Nonlinear potential of quantum oscillator induced by single photons

Experimental investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of a quantum oscillator is a long standing goal of quantum physics. We propose a conditional method for inducing an arbitrary nonlinear potential on a quantum oscillator weakly interacting with light. Such an arbitrary nonlinear potential can be implemented by sequential repetition of an elementary conditional $X$-gate. To implement the $X$-gate, a single photon is linearly coupled to the oscillator and is subsequently detected by optical homodyne detection.

Experimental realization of a dynamic squeezing gate

Squeezing is a nonlinear Gaussian operation that is the key component in construction of other nonlinear Gaussian gates. In our implementation of the squeezing gate, the amount and the orientation of the squeezing can be controlled by an external driving signal with 1 MHz operational bandwidth. This opens a brand new area of dynamic Gaussian processing. In particular, the gate can be immediately employed as the feed-forward needed for the deterministic implementation of the quantum cubic gate, which is a key piece of universal quantum information processing.

Noiseless conditional teleportation of a single photon

We experimentally demonstrate the noiseless teleportation of a single photon by conditioning on quadrature Bell measurement results near the origin in phase space and thereby circumventing the photon loss that otherwise occurs even in optimal gain-tuned continuous-variable quantum teleportation. In general, thanks to this loss suppression, the noiseless conditional teleportation can preserve the negativity of the Wigner function for an arbitrary pure input state and an arbitrary pure entangled resource state. In our experiment, the positive value of the Wigner function at the origin for the unconditional output state, W(0,0) = 0.015 $\pm$ 0.001, becomes clearly negative after conditioning, W(0,0) = $-$0.025 $\pm$ 0.005, illustrating the advantage of noiseless conditional teleportation.

Exploring a new regime for processing optical qubits: squeezing and unsqueezing single photons

We implement the squeezing operation as a genuine quantum gate, deterministically and reversibly acting `online' upon an input state no longer restricted to the set of Gaussian states. More specifically, by applying an efficient and robust squeezing operation for the first time to non-Gaussian states, we demonstrate a two-way conversion between a particle-like single-photon state and a wave-like superposition of coherent states. Our squeezing gate is reliable enough to preserve the negativities of the corresponding Wigner functions. This demonstration represents an important and necessary step towards hybridizing discrete and continuous quantum protocols.

Noise powered amplification in CV quantum key distribution

Amplification plays a key role in classical communication protocols, where it compensates the unavoidable loss of the signal. However, when we enter the quantum domain this approach starts being problematic as the standard kinds of amplifiers are usually accompanied by excess noise which detrimentally affects the quantum features of used states. Recently, several kinds of "noiseless" amplifiers that do not suffer from this feature have been proposed. Among these amplifiers, one that stands out is the noise powered amplifier, which acts incoherently, amplifying the signal by adding the "right" kind of noise. Here we show that despite the incoherence, which makes the amplifier unsuitable for protocols such as entanglement distillation, the added noise is not a big problem in quantum key distribution tasks and can be in some situations beneficial.

Nonlocal quantum gate on quantum continuous variables with minimum resources

We experimentally demonstrate, with an all-optical setup, a nonlocal deterministic quantum non-demolition interaction gate applicable to quantum states at nodes separated by a physical distance and connected by classical communication channels. The gate implementation, based on entangled states shared in advance, local operations, and classical communication, runs completely in parallel fashion at both the local nodes, requiring minimum resource. The nondemolition character of the gate up to the local unitary squeezing is verified by the analysis using several coherent states. A genuine quantum nature of the gate is confirmed by the capability of deterministically producing an entangled state at the output from two separable input states. The all-optical nonlocal gate operation can be potentially incorporated into distributed quantum computing with atomic or solid state systems as a cross-processor unitary operation.

Optimal probabilistic measurement of phase

When measuring phase of quantum states of light, the optimal single-shot measurement implements projection on the un-physical phase states. If we want to improve the precision further we need to accept a reduced probability of success, either by implementing a probabilistic measurement or by probabilistically manipulating the measured quantum state by means of noiseless amplification. We analyze the limits of this approach by finding the optimal probabilistic measurement which, for a given rate of success, maximizes the precision with which the phase can be measured.

Generation and characterization of resource state for nonlinear cubic phase gate

Unitary non-Gaussian nonlinearity is one of the key components required for quantum computation and other developing applications of quantum information processing. Sufficient operation of this kind is still not available, but it can be approximatively implemented with help of a specifically engineered resource state constructed from individual photons. We present experimental realization and thorough analysis of such quantum resource state, and confirm that the state does indeed possess properties of a state produced by unitary dynamics driven by cubic nonlinearity.

Generating superposition of up-to three photons for continuous variable quantum information processing

We develop an experimental scheme based on a continuous-wave (cw) laser for generating arbitrary superpositions of photon number states. In this experiment, we successfully generate superposition states of zero to three photons, namely advanced versions of superpositions of two and three coherent states. They are fully compatible with developed quantum teleportation and measurement-based quantum operations with cw lasers. Due to achieved high detection efficiency, we observe, without any loss correction, multiple areas of negativity of Wigner function, which confirm strongly nonclassical nature of the generated states.

Experimental demonstration of a Hadamard gate for coherent state qubits

We discuss and experimentally demonstrate a probabilistic Hadamard gate for coherent state qubits. The scheme is based on linear optical components, non-classical resources and the joint projective action of a photon counter and a homodyne detector. We experimentally characterize the gate for the coherent states of the computational basis by full tomographic reconstruction of the transformed output states. Based on the parameters of the experiment we simulate the fidelity for all coherent state qubits on the Bloch sphere.

Probabilistic Cloning of Coherent States without a Phase Reference

We present a probabilistic cloning scheme operating independently of any phase reference. The scheme is based solely on a phase-randomized displacement and photon counting, omitting the need for non-classical resources and non-linear materials. In an experimental implementation, we employ the scheme to clone coherent states from a phase covariant alphabet and demonstrate that the cloner is capable of outperforming the hitherto best-performing deterministic scheme. An analysis of the covariances between the output states shows that uncorrelated clones can be approached asymptotically. An intriguing feature is that the trade-off between success rate and achieved fidelity can be optimized even after the cloning procedure.

Deterministic implementation of weak quantum cubic nonlinearity

We propose a deterministic implementation of weak cubic nonlinearity, which is a basic building block of a full scale CV quantum computation. Our proposal relies on preparation of a specific ancillary state and transferring its nonlinear properties onto the desired target by means of deterministic Gaussian operations and feed-forward. We show that, despite the imperfections arising from the deterministic nature of the operation, the weak quantum nonlinearity can be implemented and verified with the current level of technology.

Elementary gates for quantum information with superposed coherent states

We propose a new way of implementing several elementary quantum gates for qubits in the coherent state basis. The operations are probabilistic and employ single photon subtractions as the driving force. Our schemes for single-qubit phase gate and two-qubit controlled phase gate are capable of achieving arbitrarily large phase shifts with currently available resources, which makes them suitable for the near-future tests of quantum information processing with superposed coherent states.

Noise-Powered Probabilistic Concentration of Phase Information

Phase insensitive optical amplification of an unknown quantum state is known to be a fundamentally noisy operation that inevitably adds noise to the amplified state [1 - 5]. However, this fundamental noise penalty in amplification can be circumvented by resorting to a probabilistic scheme as recently proposed and demonstrated in refs [6 - 8]. These amplifiers are based on highly non-classical resources in a complex interferometer. Here we demonstrate a probabilistic quantum amplifier beating the fundamental quantum limit utilizing a thermal noise source and a photon number subtraction scheme [9]. The experiment shows, surprisingly, that the addition of incoherent noise leads to a noiselessly amplified output state with a phase uncertainty below the uncertainty of the state prior to amplification. This amplifier might become a valuable quantum tool in future quantum metrological schemes and quantum communication protocols.

Noise resilient quantum interface based on QND interaction

We propose a quantum interface protocol based on two quantum-non-demolition interactions (QND) arranged either in sequence or in parallel. Since the QND coupling arises naturally in interactions between light and a macroscopic ensemble of atoms, or between light and a micro-mechanical oscillator, the proposed interface is capable of transferring a state of light onto these matter systems. The transfer itself is perfect and deterministic for any quantum state, for arbitrarily small interaction strengths, and for arbitrarily large noise of the target system. It requires an all-optical pre-processing, requiring a coupling stronger than that between the light and the matter, and a displacement feed-forward correction of the matter system. We also suggest a probabilistic version of the interface, which eliminates the need for the feed-forward correction at a cost of reduced success rate. An application of the interface can be found in construction of a quantum memory, or in the state preparation for quantum sensing.

Resources for universal quantum state manipulation and engineering

We investigate which non-Gaussian resources are needed, in addition to Gaussian operations and measurements, for implementation of arbitrary quantum gates on multimode quantum states of light. We show that an arbitrary set of states with finite expansion in Fock basis is sufficient for this task. As an illustration we present an explicit scheme for probabilistic implementation of the nonlinear sign gate using resource non-Gaussian states and Gaussian operations.

Coherent-state phase concentration by quantum probabilistic amplification

We propose novel coherent-state phase concentration by probabilistic measurement-induced ampli- fication. The amplification scheme uses novel architecture, thermal noise addition (instead of single photon addition) followed by feasible multiple photon subtraction using realistic photon-number resolving detector. It allows to substantially amplify weak coherent states and simultaneously reduce their phase uncertainty, contrary to the deterministic amplifier.

Nonclassicality in phase space and nonclassical correlation

Continuous variable entanglement is a manifestation of nonclassicality of quantum states. In this paper we attempt to analyze whether and under which conditions nonclassicality can be used as an entanglement criterion. We adopt the well-accepted definition of nonclassicality in the form of lack of well-defined positive Glauber Sudarshan P-function describing the state. After demonstrating that the classicality of subsystems is not sufficient for the nonclassicality of the overall state to be identifiable with entanglement, we focus on Gaussian states and find specific local unitary transformations required to arrive at this equivalency. This is followed by the analysis of quantitative relation between nonclassicality and entanglement.
