Optical and magnetic excitations in the underscreened quasi-quartet Kondo lattice

The underscreened Kondo lattice consisting of a single twofold degenerate conduction band and a CEF split 4f-electron quasi-quartet has non-conventional quasiparticle dispersions obtained from the constrained mean-field theory. An additional genuinely heavy band is found in the main hybridization band gap of the upper and lower hybridzed bands whose heavy effective mass is controlled by the CEF splitting. Its presence should profoundly influence the dynamical optical and magnetic response functions. In the former, the onset of the optical conductivity is not the main hybridisation energy but the much lower Kondo energy scale which appears in the direct transitions to the additional heavy band. The dynamical magnetic response is also strongly modified by the in-gap heavy band which can lead to unconventional resonant excitations that may be interpreted as coherent CEF-Kondo lattice magnetic exciton bands. Their instability at low temperature signifies the onset of induced excitonic magnetism in the underscreened Kondo lattice.

Impact of Fe substitution on the electronic structure of URu$_2$Si$_2$

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.2 and 0.3 with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) and 4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). NIXS shows that the substitution of Fe has no impact on the symmetry of the ground-state wave function. In HAXPES we find no shift of spectral weight that would be indicative for a change of the 5$f$-electron count. Consequently, changes in the exchange interaction $\cal{J}$ due to substitution must be minor so that the conjecture of chemical pressure seems unlikely. An alternative scenario is discussed, namely the formation of long range magnetic order due the substitution induced local enhancement of the magnetization in the vicinity of the $f$-electron ions while the overall electronic structure remains unchanged.

Multipolar order and excitations in rare-earth boride Kondo systems

We review the cubic rare-earth boride series which displays diverse electronic states like localized 4f electron multiplets split by the crystal electric field (CEF), itinerant heavy-fermion quasiparticle bands of the Kondo lattice as well as gapped Kondo insulator or mixed-valent semiconductor states. Fairly exotic states may appear due to the 'hidden' order of multipoles carried by degenerate CEF multiplets, in addition to magnetic order present in many RB6 (R = rare earth) compounds. Most prominent are CeB6 and its La-diluted alloys which exhibit antiferro-quadrupolar and octupolar ordering enabled by the cubic G8 quartet state. The associated collective excitations are multipolar waves with a dispersion characteristic for the underlying order and accessible by inelastic neutron scattering. This localized multipolar-moment picture of R-borides is complemented by the itinerant Kondo-lattice approach. Collective spin exciton modes inside the hybridization gap around symmetry points of the Brillouin zone may appear. This has been observed in heavy-fermion metal CeB6 and in particular in the Kondo insulators YbB12 and SmB6. The latter is also the prime candidate for a strongly correlated topological insulator.

A RIXS investigation of the crystal-field splitting of Sm$^{3+}$ in SmB$_6$

The crystal-field (CF) splitting of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state of Sm$^{3+}$ in the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB$_6$ has been determined with high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Sm M$_5$ edge. The valence selectivity of RIXS allows isolating the crystal-field-split excited multiplets of the Sm$^{3+}$ (4$f^5$) configuration from those of Sm$^{2+}$ (4$f^6$) in intermediate valent SmB$_6$. The very large energy range of RIXS allows the crystal-field analysis of a high lying multiplet at about 2.4\,eV that has the same total angular momentum $J$ as the ground state so that ambiguities due to the elastic tail can be avoided. We find that the $Γ_7$ doublet and $Γ_8$ quartet of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state are split by $Δ^{CF}_{^6H_{5/2}}$\,=\,20$\pm$10\,meV which sets an upper limit for the 4$f$ band width. This indicates an extremely large mass renormalization from the band structure value, pointing out the need to consider the coefficients of fractional parentage for the hopping of the 4$f$ electrons.

Heavy quasiparticle bands in the underscreened quasiquartet Kondo lattice

We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but the bandwidth is controled by the size of the CEF splitting. Furthermore several new indirect and direct hybridztion gaps may be identified. By solving the selfconsistency equation we calculate the CEF- splitting and exchange dependence of effective Kondo low energy scale, hybridization gaps and band widths. We also derive the quasiparticle spectral densities and their partial orbital contributions. We suggest that the two-orbital KL model can exhibit mixed CEF/Kondo excitonic magnetism.

Edge currents as a probe of the strongly spin-polarized topological noncentrosymmetric superconductors

Recently the influence of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling has been studied in novel topological superconductors such as half-Heuslers and artificial hetero-structures. We investigate the effect of Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the band structure and topological properties of a two-dimensional noncentrosymetric superconductor. For this goal, the topological helical edge modes are analyzed for different spin-orbit couplings as well as for several superconducting pairing symmetries. To explore the transport properties, we examine the response of the spin-polarized edge states to an exchange field in a superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructure. The broken chiral symmetry causes the uni-directional currents at opposite edges.

Néel temperature and reentrant H-T phase diagram of quasi-2D frustrated magnets

In quasi-2D quantum magnets the ratio of Néel temperature $T_\text N$ to Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_\text{CW}$ is frequently used as an empirical criterion to judge the strength of frustration. In this work we investigate how these quantities are related in the canonical quasi-2D frustrated square or triangular $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Using the self-consistent Tyablikov approach for calculating $T_\text N$ we show their dependence on the frustration control parameter $J_2/J_1$ in the whole Néel and columnar antiferromagnetic phase region. We also discuss approximate analytical results. In addition the field dependence of $T_\text N(H)$ and the associated possible reentrance behavior of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations is investigated. These results are directly applicable to a class of quasi-2D oxovanadate antiferromagnets. We give clear criteria to judge under which conditions the empirical frustration ratio $f=Θ_\text{CW}/T_\text N$ may be used as measure of frustration strength in the quasi-2D quantum magnets.

Frustrated two dimensional quantum magnets

We overview physical effects of exchange frustration and quantum spin fluctuations in (quasi-) two dimensional (2D) quantum magnets ($S=1/2$) with square, rectangular and triangular structure. Our discussion is based on the $J_1$-$J_2$ type frustrated exchange model and its generalizations. These models are closely related and allow to tune between different phases, magnetically ordered as well as more exotic nonmagnetic quantum phases by changing only one or two control parameters. We survey ground state properties like magnetization, saturation fields, ordered moment and structure factor in the full phase diagram as obtained from numerical exact diagonalization computations and analytical linear spin wave theory. We also review finite temperature properties like susceptibility, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect using the finite temperature Lanczos method. This method is powerful to determine the exchange parameters and g-factors from experimental results. We focus mostly on the observable physical frustration effects in magnetic phases where plenty of quasi-2D material examples exist to identify the influence of quantum fluctuations on magnetism.

Direct bulk sensitive probe of 5f symmetry in URu2Si2

The second-order phase transition into a hidden order phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$ goes along with an order parameter which is still a mystery, despite 30 years of research. However, it is understood that the symmetry of the order parameter must be related to the symmetry of the low lying local electronic $f$-states. Here we present results of a novel spectroscopy, namely core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). This method allows for the measurement of local high-multipole excitations and it is bulk sensitive. The observed anisotropy of the scattering function unambiguously shows that the 5$f$ ground state wave function is composed mainly, but essentially not purely, of the $Γ_1$ with majority $J_z$ =$|4\rangle$ + $|-4\rangle$ and/or $Γ_2$ singlet states.

Surface state tunneling signatures in two-component superconductor UPt$_3$

Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging of Bogoliubov excitations in quasi-two dimensional unconventional superconductors has become a powerful technique for measuring the superconducting gap and its symmetry. Here, we present the extension of this method to three-dimensional superconductors and analyze the expected QPI spectrum for the two-component heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ whose gap structure is still controversial. Starting from a 3D electronic structure and the three proposed chiral gap models $E_{1g,u}$ or $E_{2u}$, we perform a slab calculation that determines the 2D continuum Bogoliubov- de Gennes (BdG) surface quasiparticle bands and in addition the in-gap flat-band Andreev bound states that lead to surface Weyl arcs connecting the projected gap nodes. Both features are very distinct for the three models, in particular the most prominent $E_{2u}$ candidate is singled out by the existence of {\it two} Weyl arcs due to the double monopole node points. The signature of these distinct surface bound and continuum states that is left in QPI is derived and discussed. We show that it provides a fingerprint that may finally determine the true nodal structure of UPt$_3$ superconductor.

Momentum space imaging of the FFLO state

In a magnetic field superconductors (SC) with small orbital effect exhibit the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase above the Pauli limiting field. It is characterized by Cooper pairs with finite center of mass momentum and is stabilized by the gain in Zeeman energy of depaired electrons in the imbalanced Fermi gas. The ground state is a coherent superposition of paired and depaired states. This concept, although central to the FFLO state lacks a direct experimental confirmation. We propose that STM quasiparticle interference (QPI) can give a direct momentum space image of the depaired states in the FFLO wave function. For a proof of principle we investigate a 2D single orbital tight binding model with a SC s-wave order parameter. Using the equilibrium values of pair momentum and SC gap we calculate the spectral function of quasiparticles and associated QPI spectrum as function of magnetic field. We show that the characteristic depaired Fermi surface parts appear as a fingerprint in the QPI spectrum of the FFLO phase and we demonstrate its evolution with field strength. Its observation in STM experiments would constitute a direct proof for FFLO ground state wave function.

Resonant spin excitations in unconventional heavy fermion superconductors and Kondo lattice compounds

The heavy quasiparticle bands in Kondo materials which originate in the hybridization of f- and conduction electrons exhibit numerous, sometimes coexisting, broken symmetry phases. Most notable are unconventional superconductivity, itinerant small moment antiferromagnetism and hidden order of higher order multipoles of f-electrons which all lead to a gapping of the heavy bands. In rare cases the chemical potential lies within the hybridization gap and the ground state is a Kondo semiconductor without ordering. The dynamical magnetic response of such gapped f-electron systems has been investigated with inelastic neutron scattering. It was found that collective spin exciton modes which are due to residual quasiparticle interactions appear below the threshold of superconducting or hidden order gap or directly the hybridzation gap. The spin exciton resonance is commonly located around a zone boundary vector $Q$ with nesting properties in the normal state. In the superconducting case its appearance gives a strong criterion for the gap symmetry requesting a sign change $Δ_{{\bf k}+{\bf Q}}=-Δ_{\bf k}$ due to the coherence factors. Therefore this many body effect with fundamental importance may also be used as a tool to discriminate between proposed gap models. While the spin resonance has been observed for many compounds we restrict our discussion here exclusively to the small group of f-electron superconductors CeCoIn5, CeCu2Si2 and UPd2Al3, hidden order Kondo compounds CeB6 and URu2Si2 as well as the Kondo semiconductor YbB12 .

Collective spin resonance excitation in the gapped itinerant multipole hidden order phase of URu2Si2

An attractive proposal for the hidden order (HO) in the heavy electron compound URu2Si2 is an itinerant multipole order of high rank. It is due to the pairing of electrons and holes centered on zone center and boundary, respectively in states that have maximally different total angular momentum components. Due to the pairing with commensurate zone boundary ordering vector the translational symmetry is broken and a HO quasiparticle gap opens below the transition temperature T_HO. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has demonstrated that for T<T_HO the collective magnetic response is dominated by a sharp spin exciton resonance at the ordering vector Q that is reminiscent of spin exciton modes found inside the gap of unconventional superconductors and Kondo insulators. We use an effective two-orbital tight binding model incorporating the crystalline electric field effect to derive closed expressions for quasiparticle bands reconstructed by the multipolar pairing terms. We show that the magnetic response calculated within that model exhibits the salient features of the resonance found in INS. We also use the calculated dynamical susceptibility to explain the low temperature NMR relaxation rate.

Thermodynamics of anisotropic triangular magnets with ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange

We investigate thermodynamic properties like specific heat $c_{V}$ and susceptibility $χ$ in anisotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ triangular quantum spin systems ($S=1/2$). As a universal tool we apply the finite temperature Lanczos method (FTLM) based on exact diagonalization of finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions. We use clusters up to $N=28$ sites where the thermodynamic limit behavior is already stably reproduced. As a reference we also present the full diagonalization of a small eight-site cluster. After introducing model and method we discuss our main results on $c_V(T)$ and $χ(T)$. We show the variation of peak position and peak height of these quantities as function of control parameter $J_2/J_1$. We demonstrate that maximum peak positions and heights in Néel phase and spiral phases are strongly asymmetric, much more than in the square lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Our results also suggest a tendency to a second side maximum or shoulder formation at lower temperature for certain ranges of the control parameter. We finally explicitly determine the exchange model of the prominent triangular magnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ from our FTLM results.

Hidden order symmetry and superconductivity in URu2Si2 investigated by quasiparticle interference

The hidden order (HO) in URu2Si2 has been determined as a high rank multipole formed by itinerant 5f-electrons with distinct orbital structure imposed by the crystalline electric field. Because this can lead to a considerable number of different multipoles it is of great importance to use microscopic techniques that are sensitive to their subtle physical differences. Here we investigate whether quasiparticle interference (QPI) method can distinguish between the two most frequently proposed HO parameter models: the even rank-4 hexadecapole and the odd-rank-5 dotriacontapole model. We obtain the quasiparticle dispersion and reconstructed Fermi surface in each HO phase adapting an effective two-orbital model of 5f bands that reproduces the main Fermi surface sheets of the para phase. We show that the resulting QPI spectrum reflects directly the effect of fourfold symmetry breaking in the rank-5 model which is absent in the rank-4 model. Therefore we suggest that QPI method should give a possibility of direct discrimination between the two most investigated models of HO in URu2Si2. Furthermore the signature of proposed chiral d-wave superconducting (SC) order parameter in QPI of the coexisting HO+SC phase is investigated.

Intrinsic conduction through topological surface states of insulating Bi$_2$Te$_3$ epitaxial thin films

Topological insulators represent a novel state of matter with surface charge carriers having a massless Dirac dispersion and locked helical spin polarization. Many exciting experiments have been proposed by theory, yet, their execution have been hampered by the extrinsic conductivity associated with the unavoidable presence of defects in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ bulk single crystals as well as impurities on their surfaces. Here we present the preparation of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films that are insulating in the bulk and the four-point probe measurement of the conductivity of the Dirac states on surfaces that are intrinsically clean. The total amount of charge carriers in the experiment is of order 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ only and mobilities up to 4,600 cm$^2$/Vs have been observed. These values are achieved by carrying out the preparation, structural characterization, angle-resolved and x-ray photoemission analysis, and the temperature dependent four-point probe conductivity measurement all in-situ under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. This experimental approach opens the way to prepare devices that can exploit the intrinsic topological properties of the Dirac surface states.

Quantum fluctuations in anisotropic triangular lattices with ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange

The Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is a prime example for a geometrically frustrated spin system. However most experimentally accessible compounds have spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. As a function of this anisotropy, ground states with different magnetic properties can be realized. Motivated by recent experimental findings on Cs$_{2}$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_{x}$, we discuss the full phase diagram of the anisotropic model with two exchange constants $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, including possible ferromagnetic exchange. Furthermore a comparison with the related square lattice model is carried out. We discuss the zero-temperature phase diagram, ordering vector, ground-state energy, and ordered moment on a classical level and investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations within the framework of spin-wave theory. The field dependence of the ordered moment is shown to be nonmonotonic with field and control parameter.

Gap function of hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs from quasiparticle interference spectrum

The pnictide superconductor SrPtAs has a hexagonal layered structure containing inversion symmetry. It is formed by stacking two inequivalent PtAs layers separated by Sr layers. The former have no local (in-plane) inversion symmetry and therefore a (layer-) staggered Rashba spin orbit coupling appears which splits the three Kramers degenerate bands into six quasi-2D bands. The symmetry of the superconducting state of SrPtAs is unknown. Three candidates, spin-singlet $A_{1g}$ and $E_g$ as well as triplet $A_{2u}$ states have been proposed. We predict the quasiparticle interference (QPI) spectrum for these gap functions in t-matrix Born approximation. We show that distinct differences in the pattern of characteristic QPI wave vectors appear. These results may be important to determine the gap symmetry of SrPtAs by STM-QPI method.
