E theory in seven dimensions

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation in its decomposition into the subalgebra GL(7)x SL(5) to find a seven dimensional theory. The resulting equations of motion essentially follow from the Dynkin diagram of E11 and if one restricts them to contain only the usual fields of supergravity and the derivatives with respect to the usual coordinates of spacetime then these are the equations of motion of seven dimensional supergravity.

E11, Brane Dynamics and Duality Symmetries

Following hep-th/0412336 we use the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation to construct brane dynamics. The brane moves through a spacetime which arises in the non-linear realisation from the vector representation and it contains the usual embedding coordinates as well as the world volume fields. The resulting equations of motion are first order in derivatives and can be thought of as duality relations. Each brane carries the full E11 symmetry and so the Cremmer-Julia duality symmetries. We apply this theory to find the dynamics of the IIA and IIB strings, the M2 and M5 branes, the IIB D3 brane as well as the one and two branes in seven dimensions.

An E11 invariant gauge fixing

We consider the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation which leads to a spacetime with tangent group that is the Cartan involution invariant subalgera of E11. We give an alternative derivation of the invariant tangent space metric that this space-time possesses and compute this metric at low levels in eleven, five and four dimensions. We show that one can gauge fix the non-linear realisation in an E11 invariant manner.

On the different formulations of the E11 equations of motion

The non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 with its vector representation leads to equation of motions for the fields graviton, three form, six form, dual graviton and the level four fields which correctly describe the degree of freedom of eleven dimensional supergravity at the linearised level. The equations with one derivative generically hold as equivalence relations and are often duality relations. From these equations, by taking derivatives, one can derive equations that are equations of motion of the familiar kind. The entire hierarchy of equations is E11 invariant and the construction does not require any steps beyond E11. We review these past developments with an emphasis on the features that have been overlooked in hep-th:1703.01305, whose alternative approach we also comment on.

E11, Romans theory and higher level duality relations

From the underlying non-linear realisation we compute the complete E11 invariant equations of motion in eleven dimensions, at the linearised level, up to and including level four in the fields. Thus we include the metric, the three and six forms, the dual graviton and three fields at level four. The fields are linked by a set of duality equations, which are first order in derivatives and transform into each other under the E11 symmetries. From these duality relations we deduce second order equations of motion, including those for the usual supergravity fields. As a result the on-shell degrees of freedom are those of the eleven dimensional supergravity. We also show that the level four fields provide an eleven dimensional origin of Romans theory and lead to a novel duality relation.

A brief review of E theory

I begin with some memories of Abdus Salam who was my PhD supervisor. After reviewing the theory of non-linear realisations and Kac-Moody algebras, I explain how to construct the non-linear realisation based on the Kac-Moody algebra E11 and its vector representation. I explain how this field theory leads to dynamical equations which contain an infinite number of fields defined on a space time with an infinite number of coordinates. I then show that these unique dynamical equations, when truncated to low level fields and the usual coordinates of space time, lead to precisely the equations of motion of eleven dimensional supergravity theory. By taking different group decompositions of E11 we find all the maximal supergravity theories, including the gauged maximal supergravities, and as a result the non-linear realisation should be thought of as a unified theory that is the low energy effective action for type II strings and branes. These results essentially confirm the E11 conjecture given many years ago.

E11 in 11D

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation in eleven dimensions and find the dynamical equations it predicts at low levels. These equations are completely determined by the non-linear realisation and when restricted to contain only the usual fields of supergravity and the usual space-time we find precisely the equations of motion of eleven dimensional supergravity. This paper extends the results announced in arXiv:1512.01644 and in particular it contains the contributions to the equations of motion that involve derivatives with respect to the level one generalised coordinates.

E11 must be a symmetry of strings and branes

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation in five and eleven dimensions and find the dynamical equations it predicts at low levels. Restricting these results to contain only the usual fields of supergravity and the generalised space-time to be the usual space-time we find the equations of motion of the five and eleven dimensional maximal supergravity theories. Since this non-linear realisation contains effects that are beyond the supergravity approximation and are thought to be present in an underlying theory we conclude that the low energy effective action of string and branes must possess an E11 symmetry.

E11 and exceptional field theory

We demonstrate that exceptional field theory is a truncation of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental as proposed in 2003. Evaluating the simple equations of the E11 approach, and using the commutators of the E11 algebra, we find the equations of exceptional field theory after making a radical truncation. This procedure does not respect any of the higher level E11 symmetries and so these are lost. We suggest that the need for the section condition in exceptional field theory could be a consequence of the truncation.

Gauge fields and infinite chains of dualities

We show that the particle states of Maxwell's theory, in $D$ dimensions, can be represented in an infinite number of ways by using different gauge fields. Using this result we formulate the dynamics in terms of an infinite set of duality relations which are first order in space-time derivatives. We derive a similar result for the three form in eleven dimensions where such a possibility was first observed in the context of E11. We also give an action formulation for some of the gauge fields. In this paper we give a pedagogical account of the Lorentz and gauge covariant formulation of the irreducible representations of the Poincaré group, used previously in higher spin theories, as this plays a key role in our constructions. It is clear that our results can be generalised to any particle.

Dual gravity and E11

We consider the equation of motion in the gravity sector that arises from the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental representation, denoted by l1, in four dimensions. This equation is first order in derivatives and at low levels relates the usual field of gravity to a dual gravity field. When the generalised space-time is restricted to be the usual four dimensional space-time we show that this equation does correctly describe Einstein's theory at the linearised level. We also comment on previous discussions of dual gravity.

Generalised vielbeins and non-linear realisations

We briefly review why the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of a group with one of its representations leads to a field theory defined on a generalised space-time equipped with a generalised vielbein. We give formulae, which only involve matrix multiplication, for the generalised vielbein, the Cartan forms and their transformations. We consider the generalised space-time introduced in 2003 in the context of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E(11) and its first fundamental representation. For this latter theory we give explicit expressions for the generalised vielbein up to and including the levels associated with the dual graviton in four, five and eleven dimensions and for the IIB theory in ten dimensions. We also compute the generalised vielbein, up to the analogous level, for the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of very extended SL(2) with its first fundamental representation, which is a theory associated with gravity in four dimensions.

Poisson equations, higher derivative automorphic forms and string parameter limits

This paper considers the higher derivative terms in the effective action of type II string theory and in particular the behaviour of the automorphic forms they contain in all the different possible limits of the string parameters. The automorphic forms are thought to obey Poisson equations which contain the Laplacian defined on the coset space to which the scalars fields belong and we compute this Laplacian in all the possible string theory limits. We also consider these Poisson equations in the decompactification limit of a single dimension and by making two assumptions, one on the generic form of this equation and the other on the behaviour of the automorphic forms in this limit, we find strong constraints on the allowed form of this differential equation. We show that these constraints allow one to recover much of what was previously known about the automorphic forms corresponding to terms in the effective action that have fourteen or fewer space-time derivatives in a simple way.

Generalised Space-time and Gauge Transformations

We consider the generalised space-time introduced by the author in 2003 in the context of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental representation. For all the fields we propose gauge transformations which are compatible with the underlying E11 structure. A crucial role is played by the generalised vielbein that the generalised space-time possess. We work out the explicit form of the gauge transformations, at low levels, in four, five and eleven dimensions.

Generalised BPS conditions

We write down two E11 invariant conditions which at low levels reproduce the known half BPS conditions for type II theories. These new conditions contain, in addition to the familiar central charges, an infinite number of further charges which are required in an underlying theory of strings and branes. We comment on the application of this work to higher derivative string corrections.

Parameters, limits and higher derivative type II string corrections

String theory in d dimensions has n+1=11-d parameters that may be thought of as being inherited from the geometry of an n+1 torus which may be used to construct the theory using dimensional reduction from eleven dimensions. We give the precise relationship between these parameters and the expectation values of the scalar fields that parameterise the E_{n+1} coset of the d dimensional theory. This allows us to examine all possible limits of the automorphic forms which occur as the coefficient functions of the higher derivative corrections to the d dimensional type II string effective action.

E11, generalised space-time and equations of motion in four dimensions

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental representation at low levels in four dimensions. We include the fields for gravity, the scalars and the gauge fields as well as the duals of these fields. The generalised space-time, upon which the fields depend, consists of the usual coordinates of four dimensional space-time and Lorentz scalar coordinates which belong to the 56-dimensional representation of E7. We demand that the equations of motion are first order in derivatives of the generalised space-time and then show that they are essentially uniquely determined by the properties of the E11 Kac-Moody algebra and its first fundamental representation. The two lowest equations correctly describe the equations of motion of the scalars and the gauge fields once one takes the fields to depend only on the usual four dimensional space-time.
