Ultralow-Field Triplon Condensation in a Spin-Ladder Magnet

We realise the first ultralow-field Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in a spin-ladder magnet, uncovering a quantum critical point at only $μ_0 H_{c1}=0.17$ T in Henmilite ($\mathrm{Ca_2Cu(OH)_4[B(OH)_4]_2}$). Unlike dimer magnets, a ladder retains extended one-dimensional correlations in its gapped parent state, making this limit strongly fluctuation dominated. Thermodynamic, magnetoelastic, $μ$SR, and neutron-diffraction measurements overturn the previous assignment of zero-field antiferromagnetic order, establishing a quantum-disordered coupled-ladder parent state with persistent low-energy dynamics. The weak low-temperature anomaly instead marks a gap-controlled crossover from the correlated ladder regime into the activated quantum-disordered state. These measurements further reveal an exceptionally asymmetric ordered dome extending to $μ_0 H_{c2}\simeq 8.2$ T. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the relevant spin Hamiltonian place Henmilite just on the gapped side of the zero-field ladder-ordering instability, naturally accounting for the strong separation between the exchange and residual-gap scales and the tiny critical field. Our findings extend ultralow-field triplon condensation beyond the dimer paradigm and establish Henmilite as a platform for controlled tuning across quantum criticality in a fluctuation-dominated spin ladder.

Systematic Mapping of Altermagnetic Magnons by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Circular Dichroism

Altermagnets, a unique class of magnetic materials that combines features of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, have garnered attention for their potential in spintronics and magnonics. While the electronic properties of altermagnets have been well studied, characterizing their magnon excitations is essential for fully understanding their behavior and enabling practical device applications. In this work, we introduce a measurement protocol combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with circular polarization and azimuthal scanning to probe the chiral nature of the altermagnetic split magnon modes in CrSb. This approach circumvents the challenges posed by domain averaging in macroscopic samples, allowing for precise measurements of the polarization and energy of the magnons in individual antiferromagnetic domains. Our findings demonstrate a pronounced circular dichroism in the magnon peaks, with an azimuthal dependence that is consistent with the theoretical predictions and the $g$-wave symmetry. By establishing a reliable and accessible method for probing altermagnetic magnons, this work opens new avenues for fundamental studies of these collective excitations and for developing next-generation magnonic device applications.

A Survey of Feature detection methods for localisation of plain sections of Axial Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Matching MRI brain images between patients or mapping patients' MRI slices to the simulated atlas of a brain is key to the automatic registration of MRI of a brain. The ability to match MRI images would also enable such applications as indexing and searching MRI images among multiple patients or selecting images from the region of interest. In this work, we have introduced robustness, accuracy and cumulative distance metrics and methodology that allows us to compare different techniques and approaches in matching brain MRI of different patients or matching MRI brain slice to a position in the brain atlas. To that end, we have used feature detection methods AGAST, AKAZE, BRISK, GFTT, HardNet, and ORB, which are established methods in image processing, and compared them on their resistance to image degradation and their ability to match the same brain MRI slice of different patients. We have demonstrated that some of these techniques can correctly match most of the brain MRI slices of different patients. When matching is performed with the atlas of the human brain, their performance is significantly lower. The best performing feature detection method was a combination of SIFT detector and HardNet descriptor that achieved 93% accuracy in matching images with other patients and only 52% accurately matched images when compared to atlas.

An Exercise in Open Data: Triple Axis Data on Si single crystal

Efforts are rising in opening up science by making data more transparent and more easily available, including the data reduction and evaluation procedures and code. A strong foundation for this is the F.A.I.R. principle, building on Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets, complemented by the letter T for trustworthyness of the data. Here, we have used data, which was made available by the Institute Laue-Langevin and can be identified using a DOI, to follow the F.A.I.R.+T. principle in extracting, evaluating and publishing triple axis data, recorded at IN3.

Fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice induced by anisotropic couplings

Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice with an incipient meron character is stabilized in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ through anisotropic couplings. Our work demonstrates that the theoretically proposed antiferromagnetic skyrmions can be stabilized in real materials and represents an important step towards implementing the antiferromagnetic-skyrmion based spintronic devices.

Crystal Structures and Phase Transitions of the van-der-Waals Ferromagnet VI3

The results of a single-crystal X-ray-diffraction study of the evolution of crystal structures of VI3 with temperature with emphasis on phase transitions are presented. Some related specific-heat and magnetization data are included. The existence of the room-temperature trigonal crystal structure R-3 (148) has been confirmed. Upon cooling, VI3 undergoes a structural phase transition to a monoclinic phase at Ts ~ 79 K. Ts is reduced in magnetic fields applied along the trigonal c-axis. When VI3 becomes ferromagnetic at TFM1 ~ 50 K, magnetostriction-induced changes of the monoclinic-structure parameters are observed. Upon further cooling, the monoclinic structure transforms into a triclinic variant at 32 K which is most likely occurring in conjunction with the previously reported transformation of the ferromagnetic structure. The observed phenomena are preliminarily attributed to strong magnetoelastic interactions.

Magnetoelastic hybrid excitations in CeAuAl$_3$

The interactions between elementary excitations such as phonons, plasmons, magnons, or particle-hole pairs, drive emergent functionalities and electronic instabilities such as multiferroic behaviour, anomalous thermoelectric properties, polar order, or superconductivity. Whereas various hybrid excitations have been studied extensively, the feed-back of prototypical elementary excitations on the crystal electric fields (CEF), defining the environment in which the elementary excitations arise, has been explored for very strong coupling only. We report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy and ab-initio phonon calculations of {\ceaual}, an archetypal fluctuating valence compound. The high resolution of our data allows us to quantify the energy scales of three coupling mechanisms between phonons, CEF-split localized 4f electron states, and conduction electrons. Although these interactions do not appear to be atypically strong for this class of materials, we resolve, for the first time, a profound renormalization of low-energy quasiparticle excitations on all levels. The key anomalies of the spectrum we observe comprise (1) the formation of a CEF-phonon bound state with a comparatively low density of acoustic phonons reminiscent of vibronic modes observed in other materials, where they require a pronounced abundance of optical phonons, (2) an anti-crossing of CEF states and acoustic phonons, and (3) a strong broadening of CEF states due to the hybridization with more itinerant excitations. The fact that all of these features are well resolved in CeAuAl$_3$ suggests that similar hybrid excitations should also be dominant in a large family of related materials. This promises a predictive understanding towards the discovery of new magneto-elastic functionalities and instabilities.

Magnetic structures in the rich magnetic phase diagram of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$

The magnetic phase diagram of the tetragonal Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ compound has similar features to many related systems, revealing a zero magnetic field AF1 and a field-induced AF2 phases. Details of the magnetic order in the AF2 phase were not reported yet for any of the related compounds. In addition, only the Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ phase diagram contains a small region of the incommensurate zero-field AF3 phase. We have performed a number of neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ using several diffractometers including experiments in both horizontal and vertical magnetic fields up to 4 T. We present details of the magnetic structures in all magnetic phases of the rich phase diagram of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$. The Ho magnetic moments point along the tetragonal $c$ axis in every phase. The ground-state AF1 phase is characterized by propagation vector $\textbf{k}$ = (1/2, 0, 0). The more complex ferrimagnetic AF2 phase is described by four propagation vectors $\textbf{k}_{0}$ = (0, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{1}$ = (1/2, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{2}$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2), $\textbf{k}_{3}$ = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The magnetic structure in the AF3 phase is incommensurate with $\textbf{k}_{AF3}$ = (0.5, $δ$, 0). Our results are consistent with theoretical calculations based on crystal field theory.

MCMAS-SLK: A Model Checker for the Verification of Strategy Logic Specifications

We introduce MCMAS-SLK, a BDD-based model checker for the verification of systems against specifications expressed in a novel, epistemic variant of strategy logic. We give syntax and semantics of the specification language and introduce a labelling algorithm for epistemic and strategy logic modalities. We provide details of the checker which can also be used for synthesising agents' strategies so that a specification is satisfied by the system. We evaluate the efficiency of the implementation by discussing the results obtained for the dining cryptographers protocol and a variant of the cake-cutting problem.

Magnetic structures of non-cerium analogues of heavy-fermion Ce2RhIn8: case of Nd2RhIn8, Dy2RhIn8 and Er2RhIn8

R2RhIn8 compounds (space group P4/mmm, R is a rare-earth element) belong to a large group of structurally related tetragonal materials which involves several heavy-fermion superconductors based on Ce. We have succeeded to grow single crystals of compounds with Nd, Dy and Er and following our previous bulk measurements, we performed neutron-diffraction studies to determine their magnetic structures. The Laue diffraction experiment showed that the antiferromagnetic order below the Néel temperature is in all three compounds characterized by the propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The amplitude and direction of the magnetic moments, as well as the invariance symmetry of the magnetic structure, were determined by subsequent experiments using two- and four-circle diffractometers. The critical exponents were determined from the temperature dependence of the intensities below TN.
