Anisotropic Conformal Infinity

We generalize Penrose's notion of conformal infinity of spacetime, to situations with anisotropic scaling. This is relevant not only for Lifshitz-type anisotropic gravity models, but also in standard general relativity and string theory, for spacetimes exhibiting a natural asymptotic anisotropy. Examples include the Lifshitz and Schrodinger spaces (proposed as AdS/CFT duals of nonrelativistic field theories), warped AdS_3, and the near-horizon extreme Kerr geometry. The anisotropic conformal boundary appears crucial for resolving puzzles of holographic renormalization in such spacetimes.

Spectral Dimension of the Universe in Quantum Gravity at a Lifshitz Point

We extend the definition of "spectral dimension" (usually defined for fractal and lattice geometries) to theories on smooth spacetimes with anisotropic scaling. We show that in quantum gravity dominated by a Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z in D+1 spacetime dimensions, the spectral dimension of spacetime is equal to d_s=1+D/z. In the case of gravity in 3+1 dimensions presented in arXiv:0901.3775, which is dominated by z=3 in the UV and flows to z=1 in the IR, the spectral dimension of spacetime flows from d_s=4 at large scales, to d_s=2 at short distances. Remarkably, this is the qualitative behavior of d_s found numerically by Ambjorn, Jurkiewicz and Loll in their causal dynamical triangulations approach to quantum gravity.

Quantum Gravity at a Lifshitz Point

We present a candidate quantum field theory of gravity with dynamical critical exponent equal to z=3 in the UV. (As in condensed matter systems, z measures the degree of anisotropy between space and time.) This theory, which at short distances describes interacting nonrelativistic gravitons, is power-counting renormalizable in 3+1 dimensions. When restricted to satisfy the condition of detailed balance, this theory is intimately related to topologically massive gravity in three dimensions, and the geometry of the Cotton tensor. At long distances, this theory flows naturally to the relativistic value z=1, and could therefore serve as a possible candidate for a UV completion of Einstein's general relativity or an infrared modification thereof. The effective speed of light, the Newton constant and the cosmological constant all emerge from relevant deformations of the deeply nonrelativistic z=3 theory at short distances.

Membranes at Quantum Criticality

We propose a quantum theory of membranes designed such that the ground-state wavefunction of the membrane with compact spatial topology Σ_h reproduces the partition function of the bosonic string on worldsheet Σ_h. The construction involves worldvolume matter at quantum criticality, described in the simplest case by Lifshitz scalars with dynamical critical exponent z=2. This matter system must be coupled to a novel theory of worldvolume gravity, also exhibiting quantum criticality with z=2. We first construct such a nonrelativistic "gravity at a Lifshitz point" with z=2 in D+1 spacetime dimensions, and then specialize to the critical case of D=2 suitable for the membrane worldvolume. We also show that in the second-quantized framework, the string partition function is reproduced if the spacetime ground state takes the form of a Bose-Einstein condensate of membranes in their first-quantized ground states, correlated across all genera.

Quantum Criticality and Yang-Mills Gauge Theory

We present a family of nonrelativistic Yang-Mills gauge theories in D+1 dimensions whose free-field limit exhibits quantum critical behavior with gapless excitations and dynamical critical exponent z=2. The ground state wavefunction is intimately related to the partition function of relativistic Yang-Mills in D dimensions. The gauge couplings exhibit logarithmic scaling and asymptotic freedom in the upper critical spacetime dimension, equal to 4+1. The theories can be deformed in the infrared by a relevant operator that restores Poincare invariance as an accidental symmetry. In the large-N limit, our nonrelativistic gauge theories can be expected to have weakly curved gravity duals.

Closed-String Tachyon Condensation and the Worldsheet Super-Higgs Effect

Alternative gauge choices for worldsheet supersymmetry can elucidate dynamical phenomena obscured in the usual superconformal gauge. In the particular example of the tachyonic $E_8$ heterotic string, we use a judicious gauge choice to show that the process of closed-string tachyon condensation can be understood in terms of a worldsheet super-Higgs effect. The worldsheet gravitino assimilates the goldstino and becomes a dynamical propagating field. Conformal, but not superconformal, invariance is maintained throughout.

M-Theory Through the Looking Glass: Tachyon Condensation in the E_8 Heterotic String

We study the spacetime decay to nothing in string theory and M-theory. First we recall a nonsupersymmetric version of heterotic M-theory, in which bubbles of nothing -- connecting the two E_8 boundaries by a throat -- are expected to be nucleated. We argue that the fate of this system should be addressed at weak string coupling, where the nonperturbative instanton instability is expected to turn into a perturbative tachyonic one. We identify the unique string theory that could describe this process: The heterotic model with one E_8 gauge group and a singlet tachyon. We then use worldsheet methods to study the tachyon condensation in the NSR formulation of this model, and show that it induces a worldsheet super-Higgs effect. The main theme of our analysis is the possibility of making meaningful alternative gauge choices for worldsheet supersymmetry, in place of the conventional superconformal gauge. We show in a version of unitary gauge how the worldsheet gravitino assimilates the goldstino and becomes dynamical. This picture clarifies recent results of Hellerman and Swanson. We also present analogs of R_ξgauges, and note the importance of logarithmic CFT in the context of tachyon condensation.

Astrophysical Violations of the Kerr Bound as a Possible Signature of String Theory

In 4D general relativity, the angular momentum of a black hole is limited by the Kerr bound. We suggest that in string theory, this bound can be breached and compact black-hole-like objects can spin faster. Near such "superspinars," the efficiency of energy transfer from the accreting matter to radiation can reach 100%, compared to the maximum efficiency of 42% of the extremal Kerr (or 6% of the Schwarzschild) black hole. Finding such superspinning objects as active galactic nuclei, GBHCs, or sources of gamma ray bursts, could be viewed as experimental support for string theory.

Strings on AdS_2 and the High-Energy Limit of Noncritical M-Theory

Noncritical M-theory in 2+1 dimensions has been defined as a double-scaling limit of a nonrelativistic Fermi liquid on a flat two-dimensional plane. Here we study this noncritical M-theory in the limit of high energies, analogous to the α'\to\infty limit of string theory. In the related case of two-dimensional Type 0A strings, it has been argued that the conformal α'\to\infty limit leads to AdS_2 with a propagating fermion whose mass is set by the value of the RR flux. Here we provide evidence that in the high-energy limit, the natural ground state of noncritical M-theory similarly describes the AdS_2\times S^1 spacetime, with a massless propagating fermion. We argue that the spacetime effective theory in this background is captured by a topological higher-spin extension of conformal Chern-Simons gravity in 2+1 dimensions, consistently coupled to a massless Dirac field. Intriguingly, the two-dimensional plane populated by the original nonrelativistic fermions is essentially the twistor space associated with the symmetry group of the AdS_2\times S^1 spacetime; thus, at least in the high-energy limit, noncritical M-theory can be nonperturbatively described as a "Fermi liquid on twistor space."

Thermodynamics of Noncritical M-Theory and the Topological A-Model

In hep-th/0508024, noncritical M-theory for two-dimensional Type 0A and 0B strings was defined in terms of a double-scaled theory of nonrelativistic fermions in 2+1 dimensions. Here we study this noncritical M-theory at finite temperature. We derive the exact expression for the free energy of its vacuum solution, as a function of a coupling constant $g_M$ and the radius $R$ of the thermal circle. We show that at high temperature, the theory is effectively described by another M-theory solution, whose effective loop-counting coupling scales in a novel way characteristic of M-theory, as $T^3$. Our calculations further suggest that noncritical M-theory is dual to the closed string theory of the topological A-model on a Calabi-Yau, with the radius $R$ of the Euclidean time circle in M-theory playing the role of the string coupling constant of the A-model. In this correspondence, T-duality on the Euclidean time circle of noncritical M-theory implies an S-duality for the topological A-model.

Noncritical M-Theory in 2+1 Dimensions as a Nonrelativistic Fermi Liquid

We claim that the dynamics of noncritical string theories in two dimensions is related to an underlying noncritical version of M-theory, which we define in terms of a double-scaled nonrelativistic Fermi liquid in 2+1 dimensions. After reproducing Type 0A and 0B string theories as solutions, we study the natural M-theory vacuum. The vacuum energy of this solution can be evaluated exactly, its form suggesting a duality to the Debye model of phonons in a melting solid, and a possible topological nature of the theory. The physical spacetime is emergent in this theory, only for states that admit a hydrodynamic description. Among the solutions of the hydrodynamic equations of motion for the Fermi surface, we find families describing the decay of one two-dimensional string theory into another via an intermediate M-theory phase.

Stability of Fermi Surfaces and K-Theory

Nonrelativistic Fermi liquids in d+1 dimensions exhibit generalized Fermi surfaces: (d-p)-dimensional submanifolds in the momentum-frequency space supporting gapless excitations. We show that the universality classes of stable Fermi surfaces are classified by K-theory, with the pattern of stability determined by Bott periodicity. The Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro construction implies that the low-energy modes near a Fermi surface exhibit relativistic invariance in the transverse p+1 dimensions. This suggests an intriguing parallel between norelativistic Fermi liquids and D-branes of string theory.

Topology Changing Transitions in Bubbling Geometries

Topological transitions in bubbling half-BPS Type IIB geometries with SO(4) x SO(4) symmetry can be decomposed into a sequence of n elementary transitions. The half-BPS solution that describes the elementary transition is seeded by a phase space distribution of fermions filling two diagonal quadrants. We study the geometry of this solution in some detail. We show that this solution can be interpreted as a time dependent geometry, interpolating between two asymptotic pp-waves in the far past and the far future. The singular solution at the transition can be resolved in two different ways, related by the particle-hole duality in the effective fermion description. Some universal features of the topology change are governed by two-dimensional Type 0B string theory, whose double scaling limit corresponds to the Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5 at topological transition. In addition, we present the full class of geometries describing the vicinity of the most general localized classical singularity that can occur in this class of half-BPS bubbling geometries.

Boundary Scattering in 1+1 Dimensions as an Aharanov-Bohm Effect

The boundary scattering problem in 1+1 dimensional CFT is relevant to a multitude of areas of physics, ranging from the Kondo effect in condensed matter theory to tachyon condensation in string theory. Invoking a correspondence between CFT on 1+1 dimensional manifolds with boundaries and Chern-Simons gauge theory on 2+1 dimensional Z_2 orbifolds, we show that the 1+1 dimensional conformal boundary scattering problem can be reformulated as an Aharonov-Bohm effect experienced by chiral edge states moving on a 1+1 dimensional boundary of the corresponding 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons system. The secretly topological origin of this physics leads to a new and simple derivation of the scattering of a massless scalar field on the line interacting with a sinusoidal boundary potential.

Over-Rotating Black Holes, Godel Holography and the Hypertube

We demonstrate how a five dimensional Godel universe appears as the core of resolved two-charge and three-charge over-rotating BMPV black holes. A smeared generalized supertube acts as a domain wall and removes regions of closed timelike curves by cutting off both the inside and outside solution before causality violations appear, effectively allowing the Godel universe and the over-rotating black hole to solve each other's causality problems. This mechanism suggests a novel form of holography between the compact Godel region and the diverse vacua and excitations of the bound state of a finite number of D0 and D4-branes with fundamental strings.

Holographic Protection of Chronology in Universes of the Godel Type

We analyze the structure of supersymmetric Godel-like cosmological solutions of string theory. Just as the original four-dimensional Godel universe, these solutions represent rotating, topologically trivial cosmologies with a homogeneous metric and closed timelike curves. First we focus on "phenomenological" aspects of holography, and identify the preferred holographic screens associated with inertial comoving observers in Godel universes. We find that holography can serve as a chronology protection agency: The closed timelike curves are either hidden behind the holographic screen, or broken by it into causal pieces. In fact, holography in Godel universes has many features in common with de Sitter space, suggesting that Godel universes could represent a supersymmetric laboratory for addressing the conceptual puzzles of de Sitter holography. Then we initiate the investigation of "microscopic" aspects of holography of Godel universes in string theory. We show that Godel universes are T-dual to pp-waves, and use this fact to generate new Godel-like solutions of string and M-theory by T-dualizing known supersymmetric pp-wave solutions.

Deconstructing de Sitter

Semiclassical gravity predicts that de Sitter space has a finite entropy. We suggest a picture for Euclidean de Sitter space in string theory, and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to argue that de Sitter entropy can be understood as the number of degrees of freedom in a quantum mechanical dual.

Casimir Effect Between World-Branes in Heterotic M-Theory

We study a non-supersymmetric $E_8\times\bar E_8$ compactification of M-theory on $S^1/Z_2$, related to the supersymmetric $E_8\times E_8$ theory by a chirality flip at one of the boundaries. This system represents an M-theory analog of the D-brane anti-D-brane systems of string theory. Alternatively, this compactification can be viewed as a model of supersymmetry breaking in the ``brane-world'' approach to phenomenology. We calculate the Casimir energy of the system at large separations, and show that there is an attractive Casimir force between the $E_8$ and $\bar E_8$ boundary. We predict that a tachyonic instability develops at separations of order the Planck scale, and discuss the possibility that the M-theory fivebrane might appear as a topological defect supported by the $E_8\times\bar E_8$ system. Finally, we analyze the eventual fate of the configuration, in the semiclassical approximation at large separations: the two ends of the world annihilate by nucleating wormholes between the two boundaries.
