QCD Chiral Crossover Line from Lee-Yang Edge Singularities

We propose a universality-based reconstruction of the QCD chiral crossover line from Lee-Yang edge singularities in the complex baryon chemical potential plane. The framework maps lattice-extracted complex Lee-Yang-zero estimates, treated as proxies for edge singularities, to the universal chiral Lee-Yang edge and thereby determines the $μ_B$ dependence of both the chiral critical line in the light-quark chiral limit and the pseudo-critical crossover line at physical quark masses. As an illustration, we apply the framework to Lee-Yang-zero estimates recently obtained by the Wuppertal-Budapest collaboration from high-statistics lattice QCD simulations. Without imposing the previously determined small-$μ_B$ expansion of the crossover line as input, the reconstructed curvature is consistent with existing continuum lattice-QCD results at small $μ_B$. The fitted chiral-limit transition temperature is also compatible with existing chiral-scaling analyses. These results demonstrate that lattice information on Lee-Yang singularities, combined with universal chiral scaling, provides a quantitatively consistent constraint on the QCD crossover line within the present temperature window and establishes a framework that can be systematically improved with future Lee-Yang-zero determinations.

Proton isovector helicity PDF at NNLO and the twist-3 moment $\tilde{d}_2$ from lattice QCD at physical quark masses

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation of the $x$-dependent isovector quark helicity parton distribution function (PDF) of the proton in the large momentum effective theory (LaMET) framework. Through operator product expansion (OPE) we also extract the $\tilde{d}_2$ moment of the twist-3 PDF $g_T(x)$ for the first time in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, which is proportional to the average color Lorentz force experienced by the quark in the proton. This calculation is performed on a lattice of spacing $a$ = 0.076 fm at physical quark masses. The quasi-PDF matrix elements are measured in proton states boosted to momenta $P_z=\{0, 0.25, 1.02, 1.53\}$ GeV. We first extract the lowest few helicity PDF moments from the renormalization-group (RG) invariant ratios of the matrix elements with OPE. Combined with the matrix elements relevant for $g_T(x)$, we obtain $\tilde{d}_2^{u-d}(2\ {\rm GeV})=0.0024(46)$ at next-to-leading order in $\overline{\rm MS}$. Then, the helicity quasi-PDF matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme with linear renormalon resummation and Fourier transformed to the $x$-space after an asymptotic extrapolation. The quasi-PDF is perturbatively matched to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ PDF with RG and threshold resummations at next-to-leading power and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracies. After resummations, we determine the PDF in the region $x\in[0.25,0.75]$ with controlled systematic uncertainties. The end-point regions are then parameterized, combined with the LaMET prediction at moderate $x$, and fitted to the short-distance matrix elements in coordinate space.

Spatial String Tension at High Temperatures and Quantitative Tests of Dimensionally Reduced Effective Theories

We calculate the spatial string tension in 2+1 flavour QCD in $(3{+}1)$ dimensions within a temperature range of $[166\,\mathrm{MeV},\,1000\,\mathrm{MeV}]$ using spatial Wilson loops with HYP smearing. We use the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action for fermions and the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action for gluons at two lattice spacings corresponding to temporal extents $N_τ= 8$ and $10$. We then compare our results with dimensionally reduced effective theories at high temperatures (EQCD and MQCD) to test the onset of dimensional reduction in QCD.

Bottomonium Properties in QGP from a Lattice-QCD Informed T-Matrix Approach

Recent lattice quantum chromodynamics (lQCD) computations of bottomonium correlation functions with extended sources provide new insights into heavy-quark dynamics at distance scales which are of the order of the inverse temperature. We analyze these results employing the thermodynamic T-matrix approach, in a continued effort to interpret lQCD data for quarkonium correlation functions in a non-perturbative framework suitable for strongly coupled systems. Its key inputs are the in-medium driving kernel (potential) of the scattering equation and an interference function which implements 3-body effects in the quarkonium coupling to the thermal medium. A simultaneous description of lQCD results for the bottomonium correlators with extended operators and the previously analyzed Wilson line correlators only requires minor refinements of the potential but calls for stronger interference effects at larger separation of the bottom quark and antiquark. We then analyze the poles of the self-consistent T-matrices on the real axis to assess the survival of the various bound states. We estimate the pertinent temperatures where the poles disappear for the various bottomonium states and discuss the relation to the corresponding peaks in the bottomonium spectral functions. We also recalculate the spatial diffusion coefficient of the QGP and find it to be similar to that in our previous study.

Charmonium properties at high temperatures from lattice QCD

We study charmonium properties at non-zero temperature in the temperature range 153 MeV $<T<$ 305 MeV using lattice QCD. We use HISQ action for dynamical quarks and Wilson clover action for valence charm quarks and calculate the correlation function of extended meson operators. Our lattice QCD results are consistent with the existence of all charmonium states below the open charm threshold in this temperature region. However, charmonium states acquire sizable thermal width, which increases with increasing temperature. The size of the thermal width follows the hierarchy of charmonium sizes, i.e. the smaller ground state charmonium has a smaller thermal width than the larger excited charmonia.

Strong coupling constant from the 1-loop improved static energy

The static energy is an excellent observable for extracting the strong coupling $α_s$ on the lattice. For short distances, the static energy can be calculated both on the lattice using Wilson line correlators, and with perturbation theory up to three loop accuracy with leading ultrasoft log resummation. Comparing the perturbative expression and lattice data allows for precise determination of $α_s$. We present early results for 1-loop lattice perturbation theory improvement of the Wilson loop and show how it improves the $α_s$ extraction. We present a preliminary reanalysis of the TUMQCD (2+1)-flavor QCD data.

Scale Setting and Strong Coupling Determination in the Gradient Flow Scheme for 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We report on the determination of the gradient flow scales in $N_f=2+1$ QCD using highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles generated by the HotQCD Collaboration for bare gauge couplings ranging from $β= 6.423$ to $8.400$. Using bottomonium splittings, kaon decay constant, the decay constant of unmixed $η_s$ meson and the $ϕ$ meson mass we obtained the values of the gradient flow scales in physical units, $\sqrt{t_0} = 0.14428(48)$~fm and $w_0 = 0.17391(52)$~fm. Using the same physical inputs we revisit the determination of the potential $r_1$ scale and find $r_1 = 0.3112(24)$~fm. As a byproduct of our study we obtain the running of the gauge coupling in the gradient flow scheme. We find that within the uncertainties the running of the gradient flow coupling obtained on the lattice is compatible with the perturbative results up to flow radius $\sqrt{8 τ_F}=0.15$ fm.

Nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from Boosted Correlations in the Coulomb gauge

Recently, a novel approach has been proposed to compute parton distributions through the use of boosted correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge from lattice QCD, within the framework of Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). This approach circumvents the need for Wilson lines, potentially enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of lattice calculations. In this work, we present the first exploratory implementation of the Coulomb gauge method for calculating nucleon unpolarized, helicity, and transversity parton distribution functions (PDFs). The calculations are performed on a Highly-Improved-Staggered-Quark ensemble with lattice spacing $a = 0.06$ fm, volume $L_s^3 \times L_t=48^3\times 64$, and valence pion mass $m_π=300$ MeV, employing boosted nucleon states with momenta up to 3.04 GeV. Our lattice predictions for the valence-quark PDFs -- extracted from the real part of the correlators -- show good convergence with increasing nucleon momentum and are compatible with the most recent global analyses for all spin structures. On the other hand, the full-quark-channel PDFs obtained from the imaginary part of the correlators exhibit discrepancies between the two large nucleon momenta considered, although the results at the higher momentum are consistent with phenomenology. The discrepancies are likely driven by stronger excited-state contamination in the imaginary matrix elements, which is consistent with the observation in the literature. Overall, this work demonstrates the efficacy of the Coulomb gauge approach for nucleon PDFs and serves as a benchmark for its broader applications.

Generalized Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD with Asymmetric Momentum Transfer: Tensor Case

The calculation of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in lattice QCD was traditionally done by calculating matrix elements in the symmetric frame. Recent advancements have significantly reduced computational costs by calculating these matrix elements in the asymmetric frame, allowing us to choose the momentum transfer to be in either the initial or final states only. The theoretical methodology requires a new parametrization of the matrix element to obtain Lorentz-invariant amplitudes, which are then related to the GPDs. The formulation and implementation of this approach have already been established for the unpolarized and helicity GPDs. Building upon this idea, we extend this formulation to the four leading-twist quark transversity GPDs ($H_T$, $E_T$, $\widetilde{H}_T$, $\widetilde{E}_T$). We also present numerical results for zero skewness using an $N_f=2+1+1$ ensemble of twisted mass fermions with a clover improvement. The light quark masses employed in these calculations correspond to a pion mass of about 260 MeV. Furthermore, we include a comparison between the symmetric and asymmetric frame calculations to demonstrate frame independence of the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes. Analysis of the matrix elements in the asymmetric frame is performed at several values of the momentum transfer squared, $-t$, ranging from 0.17 GeV$^2$ to 2.29 GeV$^2$.

Temperature Dependence of Heavy Quark Diffusion from (2+1)-flavor Lattice QCD

We present a lattice determination of the heavy-quark diffusion coefficient in (2+1)-flavor QCD with almost physical quark masses. The momentum and spatial diffusion coefficients are extracted for a wide temperature range, from $T=163$ MeV to $10$ GeV. The results are in agreement with previous works from the HotQCD collaboration, and show fast thermalization of the heavy quark inside the QGP. Near the chiral crossover temperature $T_c\simeq150$ MeV, our results are close to the AdS/CFT estimation computed at strong coupling.

Quarkonium Spectroscopy in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

The properties of bound states are fundamental to hadronic spectroscopy and play a central role in the transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In a strongly coupled QGP (sQGP), the interplay of temperature, binding energy and large collisional widths of the partons poses formidable challenges in evaluating the in-medium properties of hadronic states and their eventual melting. In particular, the existence of heavy quarkonia in the QGP is a long-standing problem that is hard to solve by considering their spectral properties on the real-energy axis. We address this problem by analyzing in-medium thermodynamic quarkonium $T$-matrices in the complex energy plane. We first validate this method in vacuum, where the $T$-matrix poles of observed states are readily identified. When deploying this approach to recent self-consistently calculated $T$-matrices in the QGP, we find that poles in the complex energy plane can persist to surprisingly large temperatures, depending on the strength of the in-medium interactions. While the masses and widths of the pole positions are precisely defined, the notion of a binding energy is not due to the absence of thresholds caused by the (large) widths of the underlying anti-/quark spectral functions. Our method thus provides a new and definitive quantum-mechanical criterion to determine the melting temperature of hadronic states in the sQGP while increasing the accuracy in the theoretical determination of transport parameters.

Generalized susceptibilities and the properties of charm degrees of freedom across the QCD crossover temperature

We study the generalized charm susceptibilities in 2+1 flavor QCD on the lattice at several lattice spacings. We show that, below the chiral crossover, these susceptibilities are well described by the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model if charmed hadrons not listed in tables of the Particle Data Group are included. However, the HRG description abruptly breaks down just above the chiral crossover. To understand this, we use a model for the charm pressure in which it is expressed as the sum of partial pressures from charmed baryons, charmed mesons, and charm quarks. We present continuum estimates of these partial pressures and find that, while the partial pressures of charmed mesons and baryons drop below their respective HRG predictions, the charm quark pressure becomes non-zero above the chiral crossover.

Lattice study of correlators for quarkonium decay

While there has been a lot of progress in developing a formalism for the study of quarkonia in QGP, a nonperturbative study is still difficult. For bottomonia, where the system size is much less than the inverse temperature, the interaction of the system with the medium can be approximated by a dipole interaction with the color electric field. The decay of the quarkonia can be connected to a correlation function of the color electric field. We present preliminary results from a lattice study of the relevant color electric field correlator. The structure of the correlator, and its difference from the corresponding correlator studied for heavy quark diffusion, is discussed.

Lattice study of correlators of chromoelectric fields for heavy quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma

We perform a lattice calculation of the correlators of two chromoelectric fields in the adjoint representation connected by adjoint Wilson lines at non-zero temperature. These correlators arise in the study of quarkonium dynamics and of adjoint heavy quark diffusion in deconfined matter. We work in SU(3) gauge theory using either gradient flow or multi-level algorithms for noise reduction, and discuss the renormalization of the correlators on the lattice. We find that a Casimir factor rescaling relates the adjoint correlators corresponding to the diffusion of an adjoint heavy quark and the octet-octet quarkonium transitions to the chromoelectric correlator in the fundamental representation describing the diffusion of a heavy quark.

Thermodynamics of charmed hadrons across chiral crossover from lattice QCD

We use up to fourth-order charm fluctuations and their correlations with net baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness fluctuations, calculated within the framework of lattice QCD, to study the continuum partial pressure contributions of charmed baryons and mesons. We show that, at and below the chiral crossover temperature, these partial pressures receive enhanced contributions from experimentally unobserved charmed hadrons predicted by the Quark Model. Additionally, we demonstrate that at the chiral crossover, the Hadron Resonance Gas description breaks down, signaling the modification of open charm hadrons and thereby implying the onset of charm deconfinement. We present evidence for the survival of low-lying non-radial $1S$ and $1P$ hadron-like excitations above the chiral crossover, which hints at the sequential melting of charmed hadrons. Finally, we investigate the continuum partial pressure contribution of charm quark-like excitation that emerges at the chiral crossover and calculate its temperature-dependent in-medium mass.

Three-dimensional Imaging of Pion using Lattice QCD: Generalized Parton Distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of $x$-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer $-t$. The calculations are based on an $N_f=2+1$ gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer $-t$.

Moments of Axial-Vector GPD from Lattice QCD: Quark Helicity, Orbital Angular Momentum, and Spin-Orbit Correlation

In this work, we present a lattice QCD calculation of the Mellin moments of the twist-2 axial-vector generalized parton distribution (GPD), $\widetilde{H}(x,ξ,t)$, at zero skewness, $ξ$, with multiple values of the momentum transfer, $t$. Our analysis employs the short-distance factorization framework on ratio-scheme renormalized quasi-GPD matrix elements. The calculations are based on an $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions ensemble with clover improvement, a lattice spacing of $a = 0.093$ fm, and a pion mass of $m_π= 260$ MeV. We consider both the iso-vector and iso-scalar cases, utilizing next-to-leading-order perturbative matching while omitting the disconnected contributions and gluon mixing in the iso-scalar case. For the first time, we determine the Mellin moments of $\widetilde{H}$ up to the fifth order. From these moments, we discuss the quark helicity and orbital angular momentum contributions to the nucleon spin, as well as the spin-orbit correlations of the quarks. Additionally, we perform a Fourier transform over the momentum transfer, which allows us to explore the spin structure in the impact-parameter space.

Strong coupling in (2+1+1)-flavor QCD

The strong coupling $α_\mathrm{s}$ can be obtained from the static energy as shown in previous lattices studies. For short distances, the static energy can be calculated both on the lattice with the use of Wilson line correlators, and with the perturbation theory up to three loop accuracy with leading ultrasoft log resummation. Comparing the perturbative expression and lattice data allows for precise determination of $α_\mathrm{s}(m_Z)$. We will present preliminary results for the determination of $α_\mathrm{s} {(M_Z)}$ in (2+1+1)-flavor QCD using the configurations made availableby the MILC-collaboration with smallest lattice spacing reaching 0.0321fm.
