Field-Induced Local Excitations Causing Zero-Magnetization Plateaus in Antiferromagnets of Antiferromagnetic Spin Dimers Under Magnetic Field

Certain antiferromagnets composed of antiferromagnetic spin dimers exhibit a zero-magnetization plateau despite that the single-ion anisotropy of their magnetic ions is negligible. The cause for this observation was investigated by analyzing how a magnetic field affects the energy spectrum of an antiferromagnetic chain composed of antiferromagnetic spin dimers made up of two spin-half ions and by carrying out specific heat measurements for potassium copper chloride as a function magnetic field at 2 K.

Magnetism of coupled spin tetrahedra in ilinskite-type KCu$_{5}$O$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_2$Cl$_3$

Synthesis, thermodynamic properties, and microscopic magnetic model of ilinskite-type KCu$_{5}$O$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_2$Cl$_3$ built by corner-sharing Cu$_4$ tetrahedra are reported, and relevant magnetostructural correlations are discussed. Quasi-one-dimensional magnetic behavior with the short-range order around 50\,K and the absence of long-range order down to at least 2\,K is observed experimentally and explained in terms of weakly coupled spin ladders (tubes) with a complex topology formed upon fragmentation of the tetrahedral network. This fragmentation is rooted in the non-trivial effect of the SeO$_3$ groups that render the Cu--O--Cu superexchange strongly ferromagnetic.

CaCu2(SeO3)2Cl2: spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain compound with complex frustrated interchain couplings

We report the crystal structure, magnetization measurements, and band-structure calculations for the spin-1/2 quantum magnet CaCu2(SeO3)2Cl2. The magnetic behavior of this compound is well reproduced by a uniform spin-1/2 chain model with the nearest-neighbor exchange of about 133 K. Due to the peculiar crystal structure, spin chains run in the direction almost perpendicular to the structural chains. We find an exotic regime of frustrated interchain couplings owing to two inequivalent exchanges of 10 K each. Peculiar superexchange paths grant an opportunity to investigate bond-randomness effects under partial Cl-Br substitution.
