Transition region-induced kinetic Alfven wave conversion. Electric displacement field

The transition region is a thin inhomogeneous region where Alfven waves' energy fluxes generated elsewhere in the solar atmosphere are effectively converted. Large-scale kinetic Alfven wave propagations, transmission, and reflection processes across the transition region are examined. The two-fluid model is adopted, and a study is conducted of how the kinetic Alfven wave electric displacement field changes across the transition region. The analysis outcomes are: the kinetic Alfven wave and electrostatic ion sound waves are coupled by the transverse wavenumber; wave electric field components (normal to the transition region) become enhanced up to two orders; the energy fluxes of transmitted kinetic Alfven waves are re-directed almost horizontally along the transition region, an evanescent electric field zone of enhanced intensity is induced tightly beyond the transition region; the ponderomotive force that emerges in that zone due to the reflected kinetic Alfven waves accelerates plasma particle upwards compared to their initial energy in the upper chromosphere.

Underground current impulses as a possible source of unipolar magnetic pulses

Recently several cases of observations of unipolar magnetic field pulses associated with earthquakes at different points (California, Italy, Peru) have been recorded. The paper attempts to model unipolar magnetic field pulses based on one mechanism that should be omnipresent for all measurement points, namely, the magnetic field diffusion through a conductive medium. The structure of magnetic fields supported by electric current sources is thoroughly modelled. The source of electric current is considered as an elongated volume of finite cross-section being immersed in a conductive medium. To model the unipolarity feature of the observed pulses prior to and at the earthquake main shock, the electric current of the source is of impulse form. Special attention is paid to the differences in the pulse structure (as amplitude envelope and the pulse width) that are measured by various magnetometers (fluxgate or search-coil). An analysis and comparison with recorded magnetic field pulse characteristics reveal that the observed unipolar pulses may have a common genesis, an electric current source within a conductive medium such as the earth crust.

Unipolar magnetic field pulses as transient signals prior to the 2009 Aquila earthquake shock

Unipolar pre-seismic magnetic field pulses have been observed first by Bleier et al. (2009) and Villante et al. (2010) and Nenovski et al. (2013). In the present study a detailed analysis of the pulses is conducted looking for signatures of transient signals similar to that recorded at the 2009 Aquila earthquake main shock (Nenovski, 2015). Various magnetic field data around the Aquila earthquake provide an instrumental basis for such an analysis. In addition to fluxgate magnetometer data (already examined in previous studies), overhauser magnetometer data are involved. The result is a detection and discrimination of transient signals of diffusive form that appear prior to the earthquake main shock.

Global surface wave resonances of the earth magnetosphere and their possible manifestation

In this paper global surface wave modes supported by plasma discontinuities at both the magnetopause and the plasmapause are considered. The ionosphere at the ends of the magnetic field lines of the earth outer magnetosphere is considered as reflecting boundaries of the surface waves that propagate along the plasma boundaries. As a result a standing wave structure along the magnetic field fluxes of the outer magnetosphere, i.e. surface wave resonance structure can be formed. Due to quantized wavenumbers along the magnetic field lines, the surface wave resonance possesses quantified frequencies in a following way: f = nfres, where fres is frequency of the corresponding fundamental surface wave resonance and n is an integer. Global Pc5 pulsations have been observed and interpreted mostly as cavity modes of the earth magnetosphere. The global Pc5 pulsations however could alternatively be interpreted as ultra low-frequency surface wave resonances of the earth magnetosphere that do not necessarily involve the cavity mode-field aligned resonance transformation concept.

Local changes in the total electron content immediately before the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake

Ionospheric TEC (Total Electron Content) variations derived from GPS measurements at 17 stations before and after the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake (EQ) of magnitude Mw6.3 were processed and analyzed. The analysis included interpolated and non-interpolated TEC data. Variations in the TEC of both regional and local characteristics were revealed. Several regional changes were observed in the studied period: 1 Jan-21 Apr. 2009. After analyzing non-interpolated TEC data of 5 GPS stations in Central Italy (Unpg (Perugia), Untr, Aqui (Aquila), M0se (Roma) and Paca (Palma)), a local disturbance of TEC was also found. This local TEC disturbance arises preparatory to the EQ main shock occurred at 01:32 UT on 06 April 2009, maximizes its amplitude of ~ 0.8 TECu after the shock moment and disappears after it. The TEC disturbance was localized at heights below 160 km, i.e. in the lower ionosphere.

Drag Forces, Neutral Wind and Electric Conductivity Changes in the Ionospheric E Region

The neutrals in the Earth environment are in fact free and subjected to drag forces (by ions). In this study we show that drag or friction forces in the ionosphere-thermosphere system initiate changes in the plasma flow, neutral wind, and the conductivity, as well. Ions and electrons embedded in neutral wind field of velocity u acquire drifts perpendicular both to the initial neutral wind velocity and to the ambient magnetic field producing a perpendicular electric current. This perpendicular electric current is defined by a conductivity derived previously and the polarization electric field u x B. Self-consistently, the free neutrals acquires an additional neutral velocity component perpendicular to the initial neutral wind velocity u. The Pedersen and Hall currents wane within a specific time inversely proportional to neutral-ion collision frequency. These findings are relevant to a better understanding of electric current generation, distribution and closure in weakly ionized plasmas where charged particles (plasma) and neutrals are not bound (free) as the ionosphere and thermosphere in the Earth environment, the solar atmosphere-chromosphere region and even dusty plasmas. The theoretical results supposedly address to recent observations of meso-scale neutral wind rotation in the vicinity of auroral arcs (Kosch et al, 2010).
