Bounds on Abelian Currents in 4d CFTs

We study four-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with an abelian $U(1)$ global symmetry using the conformal bootstrap approach. We obtain numerical bounds on the scaling dimensions of low-lying operators, the stress-tensor central charge, and a particular combination of the 't Hooft anomaly and the current central charge. Our analysis provides the first non-perturbative constraints on four-dimensional CFTs with conserved abelian currents and establishes a framework that can be extended to theories with non-abelian global symmetries.

Nonlinearly Realised Defect Symmetries and Anomalies

Conformal defects -- extended objects in conformal field theories -- carry localised excitations inherited from symmetry currents, known as the displacements and tilts. They capture the linear response of the defect to deformations of its shape or of its profile along internal symmetry directions. There is no universal formula for deformations beyond the linear order and this is subject to ambiguities of coordinate choices on coset spaces and scheme dependence in the quantum theory. We analyse the exact match between the two and identify the scheme independent quantities capturing nonlinearly realised symmetries. This leads to universal integral identities for correlation functions in the presence of tilts and displacements. We present several applications of them. We also study possible anomalies, recovering known ones, finding new expressions for them, and uncovering new ones.

Monodromy Pinning Defects in the Critical $\mathrm{O}(2N)$ Model

We investigate a novel class of defects in the critical $\mathrm{O}(2N)$ model that preserve conformal symmetry along the defect, but not the symmetry under rotations transverse to the defect. Instead, they only preserve a combination of transverse rotations and a global symmetry. These defects are constructed as IR fixed points of RG flows originating at monodromy defects, triggered by a relevant operator with non-zero transverse spin. Using large-$N$ and $4-\varepsilon$ expansions, we compute leading-order scaling dimensions of defect operators and the one-point functions of the bulk fields. In various limits this theory coincides with the monodromy defect or the pinning field defect, and we compare our results to existing results for these defects.

Accurate bootstrap bounds from optimal interpolation

We develop new methods for approximating conformal blocks as positive functions times polynomials, with applications to the numerical bootstrap. We argue that to obtain accurate bootstrap bounds, conformal block approximations should minimize a certain error norm related to the asymptotics of dispersive functionals. This error norm can be made small using interpolation nodes with an appropriate optimal density. The optimal density turns out to satisfy a kind of force-balance equation for charges in one dimension, which can be solved using standard techniques from large-N matrix models. We also describe how to use optimal density interpolation nodes to improve condition numbers inside the semidefinite program solver SDPB. Altogether, our new approximation scheme and improvements to condition numbers lead to more accurate bootstrap bounds with fewer computational resources. They were crucial in the recent bootstrap study of stress tensors in the 3d Ising CFT.

Weyl bound for trilinear periods via conformal bootstrap

Let $f_1,f_2$ be holomorphic modular forms of the same weight for a cocompact lattice $\Gamma < \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbf{R})$. We estimate the rate of decay of the coefficients in the expansion of $f_1\overline{f_2}$ in a Laplace eigenbasis. By specializing our main theorem to the case where $\Gamma$ is arithmetic, we obtain new instances of the Weyl bound for triple product $L$-functions in the spectral aspect. Our method builds on the conformal bootstrap in physics.

AdS $N$-body problem at large spin

Motivated by the problem of multi-twist operators in general CFTs, we study the leading-twist states of the $N$-body problem in AdS at large spin $J$. We find that for the majority of states the effective quantum-mechanical problem becomes semiclassical with $\hbar=1/J$. The classical system at $J=\infty$ has $N-2$ degrees of freedom, and the classical phase space is identified with the positive Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{+}(2,N)$. The quantum problem is recovered via a Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of a classical Hamiltonian, which we describe explicitly. For $N=3$ the classical system has one degree of freedom and a detailed structure of the spectrum can be obtained from Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions. For all $N$, we show that the lowest excited states are approximated by a harmonic oscillator and find explicit expressions for their energies.

Bootstrapping the 3d Ising Stress Tensor

We compute observables of the critical 3d Ising model to high precision by applying the numerical conformal bootstrap to mixed correlators of the leading scalar operators $\sigma$ and $\epsilon$, and the stress tensor $T_{\mu\nu}$. We obtain new precise determinations of scaling dimensions $(\Delta_\sigma, \Delta_\epsilon) = (0.518148806(24), 1.41262528(29))$ as well as OPE coefficients involving $\sigma$, $\epsilon$, and $T_{\mu\nu}$. We also describe several improvements made along the way to algorithms and software tools for the numerical bootstrap.

Effective theory for fusion of conformal defects

We construct an effective field theory for fusion of conformal defects of any codimension in $d\geq 3$ conformal field theories. We fully solve the constraints of Weyl invariance for defects of arbitrary shape on general curved bulk manifolds and discuss the simplifications that arise for spherical defects on the conformal sphere. As applications, we study the structure of cusp anomalous dimensions in the anti-parallel lines limit and derive high-energy spin-dependent asymptotics for the one-point functions of bulk operators. We point out the potential importance of defects that break transverse rotations and initiate a classification of their Weyl anomalies.

Missing local operators, zeros, and twist-4 trajectories

The number of local operators in a CFT below a given twist grows with spin. Consistency with analyticity in spin then requires that at low spin, infinitely many Regge trajectories must decouple from local correlation functions, implying infinitely many vanishing conditions for OPE coefficients. In this paper we explain the mechanism behind this infinity of zeros. Specifically, the mechanism is related to the two-point function rather than the three-point function, explaining the vanishing of OPE coefficients in every correlator from a single condition. We illustrate our result by studying twist-4 Regge trajectories in the Wilson--Fisher CFT at one loop.

The Gross-Neveu-Yukawa Archipelago

We perform a bootstrap analysis of a mixed system of four-point functions of bosonic and fermionic operators in parity-preserving 3d CFTs with O(N) global symmetry. Our results provide rigorous bounds on the scaling dimensions of the O(N)-symmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) fixed points, constraining these theories to live in isolated islands in the space of CFT data. We focus on the cases N = 1, 2, 4, 8, which have applications to phase transitions in condensed matter systems, and compare our bounds to previous analytical and numerical results.

Detectors in weakly-coupled field theories

We initiate a study of asymptotic detector operators in weakly-coupled field theories. These operators describe measurements that can be performed at future null infinity in a collider experiment. In a conformal theory they can be identified with light-ray operators, and thus have a direct relation to the spectrum of the theory. After a general discussion of the underlying physical picture, we show how infrared divergences of general detector operators can be renormalized in perturbation theory, and how they give rise to detector anomalous dimensions. We discuss in detail how this renormalization can be performed at the intersections of the Regge trajectories where non-trivial mixing occurs, which is related to the poles in anomalous dimensions at special values of spin. Finally, we discuss novel horizontal trajectories in scalar theories and show how they contribute to correlation functions. Our calculations are done in the example of $ϕ^4$ theory in $d=4-ε$ dimensions, but the methods are applicable more broadly. At the Wilson-Fisher fixed point our results include an explicit expression for the Pomeron light-ray operator at two loops, as well as a prediction for the value of the Regge intercept at five loops.

Automorphic Spectra and the Conformal Bootstrap

We describe a new method for constraining Laplacian spectra of hyperbolic surfaces and 2-orbifolds. The main ingredient is consistency of the spectral decomposition of integrals of products of four automorphic forms. Using a combination of representation theory of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ and semi-definite programming, the method yields rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In several examples, the bound is nearly sharp. For instance, our bound on all genus-2 surfaces is $\lambda_1\leq 3.8388976481$, while the Bolza surface has $\lambda_1\approx 3.838887258$. The bounds also allow us to determine the set of spectral gaps attained by all hyperbolic 2-orbifolds. Our methods can be generalized to higher-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds and to yield stronger bounds in the two-dimensional case. The ideas were closely inspired by modern conformal bootstrap.

Distributions in CFT II. Minkowski Space

CFTs in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as the convergent Euclidean OPE. It is nowadays common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties also in Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. Here we consider Wightman 4-point functions of scalar primaries in Lorentzian signature. We derive a minimal set of their properties solely from the Euclidean unitary CFT axioms, without using extra assumptions. We establish all Wightman axioms (temperedness, spectral property, local commutativity, clustering), Lorentzian conformal invariance, and distributional convergence of the s-channel Lorentzian OPE. This is done constructively, by analytically continuing the 4-point functions using the s-channel OPE expansion in the radial cross-ratios $ρ, \barρ$. We prove a key fact that $|ρ|, |\barρ| < 1$ inside the forward tube, and set bounds on how fast $|ρ|, |\barρ|$ may tend to 1 when approaching the Minkowski space. We also provide a guide to the axiomatic QFT literature for the modern CFT audience. We review the Wightman and Osterwalder-Schrader (OS) axioms for Lorentzian and Euclidean QFTs, and the celebrated OS theorem connecting them. We also review a classic result of Mack about the distributional OPE convergence. Some of the classic arguments turn out useful in our setup. Others fall short of our needs due to Lorentzian assumptions (Mack) or unverifiable Euclidean assumptions (OS theorem).

blocks_3d: Software for general 3d conformal blocks

We introduce the software blocks_3d for computing four-point conformal blocks of operators with arbitrary Lorentz representations in 3d CFTs. It uses Zamolodchikov-like recursion relations to numerically compute derivatives of blocks around a crossing-symmetric configuration. It is implemented as a heavily optimized, multithreaded, C++ application. We give performance benchmarks for correlators containing scalars, fermions, and stress tensors. As an example application, we recompute bootstrap bounds on four-point functions of fermions and study whether a previously observed sharp jump can be explained using the "fake primary" effect. We conclude that the fake primary effect cannot fully explain the jump and the possible existence of a "dead-end" CFT near the jump merits further study.

Transverse spin in the light-ray OPE

We study a product of null-integrated local operators $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ on the same null plane in a CFT. Such null-integrated operators transform like primaries in a fictitious $d-2$ dimensional CFT in the directions transverse to the null integrals. We give a complete description of the OPE in these transverse directions. The terms with low transverse spin are light-ray operators with spin $J_1+J_2-1$. The terms with higher transverse spin are primary descendants of light-ray operators with higher spins $J_1+J_2-1+n$, constructed using special conformally-invariant differential operators that appear precisely in the kinematics of the light-ray OPE. As an example, the OPE between average null energy operators contains light-ray operators with spin $3$ (as described by Hofman and Maldacena), but also novel terms with spin $5,7,9,$ etc.. These new terms are important for describing energy two-point correlators in non-rotationally-symmetric states, and for computing multi-point energy correlators. We check our formulas in a non-rotationally-symmetric energy correlator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, finding perfect agreement.

The light-ray OPE and conformal colliders

We derive a nonperturbative, convergent operator product expansion (OPE) for null-integrated operators on the same null plane in a CFT. The objects appearing in the expansion are light-ray operators, whose matrix elements can be computed by the generalized Lorentzian inversion formula. For example, a product of average null energy (ANEC) operators has an expansion in the light-ray operators that appear in the stress-tensor OPE. An important application is to collider event shapes. The light-ray OPE gives a nonperturbative expansion for event shapes in special functions that we call celestial blocks. As an example, we apply the celestial block expansion to energy-energy correlators in N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. Using known OPE data, we find perfect agreement with previous results both at weak and strong coupling, and make new predictions at weak coupling through 4 loops (NNNLO).

Distributions in CFT I. Cross-Ratio Space

We show that the four-point functions in conformal field theory are defined as distributions on the boundary of the region of convergence of the conformal block expansion. The conformal block expansion converges in the sense of distributions on this boundary, i.e. it can be integrated term by term against appropriate test functions. This can be interpreted as a giving a new class of functionals that satisfy the swapping property when applied to the crossing equation, and we comment on the relation of our construction to other types of functionals. Our language is useful in all considerations involving the boundary of the region of convergence, e.g. for deriving the dispersion relations. We establish our results by elementary methods, relying only on crossing symmetry and the standard convergence properties of the conformal block expansion. This is the first in a series of papers on distributional properties of correlation functions in conformal field theory.

Light-ray operators in conformal field theory

We argue that every CFT contains light-ray operators labeled by a continuous spin J. When J is a positive integer, light-ray operators become integrals of local operators over a null line. However for non-integer J, light-ray operators are genuinely nonlocal and give the analytic continuation of CFT data in spin described by Caron-Huot. A key role in our construction is played by a novel set of intrinsically Lorentzian integral transforms that generalize the shadow transform. Matrix elements of light-ray operators can be computed via the integral of a double-commutator against a conformal block. This gives a simple derivation of Caron-Huot's Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and lets us generalize it to arbitrary four-point functions. Furthermore, we show that light-ray operators enter the Regge limit of CFT correlators, and generalize conformal Regge theory to arbitrary four-point functions. The average null energy operator is an important example of a light-ray operator. Using our construction, we find a new proof of the average null energy condition (ANEC), and furthermore generalize the ANEC to continuous spin.
