Odd-particle number random phase approximation and extensions: Applications to particle and hole states around $^{16}$O

The hole-state random phase approximation (hRPA) and the particle-state random phase approximation (pRPA) for systems like odd $A$ nuclei are discussed. These hRPA and pRPA are formulated based on the Hartree-Fock ground state. An extension of hRPA and pRPA based on a correlated ground state is given using time-dependent density-matrix theory. Applications to the single-particle states around $^{16}$O are presented. It is shown that inclusion of ground-state correlation affects appreciably the results of hRPA and pRPA. The question of the coupling of the center of mass motion of the core to the particle (hole) is also discussed.

Quartetting in Nuclear Matter

A general theory for the condensation of strongly bound quartets in infinite nuclear matter is presented. Critical temperatures for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter are evaluated. A fully nonlinear theory for the quartet order parameter, based on an analogy of the Gorkov approach to pairing, is presented and solved. The strong qualitative difference with pairing is pointed out.

Thomas-Fermi studies of pairing in inhomogeneous systems: nuclear and cold atom systems at overflow

A novel Thomas-Fermi (TF) approach to inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi-systems is presented and shown that it works well also in cases where the Local Density Approximation (LDA) breaks down. The novelty lies in the fact that the semiclassical approximation is applied to the pairing matrix elements not implying a local version of the chemical potential as with LDA. Applications will be given to the generic fact that if a fermionic superfluid in the BCS regime overflows from a narrow container into a much wider one, pairing is substantially reduced at the overflow point. Two examples pertinent to the physics of the outer crust of neutron stars and superfluid fermionic atoms in traps will be presented. The TF results will be compared to quantal and LDA ones.

Self-Consistent RPA based on a Many-Body Vacuum

Self-Consistent RPA is extended in a way so that it is compatable with a variational ansatz for the ground state wave function as a fermionic many-body vacuum. Employing the usual equation of motion technique, we arrive at extended RPA equations of the Self Consistent RPA structure. In principle the Pauli principle is, therefore, fully respected. However, the correlation functions entering the RPA matrix can only be obtained from a systematic expansion in powers of some combinations of RPA amplitudes. We demonstrate for a model case that this expansion may converge rapidly.

BEC-BCS Crossover and the Liquid-Gas Phase Transition in Hot and Dense Nuclear Matter

The effect of nucleon-nucleon correlations in symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature is studied beyond BCS theory. Starting from a Hartree-Fock description of nuclear matter with the Gogny effective interaction, we add correlations corresponding to the formation of preformed pairs and scattering states above the superfluid critical temperature within the in-medium T-matrix approach, which is analogous to the Nozieres-Schmitt-Rink theory. We calculate the critical temperature for a BEC superfluid of deuterons, of a BCS superfluid of nucleons, and in the crossover between these limits. The effect of the correlations on thermodynamic properties (equation of state, energy, entropy) and the liquid-gas phase transition is discussed. Our results show that nucleon-nucleon correlations beyond BCS play an important role for the properties of nuclear matter, especially in the low-density region.

Critical temperature for $α$-particle condensation in asymmetric nuclear matter

The critical temperature for $α$-particle condensation in nuclear matter with Fermi surface imbalance between protons and neutrons is determined. The in-medium four-body Schrödinger equation, generalizing the Thouless criterion of the BCS transition, is applied using a Hartree-Fock wave function for the quartet projected onto zero total momentum in matter with different chemical potentials for protons and neutrons.

Many Body Approach for Quartet Condensation in Strong Coupling

The theory for condensation of higher fermionic clusters is developed. Fully selfconsistent nonlinear equations for the quartet order parameter in strongly coupled fermionic systems are established and solved. The breakdown of the quasiparticle picture is pointed out. Derivation of numerically tractable approximation is described. The momentum projected factorisation ansatz of Ref. \cite{slr09} for the order parameter is employed again. As a definite example the condensation of $α$ particles in nuclear matter is worked out.

Density-matrix formalism with three-body ground-state correlations

A density-matrix formalism which includes the effects of three-body ground- state correlations is applied to the standard Lipkin model. The reason to consider the complicated three-body correlations is that the truncation scheme of reduced density matrices up to the two-body level does not give satisfactory results to the standard Lipkin model. It is shown that inclusion of the three-body correlations drastically improves the properties of the ground states and excited states. It is pointed out that lack of mean-field effects in the standard Lipkin model enhances the relative importance of the three-body ground-state correlations. Formal aspects of the density-matrix formalism such as a relation to the variational principle and the stability condition of the ground state are also discussed. It is pointed out that the three-body ground-state correlations are necessary to satisfy the stability condition.

Internal One-Particle Density Matrix for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Finite Number of Particles in a Harmonic Potential

Investigations on the internal one-particle density matrix in the case of Bose-Einstein condensates with a finite number ($N$) of particles in a harmonic potential are performed. We solve the eigenvalue problem of the Pethick-Pitaevskii-type internal density matrix and find a fragmented condensate. On the contrary the condensate Jacobi-type internal density matrix gives complete condensation into a single state. The internal one-particle density matrix is, therefore, shown to be different in general for different choices of the internal coordinate system. We propose two physically motivated criteria for the choice of the adequate coordinate systems which give us a unique answer for the internal one-particle density matrix. One criterion is that in the infinite particle number limit ($N=\infty$) the internal one-particle density matrix should have the same eigenvalues and eigenfunctions as those of the corresponding ideal Bose-Einstein condensate in the laboratory frame. The other criterion is that the coordinate of the internal one-particle density matrix should be orthogonal to the remaining $(N - 2)$ internal coordinates. This second criterion is shown to imply the first criterion. It is shown that the internal Jacobi coordinate system satisfies these two criteria while the internal coordinate system adopted by Pethick and Pitaevskii for the construction of the internal one-particle density matrix does not. It is demonstrated that these two criteria uniquely determine the internal one-particle density matrix which is identical to that calculated with the Jacobi coordinates. The relevance of this work concerning $α$-particle condensates in nuclei, as well as bosonic atoms in traps, is pointed out.

Dineutron correlations in quasi two-dimensional systems in a simplified model and possible relation to neutron-rich nuclei

Two-neutron correlation in the $^1S$ channel in quasi two-dimensional (2D) neutron systems at zero temperature is studied by means of the BCS theory with finite-range effective nuclear forces. The dineutron correlation in low density neutron systems confined in an infinite slab is investigated in a simplified model that neutron motion of one direction is frozen. When the slab is thin enough, two neutrons form a tightly bound dineutron with a small size in the quasi-2D system, and a Bose dineutron gas is found in low density limit. With increase of Fermi momentum, the neutron system changes from the Bose-gas phase to the superfluid Cooper pair phase. The density dependence of the neutron pairing shows the BCS-BEC crossover phenomena at finite low-density region. In the transition region, the size shrinking of neutron pair and enhancement of pairing gap are found. The relation to dineutron correlation at surface of neutron-rich nuclei is also discussed.

Pair-Breaking in Rotating Fermi Gases

We study the pair-breaking effect of rotation on a cold Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region. In the framework of BCS theory, which is supposed to be qualitatively correct at zero temperature, we find that in a trap rotating around a symmetry axis, three regions have to be distinguished: (A) a region near the rotational axis where the superfluid stays at rest and where no pairs are broken, (B) a region where the pairs are progressively broken with increasing distance from the rotational axis, resulting in an increasing rotational current, and (C) a normal-fluid region where all pairs are broken and which rotates like a rigid body. Due to region B, density and current do not exhibit any discontinuities.

Bose-Fermi Pair Correlations in Attractively Interacting Bose-Fermi Atomic Mixtures

We study static properties of attractively interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures of uniform atomic gases at zero temperature. Using Green's function formalism we calculate boson-fermion scattering amplitude and fermion self-energy in the medium to lowest order of the hole line expansion. We study ground state energy and pressure as functions of the scattering length for a few values of the boson-fermion mass ratio $m_b/m_f$ and the number ratio $N_b/N_f$. We find that the attractive contribution to energy is greatly enhanced for small values of the mass ratio. We study the role of the Bose-Fermi pair correlations in the mixture by calculating the pole of the boson-fermion scattering amplitude in the medium. The pole shows a standard quasiparticle dispersion for a Bose-Fermi pair, for $m_b/m_f\geq 1$. For small values of the mass ratio, on the other hand, a Bose-Fermi pair with a finite center-of-mass momentum experiences a strong attraction, implying large medium effects. In addition, we also study the fermion dispersion relation. We find two dispersion branches with the possibility of the avoided crossings. This strongly depends on the number rario $N_b/N_f$.

Vertex renormalization in weak decays of Cooper pairs and cooling compact stars

At temperatures below the critical temperature of superfluid phase transition baryonic matter emits neutrinos by breaking and recombination of Cooper pairs formed in the condensate. The strong interactions in the nuclear medium modify the weak interaction vertices and the associated neutrino loss rates. We study these modifications non-perturbatively by summing infinite series of particle-hole loops in the S-wave superfluid neutron matter. The pairing and particle-hole interactions in neutron matter are described in the framework of the BCS and Fermi-liquid theories derived from microscopic interactions. Consistent with the f-sum rule, the leading order contribution to the polarization tensor arises at O(q^2) in the small momentum transfer, q, expansion. The associated neutrino emission rate is parametrically suppressed compared to its one-loop counterpart by a factor of the order of 5\times 10^{-3}, the parameter being the baryon recoil in units of temperature.

Alpha matter on a lattice

We obtain the equation of state of interacting alpha matter and the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of alpha particles within an effective scalar field theory. We start from a non-relativistic model of uniform alpha matter interacting with attractive two-body and repulsive three-body potentials and reformulate this model as a O(2) symmetric scalar ϕ^6 field theory with negative quartic and positive sextic interactions. Upon restricting the Matsubara sums, near the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation, to the zeroth order modes we further obtain an effective classical theory in three spatial dimensions. The phase diagram of the alpha matter is obtained from simulations of this effective field theory on a lattice using local Monte-Carlo algorithms.

Single $α$-particle orbits and Bose-Einstein condensation in $^{12}$C

The $α$-bosonic properties such as single-$α$ orbits and occupation numbers in $J^π$=$0^+$, $2^+$, $1^-$ and $3^-$ states of $^{12}$C around the $3α$ threshold are investigated with the semi-microscopic $3α$ cluster model. As in other studies, we found that the $0^+_2$ ($2^+_2$) state has dilute-$3α$-condensate-like structure in which the $α$ particle is occupied in the single $S$ ($D$) orbit with about 70% (80%) probability. The radial behaviors of the single-$α$ orbits as well as the occupation numbers are discussed in detail in comparison with those for the $0^+_1$ and $2^+_1$ states together with the $1^-_1$ and $3^-_1$ states.

Screening of nuclear pairing in nuclear and neutron matter

The screening potential in the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$ pairing channels in neutron and nuclear matter in different approximations is discussed. It is found that the vertex corrections to the potential are much stronger in nuclear matter than in neutron matter.

Self-Consistent Random Phase Approximation - Application to the Hubbard Model for finite number of sites

Within the 1D Hubbard model linear closed chains with various numbers of sites are considered in Self Consistent Random Phase Approximation (SCRPA). Excellent results with a minimal numerical effort are obtained for 2+4n sites cases, confirming earlier results with this theory for other models. However, the 4n sites cases need further considerations. SCRPA solves the two sites problem exactly. It therefore contains the two electrons and high density Fermi gas limits correctly.

Pairing in nuclear systems with effective Gogny and V_low-k interactions

The pairing properties of nuclear systems are a sensitive probe of the effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We compare the 1S0 pairing gaps in nuclear and neutron matter derived from the phenomenological Gogny interaction and a renormalization group motivated low-momentum V_low-k interaction extracted from realistic interactions. We find that the pairing gaps predicted by these interactions are in an excellent agreement in a wide range of sub-nuclear densities. The close agreement between the predictions of the effective forces remains intact in the case where the single particle spectra in neutron and nuclear matter are renormalized within the Hartree-Fock theory.
