Spherical harmonics for the compactification of IIB supergravity on S_5

We give a detailed derivation of the spherical harmonics which correspond to the spectrum in the tables of the 1985 paper by Kim, Romans and the author on the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of IIB supergravity on $S_5$ to 5-dimensional maximal anti de Sitter supergravity. We show how all methods that have been used in the literature to obtain spectra if the internal space is $S_n$ can be derived from embedding $S_n$ in $R^{n+1}$. A crucial observation for spin 1/2 spherical harmonics is that one also needs a local Lorentz rotation if one transforms to polar or stereographic coordinates. The relation to the vector spherical harmonics of electromagnetism is also worked out.

One-loop results for kink and domain wall profiles at zero and finite temperature

Using dimensional regularization, we compute the one-loop quantum and thermal corrections to the profile of the bosonic 1+1-dimensional phi^4 kink, the sine-Gordon kink and the CP^1 kink, and higher-dimensional phi^4 kink domain walls. Starting from the Heisenberg field equation in the presence of the nontrivial kink background we derive analytically results for the temperature-dependent mean field which display the onset of the melting of kinks as the system is heated towards a symmetry restoring phase transition. The result is shown to simplify significantly when expressed in terms of a self-consistently defined thermal screening mass. In the case of domain walls, we find infrared singularities in the kink profile, which corresponds to interface roughening depending on the system size. Finally we calculate the energy density profile of phi^4 kink domain walls and find that in contrast to the total surface tension the local distribution requires composite operator renormalization in 3+1 dimensions.

Simple d=4 supergravity with a boundary

To construct rigidly or locally supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary actions, one needs an extension of the usual tensor calculus. Its key ingredients are the extended (F-, D-, etc.) density formulas and the rule for the decomposition of bulk multiplets into (co-dimension one) boundary multiplets. Working out these ingredients for d=4 N=1 Poincaré supergravity, we discover the special role played by R-symmetry (absent in the d=3 N=1 case we studied previously). The $U(1)_A$ R-symmetry has to be gauged which leads us to extend the old-minimal set of auxiliary fields S, P, A_μby a $U(1)_A$ compensator $a$. Our results include the ``F+A'' density formula, the ``Q+L+A'' formula for the induced supersymmetry transformations (closing into the standard d=3 N=1 algebra) and demonstration that the compensator $a$ is the first component of the extrinsic curvature multiplet. We rely on the superconformal approach which allows us to perform, in parallel, the same analysis for new-minimal supergravity.

Tensor calculus for supergravity on a manifold with boundary

Using the simple setting of 3D N=1 supergravity, we show how the tensor calculus of supergravity can be extended to manifolds with boundary. We present an extension of the standard F-density formula which yields supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary actions. To construct additional separately supersymmetric boundary actions, we decompose bulk supergravity and bulk matter multiplets into co-dimension one submultiplets. As an illustration we obtain the supersymmetric extension of the York-Gibbons-Hawking extrinsic curvature boundary term. We emphasize that our construction does not require any boundary conditions on off-shell fields. This gives a significant improvement over the existing orbifold supergravity tensor calculus.

Lectures on instantons

This is a self-contained set of lecture notes on instantons in (super) Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and in quantum mechanics. First the basics are derived from scratch: the regular and singular one-instanton solutions for Yang-Mills theories with gauge groups SU(2) and SU(N), their bosonic and fermionic zero modes, the path integral instanton measure, and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in Euclidean space. Then we discuss applications: the θ-angle of QCD, the solution of the U(1) problem, the way Higgs fields solve the large-instanton problem, and tunneling and phase transitions in quantum mechanics and in nonabelian gauge theories. These lecture notes are an extension of a review on Yang-Mills and D-instantons written in 2000 by both authors and A.Belitsky

Rigid supersymmetry with boundaries

We construct rigidly supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary actions, both in $x$-space and in superspace. For each standard supersymmetric bulk action a minimal supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary action follows from an extended $F$- or $D$-term formula. Additional separately supersymmetric boundary actions can be systematically constructed using co-dimension one multiplets (boundary superfields). We also discuss the orbit of boundary conditions which follow from the Euler-Lagrange variational principle.

Perturbative Quantum Corrections to the Supersymmetric CP^1 Kink with Twisted Mass

We present an explicit calculation of the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass and the two central charges of the kink solution of an N=(2,2) supersymmetric CP^1 model with twisted mass, using supersymmetry preserving dimensional regularization adapted to solitons. We find that the quantum corrections of the mass and one of the central charges are nontrivial (but saturate the BPS bound), while the other central charge receives no corrections. The nontrivial central charge correction corresponds to a quantum anomaly, which in our scheme appears as parity violation in the regulating extra dimension, and its magnitude is in agreement with exact results obtained by Dorey on the basis of a massive analog of mirror symmetry from a dual U(1) gauge theory, confirming also the recent work by Shifman, Vainshtein, and Zwicky.

Quantum Mass and Central Charge of Supersymmetric Monopoles - Anomalies, current renormalization, and surface terms

We calculate the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass and central charge of N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric monopoles in 3+1 dimensions. The corrections to the N=2 central charge are finite and due to an anomaly in the conformal central charge current, but they cancel for the N=4 monopole. For the quantum corrections to the mass we start with the integral over the expectation value of the Hamiltonian density, which we show to consist of a bulk contribution which is given by the familiar sum over zero-point energies, as well as surface terms which contribute nontrivially in the monopole sector. The bulk contribution is evaluated through index theorems and found to be nonvanishing only in the N=2 case. The contributions from the surface terms in the Hamiltonian are cancelled by infinite composite operator counterterms in the N=4 case, forming a multiplet of improvement terms. These counterterms are also needed for the renormalization of the central charge. However, in the N=2 case they cancel, and both the improved and the unimproved current multiplet are finite.

Soft-Gluon Production Due to a Gluon Loop in a Constant Chromo-Electric Background Field

We obtain an exact result for the soft gluon production and its p_T distribution due to a gluon loop in a constant chromo-electric background field E^a with arbitrary color. Unlike Schwinger's result for e^+e^- pair production in QED which depends only on one gauge invariant quantity, the Electric field E, we find that the p_T distribution of the gluons depend on two gauge invariant quantities, E^aE^a and [d_{abc}E^aE^bE^c]^2.

New developments in the quantization of supersymmetric solitons (kinks, vortices and monopoles)

We discuss the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass M and central charge Z of supersymmetric solitons: the kink, the vortex and the monopole. Contrary to previous expectations and published results, in each of these cases there are nonvanishing quantum corrections to the mass. For the N=1 kink and the N=2 monopole a new anomaly in Z rescues BPS saturation (M=Z); for the N=2 vortex, BPS saturation is rescued for two reasons: (i) the quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field acquire a nontrivial phase due to the winding of the classical solution, and (ii) a fermionic zero mode used in the literature is shown not to be normalizable.

Quantum corrections to mass and central charge of supersymmetric solitons

We review some recent developments in the subject of quantum corrections to soliton mass and central charge. We consider in particular approaches which use local densities for these corrections, as first discussed by Hidenaga Yamagishi. We then consider dimensional regularization of the supersymmetric kink in 1+1 dimensions and an extension of this method to a 2+1-dimensional gauge theory with supersymmetric abelian Higgs vortices as the solitons.

On the nature of the anomalies in the supersymmetric kink

We discuss the possibility to absorb all anomalies in the supersymmetry algebra of the N=(1,1) Wess-Zumino model in d=1+1 by a local counter term. This counter term corresponds to the change of the vacuum parameter $v_0^2$ in the model and the transition to an unconventional but admissible renormalization scheme. It does not modify the physical consequences such as BPS saturation, and thus the situation is rather different from gauge theory where local counter terms are required to absorb spurious gauge anomalies.

Topological anomalies from the path integral measure in superspace

A fully quantum version of the Witten-Olive analysis of the central charge in the N=1 Wess-Zumino model in $d=2$ with a kink solution is presented by using path integrals in superspace. We regulate the Jacobians with heat kernels in superspace, and obtain all superconformal anomalies as one Jacobian factor. The conserved quantum currents differ from the Noether currents by terms proportional to field equations, and these terms contribute to the anomalies. We identify the particular variation of the superfield which produces the central charge current and its anomaly; it is the variation of the auxiliary field. The quantum supersymmetry algebra which includes the contributions of superconformal anomalies is derived by using the Bjorken-Johnson-Low method instead of semi-classical Dirac brackets. We confirm earlier results that the BPS bound remains saturated at the quantum level due to equal anomalies in the energy and central charge.

Local Casimir Energy For Solitons

Direct calculation of the one-loop contributions to the energy density of bosonic and supersymmetric phi-to-the-fourth kinks exhibits: (1) Local mode regularization. Requiring the mode density in the kink and the trivial sectors to be equal at each point in space yields the anomalous part of the energy density. (2) Phase space factorization. A striking position-momentum factorization for reflectionless potentials gives the non-anomalous energy density a simple relation to that for the bound state. For the supersymmetric kink, our expression for the energy density (both the anomalous and non-anomalous parts) agrees with the published central charge density, whose anomalous part we also compute directly by point-splitting regularization. Finally we show that, for a scalar field with arbitrary scalar background potential in one space dimension, point-splitting regularization implies local mode regularization of the Casimir energy density.

Consistent Boundary Conditions for Open Strings

We study boundary conditions for the bosonic, spinning (NSR) and Green-Schwarz open string, as well as for 1+1 dimensional supergravity. We consider boundary conditions that arise from (1) extremizing the action, (2) BRST, rigid or local supersymmetry, or kappa(Siegel)-symmetry of the action, (3) closure of the set of boundary conditions under the symmetry transformations, and (4) the boundary limits of bulk Euler-Lagrange equations that are ``conjugate'' to other boundary conditions. We find corrections to Neumann boundary conditions in the presence of a bulk tachyon field. We discuss a boundary superspace formalism. We also find that path integral quantization of the open string requires an infinite tower of boundary conditions that can be interpreted as a smoothness condition on the doubled interval; we interpret this to mean that for a path-integral formulation of open strings with only Neumann boundary conditions, the description in terms of orientifolds is not just natural, but is actually fundamental.
