Multi-line Analysis of Stellar Spectra in the VO Environment

Despite the lack of important functions supported only by legacy applications, the current VO-compatible tools have enough capabilities to allow powerful analysis of stellar spectra using both public archives and local proprietary data. We give examples of the possible multi-wavelength analysis of changes of profiles in different spectral lines using the current SSAP-compatible VO tools. The potential of future VO applications supporting more elaborate methods for stellar analysis is discussed as well.

Identification of important VO spectral services benefiting from deployment on the Grid

The majority of VO-compatible spectra handling applications operates only with a few spectra entirely downloaded from single or several SSAP servers. We try to identify the scientific cases which could immediately benefit from future SSAP applications designed for GRID deployment. Their key feature is the sophisticated spectra pre-selection and preprocessing done on distributed servers using the intelligent agent summarising the results and performing final high-level processing or analysis.

VO-KOREL: A Fourier disentangling service of Virtual Observatory

VO-KOREL is a web service exploiting the technology of Virtual Observatory for providing the astronomers with the intuitive graphical front-end and distributed computing back-end running the most recent version of Fourier disentangling code KOREL. The system integrates the ideas of the e-shop basket, conserving the privacy of every user by transfer encryption and access authentication, with features of laboratory notebook, allowing the easy housekeeping of both input parameters and final results, as well as it explores a newly emerging technology of cloud computing. While the web-based front-end allows the user to submit data and parameter files, edit parameters, manage a job list, resubmit or cancel running jobs and mainly watching the text and graphical results of a disentangling process, the main part of the back-end is a simple job queue submission system executing in parallel multiple instances of FORTRAN code KOREL. This may be easily extended for GRID-based deployment on massively parallel computing clusters. The short introduction into underlying technologies is given, briefly mentioning advantages as well as bottlenecks of the design used.

Optical Spectroscopy with the Technology of Virtual Observatory

The contemporary astronomy is flooded with an exponentially growing petabyte-scaled data volumes produced by powerful ground and space-based instrumentation as well as a product of extensive computer simulations and computations of complex numerical models. The efficient organisation and seamless handling of this information avalanche stored in a world-wide spread heterogeneous databases and the facilitation of extraction of new physical knowledge about the Universe is a primary goal of the rapidly evolving astronomical Virtual Observatory (VO). We give an overview of current spectroscopic capabilities of VO and identify the future requirements indispensable for detailed multi-wavelength analysis of huge amounts of spectra in a semi-automatic manner.

Obstructions for two-vertex alternating embeddings of graphs in surfaces

A class of graphs that lies strictly between the classes of graphs of genus (at most) $k-1$ and $k$ is studied. For a fixed orientable surface $S_k$ of genus $k$, let $A_{xy}^k$ be the minor-closed class of graphs with terminals $x$ and $y$ that either embed into $S_{k-1}$ or admit an embedding $Π$ into $S_k$ such that there is a $Π$-face where $x$ and $y$ appear twice in the alternating order. In this paper, the obstructions for the classes $A_{xy}^k$ are studied. In particular, the complete list of obstructions for $A_{xy}^1$ is presented.

A new ephemeris and an orbital solution of ε Aurigae

We collected rich series of RV measurements covering last 110 years and photometric observations from the past 6 primary eclipses, complemented them by our new observations and derived a new precise ephemeris and an orbital solution of epsilon Aur.
