Color Screening Melts Quarkonium

We calculate quarkonium spectral functions in a quark-gluon plasma using a potential model based on full QCD lattice calculations of the free energy of static quark-antiquark pair. We estimate the binding energy and the thermal width of different quarkonium states. The estimated upper limit for the dissociation temperatures is considerably lower than the ones suggested in the recent literature.

Properties of quark gluon plasma from lattice calculations

I discuss lattice QCD calculations of the properties of strongly interacting matter at finite temperature, including the determination of the transition temperature Tc, equation of state, different static screening lengths and quarkonium spectral functions. The lattice data suggest that at temperatures above 2Tc many properties of the quark gluon plasma can be understood using weak coupling approach, although non-perturbative effects due to static magnetic fields are significant in some quantities.

Quarkonium correlators at finite temperature and potential models

We discuss the calculations of quarkonium spectral functions in potential models and their implications for the interpretation of the lattice data on quarkonium correlators. In particular, we find that melting of different quarkonium states does not lead to significant change in the Euclidean time correlators. The large change of the quarkonium correlators above deconfinement observed in the scalar and axial-vector channels appears to be due to the zero mode contribution.

Describing Charmonium Correlation Functions in Euclidean Time

We present a detailed investigation of the quark mass-dependence of charmonium correlators in Euclidean-time obtained using a potential model, as well as the comparison with results on isotropic lattice calculations performed at several lattice spacings.

S-Wave Quarkonia in Potential Models

We discuss S-wave quarkonia correlators and spectral function using the Wong-potential, and show that these do not agree with the lattice results.

Quarkonia Correlators Above Deconfinement

We study the quarkonia correlators above deconfinement using the potential model with screened temperature-dependent potentials. We find that while the qualitative features of the spectral functions, such as the survival of the 1S state, can be reproduced by potential models, the temperature dependence of the correlators disagree with the recent lattice data.

Heavy Quark Diffusion from the Lattice

We study the diffusion of heavy quarks in the Quark Gluon Plasma using the Langevin equations of motion and estimate the contribution of the transport peak to the Euclidean current-current correlator. We show that the Euclidean correlator is remarkably insensitive to the heavy quark diffusion coefficient and give a simple physical interpretation of this result using the free streaming Boltzmann equation. However if the diffusion coefficient is smaller than $\sim 1/(πT)$, as favored by RHIC phenomenology, the transport contribution should be visible in the Euclidean correlator. We outline a procedure to isolate this contribution.

Heavy Quarkonia Survival in Potential Model

We investigate the quarkonia correlators in QCD with no light quarks within a potential model with different screened potentials. Our results for the temperature dependence of the charmonium and bottomonium correlators are qualitatively consistent with existing and preliminary lattice results. We identify however, a much reacher structure in the correlators than the one seen on the lattice.

Charmonia at finite momenta in a deconfined plasma

Lattice studies of charmonium systems have indicated that in a deconfined gluonic plasma ground state charmonia survive as bound states upto temperatures \~ 2 Tc. After surveying the methodologies used in reaching these results, we examine the behavior of these systems when the bound state is in motion with respect to the heatbath frame. We find that the finite momenta charmonia show medium modifications when the medium is deconfined; in particular, a modification of the energy-momentum dispersion relation is indicated.

Charmonium systems after the deconfinement transition

The behavior of charmonia after the deconfinement transition is investigated on quenched lattices. Analysis of temporal correlators on fine lattices at temperatures upto 3 T_c show that the J/psi and eta_c survive the deconfinement transition with little significant changes, and survive as bound states at least upto 2.25 T_c. The spatially excited chi_c states suffer serious system modifications, maybe dissolution, already a little above T_c.

Behavior of Charmonium Systems after Deconfinement

We present a study of charmonia in hot gluonic plasma, for temperatures upto three times the deconfinement transition temperature Tc. q \bar{q} systems with quark masses close to the charm mass and different spin-parity quantum numbers were studied on very fine isotropic lattices. The analysis of temporal correlators, and spectral functions constructed from them, shows that the J/psi and eta_c survive up to quite high temperatures, with little observable change up to 1.5 Tc, and then gradually weakening and disappearing by 3 Tc. For the scalar and axial vector channels, serious modifications are induced by the hot medium already close to Tc, possibly dissociating the mesons by 1.1 Tc.

Lattice calculations of meson correlators and spectral functions at finite temperature

I review recent progress in relating meson spectral function to imaginary time correlation function at finite temperature calculated on isotropic as well as on anisotropic lattices. Special attention is payed for the lattice artifacts present in calculation of meson spectral functions. Results in the case of light quarks as well as heavy quarks are reviewed which indicate in particular that even in the chiral limit meson spectral functions have non-trivial structure and the ground state quarkonia survive up to temperature 1.5T_c

A Study of Charmonium Systems across the Deconfinement Transition

We present results from lattice studies of charmonium systems near the deconfinement transition temperature. On quenched isotropic lattices with lattice spacings between 0.02 and 0.05 fm, bar{q} q systems with quark masses close to the charm mass and with different spin-parity quantum numbers are studied in the temperature range 0.9 Tc - 3 Tc. Results for temporal correlators of local operators, and the spectral functions constructed from them, are discussed. For the pseudoscalar and vector channels, the correlators are observed to change very little across the deconfinement transition, unlike in the case of the light quarks.

Screening in Hot Non-Abelian Plasma

This thesis is devoted to the study of the screening masses in hot non-Abelian theories. Section 1 contain a brief introduction to the topic. In section 2 a detailed overview of the screening phenomena and their applications is given. In section 3 the screening masses are defined through the coupled gap equations. Section 4 deals with the determination of the screening masses of hot SU(2) gauge theory in the framework of the 3d lattice adjoint Higgs model considered as an effective theory. Finally in section 5 the screening masses of hot SU(2) Higgs model are examined.
