Boundaries and Defects of N=4 SYM with 4 Supercharges, Part II: Brane Constructions and 3d N=2 Field Theories

We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper arXiv:1404.5527. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Boundaries and Defects of N=4 SYM with 4 Supercharges, Part I: Boundary/Junction Conditions

We consider ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang Mills theory on a space with supersymmetry preserving boundary conditions. The boundaries preserving half of the 16 supercharges were analyzed and classified in an earlier work by Gaiotto and Witten. We extend that analysis to the case with fewer supersymmetries, concentrating mainly on the case preserving one quarter. We develop tools necessary to explicitly construct boundary conditions which can be viewed as taking the zero slope limit of a system of D3 branes intersecting and ending on a collection of NS5 and D5 branes oriented to preserve the appropriate number of supersymmetries. We analyze how these boundary conditions constrain the bulk degrees of freedom and enumerate the unconstrained degrees of freedom from the boundary/defect field theory point of view. The key ingredients used in the analysis are a generalized version of Nahm's equations and the explicit boundary/interface conditions for the NS5-like and D5-like impurities and boundaries, which we construct and describe in detail. Some bulk degrees of freedom suggested by the naive brane diagram considerations are lifted.

Toward Higher Spin dS3/CFT2

I take steps toward the construction of a CFT dual to Vasiliev's higher spin gravity in three dimensional de Sitter space. There are two main claims. The first is that higher spin de Sitter symmetries are related to extended Virasoro symmetries, as in AdS; this is verified explicitly for the case of W_3 asymptotic symmetry. The associated chiral algebra has imaginary central charge. The second (conjectural) claim, inspired by work of Gaberdiel and Gopakumar in AdS_3/CFT_2, is that an appropriate CFT can be identified as an exotic non-unitary WZW coset model at complex level.

Branes and fluxes in special holonomy manifolds and cascading field theories

We conduct a study of holographic RG flows whose UV is a theory in 2+1 dimensions decoupled from gravity, and the IR is the N=6,8 superconformal fixed point of ABJM. The solutions we consider are constructed by warping the M-theory background whose eight spatial dimensions are manifolds of special holonomies sp(1) times sp(1) and spin(7). Our main example for the spin(7) holonomy manifold is the A8 geometry originally constructed by Cvetic, Gibbons, Lu, and Pope. On the gravity side, our constructions generalize the earlier construction of RG flow where the UV was N=3 Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matter system and are simpler in a number of ways. Through careful consideration of Page, Maxwell, and brane charges, we identify the discrete and continuous parameters characterizing each system. We then determine the range of the discrete data, corresponding to the flux/rank for which the supersymmetry is unbroken, and estimate the dynamical supersymmetry breaking scale as a function of these data. We then point out the similarity between the physics of supersymmetry breaking between our system and the system considered by Maldacena and Nastase. We also describe the condition for unbroken supersymmetry on class of construction based on a different class of spin(7) manifolds known as B8 spaces whose IR is different from that of ABJM and exhibit some interesting features.

Quantization of charges and fluxes in warped Stenzel geometry

We examine the quantization of fluxes for the warped Stiefel cone and Stenzel geometries and their orbifolds, and distinguish the roles of three related notions of charge: Page, Maxwell, and brane. The orbifolds admit discrete torsion, and we describe the associated quantum numbers which are consistent with the geometry in its large radius and small radius limits from both the type IIA and the M-theory perspectives. The discrete torsion, measured by a Page charge, is related to the number of fractional branes. We relate the shifts in the Page charges under large gauge transformations to the Hanany-Witten brane creation effect.

On Supersymmetric D7-branes in the Warped Deformed Conifold

We study the supersymmetric properties of D7-branes in the warped deformed conifold. We consider the $κ$-symmetry conditions on D7-branes in this specific warped background, taking into account the background NS-NS 2-form flux. While any holomorphic embedding defines a supersymmetric D7-brane in the absence of background H-flux, most of the D7-brane embeddings considered in the literature do not preserve supersymmetry for the warped deformed conifold without also including brane worldvolume flux. For the simplest such embedding, we construct numerically the worldvolume fluxnecessary to restore supersymmetry. We also comment on the dual field theory descriptions in terms of cascading N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with flavors. Finally, we discuss some possible applications of our results to moduli stabilization and vacuum energy uplifting, gauge/gravity duality, and string inflationary model building.

D-brane Charges in Gravitational Duals of 2+1 Dimensional Gauge Theories and Duality Cascades

We perform a systematic analysis of the D-brane charges associated with string theory realizations of d=3 gauge theories, focusing on the examples of the N=4 supersymmetric U(N)xU(N+M) Yang-Mills theory and the N=3 supersymmetric U(N)xU(N+M) Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory. We use both the brane construction of these theories and their dual string theory backgrounds in the supergravity approximation. In the N=4 case we generalize the previously known gravitational duals to arbitrary values of the gauge couplings, and present a precise mapping between the gravity and field theory parameters. In the N=3 case, which (for some values of N and M) flows to an N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory in the IR, we argue that the careful analysis of the charges leads to a shift in the value of the B-field in the IR solution by 1/2, in units where its periodicity is one, compared to previous claims. We also suggest that the N=3 theories may exhibit, for some values of N and M, duality cascades similar to those of the Klebanov-Strassler theory.

Deflected Mirage Mediation: A Framework for Generalized Supersymmetry Breaking

We present a general phenomenological framework for dialing between gravity mediation, gauge mediation, and anomaly mediation. The approach is motivated from recent developments in moduli stabilization, which suggest that gravity mediated terms can be effectively loop suppressed and thus comparable to gauge and anomaly mediated terms. The gauginos exhibit a mirage unification behavior at a "deflected" scale, and gluinos are often the lightest colored sparticles. The approach provides a rich setting in which to explore generalized supersymmetry breaking at the LHC.

Moduli Stabilization and Supersymmetry Breaking in Deflected Mirage Mediation

We present a model of supersymmetry breaking in which the contributions from gravity/modulus, anomaly, and gauge mediation are all comparable. We term this scenario "deflected mirage mediation," which is a generalization of the KKLT-motivated mirage mediation scenario to include gauge mediated contributions. These contributions deflect the gaugino mass unification scale and alter the pattern of soft parameters at low energies. In some cases, this results in a gluino LSP and light stops; in other regions of parameter space, the LSP can be a well-tempered neutralino. We demonstrate explicitly that competitive gauge-mediated terms can naturally appear within phenomenological models based on the KKLT setup by addressing the stabilization of the gauge singlet field which is responsible for the masses of the messenger fields. For viable stabilization mechanisms, the relation between the gauge and anomaly contributions is identical in most cases to that of deflected anomaly mediation, despite the presence of the Kahler modulus. Turning to TeV scale phenomenology, we analyze the renormalization group evolution of the supersymmetry breaking terms and the resulting low energy mass spectra. The approach sets the stage for studies of such mixed scenarios of supersymmetry breaking at the LHC.

Supergravity dual of Chern-Simons Yang-Mills theory with N=6,8 superconformal IR fixed point

We construct a solution of eleven dimensional supergravity corresponding to a stack of M2 branes localized at the center of a particular eight dimensional hyper-Kaehler manifold constructed by Gauntlett, Gibbons, Papadopoulos, and Townsend, generalizing the earlier construction of Cherkis and Hashimoto. In the decoupling limit, this solution is dual to a Chern-Simons/Yang-Mills/Matter theory in 2+1 dimensions with N=3 supersymmetry, which flows in the infra red to a superconformal Chern-Simons/Matter system preserving N=6,8 supersymmetry, constructed recently by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis, and Maldacena.

Mesons and Flavor on the Conifold

We explore the addition of fundamental matter to the Klebanov-Witten field theory. We add probe D7-branes to the ${\cal N}=1$ theory obtained from placing D3-branes at the tip of the conifold and compute the meson spectrum for the scalar mesons. In the UV limit of massless quarks we find the exact dimensions of the associated operators, which exhibit a simple scaling in the large-charge limit. For the case of massive quarks we compute the spectrum of scalar mesons numerically.

Do Chiral Soliton Models Predict Pentaquarks?

We reconsider the relationship between the bound state and the SU(3) rigid rotator approaches to strangeness in chiral soliton models. For non-exotic $S=-1$ baryons the bound state approach matches for small $m_K$ onto the rigid rotator approach, and the bound state mode turns into the rotator zero-mode. However, for small $m_K$, there are no $S=+1$ kaon bound states or resonances in the spectrum. This shows that for large $N$ and small $m_K$ the exotic state is an artifact of the rigid rotator approach. An $S=+1$ near-threshold state with the quantum numbers of the $Θ^+$ pentaquark comes into existence only when sufficiently strong SU(3) breaking is introduced into the chiral lagrangian. Therefore, pentaquarks are not generic predictions of the chiral soliton models.

Holomorphic D7-Branes and Flavored N=1 Gauge Theories

We consider D7-branes in the gauge theory/string theory correspondence, using a probe approximation. The D7-branes have four directions embedded holomorphically in a non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-fold (which for specificity we take to be the conifold) and their remaining four directions are parallel to a stack of D3-branes transverse to the Calabi-Yau space. The dual gauge theory, which has $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry, contains quarks which transform in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, and we identify the interactions of these quarks in terms of a superpotential. By activating three-form fluxes in the gravity background, we obtain a dual gauge theory with a cascade of Seiberg dualities. We find a supersymmetric supergravity solution for the leading backreaction effects of the D7-branes, valid for asymptotically large radius. The cascading theory with flavors exhibits the interesting phenomenon that the rate of the cascade slows and can stop as the theory flows to the infrared.

Is Theta+(1540) a Kaon--Skyrmion Resonance?

We reconsider the relationship between the bound state and the SU(3) rigid rotator approaches to strangeness in the Skyrme model. For non-exotic S=-1 baryons the bound state approach matches for small m_K onto the rigid rotator approach, and the bound state mode turns into the rotator zero-mode. However, for small m_K, we find no S=+1 kaon bound states or resonances in the spectrum, confirming previous work. This suggests that, at least for large N and small m_K, the exotic state may be an artifact of the rigid rotator approach to the Skyrme model. An S=+1 near-threshold state comes into existence only for sufficiently large SU(3) breaking. If such a state exists, then it has the expected quantum numbers of Theta+: I=0, J=1/2 and positive parity. Other exotic states with (I=1, J^P=3/2+), (I=1,J^P=1/2+), (I=2, J^P=5/2+) and (I=2,J^P=3/2+) appear as its SU(2) rotator excitations. As a test of our methods, we also identify a D-wave S=-1 near-threshold resonance that, upon SU(2) collective coordinate quantization, reproduces the mass splittings of the observed states Lambda(1520), Sigma(1670) and Sigma(1775) with good accuracy.

Remarks on the Warped Deformed Conifold

We assemble a few remarks on the supergravity solution of hep-th/0007191, whose UV asymptotic form was previously found in hep-th/0002159. First, by normalizing the R-R fluxes, we compare the logarithmic flow of couplings in supergravity with that in field theory, and find exact agreement. We also write the 3-form field strength $G_3 = F_3 - τH_3$ present in the solution in a manifestly SO(4) invariant (2,1) form. In addition, we discuss various issues related to the chiral symmetry breaking and wrapped branes.

Semiclassical Quantization of Giant Gravitons

We study excited spherical branes (``giant gravitons'') in $AdS \times S$ spacetimes with background flux. For large excitation, these branes may be treated semiclassically. We compute their spectra using Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to relate them to anomalous dimensions in the dual field theory at strong coupling, expressed as a series expansion in powers of 1/N. These effects resemble those due to $k$-body forces between quarks in Hartree-Fock models of baryons at large $N$. For branes expanded in AdS, we argue that the anomalous dimensions are due to loop corrections to the effective action.

A Gravity Dual of the Chiral Anomaly

We study effects associated with the chiral anomaly for a cascading $SU(N+M)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory using gauge/gravity duality. In the gravity dual the anomaly is a classical feature of the supergravity solution, and the breaking of the U(1) R-symmetry down to ${\bf Z}_{2M}$ proceeds via the Higgs mechanism.

D-Branes on the Conifold and N=1 Gauge/Gravity Dualities

We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity dualities with N=1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at the apex of the conifold. We consider first the conformal case, with discussions of chiral primary operators and wrapped D-branes. Next, we break the conformal symmetry by adding a stack of partially wrapped D5-branes to the system, changing the gauge group and introducing a logarithmic renormalization group flow. In the gravity dual, the effect of these wrapped D5-branes is to turn on the flux of 3-form field strengths. The associated RR 2-form potential breaks the U(1) R-symmetry to $Z_{2M}$ and we study this phenomenon in detail. This extra flux also leads to deformation of the cone near the apex, which describes the chiral symmetry breaking and confinement in the dual gauge theory.
