High-Fidelity Simultaneous Detection of Trapped Ion Qubit Register

Qubit state detection is an important part of a quantum computation. As number of qubits in a quantum register increases, it is necessary to maintain high fidelity detection to accurately measure the multi-qubit state. Here we present experimental demonstration of high-fidelity detection of a multi-qubit trapped ion register with average single qubit detection error of 4.2(1.5) ppm and a 4-qubit state detection error of 17(2) ppm, limited by the decay lifetime of the qubit, using a novel single-photon-sensitive camera with fast data collection, excellent temporal and spatial resolution, and low instrumental crosstalk.

Quantum-Assisted Optical Interferometers: Instrument Requirements

It has been recently suggested that optical interferometers may not require a phase-stable optical link between the stations if instead sources of quantum-mechanically entangled pairs could be provided to them, enabling extra-long baselines and benefiting numerous topics in astrophysics and cosmology. We developed a new variation of this idea, proposing that photons from two different sources could be interfered at two decoupled stations, requiring only a slow classical connection between them. We show that this approach could allow high-precision measurements of the relative astrometry of the two sources, with a simple estimate giving angular resolution of $10 \ μ$as in a few hours' observation of two bright stars. We also give requirements on the instrument for these observations, in particular on its temporal and spectral resolution. Finally, we discuss possible technologies for the instrument implementation and first proof-of-principle experiments.

Novel imaging technique for $α$-particles using a fast optical camera

A new imaging technique for $α$-particles using a fast optical camera focused on a thin scintillator is presented. As $α$-particles interact in a thin layer of LYSO fast scintillator, they produce a localized flash of light. The light is collected with a lens to an intensified optical camera, Tpx3Cam, with single photon sensitivity and excellent spatial & temporal resolutions. The interactions of photons with the camera is reconstructed by means of a custom algorithm, capable of discriminating single photons using time and spatial information.

Multivariate Discrimination in Quantum Target Detection

We describe a simple multivariate technique of likelihood ratios for improved discrimination of signal and background in multi-dimensional quantum target detection. The technique combines two independent variables, time difference and summed energy, of a photon pair from the spontaneous parametric down-conversion source into an optimal discriminant. The discriminant performance was studied in experimental data and in Monte-Carlo modelling with clear improvement shown compared to previous techniques. As novel detectors become available, we expect this type of multivariate analysis to become increasingly important in multi-dimensional quantum optics.

Counting of Hong-Ou-Mandel Bunched Optical Photons Using a Fast Pixel Camera

The uses of a silicon-pixel camera with very good time resolution ($\sim$nanosecond) for detecting multiple, bunched optical photons is explored. We present characteristics of the camera and describe experiments proving its counting capabilities. We use a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source to generate correlated photon pairs, and exploit the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect in a fiber-coupled beam splitter to bunch the pair onto the same output fiber. It is shown that the time and spatial resolution of the camera enables independent detection of two photons emerging simultaneously from a single spatial mode.

Multidimensional quantum-enhanced target detection via spectro-temporal correlation measurements

In this work we investigate quantum-enhanced target detection in the presence of large background noise using multidimensional quantum correlations between photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Until now similar experiments have only utilized one of the photon pairs' many degrees of freedom such as temporal correlations and photon number correlations. Here, we utilized both temporal and spectral correlations of the photon pairs and achieved over an order of magnitude reduction to the background noise and in turn significant reduction to data acquisition time when compared to utilizing only temporal modes. We believe this work represents an important step in realizing a practical, real-time quantum-enhanced target detection system. The demonstrated technique will also be of importance in many other quantum sensing applications and quantum communications.

PymePix: A python library for SPIDR readout of Timepix3

PymePix is a new Python 3 library that provides control and acquisition for the Timepix3-SPIDR hardware. The rich set of data-structures and intuitive routines reduces time and coding effort to quickly configure, acquire, and visualize data from Timepix3. The highly extensible high-performance data-pipeline allows for alteration of the Timepix3 datastream into a form that is convinient for the user. This library is intended to be easily inserted into a standard scientific software stack as well as to allow for more direct interaction of Timepix3 with interactive flavors of Python. Included with the library are two example programs using PymePix: pymepix-acq is a command line control and acquisition program that can capture UDP packets and decode them into pixels and triggers. The second is PymePix-Viewer, an online control and data-acquisition program for general use, but with features geared toward mass-spectroscopy and ion imaging.

Spatial characterization of photonic polarization entanglement using a Tpx3Cam intensified fast-camera

Scalable technologies to characterize the performance of quantum devices are crucial to creating large quantum networks and quantum processing units. Chief among the resources of quantum information processing is entanglement. Here we describe the full temporal and spatial characterization of polarization-entangled photons produced by Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversions using an intensified high-speed optical camera, Tpx3Cam. This novel technique allows for precise determination of Bell inequality parameters with minimal technical overhead, as well as novel characterization methods of the spatial distribution of entangled quantum information. This could lead to multiple applications in Quantum Information Science, opening new perspectives for the scalability of quantum experiments.

Coincidence velocity map imaging using Tpx3Cam, a time stamping optical camera with 1.5 ns timing resolution

We demonstrate a coincidence velocity map imaging apparatus equipped with a novel time stamping fast optical camera, Tpx3Cam, whose high sensitivity and ns timing resolution allow for simultaneous position and time-of-flight detection. This single detector design is simple, flexible and capable of highly differential measurements. We show detailed characterization of the camera and its application in strong field ionization experiments.
