Geometric obstructions for $\xi$-fillings of 3-manifolds

We consider the realisation problem for normal 1-types of 4-manifolds with a given boundary. More precisely, given a normal 1-type $\xi$ and closed 3-dimensional $\xi$-manifold $Y$, does there exist a compact 4-dimensional $\xi$-manifold with boundary $Y$? We describe a three stage obstruction theory for the existence of such a 4-manifold, with our main contribution being a `tertiary' obstruction that we describe geometrically via Wall's quadratic self-intersection form.

Link concordance implies link homotopy

We show that link concordance implies link homotopy for immersions of codimension at least two. As a consequence, we prove that every link $\sqcup^r S^n \hookrightarrow S^{n+2}$ is link homotopically trivial for $n\geq 2$, that is, there is a {\em link} homotopy that (for each time parameter) maps distinct component $n$-spheres disjointly into $S^{n+2}$. In other words, beyond the classical dimension (of embedded circles in $S^3$) there are no `linking modulo knotting' phenomena in codimension two. To date, this was only known for $n=2$. In our proofs we follow, expand, and complete unpublished notes of the third author developing stratified Morse theory for generic immersions, where the $d$-th stratum is given by points that have $d$ preimages under the generic immersion. We discuss gradient like vector fields, their strata preserving flows, and Cerf theory. This generalizes the case of embeddings, as studied by Perron, Sharpe, and Rourke, and expanded by the first two authors. Two vital operations in Cerf theory are the rearrangement and cancellation of critical points. In the setting of stratified theory, there are additional rearrangement and cancellation obstructions arising from intersections of ascending and descending membranes for critical points of the Morse function restricted to various strata. We show that both additional obstructions vanish in codimension at least three, implying a smooth proof of Hudson's result that embedded concordance implies isotopy. In codimension at least two, we show that only the rearrangement obstruction vanishes and we introduce finger moves that eliminate the cancellation obstruction. This is done carefully and only at the expense of introducing new self-intersection points into the components of the immersion. Therefore, our moves keep distinct components disjoint and hence preserve the link homotopy class.

Homotopy versus isotopy: 2-spheres in 5-manifolds

In this note we give a complete obstruction for two homotopic embeddings of a 2-sphere into a 5-manifold to be isotopic. The results are new even though the methods are classical, the main tool being the elimination of double points via a level preserving Whitney move in codimension~$3$. Moreover, we discuss how this recovers a particular case of a result of Dax on metastable homotopy groups of embedding spaces. It follows that ``homotopy implies isotopy'' for 2-spheres in simply-connected 5-manifolds and for 2-spheres admitting algebraic dual 3-spheres.

A new approach to light bulb tricks: Disks in 4-manifolds

For a 4-manifold $M$ and a knot $k\colon\mathbb{S}^1\hookrightarrow\partial M$ with dual sphere $G\colon\mathbb{S}^2\hookrightarrow\partial M$, we compute the set $\mathbb{D}(M;k)$ of smooth isotopy classes of neat embeddings $\mathbb{D}^2\hookrightarrow M$ with boundary $k$, using an invariant going back to Dax. Moreover, we construct a group structure on $\mathbb{D}(M;k)$ and show that it is usually neither abelian nor finitely generated. We recover all previous results for isotopy classes of spheres with framed duals and relate the group $\mathbb{D}(M;k)$ to the mapping class group of $M$.

Embedding surfaces in 4-manifolds

We prove a surface embedding theorem for 4-manifolds with good fundamental group in the presence of dual spheres, with no restriction on the normal bundles. The new obstruction is a Kervaire-Milnor invariant for surfaces and we give a combinatorial formula for its computation. For this we introduce the notion of band characteristic surfaces.

A space level light bulb theorem in all dimensions

Given a $d$-dimensional manifold $M$ and a knotted sphere $s\colon\mathbb{S}^{k-1}\hookrightarrow\partial M$ with $1\leq k\leq d$, for which there exists a framed dual sphere $G\colon\mathbb{S}^{d-k}\hookrightarrow\partial M$, we show that the space of neat embeddings $\mathbb{D}^k\hookrightarrow M$ with boundary $s$ can be delooped by the space of neatly embedded $(k-1)$-disks, with a normal vector field, in the $d$-manifold obtained from $M$ by attaching a handle to $G$. This increase in codimension significantly simplifies the homotopy type of such embedding spaces, and is of interest also in low-dimensional topology. In particular, we apply the work of Dax to describe the first interesting homotopy group of these embedding spaces, in degree $d-2k$. In a separate paper we use this to give a complete isotopy classification of 2-disks in a 4-manifold with such a boundary dual.

The Kervaire-Milnor invariant in the stable classification of spin 4-manifolds

We consider the role of the Kervaire--Milnor invariant in the classification of closed, connected, spin 4-manifolds, typically denoted by $M$, up to stabilisation by connected sums with copies of $S^2 \times S^2$. This stable classification is detected by a spin bordism group over the classifying space $B\pi$ of the fundamental group. Part of the computation of this bordism group via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence is determined by a collection of codimension two Arf invariants. We show that these Arf invariants can be computed by the Kervaire--Milnor invariant evaluated on certain elements of $\pi_2(M)$. In particular this yields a new stable classification of spin $4$-manifolds with 2-dimensional fundamental groups, namely those for which $B\pi$ admits a finite 2-dimensional CW-complex model.

Algebraic criteria for stable diffeomorphism of spin 4-manifolds

We study closed, connected, spin 4-manifolds up to stabilisation by connected sums with copies of $S^2 \times S^2$. For a fixed fundamental group, there are primary, secondary and tertiary obstructions, which together with the signature lead to a complete stable classification. The primary obstruction exactly detects $\mathbb{CP}^2$-stable diffeomorphism and was previously related to algebraic invariants by Kreck and the authors. In this article we formulate conjectural relationships of the secondary and tertiary obstructions with algebraic invariants: the secondary obstruction should be determined by the (stable) equivariant intersection form and the tertiary obstruction via a $\tau$-invariant recording intersection data between 2-spheres, with trivial algebraic self-intersection, and their Whitney discs. We prove our conjectures for the following classes of fundamental groups: groups of cohomological dimension at most 3, right-angled Artin groups, abelian groups, and finite groups with quaternion or abelian 2-Sylow subgroups. We apply our theory to give a complete algebraic stable classification of spin $4$-manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/2$.

The 4-dimensional disc embedding theorem and dual spheres

We modify the proof of the disc embedding theorem for $4$-manifolds, which appeared as Theorem 5.1A in the book "Topology of 4-manifolds" by Freedman and Quinn, in order to construct geometrically dual spheres. These were claimed in the statement but not constructed in the proof. We also prove Proposition 1.6 from the Freedman-Quinn book regarding generic homotopies of discs or spheres in a 4-manifolds, which was not proven there.

Clasper Concordance, Whitney towers and repeating Milnor invariants

We show that for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$, a link $L\subset S^3$ bounds a degree $k$ Whitney tower in the 4-ball if and only if it is \emph{$C_k$-concordant} to the unlink. This means that $L$ is obtained from the unlink by a finite sequence of concordances and degree $k$ clasper surgeries. In our construction the trees associated to the Whitney towers coincide with the trees associated to the claspers. As a corollary to our previous obstruction theory for Whitney towers in the 4-ball, it follows that the $C_k$-concordance filtration of links is classified in terms of Milnor invariants, higher-order Sato-Levine and Arf invariants. Using a new notion of $k$-repeating twisted Whitney towers, we also classify a natural generalization of the notion of link homotopy, called twisted \emph{self $C_k$-concordance}, in terms of $k$-repeating Milnor invariants and $k$-repeating Arf invariants.

Homotopy versus isotopy: spheres with duals in 4-manifolds

David Gabai recently proved a smooth 4-dimensional "Light Bulb Theorem" in the absence of 2-torsion in the fundamental group. We extend his result to 4-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group by showing that an invariant of Mike Freedman and Frank Quinn gives the complete obstruction to "homotopy implies isotopy" for embedded 2-spheres which have a common geometric dual. The invariant takes values in an Z/2Z-vector space generated by elements of order 2 in the fundamental group and has applications to unknotting numbers and pseudo-isotopy classes of self-diffeomorphisms. Our methods also give an alternative approach to Gabai's theorem using various maneuvers with Whitney disks and a fundamental isotopy between surgeries along dual circles in an orientable surface.

Four-manifolds up to connected sum with complex projective planes

We show that closed, connected 4-manifolds up to connected sum with copies of the complex projective plane are classified in terms of the fundamental group, the orientation character and an extension class involving the second homotopy group. For fundamental groups that are torsion free or have one end, we reduce this further to a classification in terms of the homotopy 2-type.

The Group of Disjoint 2-Spheres in 4-Space

We compute the group of link homotopy classes of link maps of two 2-spheres into 4-space. It turns out to be free abelian, generated by geometric constructions applied to the Fenn-Rolfsen link map and detected by two self-intersection invariants introduced by Paul Kirk in this setting. As a corollary, we show that any link map with one topologically embedded component is link homotopic to the unlink. Our proof introduces a new basic link homotopy, which we call a Whitney homotopy, that shrinks an embedded Whitney sphere constructed from four copies of a Whitney disk. Freedman's disk embedding theorem is applied to get the necessary embedded Whitney disks, after constructing sufficiently many accessory spheres as algebraic duals for immersed Whitney disks. To construct these accessory spheres and immersed Whitney disks we use the algebra of metabolic forms over the group ring Z[Z], and introduce a number of new 4-dimensional constructions, including maneuvers involving the boundary arcs of Whitney disks.

The round handle problem

We present the Round Handle Problem, proposed by Freedman and Krushkal. It asks whether a collection of links, which contains the Generalised Borromean Rings, are slice in a 4-manifold R constructed from adding round handles to the four ball. A negative answer would contradict the union of the surgery conjecture and the s-cobordism conjecture for 4-manifolds with free fundamental group.

Cochran's $\beta^i$ invariants via twisted Whitney towers

We show that Tim Cochran's invariants $\beta^i(L)$ of a $2$-component link $L$ in the $3$--sphere can be computed as intersection invariants of certain 2-complexes in the $4$--ball with boundary $L$. These 2-complexes are special types of twisted Whitney towers, which we call {\em Cochran towers}, and which exhibit a new phenomenon: A Cochran tower of order $2k$ allows the computation of the $\beta^i$ invariants for all $i\leq k$, i.e. simultaneous extraction of invariants from a Whitney tower at multiple orders. This is in contrast with the order $n$ Milnor invariants (requiring order $n$ Whitney towers) and consistent with Cochran's result that the $\beta^i(L)$ are integer lifts of certain Milnor invariants.

Stable classification of 4-manifolds with 3-manifold fundamental groups

We study closed, oriented 4-manifolds whose fundamental group is that of a closed, oriented, aspherical 3-manifold. We show that two such 4-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if and only if they have the same w_2-type and their equivariant intersection forms are stably isometric. We also find explicit algebraic invariants that determine the stable classification for spin manifolds in this class.
