Transformer-based operator learning framework for self-energy in strongly correlated systems

We introduce $Σ$-Attention, a Transformer-based operator-learning framework to address a key computational challenge in correlated materials. Our approach utilizes an Encoder-Only Transformer as an ansatz to approximate the self-energy operator of strongly correlated electronic systems. By creating a batched dataset that combines results from three complementary approaches: many-body perturbation theory, strong-coupling expansion, and exact diagonalization, each effective in specific parameter regimes, $Σ$-Attention is applied to learn a universal approximation for the self-energy operator that is valid across all regimes. This hybrid strategy leverages the strengths of existing methods while relying on the transformer's ability to generalize beyond individual limitations. More importantly, the scalability of the Transformer architecture allows the learned self-energy to be extended to systems with larger sizes, leading to much improved computational scaling. Using the 1D Hubbard model, we demonstrate that $Σ$-Attention can accurately predict the Matsubara Green's function and hence effectively captures the Mott transition at finite temperature. Our framework offers a promising and scalable pathway for studying strongly correlated systems with many possible generalizations.

Monte Carlo Methods in the Manifold of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Wave Functions

We explore the possibility to implement random walks in the manifold of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions. The goal is to extend state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo approaches, in particular the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo technique, to systems where finite pairing order parameters or complex pairing mechanisms, e.g., Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing or triplet pairing, may be expected. Leveraging the flexibility to define a vacuum state tailored to the physical problem, we discuss a method to use imaginary-time evolution of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states to compute ground state correlations, extending beyond situations spanned by current formalisms. Illustrative examples are provided.

Quantum Weyl-Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Beginning from the conventional square-lattice nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, we allow the $J_x$ and $J_y$ couplings to be anisotropic, with their values depending on the bond orientation. The emergence of anisotropic, bond-dependent, couplings should be expected to occur naturally in most antiferromagnetic compounds which undergo structural transitions that reduce the point-group symmetry at lower temperature. Using the spin-wave approximation, we study the model in several parameter regimes by diagonalizing the reduced Hamiltonian exactly, and computing the edge spectrum and Berry connection vector, which show clear evidence of localized topological charges. We discover phases that exhibit Weyl-type spin-wave dispersion, characterized by pairs of degenerate points and edge states, as well as phases supporting lines of degeneracy. We also identify a parameter regime in which there is an exotic state hosting gapless linear spin-wave dispersions with different longitudinal and transverse spin-wave velocities. Topological Superconductivity in a two-dimensional Weyl SSH model

We study the emergence of topological superconductivity in a two-dimensional (2D) Weyl system, composed of stacked Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. A previous analysis of the model showed that the addition of an attractive Hubbard interaction between spinful electrons leads to a superconducting state that has an intricate pairing structure, but is topologically trivial. Here we consider a pairing interaction that couples spinless fermions on opposite sublattices within the same unit cell. We observe that this physically motivated, momentum-independent pairing interaction induces a topological superconducting state, characterized by a gap function with a non-trivial phase, as well as Majorana and Fermi arc edge states along the edge perpendicular to the direction of the SSH dimerization. In addition, we observe a transition as a function of pairing interaction strength and chemical potential, indicated by a change in the sign of the topological charge carried by each of the four Bogoliubov-Weyl nodes.

Weyl Nodal-Ring Semimetallic Behavior and Topological Superconductivity in Crystalline Forms of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Chains

We consider a three-dimensional model of coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. The analytically soluble model discussed here reliably reproduces the features of the band structure of crystalline polyacetylene as obtained from density-functional theory. We show that when a certain inter-chain coupling is sufficiently increased, the system develops a ring of Weyl nodes. We argue that such an increase could be achieved experimentally by intercalation or extreme pressure. With the addition of a simple intra-orbital pairing term we find that the system supports an exotic superconducting state with drumhead surface states and annular Majorana states localized on the surface. In addition to suggesting a novel real material realization of a nodal ring semimetal and possibly topological superconductivity, our results provide a new perspective on the SSH model, demonstrating that a simple extension of this broadly-impacting model can once again provide fundamental insights on the topological behavior of condensed matter systems.

Exotic Superfluid Phases in Spin Polarized Systems on Optical Lattices

Leveraging cutting-edge numerical methodologies, we study the ground state of the two-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas in an optical lattice. We focus on systems at high density and small spin polarization, corresponding to the parameter regime believed to be most favorable to the formation of the elusive Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phase. Our systematic study of large lattice sizes, hosting nearly $500$ atoms, provides strong evidence of the stability of the FFLO state in this regime, as well as a high-accuracy characterization of its properties. Our results for the density correlation function reveal the existence of density order in the system, suggesting the possibility of an intricate coexistence of long-range orders in the ground state. The ground-state properties are seen to differ significantly from the standard mean-field description, providing a compelling avenue for future theoretical and experimental explorations of the interplay between interaction and superfluidity in an exotic phase of matter.

A numerically exact study of Weyl superconductivity

We study the interplay of interactions and topology in a pseudo-spin Weyl system, obtained from a minimally modified Hubbard model, using the numerically exact auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method complemented by mean-field theory. We find that the pseudo-spin plays a key role in the pairing mechanism, and its effect is reflected in the structure of the pairing amplitude. An attractive on-site interaction leads to pairing between quasiparticles carrying opposite spin and opposite topological charge, resulting in the formation of real-spin singlet pairs that are a mixture of pseudo-spin singlet and pseudo-spin triplet. Our results provide a detailed characterization of the exotic pairing behavior in this system, and represent an important step towards a more complete understanding of superconductivity in the context of topological band structures, which will help guide searches for topological superconductivity in real materials and ultracold atoms.

Calculating ground state properties of correlated fermionic systems with BCS trial wave functions in Slater determinant path-integral approaches

We introduce an efficient and numerically stable technique to make use of a BCS trial wave function in the computation of correlation functions of strongly correlated quantum fermion systems. The technique is applicable to any projection approach involving paths of independent-fermion propagators, for example in mean-field or auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations. Within AFQMC, in the absence of the sign problem, the methodology allows the use of a BCS reference state which can greatly reduce the required imaginary time of projection, and improves Monte Carlo sampling efficiency and statistical accuracy for systems where pairing correlations are important. When the sign problem is present, the approach provides a powerful generalization of the constrained-path AFQMC technique which usually uses Slater determinant trial wave functions. As a demonstration of the capability of the methodology, we present benchmark results for the attractive Hubbard model, both spin-balanced (no sign problem) and with a finite spin polarization (with sign problem).

Accurate computations of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in interacting systems: from the Fermi gas to real materials

We describe the treatment of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in interacting many-fermion systems within the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo framework, and present a set of illustrative results. These include numerically exact calculations on the ground-state properties of the spin-balanced, attractive two-dimensional Fermi gas, as well as a study of a tight-binding Hamiltonian with repulsive interaction. These systems are formally connected via the Hubbard Hamiltonian with SOC, but cover different physics ranging from superfluidity and triplet pairing to SOC in real materials in the presence of strong interactions in localized orbitals. We carry out detailed benchmark studies of the method in the latter case when an approximation is needed to control the sign problem for repulsive Coulomb interactions. The methods presented here provide an approach for predictive computations in materials to study the interplay of SOC and strong correlation.

Ultracold atoms in a square lattice with spin-orbit coupling: Charge order, superfluidity, and topological signatures

We present an $\textit{ab initio}$, numerically exact study of attractive fermions in square lattices with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The ground state of this system is a supersolid, with co-existing charge and superfluid order. The superfluid is composed of both singlet and triplet pairs induced by spin-orbit coupling. We perform large-scale calculations using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo to provide the first full, quantitative description of the charge, spin, and pairing properties of the system. In addition to characterizing the exotic physics, our results will serve as essential high-accuracy benchmarks for the intense theoretical and especially experimental efforts in ultracold atoms to realize and understand an expanding variety of quantum Hall and topological superconductor systems.

Rashba spin-orbit coupling, strong interactions, and the BCS-BEC crossover in the ground state of the two-dimensional Fermi Gas

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between strong interaction and SOC in a tunable, disorder-free system. We present here precision ab initio numerical results on the two-dimensional, unpolarized, uniform Fermi gas with attractive interactions and Rashba SOC. Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo and incorporating recent algorithmic advances, we carry out exact calculations on sufficiently large system sizes to provide accurate results systematically as a function of experimental parameters. We obtain the equation of state, the momentum distributions, the pseudo-spin correlations and the pairing wave functions. Our results help illuminate the rich pairing structure induced by SOC, and provide benchmarks for theory and guidance to future experimental efforts.

FFLO order in ultra-cold atoms in three-dimensional optical lattices

We investigate different ground-state phases of attractive spin-imbalanced populations of fermions in 3-dimensional optical lattices. Detailed numerical calculations are performed using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to determine the ground-state properties systematically for different values of density, spin polarization and interaction strength. We first consider the high density and low polarization regime, in which the effect of the optical lattice is most evident. We then proceed to the low density and high polarization regime where the effects of the underlying lattice are less significant and the system begins to resemble a continuum Fermi gas. We explore the effects of density, polarization and interaction on the character of the phases in each regime and highlight the qualitative differences between the two regimes. In the high-density regime, the order is found to be of Larkin-Ovchinnikov type, linearly oriented with one characteristic wave vector but varying in its direction with the parameters. At lower densities the order parameter develops more structures involving multiple wave vectors.
