution spectra to measure abundances of calcium, magnesium and iron in a set of 30 objects. In addition, we present preliminary calcium abundances in three new white dwarfs based on low-dispersion spectra. We investigate some abundance ratios (Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca) that may help uncover the composition of the accretion source.

Accretion and diffusion in the DAZ white dwarf GALEX J1931+0117

We present an analysis of high-dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of the DAZ white dwarf GALEX J1931+0117. The spectra obtained with the VLT-Kueyen/UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph show several well-resolved Si II spectral lines enabling a study of pressure effects on line profiles. We observed large Stark shifts in silicon lines in agreement with laboratory measurements. A model atmosphere analysis shows that the magnesium, silicon and iron abundances exceed solar abundances, while the oxygen and calcium abundances are below solar. Also, we compared the observed line profiles to synthetic spectra computed with variable accretion rates and vertical abundance distributions assuming diffusion steady-state. The inferred accretion rates vary from dM/dt=2x10^6 for calcium to 2x10^9 g/s for oxygen and indicate that the accretion flow is dominated by oxygen, silicon and iron while being deficient in carbon, magnesium and calcium. The lack of radial velocity variations between two measurement epochs suggests that GALEX J1931+0117 is probably not in a close binary and that the source of the accreted material resides in a debris disc.

Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalogue

We present refined coordinates and proper motion data for the high proper motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalogue. The positional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalogue is typically >10" and is often >30". We have used the digital scans of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positions and proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHS catalogue, 4323 objects were manually re-identified in the POSS I and POSS II scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found due to the lack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties in the revised positions are typically ~2", but can be as high as ~8" in a few cases; this is a large improvement over the original data. Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogues yielded 819 candidates (with m_R < 12). For these brighter sources, the position and proper motion data have been replaced with the more accurate Tycho/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper motion measurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for 4330 stars, which are presented here.
