Hybrid Microwave-Cavity Heat Engine

We propose and analyze the use of hybrid microwave cavities as quantum heat engines. A possible realization consists of two macroscopically separated quantum dot conductors coupled capacitively to the fundamental mode of a microwave cavity. We demonstrate that an electrical current can be induced in one conductor through cavity-mediated processes by heating up the other conductor. The heat engine can reach Carnot efficiency with optimal conversion of heat to work. When the system delivers the maximum power, the efficiency can be a large fraction of the Carnot efficiency. The heat engine functions even with moderate electronic relaxation and dephasing in the quantum dots. We provide detailed estimates for the electrical current and output power using realistic parameters.

Current-voltage correlations in interferometers

We investigate correlations of current at contacts and voltage fluctuations at voltage probes coupled to interferometers. The results are compared with correlations of current and occupation number fluctuations at dephasing probes. We use a quantum Langevin approach for the average quantities and their fluctuations. For higher order correlations we develop a stochastic path integral approach and find the generating functions of voltage or occupation number fluctuations. We also derive a generating function for the joint distribution of voltage or occupation number at the probe and current fluctuations at a terminal of a conductor. For energy independent scattering we found earlier that the generating function of current cumulants in interferometers with a one-channel dephasing or voltage probe are identical. Nevertheless, the distribution function for voltage and the distribution function for occupation number fluctuations differ, the latter being broader than that of former in all examples considered here.

Voltage and dephasing probes: a full counting statistics discussion

Voltage and dephasing probes introduce incoherent inelastic and incoherent quasi-elastic scattering into a coherent mesoscopic conductor. We discuss in detail the concepts of voltage and dephasing probes and develop a full counting statistics approach to investigate their effect on the transport statistics. The formalism is applied to several experimentally relevant examples. A comparison of different probe models and with procedures like phase averaging over an appropriate phase distribution shows that there is a perfect equivalence between the models for the case of one single-channel probe. Interestingly, the appropriate phase distribution function is found to be uniform. A uniform distribution is provided by a chaotic cavity with a long dwell time. The dwell time of a chaotic cavity plays a role similar to the charge response time of a voltage or dephasing probe. For multi-channel or multiple probes the transport statistics of voltage and dephasing probes differs and the equivalence with phase averaging is similarly lost.

Entanglement in Anderson Nanoclusters

We investigate the two-particle spin entanglement in magnetic nanoclusters described by the periodic Anderson model. An entanglement phase diagram is obtained, providing a novel perspective on a central property of magnetic nanoclusters, namely the temperature dependent competition between local Kondo screening and nonlocal Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida spin ordering. We find that multiparticle entangled states are present for finite magnetic field as well as in the mixed valence regime and away from half filling. Our results emphasize the role of charge fluctuations.

Andreev drag effect in ferromagnetic-normal-superconducting systems

We investigate conductances and current correlations in a system consisting of a normal multichannel conductor connected to one superconducting and two ferromagnetic electrodes. For antiparallel orientation of the ferromagnet polarizations, current injection from one ferromagnet can, due to Andreev reflection, lead to a net drag of current from the second ferromagnet toward the superconductor. We present the conditions for the Andreev drag in terms of the degree of lead polarizations, contact conductances and spin-flip scattering. Remarkably, both equilibrium and nonequilibrium zero-frequency current correlations between the ferromagnets become positive even in the presence of spin relaxation.

Full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflection

We derive the full counting statistics of charge transfer through a voltage biased superconducting junction. We find that for measurement times much longer than the inverse Josephson frequency, the counting statistics describes a correlated transfer of quanta of multiple electron charges, each quantum associated with the transfer of a single quasiparticle. An expression for the the counting statistics in terms of the quasiparticle scattering amplitudes is derived.

Controlling Josephson transport by manipulation of Andreev levels in ballistic mesoscopic junctions

We discuss how to control dc Josephson current by influencing the structure and nonequilibrium population of Andreev levels via external electrostatic gates, external current injection and electromagnetic radiation. In particular we will consider the "giant" Josephson current in "long" SIS tunnel junctions and the regular and anomalous nonequilibrium Josephson currents in three terminal SNS junctions. We will briefly discuss applications to the Josephson field effect transistor (JOFET) and to the newly invented Josephson interference transistor (JOINT).
